ITunes on Server

I have a question about sharing an itunes library across a workgroup. I am wondering if its possible to keep one central library for all my different computers running itunes (3) and have all of them run congruently at a time.
I have the primary computer, with an external drive hooked up that is hosted as a server for the network, that has all the raw data files on it for the songs and videos, in H:/MEDIA/Shared. I have the latest update of itunes on the second computer, and it is set so that the "itunes music library folder" is located on H:/MEDIA/Shared, as it is set on the primary computer.
What file is located on the local drive of the primary computer that controls the library, and where would I find it, or where would I go to find the file path? Then in theory, you just need to move that file to the server drive, redirect the primary and secondary computers back to it and it then it should work.
Both the raw data files and the library files would be on the shared drive.
My problem is, I just don't know where to find the library folder.

If you move the ITL to the share, only one user can open it at a time. Subsequent users will get a message that the ITL file is locked.
If you want multiple concurrent users to have access to one itunes library, look into a 3rd-party program such as TuneRanger or SuperSync.

  • Itunes update server could not be contacted

I am trying to update itunes for my computer (with windows 7) but every time I press "Check for updates" under the "Help" tab in itunes, a box pops up and tells me that "The itunes update server could not be contacted." It tells me to test my internet connection. My internet is fine (I can even surf through the itunes store and buy music). I also adjusted my firewall for itunes like the diagnostics test suggested. No luck. Same message over and over. It's pretty frustrating because I have a brand new ipod touch that I want to activate, but I can't until I update my itunes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you running AVG as an AV? I have had problems since last week with iTunes losing my library, think I've sorted this by making iTuness an exception in the AV but now can't contact the update server, coincidence?
I know that the latest update of AVG has been conflicting through other posts, what do you think, sorry it isn't a solution!

  • After attempting to update to ios 7, my iphone is stuck in recovery mode and will not connect to the itunes software server.

After attempting to update to ios 7, my iphone is stuck in recovery mode and will not connect to the itunes software server.  I have already tried the resetting with power swich and home button and plugging into computer but it says the "iPhone software update server cannot be contacted."  I am locked out of my phone.  Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this issue and get the phone working again.  I will add that I am now trying to restore it on a different computer with a lower version of itunes, but the computer that it initially happened on had the updated itunes and gave me the same result ... nothing.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Try going to recovery mode as described here.  You may have to try this more than once to succeed.
Use the original iTunes that the iPhone synced with.

  • Error message received: The iTunes update server could not be contacted

Please help! I'm using a windows 7 laptop. The iTunes store is not displaying images, and if I try to import a CD it will not access the gracenote database for track info.Tried updating but got the error message 'the itunes update server could not be contacted'. I'm accessing the internet via a Tmobile dongle and all other web content is working . I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, checked my driver are up to date and that my AVG firewall allows iTunes through.I have disabled the windows firewall.I tried disabling the AVG one completely too but that had no effect so I'm stuck - can anyone help?

Not sure if you already fixed this problem or not, but I recently upgraded my laptop to Win7 and ran into the same issue.  My Internet connection was working fine, I could even browse the store within iTunes, just couldn't download any software or firmware updates.  I fixed it by editing the "hosts" file located in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder.  Open it in notepad with admin rights (right click notepad & select "Run as administrator").  Uncomment (delete the hash symbol "#") the last 2 lines or the ones that consist of "127.0.0.1   localhost" and "::1   localhost".  Restart iTunes and see if this works (if you haven't already found a solution).

My internet works fine and I have tried back dozens of times with same result.

Did you ever figure out the problem? "Contact Software Manufacturer"?? That sounds ominous... I've got the same issue and I'm pretty durn aggravated right about now....
    Thanks!

  • The itunes update server could not be contacted. Ran diagnostic and followed many support reccomendations with on success.

For at least the last 36 hours I have been unable to download updates from the itunes server for either itunes itself, or for iOS for my iphone (I need this since I am locked out of my phone). I was able to get around the problem of not being able to update itunes from the itunes server by downloading 11.0.4.4 from apple.com instead, but I don't believe I can do this for the latest iOS.
I have tried troublshooting from the support instructions for hours with no luck. Itunes is the only program that is having internet connectivity issues. I have tried disabling windows firewall, completely uninstalling my antivirus, and logging in/running itunes as an administrator. I have purged my hosts file and made sure that LAN settings are set to auto-detect. I have rebooted my router. There are no third party programs running that filter internet connections.
    What else can I try?

I have completed the Advanced iTunes Store Troublshooting workthrough and my problem persists.
For reference I will detail the steps I have followed from the Advanced Support link iOS *08* provided above.
    Isolate the issue:
    1) the problem is with iTunes (I can connect to other secure websites, including the apple webpage + login).
    2) verified the problem is not with the network (other devices on my network can connect and download iTunes updates).
    3) I cannot resolve the problem by connecting to another network.
    4) I have created inbound and outbound rules to allow all traffic to/from ports 80, 443, 3689, 5297,  5298, 5353, 8000-8999, and 42000-42999. I have allowed these ports full access to all network types and all programs. I have also made sure that all apple products, especially itunes, are allowed in the list of windows firewall exceptions.
    5) My date, time, and timezone are correct.
    6) I am using iTunes as an administrator. I have posted the results of the diagnostic network tests above in my Original Post.
    Blocked by software Firewall:
I have allowed an exception in the firewall for itunes and bonjour.
It seems to be the case that:
"If there's no firewall preventing access, but the iTunes Store still does not work while other Internet services (websites) work, the iTunes Store may be blocked by your configuration."
    Blocked By Configuration:
I have run iTunes Diagnostics (results above) and the "Secure link to iTunes Store" section did not pass
I opened IE, made sure I am "Never dialing a connection"
My LAN settings are set to "Automatically detect settings"
I do not have any proxy settings
I have unchecked "Check for server cerificate revocation*" under Advanced IE properties
I have enabled "Use SSL 3.0" and "Use TLS 1.0"
I saved and restarted. Still no joy.
    Rebuild Network Information
I flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
As mentioned above I reset the host file to default, and also tried to alternate method outlined in the support document involving creatings a "Copy of hosts" file and moving, editing, and returning the file to drivers/etc.
    I then restarted.
Please Help! This is getting rediculous!

  • Reliability of Itunes U  Server

How reliable is the Itunes U server? Apple says that Itunes U is up 24/7 but how reliable is the server really? Can we depend on Itunes U to really be there even at 3 or 4 in the morning?

I can offer you this from my own experience using iTunes U for the last year.
It has been extremely reliable. We put all of our 1st and 2nd year Medical School Lecture up withing 45 minutes of the completition of the lectures and the students access them 24/7. At our school, I do mean 24/7 and when something is not availble I hear about...believe me.
Does this mean that it never goes down or never seems sluggish. No
Is it dependable and as good as the bandwidth available. Yes

  • TS3694 Mac unable to connect with ITunes Update Server - why?

Whenever I try to check for updates on iTunes on my Mac, I get this message: iTunes can’t verify the identity of the server “ax.itunes.apple.com”.
Followed by this: The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later.
There is no problem with the internet connection, and all other things seem to load properly.
It means I am unable to update my iphone either, and am stuck on IOS 4.3.1.
Any suggestions on how to solve this please?

    Hey hkw7,
Try out the following steps. Usually step 1 will resolve the issue:
Update iTunes to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. To configure your firewall, please refer to the "Blocked by firewall" section in this article.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Click here to find out how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you are receiving a specific error message you may want to see, the "Specific Conditions and Alert Messages" section in this article as needed.
If the issue still persists, contact your internet service provider and confirm that the ports and servers in this article are enabled over your network.
