Itunes on two computers

We have two computers in the house. Both have Itunes installed and we regularly download music from CDs and Itunes onto the multiple Ipods. The issue is when one Ipod is filled with music from one computer is taken to the other computer. How can we "sync" the Ipod to the computer (the second one)? When we plug in the recently updated Ipod to the second computer we get a message stating that there is another music list resident and do we want to link to this older list.
Any thoughts on how to sync the recently loaded Ipod to the second computer?

The iPod can only 'sync' with one computer. If you want to use it with another, you'll have to manage it manually:

  • ITunes on two computers, how can I sync from both

I guess what I want to do is sync Itunes amongst two computers.
When I got my Ipod for Christmas, at the outset I set up Itunes on my son's laptop. And up to this point I have been syncing from this computer.
Now I want to start to sync from my own laptop (actually I want to be able to sync from both computers) and not loose any content.
I do have the January software update and it was installed from my son's computer. I don't want to loose this update if I sync with my computer.
To date, my Ipod has worked flawlessly. I am hoping not to create a problem by introducting my Ipod to my laptop and trying to sync the Ipod from both computers.
I am not too technically inclinded, so I would appreciate any response to take this into account when replying. Thanks.

There is also an option in iTunes. Go to File>Back up to disc. It will then give you some options of what type of back up you want to do. And don't forget hat if you have music on your iPod that is a form of a back up as well. If it is purchased music from the iTunes store, and you loose your music from system crash or whatever. You can re-install iTunes and then connect you iPod and go to Store >Authorize Computer > enter password and then go to File> Transfer Purchases. Now if you have ripped music and loose it you can use any search engine and search for Ipod Ripper programs. These are third party softwares, so basically it means that they work but Apple does not endorse or support them. But trust me when I tell you if you get one that you have to pay a fee for they work.

  • Can I have the same itunes on two computers?

I want to have the same info on one computer, mine as i do on my husbands. He doesn't use itunes & sometimes we only take one computer with us. I would like for them to be able to sync together with mine & his laptops.

    Welcome to AD!
Yes, you can do this. It takes a little setting up. Here is a CNET video that I thnk explains it very well:

  • Can you listen to iTunes on two computers at the same time?

If I've got iTunes playing on one computer, is it possible to listen on another computer on the same network what's playing on the first computer? I've often got two computers on the go over two floors and it would be smart if they were playing the same music at the same time. Thanks for your help.

Hi Andy, if you want to listen through remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express you can choose the remote speakers (or computer) from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window
However, to the best of my knowledge you can only listen to iTunes through one set of speakers at a time.

  • How do You Sync two itunes on two computers with Touch?

Hi. I own two computers. I have some purchases on my Mac Pro. I have some purchases on my Mac Book Pro. Also, I've made some purchases on my iPod Touch.
I've noticed that the screen that used to show my what was on my old Nano is now blank of actual songs and only shows the sync settings of the Touch.
So, it's impossible to pull songs off the touch onto each system - least it seems that way for me.
What I really want to do is sync everything up on my network here at the house and not waste a lot of DVD's making copies of things to stick in another computer. Where is the "Sync ALL" button!
Also, what's the best way to make backups? I read a post here about Backups vs Clones? What's the story there?
    Thanks for your help!
    Glen

You'll have to back up manually and transfer your purchases as well before you let iTunes erase your phone. Transferring data before setting it up again is covered in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
After your phone got set up again, use the manual backup to get your data and settings back.
If you want to copy media you did nor buy in iTunes, you'll have to use 3rd party software.

  • ITunes on two computers, how to interact

How do import songs from one mac to the other with iTunes.
I can't find a way to solve this.
Both iTunes contains about 4000 songs. It's a **** of a job adding a song to the library looking in the finderlist for a particular song.
I download on two computers and I like the two iTunes libraries identical. So anyone with a quick and smooth fix.

  • I have a question about downloading and itunes on TWO computers.

Where I work I have really fast internet, perfect for downloading movies, etc.  At home, in the sticks, I have slow internet.  Is there any way to rent/buy media on my work computer itunes (Win) to take home (say on my iPhone) and sync with my Mac iTunes?
    Thanks!

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.

  • Using itunes with two computers

I use two computers, one in my lounge and one in my bedroom. Both the itunes version are 5.01 and work well. However I am unable to add songs easily to both itunes libaries at the same time. How can I keep both libaries up to date? For example I buy tunes from itunes in my bedroom and then have to add them indivually with the computer in the lounge? Windows Media can see new tunes apear is there a way itunes can do the same?
Thanks , any help would be greatly appreciated

    hi Anthony!
as far as i'm aware (but i'm not up-to-date on research on this topic at the moment), there isn't an automatic way of keeping the two libraries aligned. this document might be useful:

  • ITunes on two computers - keeping ratings and file info in synch?

I have my iTunes files on two computers (and thus have used two of the 10 that I am permitted). When I rate a file on one computer, or change the info (to add genre or artist info) on one computer, how can I can duplicate it on the second computer?
I have thought of backing up all of the files on computer 1 and copying onto computer 2, so that the "new" file info will overwrite the "old" file info. But, will I get charged again against my limit of 10??
If there is already a string on this, please let me know.
    Thanks!
    Dell Inspiron   Windows XP

If you have the exact same songs on both PCs, and there both networked together on a home network, you may want to look into the share feature in iTunes, especailly if this is a desktop and laptop setup. this way you could keep all the songs on one PC with its ratings and all, and then access them on the other PC over the network

  • How to manage two itunes on two computers and two iPhones

I have a single NAS data server that stores all my music and content.
I have a laptop, and an iPhone and apple account. So does my wife.
What is the best strategy for keeping the music in sync across those devices without keeping it local?
Currently it is very troublesome to keep playlists in sync between the two itunes applications. It is also difficult to keep the music up to date on the two computers, even though they are pointing to the same NAS directory/share.

If you are syncing Contacts, Notes and Reminders, no. That is an account (AppleID) specific function. Backups, however, are another matter and would remain separate since they are device specific.

  • ITunes on two computers -- issues?

I am looking to simply do one thing: Be able to play the music that is on my iPhone on my work computer.
I don't want to complicate my iPhone and how I need to sync in the future -- is there an issue with having the iPhone sync to my work computer AND my home computer?
I would like to carry the 'plays' I get from my work computer back to my home computer as well if possible.

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers

Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync, otherwise iTunes will want to erase the content and reload. Manual management isn't an option with an iPhone since it still wants you to use a single library, and that won't sync plays.
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed slightly but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box. However you lose the other benefits of syncing.

  • ITunes and two computers - windows

I recenlty switched to an iPhone when my Droid died.  Love it.  But, I added my music from home computer to my iPhone.  I added iTunes to my work laptop.  When I connect to the work laptop, it deletes all my music on my iPhone that I sync from home.   The work laptop only has "purchased" music, not all of my backed up CDs.  How do I change the settings on my account so it doesn't do that?

  • Using itunes on two computers??

i have most of my music on one computer thats not a lap top and i had some of my music on my other computer... well i opened itunes tonight and evidently it was all lost so is there a way to connect the two computers together through itunes or something rather then sending music by email because that takes a long time.

is there a way to connect the two computers together
You mean like say a computer network? Yes but this is not really the appropriate forum to get help with that. If you do not have a hub/router and need to plug the two into each other you will need a cross over network cable. Once they are connected there is any number of ways to move the files. Setting up file sharing is probably the easiest.
You could also just burn the songs to DVD, if they will fit and move them that way.

  • Sync itunes between two computers

Hey all, I have had a laptop for a while with my itunes library on it. I recently bought a small desktop to keep connected to my home theatre, as it's a pain to keep connecting my laptop all the time, especially when I take my laptop with me everywhere.
Here's what I would like to accomplish: I want all my music on my laptop to also be on the desktop, and I would like an easy way to sync the two when I add new music to my laptop. I would highly prefer to be able to keep the play count, starts, etc synced as well.
Now, I know I can just copy the Music folder from one computer to the other, but this won't sync anything after that, unless I do it every time I add new music. I have googled and found the Home Share feature, which also allows you to import music from one computer to another. But my question is, when I add new music, will this sync automatically? Or will I have to manually import again? And if I do have to manually import again, will it have to import everything? Or will it just transfer the new files? I don't want to bog down my home network every time I want to sync.
I should also say, I would like to stay away from any external programs if possible. Unless there is one that makes this extremely easier.
And also, I do not have an ipod/iphone. I have read that's the easiest way to do this, but I don't have any of those.
Running Windows 7 on both computers.

See the user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy. It does suggest a free additional tool, and it isn't automatic, but it is fast compared to manually copying the entire library from one machine to another. It would also give you the opportunity to spot if something goes missing which a completely automatic system might not.
