"itunes library.tl can't be read" and my itunes won't open

Hi, Folks!  Get error msg -
"itunes library.tl cannot be read because of newer version"
and my itunes won't open at all. Somethiing's been corrupted and I don't know how/why or what to do  that will fix this file. I used File Explorer to search for it (hidden files too) and it doesn't appear anywhere on my C drive or in any aubdirectory!
Can someone PLEASE help me with this problem? I have tried to do a systematic uninstall in the order given on the Forum's help pages on uninstall and reinstall, and that didn't help - got the same error msg.

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.
Not sure if the following site/link will tell the method...

Unless you have attempted to downgrade to an older version of iTunes this is likely to be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

so my computer got unplugged and its battery died right as it was finishing an iTunes update. when i restarted it, i got the above message. i re-installed iTunes from the website and that didn't help. i went directly to the mp3 files and tried to open those. no go there either. :frustrating!!!
when the "dialog box" shows up with that message, there is an "OK" button, but there when you click on it, it just closes. there is no prompt or hint at what one can do to remedy this situation. any help?
btw, i have a Dell laptop running WindowsXP with all my iTunes music on a detached hard drive.

I already thanked you but under the other "post". I am ecstatically happy to have my old system back, and will never upgrade anything again .. fear I'm doomed to happy dinausaur-hood.

  • ITunes won't open. iTunes Library.itl can't be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

The error message I get when I try to open iTunes says, The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." It gives me the option to Quit or Download iTunes.  When I select Download iTunes it checks for software updates and says iTunes is up todate.  I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes and this didn't help.  It still wouldn't open because of the same error.

Normally you get this message if you downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but it can sometimes happen if an upgrade doesn't go through properly.
You should be able to wok round this by rebuilding your library from the xml file as in this Apple article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • TS1368 The file iTunes library.itl can not be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.

Why can't I get into my itunes library anymore?  I've purchased hundreds of songs in the past 3 years. When it asks me "would you like to download the newer version? I click yes and successfully download the latest yet I still cant access my library.

Unless you have attempted to downgrade to an older version of iTunes this is likely to be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • ITunes Library File can't be read

It's a mess! I had to reinstall my iPod software and know when i go to open iTunes is giving this message:
file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer verion of iTunes.
what!!???? i already downloaded the updates and it's still giving me this message. help!!!! iTunes won't even open!!!
    PC   Windows XP

    hi Braz!
file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer verion of iTunes.
although folks usually get this message if they've downgraded their itunes version, i've seen it happen once or twice if an upgrade failed silently. i think what is happening is that the library file gets converted to the new version, but the program files don't change.
try the upgrade again. does it go through more smoothly this time?

  • When I choose an album to play in my itunes library, only one song will play and then itunes stops. Also, when I click on next, itunes just stops playing.

When I choose an album to play in my itunes library, only one song plays and then itunes stops. Also, when I click on the next button, itunes stops. How can I play an entire album through without stopping after each song?

Sounds like you have accidentally unchecked all items. In the Songs view ctrl-click on any empty checkbox.

  • I moved iTunes music to my hard drive "D" and now it won't open!

My hard drive "C" was getting somewhat full, so I decided to move my iTunes music files over to my second hard drive "D" (I have a dual hard drive on my computer). When I try and open iTunes, it says, "The folder 'iTunes' cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the 'Music' folder."
I cannot open the "Music" folder, because when I do, it just opens up the same window I was already in when I tried to open it. The main reason I want to open iTunes is so I can reset my iPod because it is not working anymore. The scroll wheel, the hold button, the backlight, and it automatically sleep mode (after not touching it for a couple of minutes) is all that works. I cannot click anything.
I have moved all of my iTunes folders back over to my "C" drive, but it still won't work. I also reinstalled iTunes in the "Music" folder, and it won't work. Basically nothing has worked!

You might find this article useful, don't be put off by the title, the process is substantially similar moving to another internal drive: iLounge - Managing your iTunes Library on an External Hard Drive

  • HT201322 itunes 11.0.3 - in my iTunes library I can no longer see purchased TV shows and Movies that are not downloaded to my computer. also In my Itunes account i have no hidden TV shows or Movies

    I'm running itunes 11.0.3 -
in my iTunes library I can no longer see purchased TV shows and Movies that are not downloaded to my computer.
In my Itunes account i have no hidden TV shows or Movies
I used to be able to view all cloud and downloaded content.  I no longer can.

There used to be option to show items that are in the cloud in your library, but I can't find where that now is (unless it's been removed). You should be able to see what items that you can re-download via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (at the top right of that there should be a 'not on this computer' button)
Edit : Just seen your reply, though I don't appear to have that setting on mine.
