ITunes won't open after 6.0 update

After I did the update for iTunes, I tried to open iTunes and a window popped open about terms of use but then closed almost immediately, then iTunes never opened.
How can I fix this problem?

I am having the same problem - I upgraded to iTunes 6.0 and now I cannot open iTunes or Quicktime. Any ideas?

iTunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?  And by the way, this is apparently a common problem and Apple has completely failed to warn in advance or offer a quick straightforward solution - used to be a good company, but it's becoming just another crappy screw-the-consumer corporation.

It would help to know versions here.  I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed.  Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago.  If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses.  Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

  • Itunes won't open after downloading last update. Error message says "not supported by this type of Mac"

Downloaded latest iTunes update. Now iTunes won't open, and the error message says "You can't open the application iTunes because it is not supported on this type of Mac." I have been using this MAc since 2008. Any suggestions appreciated.

  • ITunes won't open after latest OSX update

AFter latest OSX update iTunes won't open.  Reinstalled iTunes.  Reinstalled OSX update.  When I click on icon in applications or in finder nothing happens.

This is what worked for me and others--original post found on this thread: Yosemite slow opening and cannot open itunes

According to multiple reports on this site, Apple Support has given the following instructions to others who had a similar problem. I can't confirm that this procedure works or that it's necessary, but it won't leave you any worse off than you are now.
    First, back up all data.
Select the iTunes icon in the Applications folder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner to unlock the settings.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, change the Privilege setting for each Name in the list to Read & Write. Close the window. If the settings aren't visible, click the disclosure triangle on the left so that it points down.
You should now be able to drag the iTunes application to the Trash and empty. Your iTunes data won't be affected.
Click the iTunes link at the top of this page, download the installer package and run it.
If iTunes still doesn't launch, or if you can't complete the procedure, reinstall the OS.

  • ITunes won't open after trying to update

I updated my iPhone 5C to IOS8  yesterday, and when I plugged it into my computer it said I needed to update my iTunes. When I tried to update it, it wouldn't work and told me to do it manually. It then came up with the screen that searches for updates, and I pressed cancel so that I could press the tools button. When I pressed tools, I could not click on the top option that I was supposed to select. I closed the tab and now iTunes won't open.

  • Itunes won't open after Installing 9 update

I installed the Itunes 9 upgrade. It downloaded fine. Then when it was done, I clicked on Itunes on my dock to open it but it just bounced like it was going to open but then stops and nothing opens. Is this happening for anyone else? Any suggestions on what to do...

The same thing happened to me where the icon "bounces," but iTunes won't open.
So apparently I don't have the right version of OSX for the program. OK. So what to do I to get back my old iTunes?
I'm a little ****** about this because I feel like a warning should have popped up somewhere during the installation process telling me my system wouldn't accommodate the new iTunes.
Secondly, I'm ****** off at myself because all of this trouble was caused by trying to download an episode of freakin' "Top Chef." Why on earth would the show require the newest version of iTunes?

  • ITunes won't open after 7.6 update

I don't remember when software update ran, but since then I can't open iTunes on my Mac (Powerbook G4, OS 10.4.11). It bounces once in the dock and that's it. Same thing if I run it from the apps folder. I've tried a few things already:
    1) Run diskwarrior. Found some problems, said it fixed it.
    2) Tried opening iTunes from a different account. Same thing.
    3) Deleted (dragged to trash) the iTunes app and shortcut. I know there's more files out there, but not sure what they might be.
    4) Repaired permissions.
So that's where I am. iTunes still won't open and my job ***** without being able to drown out the rest of the world with headphones! Any help will be appreciated.

I don't pay any attention to updates, but last week my entire itunes library vaporized. I used my back-up disks to get my stuff back, but all the playlists are empty and itunes is crashing constantly. Just trying to click on another song or playlist causes it to "spin" and I end up force quitting. Oddly enough if I use my remote control it works better than from the desktop.
I'm really disappointed with this whole thing, as I had never had problems with my macs like this. And someone mentioned antivirus software. Should I have that on my macs???

  • My itunes won't open after most recent update

I dont know what to do!  I have tried restarting nd reinstaling itunes but it still wont open

I have the same issue.  Yesterday I allowed Window 7 64 bit to download a couple of updates and and service pack for Office 2010.  I have a new iPad 2 which I had not synced yet (we have multiple user accts set up on system and sync 2 iphone 4s and an Ipad 1st gen with no issue prior to this).  I opened iTunes and it indicated new version 10.4 was available so I updated it also.  After these updates my system became mush.  After attempting to start iTunes, the itunes.exe process loads but it sits there and hogs up memory and CPU.  I can come back to computer 10 min later and maybe it eventually opens but is very slow and eventually hangs up.  I then have issues on trying to kill the iTunes process in task manager.  Haven't even gotten close to syncing the new iPad 2.  I checked firewall settings, other services, tried running in other compatibility modes, and then checked on this forum for detailed instructions on the best way to uninstall all of the apple programs in specific order and then reinstall.  Nothing works.  So basically I have an $829 apple tablet that is 50% useless becasue I can't even sync it with my music, movies, and books.
I have attempted to go back to version 10.3 with no luck either.  I am close to just returning my iPad 2.  My next attempt will be to do a system restore prior to the Windows 7 updates that I installed and then try installing iTunes 10.4 first before the windows updates to see if there is some connection.  I have read many posts on here where apparently many people are having issues with v10.4, especially on Win 7 64 bit systems, but it seems that Apple really hasn't addressed anything with this.  I would just like to get it working and sync the new iPad.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

  • ITunes won't open after a recent update

Recently I updated iTunes to 7.2. After the download was complete i tried to open iTunes and it said that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. I tried restarting the computer, but the same thing kept on coming up. I went back to the apple site and repaired iTunes, but it still doesn't work. It has been 3 days and iTunes still does not come up. Any ideas?

Apple has just released a new version that is supposed to fix this issue:

  • ITunes won't open after hard drive update

I recently updated my Macbook hard drive to a new SSD drive. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and bought an enclosure to use my previous drive as an external drive. Before launching iTunes on my Macbook I plugged in old drive and launched iTunes there.
Now when I try to launch iTunes on my Macbook the icon bounces but does not launch. Plugging in my iPhone does not launch iTunes either.
    Any ideas?

  • ITunes won't open after OS update to Yosmite

ITunes won't open after OS update, ITunes has been updated, it won't open or bounce. It will not allow me to move it to trash or reinstall it. I have already updated to OS X Yosmite two times as directed by apple, I have rebooted in safe made as well as Command/Option/P/R before start up. I have opened console/system log to see if there is anything going on but when I click on Itunes nothing happens, not even so much as half a line of script. I'm stumped. If I wanted someone to tell me to turn it off and on again I'd just watch IT Crowd. please help

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
If you head into your applications folder and locate iTunes. Right click iTunes and show package contents. In there there will be a contents folder --> MacOS --> double click on the iTunes terminal icon. This should force iTunes to open via a terminal window and at the very least it will tell you what it is getting stuck on.

  • ITunes won't open after update; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5

iTunes won't open after update - help, please; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5.

i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did.
    step one-
Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes
(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.)
    step two-
download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here
(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).
although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions from http://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/
    step 3-
    open Terminal
    step 4-
enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
    step 5-
drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock.
    step 6-
install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works.
    step 7-
go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time.
with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life.
