Itunes keeps launching automatically

Any ideas why it's doing this and how I can stop it?!
It's a little annoying.

There are at the moment 108 Widgets listed at the Apple Widget downloads page in the Music category.
I guess at least half of them are iTunes related. There are well and less well programmed ones (even rubbish). I consider it bad programming when a Widget calls iTunes when it is not running and decides to launch it.
Obviously there's a background process running in the Widget that requires iTunes to be active and the Widget 'decides' to launch iTunes.
If you like the Widget, you might try to contact the programmer, asking to change that behaviour.

  • ITunes keeps starting automatically

iTunes keeps starting automatically on my Macbook Air. When I quit iTunes it just restarts again within about 2 minutes. I have checked my Dashboard widgets and there is nothing there related to iTunes. It's unclear what has triggered this and it's VERY annoying.
How can I stop it doing this?

Was having the same problem but seemed to have solved it. Did the following:
    1. Went into CDs and DVDs prefs and set when you insert a music CD and picture CD to ignore
    2. Went into iTunes -> prefs -> Devices and unchecked "Look for remote speakers connected with Airtunes" and "Look for iPhone and iPod touch Remotes"
    3. Installed Lingon (http://lingon.sourceforge.net/) and checked all my startup processes and Daemons. Found some old things like MySQL trying to launch (even though web sharing is off) and an old Maxtor one touch driver and disabled the processes or removed them.
    4. Checked the console log to be sure nothing else was running or creating an error that I didn't need anymore.
I apologize that I can't say what solved it, but aside from the prefs in the apps, it may have been an old piece of software (like my old Maxtor drive) that was still trying to run that may have been triggering itunes.
    Good luck to all.

  • Why does iTunes keep launching?

All of a sudden, out of the blue, iTunes keeps launching when an alarm goes off in the application Alarm Clock Pro (ACP).  My wife is a teacher and ever since August 2011 I created alarms to notify her five minutes before the end of her classes.  She doesn't know how to change anything in ACP and she doesn't use iTunes.  Nothing has been changed but last week every time an alarm goes off iTunes launches.
I've gone through and checked the preferences in both programs and nothing points to this issue.  I know, ACP has an option to launch and play something in iTunes but this is NOT selected.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Merry CHRISTmas,
    Nathan

I thought at one time you there was a setting to prevent iTunes opening when a device was plugged in, I don't believe that the sync option will prevent that.
In your login items, System Preferences/Users and Groups do you have an item "iTunes Helper" I think this is the application monitoring the devices you plugin.
You could try closing that application in Activity Monitor and plugging your devices in and checking if it stop iTunes opening, also check if it stops it opening through the day. If it does just remove it from your login items after confirming it does not impact on other iTunes uses.

  • The instructiion at 0x5de7cfe3 referenced memory at 0x00000004.  The memory could not be read. I keep getting this error message, and iTunes keeps opening automatically.

I upgraded to 10.5 last weekend, and since then my iTunes keeps popping open.  I get the error message above, but sometimes the first "code" is different, the last time it was 0x6473cfe3 instead.  So irritating....

Try updating your QuickTime Player to the most recent version. Does that clear up the launch errors in iTunes?

  • New Mac - ITunes keeps launching

I have just taken delivery of a new MacPro and for some reason some something is launching iTunes.
I am not launching it manually and it is not happening at start-up but after a short session of browsing with Safari (no multi-media involved) I am being asked to agree to the iTunes agreement. Of course I do not want to. iTunes is not much use to myself. I click on Decline only for the box to return! The only way to break the cycle is to force quit iTunes.
    1. Is there something in OS X that is dependent on iTunes?
    2. Is there a way to stop this iTunes agreement window, especially if I decline to agree.
    Thanks.
    Latets Information.
System Preferences seems to have locked itself open. I was examining the keyboard setup. Could this launch iTunes? The current situation is that even Force Quit does not work! The list of running apps does not appear! I do not want to agree to iTunes. I cannot Decline. I cannot Force Quit!
    Suggestions appreciated!

Replying my own Question ... .it is the f8 key. The b*y thing keeps launching iTunes and I cannot seem to stop it!
this seems like a bug to me. If there is no media app loaded then why would I want that key to load one? Where is the Spaces key ... that is what is useful not more media frippery.
How can I disable the MM functions of these keys?
System Preferences does not seem to be working correctly. It is still talking about other keyboards where the dashboard is on F12 etc. This bears no relationship to my hardware. neither, as far as I can see is there any mention of iTunes, nor mention of shortcuts in the iTunes preferences.
    Suggestions welcome!

  • ITunes is launching automatically

just recently, iTunes has started launching automatically. I don't have "open at login" turned on, and no ipod/iphone is attached. I have repaired my disc permissions as well. any thoughts? this is driving me nuts!

i'm using the apple-supplied bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse. It's definitely not a keyboard shortcut unless there's one i'm not aware of? If i disable bluetooth, i won't be able to use the keyboard/mouse so...thanks for the suggestions though.

  • ITunes keeps opening automatically

I've been gone for the past 2 weeks on Christmas vacation
I came home yesterday, turned on my mac, and iTunes keeps opening by itself randomly.
It was fine before I left.
    It's so annoying!
    Any help?

Hello--Forgive the delay but I was away for a while after posting...Nothing seems to trigger the problem. I open iTunes, listen, close it. And then it starts re-opening. Every time I quit, it re-opens within seconds. (I have not noticed anything like another app being open that triggers it.) I hope this is helpful.

  • My iTunes keeps launching independently of me!

I'm running iTunes 10.4.1 on OS 10.6.8. After what I thought was a routine update of iTunes as signaled by my software updater, the new version keeps popping on at random times. I will close it, quit it, and then later it will pop on again. Has this happened to others? Is it because they changed something for Lion that now screws up the usage in Snow Leopard? Thanks for any advice.
    Jim

I never had the automatic downloads for apps checked. The original problem happened while I was working in Dreamweaver with some videos that I had edited in iMovie. I'm just chalking it up to Apple's desire to funnel so much traffic through iTunes in pursuit of greater control and the almighty dollar. Now that I'm not working with the vids it is not happening any more. Thanks to all who have responded.

  • Itunes keeps launching and relaunching

This just started happening today. I'm running itunes 7.01 and itunes launches, I quit, it relaunches over and over. I updated to 7.02. Same thing happens.
My programs are not shared even though I'm on a network.

Check Dashboard to see if you have any iTunes-related widgets running. If so, close them and see if that makes a difference.

  • ITunes keeps launching when IM message arrives

I use Mercury Messenger as a substitute for MS Messenger. I noticed a very odd behavior today. When I'm carrying on an IM conversation with Mercury Messenger in the foreground, everything is normal. However, if I jump to another app and someones sends me a message in the background, iTunes launches itself and songs begin to play! Any ideas on how to correct this? Thanks

Hey guys I'm having this issue too. It seems that it opens iTunes and puts an audio file in the music section called "MSN Message" with a length of 00:00. Don't understand it.
It's never happened before and only started occurring within the last month (using Mercury Messenger). What is the setting that has to be changed in order for this issue to stop? Would appreciate a response as I've tried a few things with no solution, and there doesn't seem to be much help from google searches.

  • ITunes keeps Launching since updating iPod/iPad to IOS 5.0

I upgraded to 10.5 with no issues that I'm aware of.  Last night I began updating my devices to IOS 5.0 and finished up today.  I closed iTunes - and 10 minutes later it opened again.  Closed it - it relaunched.  Did this a number of times - then shut down my compter and rebooted.  Same thing.  It doesn't actually appear to be doing anything - just opening and sitting there.
    Windows XP
    Lenovo Laptop
    All software updated
    Any ideas?

I noticed this problem first on my Windows 7x64 i3 laptop... I'd rather it not happen. Knowing how helpful Apple has been in the past at actually solving Windows problems. You might consider uninstalling and just syncing to iCloud unless you have a lot of music. As for me, I'm uninstalling it again on my laptop.

  • Itunes keeps launching all the time. can you help me fix it.

  • ITunes keeps launching even after closing.

After upgrading to Yosemite, iTunes will spontaneously start after closing iTunes 12.01.26

Close is not the same as Quit:
    click the red ball on the left top and iTunes window is closed, but iTunes is still running: see the light under the Dock icon;
to quit you must quit from the menu bar, or when it is the foremost window by CMD Q key combination.

  • Why Does iTunes Launch Automatically After A MP3 Download?

I recently updated to Leopard and I've discovered that iTunes will launch automatically after I download an MP3. This is annoying since I keep my MP3's on an external HD separate from my Download folder. You shouldn't have to keep iTunes open just because you've downloaded an MP3. If I download a PDF to my Download folder, Acrobat doesn't launch automatically. That's the kind of OS behavior I expect from Windows. How do I stop iTunes from behaving in this manner or is this another "genius" feature I'll have to put up with?

    Update:
If you're sure it's not your browsers, then most likely you have accessed iTunes' preferences and clicked the Set button for "Use iTunes for Internet music playback" (iTunes > Preferences > Advanced) at some point.
As you can see, there is not an option to undo this change. So, you will either need to use Property List Editor (if you have installed the Developer Tools with OS X), or a 3rd-party property list editor to undo the setting. Short of that, you would have to simply quit iTunes and move the file com.apple.iTunes.plist (/~username/Library/Preferences/) to the Desktop to back it up, or to the Trash--but don't empty it yet in case you want to restore it. Then, launch iTunes and go through the process of setting up the application's preferences again, but don't set the preference to use iTunes for Internet music playback this time.

  • ITunes 8.2 no longer launches automatically on iPhone connect ?

Is this something different with iTunes 8.2. iTunes always used to launch automatically after connecting iPhone. It will recognize phone but I have to launch iTunes manually and wait after I connect the phone.

Yes - there used to be a checkbox for this in iTunes preferences asking whether or not to automatically launch iTunes when connecting an ipod (maybe for phone to in pre 8.2 versions) but they took it out ??? Somebody figured out to keep iPhoto from launching you have to open a different program called Image Capture and go into the preferences and tell it not to launch any program when connecting a camera (which iphoto sees the phone as), but I don't know where they hid the itunes launch switch now ???
