ITunes library on a networked external hard drive

Recently, I want to upgrade to snow leopard (finally) but was short on hard disk space on my MacBook Pro and lacking a consistent backup solution. I added a 1TB time machine to my network and mounted an external hard drive to the Time Machine for media. The goal was to have my media on the drive and then back up all hard drives to the Time Machine. I copied the iTunes library to the hard drive and pointed iTunes to the new folder location. (I also moved photos and other media.) The media has been accessible and iTunes works fine (with occasional network interference) but I was reluctant to immediately delete the old iTunes library.
Well, I've finally reached the hard disk point that I must delete the old library, but as I was about to, I noticed that my "iTunes Library" database file and "iTunes Music Library.xml" omni outliner file in the original MacBook Pro Hard Drive Location were updated yesterday, not the same files I copied to the new iTunes folder on the network. I thought if I moved the library and redirected iTunes, I'd be done, but I guess not.
Questions:
1. Can I point iTunes to search for its database and XML files in the new folder on the network, and how?
2. Is that advisable, or should I delete the other music files from the "Music" location on my MacBook Pro and leave the database files remaining on the hard drive?
3. Are there any other considerations I've overlooked in trying to store my media library on a network mounted EHD?
Thanks for your help.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • How can i transfer my itunes library from a PC external hard drive to iMac?

I have recently bought a new iMac but my iTunes library is on an external hard drive that is formatted for PC use, this is then linked to my old PC laptop, how can i get the library onto my new iMac?

Drag the entire library to the Mac's internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that library. If the library only contains the music and not the iTunes database files, drag it into the open iTunes application window.

    Do this for all users.
NOTE: You must quit iTunes when switching users as the library can only be opened by one user at a time.

  • How do I get itunes library to move to external hard drive automatically?

I have a 250 GB Verbatim external hard drive. This hard drive has an existing itunes library from my PC. I figured out how to combine the two itunes libraries, (1 from PC and 1 from Macbook). I cannot figure out how to set up itunes to automatically save to external hard drive. In other words, I've gotten everything onto my Mac, but not onto the external, which is what I want. When I try to move the itunes folders to my Verbatim in Finder, it gives me the circle with the line through it. It will not let me move anything over to the Verbatim. Please help!

On the copying issue, if the drive was used with a PC initially it is quite possible it is formatted to NTFS.  Macs can read NTFS drives but not write to them  You could try to use a utility such as NTFS-3G to enable read-write, or you could use Disk Utility to reformat the drive to FAT (probably FAT32) which can be read by both PCs and Macs. FAT has certain disadvantages too, such as not being repairable by Macs, and there is a limit on single file sizes (2GB or 4GB depending upon the FAT version).
Once you get your whole iTunes folder (not just media) onto the external drive, start iTunes with the option key held down and  show it the new location.

  • I can't sync my ipod to my itunes library held on my external hard drive

I'm having trouble syncing my ipod (colour 20GB) to my I-tunes library. I moved to Australia, got a new laptop and brought my I-tunes library from the UK on my external hard drive. I've installed I-tunes on my new laptop here, and linked I-tunes to the external hard drive. All of the songs appear on my I-tunes library as on my previous computer when I open I-tunes, but when I connect my I-pod it does not sync to the I-tunes library. I've updated the software on the I-pod to the latest software, and I'm running the latest I-tunes on my computer. When I right click on the Ipod icon in Itunes and hit "sync" nothing happens.
I don't understand as the songs on my external hard drive are all in Itunes format, I used it at home and it worked without any problems. Is it because my Ipod is somehow still synced to my old laptop?
I have tried copying all of the songs to my local hard drive, and manually dragging and dropping tunes from the I-tunes library to my Ipod using I-tunes but nothing works.
Incredibly frustrating as I can't add or remove any songs to/from my Ipod! Can anyone help me I'm at my wits end!

  • I lost my iTunes library on a crashed external hard drive.  How can I import music from my iPod that was not originally purchased on iTunes?

The 500 gig hard drive on my 2008 iMac was so full it was running very slowly, so I transferred the iTunes library to an old external Maxtor 1T drive.  A few months later the Maxtor crashed, and the library went with it.  My 3rd G. iPod Touch still has the whole library on it, but I don't know if ALL the music will transfer back to the mac when the iPod syncs.  A portion of the music was from CDs we borrowed from our kids.  How can I get all of the music that is presently on my iPod to transfer back to a new iTunes v. 11.1.2 library on the mac?

One application that's able to accomplish what you want is called Senuti.

I've used it many times to recover music from my iPod to iTunes.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library back from an external hard drive?

Hi. Today, I bought a 1TB external hard drive, and I was very excited to transfer my music over to it. It worked fine for a couple of hours, but then, tragedy struck. Right in the middle of listening to a song, it stopped and Windows told me the device has malfunctioned. I tried everything, and I couldn't get it to work again. Luckily, I hadn't deleted the files from my internal hard drive, but I still have another problem. If I re-import all the music from my folders again, all my data such as playlists, ratings, and artwork is lost. I definitely don't want to do this again, but I don't know what else I can do. I can't set the default iTunes Media folder, because my albums are arranged in an iTunes Media folder to begin with. I can't simply put them all in iTunes Media folders, because I have 60 GB of music, and I want to keep spare copies without overblowing my internal hard drive. What do I do? Thanks.

I'm guessing you "consolidated" the library to the new location. If so this technique should let you connect a working of your library from before the migration.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
An alternative approach would be to repair the broken links with my FindTracks script.

  • HT1329 My large iTunes library is on an external hard drive. Can I set up iTunes on my new Macbook Pro and copy the library to it or are there any pitfalls?

I have my large iTunes library on an external hard drive. Can I set up ITunes on my new Macbook Pro and transfer/copy this library to the internal hard drive or are there any problems I should be aware of?

ITs an old Iomega 100gb external HD that has about 90gb of music on it. The Macbook has a 500gb HD. I would like to put the iTunes library on the internal HD so I have room to expand.
    Phil0124 wrote:
You can copy it to the internal hard drive as long as it fits on it. How big is your library, and how big is your internal HD?
The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine.

  • Successfully moved iTunes library to a bigger external hard drive.......

    Hi all,
Yesterday I successfully moved my iTunes media library over to a larger external hard drive for my profile. The problem I am having now is that my girlfriends profile is still pointing over to the old hard drive. I thought following the same steps would be the best way to get her pointed to the new location.
I updated the path in the iTunes preferences Advanced tab to the new location.
I started the "Consolidate" process and noticed that it was creating duplicates of everything that I copied (Consolidated) yesterday, so I stopped that before it got too far - last thing I want is to have to go through and find and delete all duplicates.
In addition to her profile on my Mac, there are 2 other profiles as well. How can I get all profiles to recognize that the iTunes library location has changed, with out creating multiple duplicates of each media item?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike

Drag the entire library to the Mac's internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that library. If the library only contains the music and not the iTunes database files, drag it into the open iTunes application window.
