ITunes not quitting

I am not able to restart or shut down my iMac for the past few days, since computer says, iTunes stopped shutting down.  When I tried to manually quit the application, next moment it restarts.  This has become a big nusance and I am fed up.  But, all other activities of iTunes are working fine like sync and all.  Is it by default, made like this by apple due to wifi sync of iOS devices? or any problem with my computer?  I am confussed and please help me.  Thanks in advance.

Do you have speakers or headphones connected to your Mac? Some people have reported that if the speaker plug does not connect properly with the jack iTunes starts over and over again.
Have you tried to Force Quit iTunes from the Apple Menu to be abe to restart your Mac?

  • ITunes will not quit - even "Force Quit"

When I installed the 8.0.1 patch on my iMac, I noticed that iTunes quit working correctly after importing some new tracks. It would not quit. I had to force quit but then it would not open correctly the next time and it would not quit. From that point on, my computer went down hill. When I installed the latest security patch and executed a reboot, the system would not come up. I used my 10.5 DVD and repaired permissions, etc. Nothing worked. I booted off my backup drive and everything works fine.
Tonight I experienced the same issue with iTunes not quitting on my MacBook Pro !
I have been a Mac user since my Mac Plus so I know what I am doing. I also have 15 years experience as a Solaris sys admin.

Do you have SRS iWOW installed?
Before the latest update you could just turn it off, and it wasn't a problem. Now it's a problem whether its on or off.
SRS iWOW starts a process called "genredetection" that checks the status of iTunes, and if it's not running, launches it. I kill genredetection (sometimes there are several instances of it running if iTunes was relaunched) Then iTunes will quit. There is information on SRS iWOWs website. They are aware of the problem.

  • ITunes (Windows) does not quit properly

Closing windows version using "x" at top right corner of screen or selecting Exit from file menu makes iTunes clear the screen, but it's still runnning.
I have to do a ctrl-alt-del and then manually quit the process tree.
Otherwise, re-clicking on the iTunes shortcut or even doing a "Start->iTunes" will get you a spinning clock and then nothing on screen.
Windows task manager will claim it's running, but there is no interface.
Sometimes Windows shutdown is hung up because a program named (looks like about 20 open boxes but with an iTunes logo) is running, but will not quit.
itunes Mac on same network connection works flawlessly.
    Any suggestions?

Could be antivirus or malware, have you checked your PC for Viruses and ad/spyware? Also try disabling antivirus. you could run a check on windows and see if some files in windows is corrupt by running chkdsk/ error checking.
Open "My Computer" rightclick on your harddrive, hit properties and select the "tools" tab. under "Error Check" hit check now. you wll get a pop up basicly saying it will run when you reboot or something like that. hit OK and then reboot. the program will run after booting up, and when its done it will load windows.

  • When backing up iTunes, how can I finish out a CD that's not quite full?

I have a CD that still has about 200mb of room, but iTines wants me to insert a completely blank one. Is there a way to get it to finish up the one that is not quite full?
Also, while I'm here, I'd really like to burn the files onto DVDs since they hold more info, but it keeps telling me the disc is not blank when it most definitely is. Is there a way to resolve this?

iTunes doesn't offer the same burning features as programs like Nero, etc. If you want to add another session to already-burned CDs, assuming the discs haven't been "closed" already by iTunes, then I would simply recommend using another burning application.

  • Itunes will not quit or force quit .  light simply stays on?  any suggestions?

itunes will not quit or force quit .  light simply stays on?  any suggestions?

I have a 13 inch MBP. I had to log out. It would not let me restart or shut down unless iTunes was closed. And, iTunes was not responding to the FORCE QUIT option. It would quit, then reappear. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes will not quit properly in Mac OS X Yosemite - force quit required

I upgraded to to Mac OS X Yosemite last week and have updated all of my other software as the updates became available.  Since the update, iTunes has not always worked properly (e.g., recognizing devices when they are plugged in).  However, the one consistent bug is that iTunes will not quit.  Regardless of how I try to quit the application (menu, dock, computer shut down/restart) it will not quit.  No beach ball appears and in the "force quit" menu it does not show as "not responding".  In fact, I can still continue to use iTunes after trying to quit the application.
The only way to exit the application is by force quitting.  I would prefer to not continue to do this but I have been unable to find a solution.
    Thanks,
    Alan

  • ITunes will close but will not quit

Okay. I've tried reading some of the questions and answers regarding similar issues but none seem to speak to mine.
iTunes will "close" when I choose "Quit" or cmd-q, but will not "quit". This seems to only happen when I have recently visited the iTunes store. It does not happen when I am browsing my own library.
Important things to note and summary:
•I do NOT have iWow. Don't even know what it is or where to get it.
•This only happens when accessing iTunes Store. Not sure exactly what causes it to happen but it only happens when accessing the store.
•Doesn't seem to happen (or can't remember it ever happening) when I sync my iPhone AFTER visiting the store. Weird.
•I CAN force quit the application and reopen with no problem. However, this is an issue when shutting down the computer (not plugged in) only to find out right before the battery dies that it NEVER shut down because iTunes never "quit".
    Any suggestions?

UPDATE!! Seems to happen EVERYTIME I click on an album or app to read about it. For instance, clicking in an iPhone app to read the description in determining whether or not to buy/download. Clicking on an album/movie to do the same. Either of these workflows (as JUST tested) seem to cause iTunes to not respond.
    Again, any suggestions?

Usually issues installing iTunes on Windows can be resolved after going through these troubleshooting steps. If one step does not resolve your issue, proceed to the next:

Same situation immediately after Restart and full Shut Down.

  • ITune not working, upgrade failed

I am unable to upgrade to iTune 11.1 on my Mac (OS X Lion 10.7.5)  The upgrade downloads and runs for a long time with and it hangs when it gets to "Running Package Scripts"    After a time it then throws the following error message:  The update "iTunes" cannot be installed. An unexpected error has occurred.
After I attempted this today it froze up my computer and I had to do a Safe reboot just to get it running again.   Also had to do the type of reboot that resets the screen settings (Control, Option, P, R)
Now iTunes will not work at all on my Mac.  When I click of the iTune icon a box appears on my screen that is blank except for an OK button.   When I click theOK button the the little "dot" under the iTunes icon goes off.
VERY weird . . . anyone out there have any ideas how to fix this.   As it is now iTunes is completely non functional on my imac.

    Hello frances219,

  • ITunes NOT Playing tracks it used to play pre ITunes 8.1!!!!!

    Hello,
I really wish apple had better customer service. It's online support is a joke. I've been a loyal apple user ever since the apple hammer took out the regime of IBM in the 80s, but it seems now it is becoming more like Microsoft in the early 90s.
    What the **** happened?
Okay gripe out of the way now. Here's the problem no one seems to be addressing with iTunes (which has a slew of new problems with each update - better BETA testing people!). I have certain tracks in my iTunes Library that played fine until the iTunes 8 update. NOw only certain songs or albums won't play. Changing id tags doesn't help. If I try to reload them into my library after deleting them they will not add to the library any more. Why? Am I missing something simple here?

    HI Michael,
If you haven't done this, try deleting the iTunes preference file: com.apple.iTunes.plist
    Quit iTunes first...
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to your Desktop.
Launch iTunes. See if iTunes behaves... if it does, drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Your Mac will create a new pref file for you. You will have to reset your iTunes preferences but at least you'll be rid of a corrupted pref file.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. That can fix a myriad of bugs on a Mac.

  • Automatically add files to iTunes not processing mp4 files on Windows 8.1

I have iTunes 12.1.1.4 install on a Windows 8 (x64) system.  I have been using iTunes for quite some time and my library is located at c:\Music.  On earlier versions (version 10 of iTunes for example) I would drop an MP4 file into c:\Music\Automatically Add to iTunes" directory and iTunes would process this file and add to either the movies or TV Shows section.
I have not used this feature in some time but now have started to.  Currently, if I place the mp4 in that directory, iTunes does not do anything with the video.  I have gotten to using "Add Folder to Library" and iTunes will then process the directory.  I do have "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checked.
How can I get iTunes to recognize that a file has been placed in this directory and process it?

    Two possibilities:
iTunes has processed the file but has categorized it as "Home Movies" rather than other video kinds - in this case you'll be able to find it under that heading in iTunes.  Note that there's a bug in iTunes 12 where even if you then change the media kind - for example, to "TV Show" or "Movie" - it will be shown in the new category in the iTunes UI but the files will still be in the "Home Movies" folder under iTunes Media
If iTunes has not been able to process the file, you should find within a Not Added folder under Automatically Add to iTunes - the most likely cause of this is that the MP4 files are using a codec that is not compatible with iTunes.

  • Itunes wont quit after 10.7.3 update

    Hello
After updating my Macbook air to 10.7.3 my iTunes (10.5.3) will now not quit. It works fine and starts fine but when i try and quit i get the beachball of death. I have to then force quit it.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
    Cheers
    W

I finally backed off 10.7.3 back to 10.7.2.  Itunes still was misbehaving though like this and I started getting your stuff is not authorized when syncing iOS devices this morning.  I think there are probably several things going on from what i read. I was not having problem with 10.5.3 before the 10.7.3 update however. Not sure how all figures in but it did.  But as day has gone on I look back at my Pro via screen sharing and the syncing of one iPad sitting there wirelessly now works fine (after initial attempt with errors, authorization issues and such) so it seems to be smoothing out but time will tell.  I think I am going to wait to see how this all pans out before I attempt 10.7.3 again. Maybe a fix on it and a 10.5.4 itunes fix may help once apple figures out issues people are having?
