ITunes, music folder and iPhone

After having tried almost everything, I post a topic about a very frustrating issue: iPhone's Other files.
I have over a GB of other files and the size is increasing every time I sync the phone, especially if I added new music.
I followed http://www.ipodrepublic.com/iphone/fixing-issue-other-files-iphone-memory/2010/0 3/31/ but it didn't helped. When I sync again my music, the problem is the same as before. Restoring or resetting didn't helped so far.
I think there's something wrong with my computer in the iTunes music folder. Can anybody help me with that?
If there is a solution for this problem, please let me know!
I didn't restored and configured the iPhone as new because I'd like to see if there are less invasive methods first.
Thank you very much

Go to iTunes plug your iPhone then go to apps tab and scroll down under the apps box. Here are some of the apps that contains data. You can't see data of a game or some others apps here.
If you are running iOS 5 you can check one by one your apps in Settings>General>Usage. These sizes are the apps sizes(except Music and Photos & Camera) but if you tap on them you can see the "documents and data" size.

  • How to find files in your iTunes Library & NOT in Your iTunes Music folder AND visa versa.

Finding Files in iTunes Music folder that are not Listed in iTunes
Make  2 Smart Play Lists and 1 Static Playlist as follows:
    1. Make a smart playlist called “All Files” with this rule: “Artist” is not “123456789″ (or any nonsense name that won’t be in your library).
    2. Make a static playlist called “All Live Files”.
    3. Make a smart playlist called “Missing Files” with these rules: Match all of the following rules, Playlist is “All Files”, Playlist is not “All Live Files”
    Preform the following operations:
    4. Select all the files from “All Files” and drag them into “All Live Files”. The dead files marked  ! will not copy over.
    5. “Missing Files” will contain all of your dead files. Select all and delete (Option+Delete). Voila, a nice clean iTunes library.
I keep these three playlists in their own folder. Whenever I gather more than a couple dead tracks for whatever reason, I delete all the tracks in “All Live Files” and repeat steps 4 and 5.
Finding Files in iTunes Library Are Not Present in iTunes Music Folder
Search on ‘Net for an Applescript called “Music Folder Files Not Added.” This will be at a site called Doug’s Applescripts and costs a mere $1.99. Install and follow instructions. This script also happens of clean up gremlins such as Podcasts that won’t go away, etc.
    <Edited by Host>

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

  • Why is itunes only importing a few songs out of many in itunes music folder and then creating a new folder named "music" contianing those few songs?

This problem has come up after installing a new hard disk to replace a failed one.  I restored the music just fine but iTunes only recognizes a few of the song tracks and then creates a new folder within iTunes called "music"  that contains those few songs.  Tried deleting the .itl and .xml files and reimporting via "Add Library Folder" option with similar results.

  • ITunes Music folder is dated 1/24/84 and will not open

    iMac, Late 2009
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
    16 GB 1067 MHz
    iTunes 12.0.1
I cannot see inside my iTunes Music folder  (home/iTunes/iTunes Music) or iTunesU or Mobile Applications.  The folders are pale and dated (created and modified) 1/24/84, 2 A.M.
iTunes app seems to find music and movies fine tho.   When I first noticed this, the Music/iTunes folder had created a 'iTunes Music 2' folder and all the music/movies folders would show up in there.  I tried to 'move' those into the original iTunes Music folder (and it acted like it moved) - deleted the '2' folder and renamed '2' to plain iTunes Music.   Still the same pale folder, inaccessible.
I tried repairing privileges (twice), resetting PRAM (twice) deleting any apple.com preferences referencing iTunes and even the Finder plist.  Nothing is helping these sick folders. - But, as I said the iTunes app seems to work fine.  I just need to see inside the music folder.
I use home sharing and whether another machine is on or not makes no difference.  I have a new MBP and it's iTunes seems fine.  I have tried an app called Files Property Editor to change the date on the folder, but it doesn't seem to work.
    Thank you for any help!

  • ITunes Music Folder Organization Inproperly

After I imported music of the album "Wings Of Song", by James Galway, from my removable hard disk to "iTunes Music Folder" and had iTunes organized it, I discovered something that's a little bit wierd. All the music I just imported is put under the folder Compilation\Wings of Song. This means that when iTunes organizing the music folder, it unexpectedly "thought" all these music are by the artist Compilation. What is the reason? Could anyone tell me why? Thank you!

The Compilation directory is how iTunes organizes albums that Gracenote (CDDB) considers works of various artists or collections of songs from the same artist, but differing albums (like "Best Of's" or "Greatest Hits").
The CDDB is not always consistent, as some Greatest Hits are marked as compilations and others are not. This really irked me in the beginning as I was wondering why some of my albums went missing. At first I tried to manually reorganize and move the files, but it was cumbersome. I stumbled on the "Compilations" function and it made things much easier.
For instance, if you have a Greatest Hits album of U2 sitting in the Compilations directory and would rather have it under the U2 directory (where I feel it better belongs), you would perform the process outlined below and the album and songs would move to its "improved" location.
That's why you have folders in your Compilations directory. Some you may wish to keep there, some you may want to move to a more appropriate place. This is how. Try moving some of them to their Artist's folder (if you have any that would qualify).
    First check your Preferences:
-- Advanced/General: Keep iTunes Music folder organized (on)
-- Advanced/General: Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library (off) - change it back to 'on' after the song switch, if you want
To move an Album from the Compilations folder after it was imported from a CD (or otherwheres):
-- Highlight the collection of songs on that CD within the main Library
    -- Right-click, 'Get Info'
-- Remove the 'Part of Compilation' check-mark - turn it to 'no'
    -- Click 'OK'
iTunes will reorganize your PC folder structure, moving the songs from the Compilation folder to their Artist folder.
To defeat a Compilation designation prior to ripping the tracks from a CD, go to 'Get Info' on the CD and make sure that the 'Part of Compilation' box is not checked. This will keep the album under its designated Artist folder.
This is how I keep my music organized. I only want 'true' compilations under the Compilations folder, not some of the Artist's 'Greatest Hits'. You may have other desires.

  • Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?

I'm trying to simplify the results of my own occasional user error.
Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?
I have my library stored on an external drive that I keep turned off when not in use. If I accidentally start iTunes with that drive off, it recreates the original iTunes Music folder and directs itself there.
Can that behavior be stopped? It seems like there should be a way for iTunes to send a pop up or something, rather than this automated over ride to manual settings.

Yeah, I know I don't have an end of the world scenario here.
But just remounting the drive doesn't do it. I have to go back into iTunes and reset the folder location. Then wait several minutes as it all reorganizes itself.
I know just leaving the drive on is the easiest answer. It causes too much of a domestic dispute about all the blinking boxes I have running all the time. I have convinced her that the green one on the AEBS has to be on if she wants internet.

  • New files in iTunes music folder

Hello...I made a change from a Windows computer to the iMac. I copied all my music files from my Windows computer to my external hard drive, and then copied from the external hard drive to my iTunes music folder. When I compared the info between my iTunes music folder, and the music files on my external hard drive, the iTunes music folder had more files. By looking through the files it looks like two extra files were added to each album folder....a folder.jpg file and a AlbumArtSmall.jpg file was created. I didn't have those files coming from my windows folder, how come they show up now? Are those two files necessary?

I have a few of these also - all from downloaded albums, which would either have been .zip or .rar files when they arrived on my desktop. This ring any mental bells with you? (I never questioned what they are, and I only imported the music files to iTunes).

  • Songs in Itunes Music Folder Won't Play

My Itunes will frequently not play songs that are clearly in the Itunes music folder and can be found. When trying to drag the song into itunes to play it will not play either. Windows Media Player and Winamp will play the songs. Basically I don't understand why it won't play the songs that are in it's folder.

Usually, it is corrupted MP3 tag headers.

  • Missing files after moving itunes music folder

i moved my itunes music folder to my external hard drive using the directions posted here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 to the letter. a lot of things transfered but now when i look in my itunes music folder and compare to my itunes library, i see that a lot of things are missing. i really don't want to have to go through every single artist folder and check every song. shouldn't consolidating my library have taken care of this?

I just had a very similar issue, I moved my iTunes library from a 120Gb Drive to a 500Gb and the library was a bit corrupted because the main drive was full b/c of an error, but that's besides the fact.
SOLUTION To missing files, that aren't really missing because they exist and were all copied no problems.
go to the iTunes folder in your Home folder, and move the iTunes Music Library.xml file to your desktop (with itunes closed of course)
Then re-open itunes and the library file that's not an xml doc, will re-search your files and all should be well.
You should be able to safely delete the xml doc now, because iTunes made a new one.

  • Rebuild iTunes with Just VERY LARGE iTunes Music Folder

    Hello,
As much as I tried to back every bit of my iTunes database up regularly, I failed to assure the quality of these files. Well, I had a family member accidentally delete the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files (yup, my mistake to allow them access to my Mac in the first place). It is only now that I realize the most recent backup copy of these files are corrupted. The really good news here is that I have multiple intact copies of my entire iTunes Music Folder. My goal is to recreate my iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files to accommodate it.
Now, here is the kicker. My database is 38000 songs and 190 GB large! I certainly know how to add songs iTunes, but it seems as though it chokes with large projects like this and misses random parts of the tag information. So, what is the best way to get me out of this hole, with the least amount of trouble and most efficient restorative actions? While I wait for an answer, I am also researching various other options and digging deep into the root to rescue deleted files.
If we learn from our mistakes, then I obtained my PhD years ago,
    Dr. Z.

    Dr. Z,
My iTunes library is about the same size. I am experiencing a little different problem though. At times when I start iTunes up I get a message stating that my library is corrupt and it then tries to restore it from the xml file. It finishes, but doesn't get every song. I then have to select all song and clear them while keeping the files intact on the hard drive. I then have to add my iTunes music folder and all its contents using the iTunes "Add to Library" function. I gets all the songs, but of course now all the dates, when the songs were added to the library, have the current day's date. I have to repeat this whole scenario about three times a week. Grrrrr...
It seems like iTunes isn't capable of handling large amounts of songs. I'm sure it shoud be able to, but it sure isn't at the moment.
As to your problem, what if you try adding your songs a chunck at a time instead of all at once? Maybe that will keep your data intact. Just a thought. Might work. I've seen stranger things work.

  • Utility for Managing iTunes Music Folder

    Hello,
I am looking for a MAC utility program (Apple or 3rd party) that will help me more easily manage my iTunes Music folder and playlists. For example, does anyone know of a utility that will make a list of songs in the Music folder that do NOT appear in any of the playlists?
I have 20,000+ songs and this information would be helpful to know - without having to check song by song. Thank you. Dale

Have you not yet tried to create a Smart Playlist? Just use the File > New Smart Playlist menu in iTunes, and in the first drop-down list, select Playlist. In the next drop-down list, select "is not," and in the third drop-down list, select one of your playlists you'd like to exclude. Then click the + button and repeat the process to exclude all of your other playlists. When that's been taken care of, click OK, and you have a new Smart Playlist containing only files not in the excluded playlists.

I think this article will help you find the media in your library.
Where are my iTunes files located?

Discovering and changing the iTunes Media folder location
Note: You would usually only change the iTunes Media folder location to share music between accounts on the same computer. See this article for specific steps on how to accomplish this. Also, see this article if you want to know how to move your music to a new computer.
Mac OS X: Click the iTunes menu and choose Preferences.
Windows: Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced pane. iTunes displays the location of your iTunes Media folder.
    You can then:
Note where your media folder is, such as for backing up your media.
Use the Reset button to reset it's location to the default (which is the iTunes folder).
Click the Change button to select a folder for a new location. Once you change this location:
If you make a new or alternate iTunes library, the new location will be used by that library.
Existing files will not be moved unless you choose File > Library > Organize library and choose the option to "Consolidate files."

  • HT4527 I want to move my music onto my computer, I have music stored on my laptop not in itunes, how do i put it into an itunes media folder and consolidate it without itunes?

Basically I didnt have enough room to consolidate my itunes libary on my C drive, I moved them to my D, they then were no longer in my itunes libary, I moved them back but the songs are still no longer in my libary. This is not a major issue, the problem is getting all my music into a itunes media folder and then consolidating it without the use of iTunes.

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you need to do.
