I'm having the same incredibly frustrating problem. I have 50-60 GBs of music and now literally ALL OF A SUDDEN most of my mp3s won't play in iTunes. Of the songs that do play, many of them sound garbled (almost as if you were listening to them underwater). As others have noted, the songs do in fact play properly in other media players (VLC, MPC, WMP, etc).
I feel like I've tried just about everything but I can't seem to fix the problem. Nor have I been able to find any viable solutions after hours of scouring the internet. Here is a list of the steps I've taken so far, in chronological order:
1. Closed/re-opened iTunes
2. Re-booted computer
3. Uninstalled/re-installed iTunes
4. Tried deleting songs from iTunes library and then re-adding them, but after dropping files into the library they don't show up at all, iTunes refuses to import them
5. Downgraded from iTunes 8 to iTunes 7
None of these things have helped at all and I am amazed that even after completely uninstalling iTunes 8 and then installing version 7 I'm still experiencing the same problem. And, on top of things, I've found that iTunes 7 is not recognizing the ID3 tags for many of the songs it does import.
My apologies for the length of this post. I just want to be specific and provide as much info as I can so that maybe we can find a solution to this thing.

    If all you want is your old photos, you could backup your new phone using iTunes, then restore it from your iCloud backup, import the old photos to your computer, then restore it from the backup your made in iTunes returning your newer data to your phone.  If you want your old photos on your phone, sync them there from your computer using iTunes.  The process would look like this:
    Connect your phone to your computer, when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Transfer Purchases; right-click again and select Backup.
    Disconnect from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to return it to new
    Go through the activation setup, choosing to Restore from iCloud backup.  Make sure your phone is plugged into a charger and has access to wi-fi as this can take hours to complete.
    When complete, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences.  On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
    Now import the old photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
    When done, open iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose the backup you made in step 1.
    Go to the Photos tab and select the photos you want to sync to your phone and sync.

    I had some time finally figuring why I could buy and download from the Itunes store, but could not load it on my IPOD. What finally worked was plugging my IPOD in to the computer, as I would when "syncing", and, after loading, it would show my device in the side bar. You have to go to VIEW in the top Tool Bar and click on SHOW SIDE BAR in the drop down menu. "SUMMARY' tab, on top, is what I clicked on to show an option of restoring my IPOD to the factory defaults. It erases everything on the IPOD, but gives an option of AUTOFILL afterwards, which it does from the computer. This is one solution of many you could try. Good luck.

    when u do a restore it deletes off everything on the device, including software. then it reinstalls the software from a new download package. this will ensure ur device isnt getting the same glitch in its system that ur current software has if that is the issue. when u restore from the backup u made AFTER uve done the 'restore ipad' that will put all of ur stuff back onto the ipad. i would suggest deleting off the youtube app b4 doing the back up and then readding it after the restore and restore from back up phases. if all of that doesnt work, youtube is the one with the problem and u should contact them.

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

    Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

    I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
    I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
    Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
    When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
    If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
    Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
    It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
    I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.

    I'm experiencing very odd behaviour with my MacBook.
    System hangs suddenly. I can't switch to any programs, but music keeps on playing and mouse cursor moving. It stays like this forever unless I force laptop to shutdown (by pressing the power button over 5 secs).
    Few things that I've noticed when system crashed:
    - I had a lot of programs running (Photoshop, Firefox, lots of small apps)
    - I used Expose or alt-tab
    - iTunes is playing music
    Can anyone recommend some tests or tricks that I could run before sending it to the Apple service?

    You might be right about having less apps to consume RAM. I've upgraded my RAM to 2GB because I knew this would be on issue.
    Maybe I just have to start looking for better performance. Something that can house more RAM. 2xQuad Core Mac Pro for example

    I just purchased a new iphone 5s and music would not play on it with headphones plugged in.  They replaced the phone for me but it continued to do this.  So I restored the phone and tried to play music on youtube before I restored all my settings and apps....Any suggestions on common apps that may cause this?

    We have tried 3 different brands of headphones, including the apple set and auxiliary audio cord.
    Also, music works fine before I load all my apps, hence why I ask if anyone knows about any kind of certain apps causing this.

    For some odd reason when I turn music on all I get is five little dots, and they don't even fill up or empty as I turn the wheel.

  • Itunes is all messed up and music won't play

    A few days ago I was able to play all 997 of my songs on itunes. Today, I go to play my songs and there is an sign in front of all but about 3 songs and none of the others will play. When I click on the explanation sign I get the following "this song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" When I try to locate, nothing happens. I have invested a lot of time getting my music synced to itunes and really just want to get them back so I can listen to them as my background music when I work on the computer.     You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
    The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
    The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
    The song file has been deleted
    The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
    So did you move or change anything? iTunes does not do folder watching and it cannot cope with files being moved or renamed.
    You can find where iTunes thinks a track is by right clicking on it and selecting Get Info>>Summary Tab.
    Does this reveal anything about what happened. If you can find the file with Windows Explorer you can see where the file really is.
    If you didn't change anything, do you have any software on your PC that might be renaming files, Window Media player can be set to do it.

  • How do I get a song to play when it requests authorization, I authorize it, then iTunes acknowledges it was already authorized and still won't play?

    I have gone through several different troubleshoots and still the problem remains. Inside the "get info" tab on the song it says that it was authorized by my account. The song is part of an album where I purchased the entire album. Out of the 14 songs I purchased on the album, 2 bring up the following screen when clicked on to play:
    This computer is not authorized to play "You Reign Alone". Would you like to authorize it?
    To play this song you must authorize this computer to play songs using this account. You may authorize up to 5 computers for each account.
    So I input the Apple ID and password for the account and it gives me the following screen:
    This computer is already authorized.
    Including this one, you have authorized 3 computers out of your available 5.
    But nothing has changed. I still can't play the song. As I said above, I checked the Get Info tab on the song and it showed the account I had logged in for authorization. Is there something I can do to get iTunes to play the songs I purchased?
    (Side question: does anyone know how to email iTunes support. They say on the website that it can be done, but 45 minutes of frustrated screen hopping landed me nowhere but the same FAQs and Express lane call in support options. I just wanted a simple email option.)

  • Videos and Music won't play

    Hey. I got my video iPod really recently at christmas, and everything's worked fine till now. I had my iPod plugged into my computer overnight to charge. This morning, I got up, turned off my computer, and unplugged my ipod.
    Now, only some of my music plays. For instance, I might select a song and it plays fine. BUt sometimes, I'll select a song, and it'll switch to the "now playing" page like normal. displaying the name, time remainging, album art, etc. But only for a second. Then it'll skip ahead a few songs to the next one that plays normally.
    Also, whenever I click on ANY of my videos (music videos, tv shows, movies, etc.) it just goes to a black screen and freezes for about thirty seconds (none of the buttons work) and then goes back to the menu I selected the video on.
    The weirdest part is that I can connect my iPod to my computer and watch all of my vids and listen to ALL of my songs FROM THE IPOD, not the computer, and it works.
    Please tell me what to do about this weird problem.

    It sounds like you need to restore your iPod and re-sync your content to it.

    There is an issue with the latest iTunes version that is causing downloaded movies/songs from not playing on your computer, but should work on your iPod. Until Apple releases an update that'll fix this, this problem will probably not go away.

  • After I installed the windows 8.1 update, podcasts and music won't play

    After I installed the windows 8.1  update, itunes stopped playing. When I try to play, it brings up the  song but stays at 0:00. My subscribed podcasts still download but they  all stay at 0:00 too. I can click on a later point in the song/podcast  and it moves to that point but just stays there as if it is paused but  indicating it is playing in the controls.

    I have 4 pcs authorized. 1 for each of my family members when I visit. I had recently purchased several movies from the iTunes store before leaving florida, now here in Maryland. I decided to purchsed more. when I attempt to upload from the itunes library to my ipod movies, it gives me a window error explaining:
    "This ipod is currently linked to another iTunes library. In order to copy the movie Goonies to this ipod, you must link this ipod with this iTunes library. Doing so will remove 5 movies including Trading Places from this iPod."
    Well, this is unaccectable since all my other movies, including the 5 it wishes to remove are on my home PC in florida. All the movies were purchased from iTunes yet only my recent purchases show up in the library folder - which makes no sense unless it auto deletes itself after a period of time?
    I have copied the movies from the library folder to this pc just in case but I cannot find a way to copy or backup my ipod to my PC just in case itunes wipes my movies.
    Any help or ideas?
