ITunes slow

I know this is a big topic for discussion, and have reviewed hundreds of posts with solutions ranging from apple/microsoft conspiracy theories to programmer incompetence. The bottom line is I have iTunes running on a dell desktop with XP-Pros SP3 with no problems - but on my dell Latitude laptop with the same software applications (including AV and anti-spyware apps), iTunes is unbearably slow - literally taking anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 min to perform any action. It does not seem to bog the computer down as I can surf the web and use other applications with no hit in performance, and task manager shows no abnormal processor usage.
I have set all my AV and spyware programs to not scan when opening files, and have even uninstalled these programs with no change in iTunes' performance issues. Thorough scans by AVG, Trend Micro, Trojan Hunter, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and Avast have all come up clean (and no, I do not have all these programs at installed and running the same time).
I ran sysinternals Filemon and noticed that a couple processes seemed to interject themselves after I perform some action within iTunes:
svchost.exe c:\Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\Client\Inf\DellOMCl.inf
lap.exe c:\Windows\System32\Dellsys.dll
svchost.exe c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Provisioning\store.xml
I also noticed that if I minimize a window that ovelapped the iTunes window, the overlapped portion remains displayed in the iTunes window for quite a while. Even repositioning the iTunes window is slow (again not so with other programs or windows)
I feel confident I have ruled out interference from malware, and anti-virus/malware programs. I have disabled most of the features within iTunes itself, and tried various updates of my video driver - I am at a loss
and very frustrated because I am forced to use iTunes to synch my calendar and music on my iPhone.
Does anyone have any new suggestions or ideas to try

Kaspersky is reputed to make computers slower but I doubt this might be the reason.
You can try another excellent Anti-virus called Antivir http://www.free-av.com or an alternative to iTunes http://ipodmanagers.blogspot.com

    Try this,
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

I tried to copy & paste to show the advice I found because the post would not allow me to reply. Tha'ts why it looks wierd.

  • Why is Movies from iTunes slow but not from Netflix, Why is Movies from iTunes slow but not from Netflix

Why downloading movies from itunes slower than movies than netflix.

Yes, I had read about converting too..but...isn't it true that then you have TWO files of the same song...consequently twice as much space is taken up for the same song (one in the AAC format and one in the mp3 format)?  It just seems to me that this adds unneccessary time (to make the conversion) and wasted space (2 files now instead of one).  I guess to each their own, but it sure seems preferable to me to purchase right off the bat an mp3 file which does not need any conversion.  And, isn't it also true that in the default Apple format, maybe it isn't "protected" per se...but I was certain I read that you could only use the file on 5 computers for personal use only...there certainly aren't any restrictions like that on mp3.  I was only asking because I have accumulated funds in my itunes account and since I have many apps, I was just wondering if someone could convince me why I would want to purchase music from iTunes.  Thank You.

  • Itunes slows down when sharing music is enabled

    hi,
i searched through the forums and i didn't see that exact issue so i decided to post it.
as soon as i share my library itunes completely slows down.
    - starting to play songs takes 5 seconds and displays the rotating rainbow circle
    - rating songs takes 5 seconds also and displays the rotating rainbow circle
    - resuming play after pausing also
there are two more interesting issues:
    - i have a few albums where it doesn't happen! the albums aren't encoded different, have the same version of tags, are on the same drive in an adjacent folder. i tried reimporting songs, placing it into different folders or harddrives. no changes.
    - only 2% of my library is shared and it seems like most of it is recently added music. but: no differences in encoding, tags, place on the harddrive. renaming, readding, moving the files didn't change the situation.
i also disabled automatic updating of playlists, deleted all my playlist folders, reinstalled itunes, tried basically everything.
what does itunes do in the network when playing, rating songs, ...? i'm using a fast wlan, but i don't think that's the issue or does itunes reexport the xml-file after every play? has it something to do with auto-update-play-counts after every song (which i couldn' find in the preferences)?
any help would be greatly appreciated!
    regards,
    eric.
by the way: i'd loooooove to see pandora-like functionality in the next major versin of itunes!!! :)))

When you are sharing your iTunes, any other users you share with are accessing your hard drive and music foilder simultaneously with you. Since shared users are not playing exactly the same song at the same time as you, your hard drive's heads are scanning and reading from more points than they would be with you alone listening. There is a need to cache some part of the files for sharing, and that uses a bit of your RAM too. I guess it would be similar to saying that your car drives fine as long as you are driving it alone. Pile a few friends in with you, tow their cars behind yours, and suddenly, your car has nowhere near the performance it did with just you in it. Aside from adding more RAM, buying a fatser hard drive or stepping up your processor, this is simply an issue with sharing one system between more than one user at the same time, and it can't be remedied.

  • Fix? iTunes slow to import CD, sync iPod, freezes on credits - Page Faults

    All,
Using Windows XP on a computer with 512 M of memory (lightning fast for it's time) I found that iTunes would import CDs at 0.3x to 0.7x, way too slow. iTunes resonded slugglishly to UI commands. And the credits screen (help - about iTunes) would freeze. Other applications do not have this problem. I found that iTunes memory management is sub optimal, at best. This causes iTunes to swap portions of its active program memory to the hard disk, slowing the interface by a factor of x1000.
How to verify if this is happening:
    1. Open task manager by RIGHT clicking on the date on the windows control bar
    2. Click on the "Process" tab, then from the menu select "View" then "Select columns . . "
    3. Make sure "CPU", ("handles" (i.e. open files), "threads" (i.e. parallel processes), and "page faults" are checked. Page faults are swap of memory to the hard disk.
    4. Open iTunes, use as usual (e.g. view credits)
    5. If iTunes becomes slow (right away in my case), watch for increasing page faults (what I experience) or excessive threads or handles.
In my case I'm getting over 1000 page hits a second when viewing credits. Someone didn't use good programming skills. (Not necessarily Apple, see below)
Note: I see, and expect, the CPU to go to 100% while importing CDs.
Please note: ** I do not use a mail client on this machine. ** I use a web based mail program and do not use MS outlook, and I don't want to. I only mention this because when I used iTunes, it locked up and I also received an error saying that I needed to setup my outlook client. Turning off automatic updates seems to have solved this lockup.
Since I run Word, excel, iExlorer, games, and windows media manager without error I'm having trouble understanding why iTunes uses so much system resources. Poor development tools? Virtual machine? Bug in complier library?
    Thigs to try to fix:
Since this is a memory issue: Try one or more of the following:
Minimize the screen when importing CD (screen calls are a hog)
This is what made the most improvement for me.
    Stop all other programs
This allowed me to stop the credits screen.
Try stopping / halting your antivirus programs
Try updating your Video card driver.
Note: I have a 'business' style video card. Aboslutly no bells/whistles. I do not wish to upgrade to a directX card just to allow easy transfers to my iPod / iTouch. I am using an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller with drivers provided by Wicrosoft.
Set your performance for best performance:
+ Right click on the "My Computer" icon
+ Click on "advanced" - "Performance" - Visual
+ Click on "adjust for best performace"
Note: This changes the XP look, had no effect for me.
If you are still having trouble, close iTunes, open the Windows Media player to import your CD with the following settings: Tools - Options
Player - Deselect start player in media guide (unless you really like it)
Copy Music - Deselect Copy Protect Music (otherwise it only works in WMP)
    Root cause?
I suspect that the iTunes is calling a function that it expects the video card to do easily. I suspect that the video card doesn't have that functionality, so the video card driver tries to emulate the functionality. The slow response from the driver apparently causes iTunes to go haywire.
    If you read this far:
Please let me know if you found this helpful by writing a response.
If you can think of anything (other than buying a new computer) that would allow this applicaiton to work, let me know. BTW: A real old version of quicktime works just fine on my 486!
    Apple developers:
I would be open for a test bed if you need older HW to qualify on.
Any idea why the credits would cause the page faults?
Any way to use a bare bones video library (e.g. no scrolled fades etc.)?
For an application that essentially copies files to my iPod, it sure uses a lot of resources.

    Welcome to AD!
This is a user chat board - Apple developers won't be seeing your post. You could re-send it using
itunes menu > Help > Provide iTunes Feedback
    Hoewever, don't expect a reply.
the iTunes 8.1 system requirements page states
    +A DirectX 9.0-compatible video card with 32MB of video RAM; 64MB recommended+
It's not that surprising that itunes doesn't act right on your PC.

  • ITunes Slow Writing ID3 Tags From External Drive

When adding files (music) located on my WD External Hardrive, and upon trying to add the album art, the process slows down... a lot. As opposed to when I add filed on my internal hardrive (from my laptop directly), which is a lot faster (seconds whereas from the External takes about 2-3 minutes per album of 12-16 songs)
It takes FOREVER to write these ID3 tags. Is there a way to speed this up? What gives?

Sorry, where is the file iTunes Library.itl? If you're not certain and don't know how to find out use this script: iTunesXMLPath
External drives take longer to process file operations than internal drives. Every operation in iTunes causes the database to be updated so if this is on a sluggish drive you will notice.
May help to exclude the library & media folders from any anti-virus scans. iTunes also slows up as you increase the number of playlists and the size of the library.
Are you certain your computer is running USB 2.0? What happens if you power down the computer and remove all USB devices except keyboard, mouse and external drive? (Of course this might be your usual config.) Is iTunes any faster? Are you connected to the front USB ports or the rear? The drive should not be connected through an external USB hub.

  • ITunes slow once iPod is connected to computer

I just got an 80g video iPod for Christmas. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and transferred all of the music from my library into iTunes. No problem. I connected my iPod, and it synced. Also no problem.
However, once the machines synced, iTunes became incredibly slow. When my iPod is not connected, iTunes works fine. But as soon as the iPod is connected, it operates horribly. Even when I try to "safely disconnect my iPod," iTunes does not respond. I have reset my iPod, restarted my computer, reinstalled iTunes, etc. What can I do to make iTunes function appropriately?

    so does mine

  • Itunes slow switching tracks on mp3 but not on m4a files?

Itunes is slow (1 minute) switching tracks on mp3 files but not on m4a files. I can't figure out why. My music files are on a network (NAS) drive. When I change tracks between m4a files, I get quick changes between songs (couple seconds). When I change songs on mp3 files, I notice the network spikes usually in 3-4 spikes over about a minute, and then the song starts. Itunes is hanging during that time. If I start a file from the local machine desktop, I see the same spikes. The computer was freshly reinstalled this week, so new itunes install. Also tried reinstalling. I have a second computer on the same network that I tried to duplicate the problem, and that computer works fine on mp3 and m4a song changes. Uses same version of Itunes 10.  Both machines are XP service pack three and a good amout of RAM and run fine with all other programs, so no virus, etc.

I am having the exact same problem.  It's maddening.  It's happening to all of my computers (all Windows 7) and my Apple TV (using Library sharing).  My whole iTunes library is stored on a Buffalo terastation NAS drive.  It's been this way for years and I've never had a problem.  Until you mentioned it, I never noticed that is was an MP3 vs AAC thing.

  • Why is iTunes slow on start-up? ...color pinwheel forever...

I am also using Tune-up software. Both applications start-up together.  At first, it was only Tune-up that was slow starting up. Now, both iTunes and Tune-up take a significant amount of time before I can use either of the apps. I see the color pinwheel for up to five-minutes. Is Tune-up the culprit?

  • Itunes slow and sputtering  --  frequent issue with many

well so much for an update. after updating to latest itunes, 7.0.2.16, my songs and movies skip and run slow.
i have tried all the fixes: new sound card driver, delete quicktime and reinstall, sound enhancer conflict, no plug ins, hardware excelleration...
i cannot listen to my music, and its all locked in the skin of the apple. dang.
help me apple, please help me, and the others - or how about admitting there is a problem so i can quit tweeking the @#$% out of my computer.
PS: i do not have a pavillion laptop or a dell desktop, like so many with this problem seem to have.
    respectfully.
amd - fast-2005   Windows XP Pro   1 gb ram

You can try one more thing. It's a bit of a hack, but it's worked for many, many people.
    Find and install Foobar 2000.
Then find and install the "multi-plugin for iTunes" and install it.
Open up Foobar and set it to use KERNAL streaming. Close Foobar. and give it a go.
That's the only other suggestion I can think of that you haven't already tried.
iTunes skin with Foobar sound engine = good to go.
iTunes for windows needs a major overhaul. It's laggy, too limited in the codecs that can be used, and has no kernal streaming. (sigh)
They really need to do something fast.

  • Syncing with iTunes slow again, after installing iTunes 8.1.0.52

Hi. I once experienced really slow backups (during Syncing), which I think was fixed by updating my iPhone 3G's firmware. I have not had a slow backup for a long time.
I now have the lastest firmware version (2.2.1, just checked for updates through iTunes), and I recently upgraded iTunes to the latest version, 8.1.0.52.
Since upgrading iTunes to 8.1.0.52, the backup suddenly started taking a very long time again (over 30 minutes), and sometimes it seems like it will never end so I cancel it.
I tried doing "Run Diagnostics..." in iTunes, and it ran through reasonably quickly, and then reported that everything was OK, which it isn't.
Is this a known issue with 2.2.1 and 8.1.0.52?
Or, is there some way that I can "debug" what is making my backup take so long?

same thing here after updating iTunes. 5(!) hours....

  • Streaming iTunes slowing internet browsing?

I'm using an iMac (10.4) and have both Airport & Extreme - I work wirelessly and print wirelessly. I stream my iTunes to my stereo also.
Recently I've noticed that internet browsing is taking forever, it seems to be more when I'm using iTunes over the stereo - not over the built in speakers.
It gets to the point where I have to go through network diagnostics & follow that through before it 'finds' the internet again.
For the record I also have a PC which works wirelessly at the same time & is completely fine.
To say it's irritating is putting it mildly.
Any ideas? I presume the PC isn't slowing things down. Also, sometimes I lose the wireless stereo connection & have to close iTunes & restart it.

Connect your HiFi to an Apple AirPort Express base station that is set up as part of your wireless network. You can then play music from iTunes to the HiFi. Without knowing more about your HiFi it is hard to say more. See [Apple's web page|http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/airtunes.html] on the subject.
    Best of luck.

  • Why is iTunes slow to transfer files to File Sharing

The latest releases of Apple iTunes on Windows 11.1.4.62 and iTunes on Mac 11.1.4 (62) 64-bit is taking a few minutes per (200kb) file to transfer data via File Sharing into an application. This is a significant and very noticeable change in performance over the previous release -- certainly used be near instantaneous transfer. File deletion is also extremely slow. This is common across all Apps that support File Sharing including Adobe Reader, Quick Office, Google Earth, etc.
    I'm using iPad2 (MC979B/A), iOS7.0.4(11B554a).
    Is this is a bug?
Thanks in advance for any information.

    Hey there jbrensinger,
It sounds like the attachment window in the Mail app is taking longer than normal to load. I recommend first performing a Safe Boot, then re testing the issue:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
If the issue persists, I would next reindex spotlight with the following article:
Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
