ITunes just won't quit!

Every time I try to quit iTunes, it opens back up. It can take a couple of seconds, or a couple of minutes, but it always comes back! It's like my inlaws! Help!

This is often caused by an iTunes related Widget.
Try if disabling them helps.

  • ITunes just won't open?

i don't know what is wrong with my iTunes. i double click on the shortcut and iTunes just won't open. then i try and click on it from the start menu, and nothing again. i have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes about 3 times and still nothing changes. no error window or anything pops up even.
can someone help me please? thank you, i would really appreciate it.

I was having the same problem - this fixed it for me:
    Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be corrupt and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
    * C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
    * C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

  • No error code, iTunes just won't open

ok...i'm doing this for a friend's computer so I may not know all the details, but here goes...
My friend has a Dell laptop that runs on Windows Vista. We have installed the latest version of iTunes on her computer but no it seems she is having problems with it.
It all began with getting the error code (-50) anytime she tried to purchase music from the iTunes store. I checked all the forums and it seemed most people got this message when they were trying to open the iTunes store, but she only got it when trying to purchase it. I checked the parental controls and nothing was checked so I wasn't sure what was wrong.
I thought maybe iTunes just needed a reboot, so I quit iTunes. No we can't get it open. Everytime we double click on iTunes nothing happens. No error message, nothing. It seems like it might open because we get the 'pinwheel', but then nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?

  • Itunes just won't start after the upgrade

I've upgraded my itunes, and done all the double checks I've found on this site. My itunes just will not start after the upgrade. It's frustrating to say the least because I can't even access my libary or edit my ipod. I've tried everything including uninstalling and reinstalling.. please help! I wanted to put my audio books on my ipod for a roadtrip tomorrow!

Thanks Katrina. I was able to find what I needed through the link that you provided.
To those that are having this problem, here's what I did to fix this issue:
+If I have a computer or device that does not work well with an AWD with the latest update, how can I install previous (earlier) versions of firmware?+
    +1. Open AirPort Utility.+
+2. From the AirPort Utility menu, hold the Option key *(Control key in Windows XP and Vista)* and choose Check for Updates....+
+3. Select the specific firmware version you require.+
    +4. Click Download.+
+5. Select your base station and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click on the AWD icon.+
    +6. Choose Base Station > Upload Firmware.+
+7. Select a firmware version and click OK.+
+An important note about installing firmware+
+After you have successfully installed a firmware update, AirPort Utility will wait for the AWD to restart. Once the AWD is available, AirPort Utility will display the standard configuration setup window with the Manual Setup and Continue buttons. Unless you intentionally wish to change some configuration of one of your apple Wireless Devices, you do not need to click Continue. At this point, simply quit AirPort Utility. Your AWD should be functioning correctly.+

I chose firmware: Airport Extreme with 8-2.11n (Fast Ethernet) 7.3.2 Be patient, as Airport Utility will report that it can't find the AEBS, but after a short while mine was back. I did not roll back my version of Airport Utility.
All appears to be normal and the iTunes library is rebuilding as I type this. Hopefully, Apple will figure out what's causing the problem with firmware 7.4.1

  • ITunes just won't work!

    Hi there,
I've been trying to get iTunes working and it just won't! I have had an iPhone for a few months, and not sure whether this or a software update has anything to do with it? I basically use my iMac for the internet and as a glorified jukebox, but now I can't get it to open iTunes, the icon just bounces in the tray and then disappears.
If I look at the iTunes application by clicking on the "Macintosh HD" icon, it looks like the computer thinks it's opening it though as the last time of use of the application is always when I last tried to open it (unsuccessfully). Please don't tell me to turn it off and on again as I've been at it for weeks! I've tried getting rid of iTunes and downloading it again, but that's not working. I can still see all of my songs, and have just found out that if I go into my music folder, I can preview the songs, which makes me think that there must be some form of music playing software still working on my computer!
It's also affected iPhoto and Safari, as they are both doing the bouncy tray thing, but I think if I can fix one, I can fix them all (except I can't fix one!).
    Please help! So frustrating!

    Hi mm-
One of the users on our network has the same problem (She's running OS 10.4). We've updated the OS (dot 11 now? whatever it is -- the newest iteration of 10.4). Here's what we've done (not necessarily in order, as we've performed some of these 'fixes' more than once):
    1) Ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions
    2) Reinstalled iTunes with a fresh download from the Apple site.
    3) Deleted the Genius list from the iTunes folder.
    4) We even ran some maintenance in Terminal -- sudo periodic daily, weekly, monthly, and update_prebindings.
We still get the same inability to launch iTunes. If we click on the icon in the dock, it bounces once or twice and then stops. No launch, no error. No iTunes.

  • My itunes just won't open

My iTunes was working fine but suddenly just won't open. It looks like it's opening but nothing happens. I tried reinstalling many times but doesn't help. Does anyone have any solution to this? Hopefully it won't wipe out all my sync datas and library from my iPods & iPhone. It can't work and I am desperately seeking help. Can anyone help?

I have exactly the same problem. Apple does not seem to be responding to this issue. It appears that it only started after the latest update.

  • ITunes 9 won't quit asking for my password.

I watch a lot of TV shows on iTunes, and I've never had a problem like this before. Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 9, after each episode finishes, it wants me to put in my password several times, and it won't start downloading the next episode until I do. Sometimes I have to sign in 4 or 5 times in a row, and then it takes me to the "Apple Account Information" page of the iTunes store -- even though I never clicked on it.
It's a big problem, because my connection is a slow one and I usually leave the computer on at night or when I'm at work, but now it keeps stopping after each download to ask for my password, and it won't start the next episode unitl I do.

  • ITunes just won't download. Please help!

    Hey.
I got a new laptop at the weekend which runs on Vista. I've had an iPod Touch for about a year and have used it previously on another computer previsouly with no problem at all.
However, I've trid to download the latest version of iTunes for my new laptop but it will just not download. It normally gets to somewhere between 20% and 40% but then just freezes. If I try pausing the download and then restarting it, it still doesn't carry on but just sits there.
If anyone has got any ideas at all then it would be much appreciated. I am on Firefox and have Quicktime installed.
    Thanks for any help.

When you say "download", do you mean that you cannot get the iTunes installer copied from the Apple web site successfully? Or do you mean that you have the installer on your computer but that after running it, it gets part-way through but then fails?

  • ITunes just won't start

    Hey there
I'm workin on a Mac for a friend... trying to get iTunes to fire up. He can't burn disks without iTunes and it stopped working some time ago.
At first it was giving him a "shared file exists" error ..? not it just does nothing when you click on it. He had version 6x installed so I upgraded it to 7.4.2, still no joy
I'm a Windows / Linux user so I know very little about using the Mac. Pretty machine, just unfamiliar. Like the first time I tried to order an espresso in Canada.
If anyone has suggestions let me know...
He uses ProTools to record music in a small home studio, not sure if that's relevant but there you have it.
    Thanks
    dc

If he has any audio devices connected to the computer, disconnect them completely (yes, all of them) and attempt to open iTunes again. Audio devices can be tricky like that. If iTunes launches, update osx and iTunes to the latest versions, reconnected the devices, and try again.
If that doesn't help, try this:

  • It just won't quit!

I have acquisition. Whenever i quit it gives me that "writing shared files" status bar or whatever it is, and then just freezes somewherein the middle and never ends. its so annoyin to always have to force quit. whats going on?

I just submitted a bug for this also. I believe that it is related to the process loginwindow because I get the following message in the console:
    <quote>
    1/19/08 3:04:19 AM loginwindow[23] ERROR | WSActivateApp | SetFrontProcess({0, 618647}) returned error -600. Unable to activate process.
    </quote>
So I opened Activity Monitor, killed the process, which made the graphic server restart, and I appeared back in the login form of OS X. After I logged in, I could log out with no problems.
I don't know, but I think it is related with putting my mac to sleep, because I think that the only common thing between these problems that I had was that I had trouble when coming back from sleep, the screen stayed all black and all I could see was the mouse pointer. To correct this, in both times, I closed the powerbook for it to go to sleep again and then re-opened it and everything was ok (i.e. showed the "enter your pass form"). Because this also involves loginwindow process, I believe that the two situations may be related.
    Hope it helps! Regards,
    Afonso

    Thanks in advance!!

Its alright I forget some details when I post a question too, anyways.... sounds like some file has got corrupt or theres a PC glitch.
As with many post covering simliar issues about iTunes not opening, first try uninstalling Quicktime and reinstalling it.
Also make sure your anitvirus is turned off or disabled when uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and qicktime. Follow ALL the steps at the link below

    Hey everyone,
This is my first post here and hopefully someone can help me. When starting up itunes the windows error pops up and says we cannot process your request to start itunes whatever you were doing will be lost, do you wish to send error report, blah blah. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it numerous times and nothing happens. Ive run out of options of what to do.
Please someone help my noob @$$ out.

  • ITunes just won't open sometimes....

I have Vista. I want to remove iTunes and re-download it. My only worry is will I lose my playlists and purchased music lists?? When I delete iTunes is something left behind in memory to restore my playlists when I re-download it? Make sense? Thanks

Yes, the itunes databse fie which is named
    iTunesLibrary.itl
is left behind, and all your playlists should be there. As well as playcounts, ratings, etc. That file stores all the itunes metadata.
Some folks have problems when upgrading, where their library file goes missing, that I've read about. Hasn't yet happened to me, but as a precaution, I always back up that ITL file to my USB memory stick before I do an itunes upgrade.

  • ITunes Store won't load, can't sign in

So - our older machine - PowerMac Dual 1.8Ghz G5 - Leopard 10.5.8, 5GB ram, 1TB HD - iTunes store worked just fine until the iTunes 10.5 update.  Now the iTunes store won't load when you click on "iTunes Store" in the right column in iTunes.  Just a grey window with "iTunes Store" shows.  Also, the little link to "Sign In" does nothing.
I have repaired permissions, and have tried to deauthorize/authorize this computer.  No effect.
I reinstalled iTunes - no change
This is frustrating, to say the least.  What's going on? More importantly - how can I get iTunes to work again?  The internet is working just fine - as I am posting this from the same machine.  I CAN log in to the iTunes store via my iPhone and my MacBook Pro using the same home wifi...
    Please help!

Another observation - I just tried to quit iTunes - and it won't quit.  Activity monitor does not show iTunes using a crazy amount of resources.  It just won't quit - not via keyboard command, not by the menu item.
    Something is definitely hosed.
