ITunes won't open after upgrading to 8.1.1

I just installed iTunes 8.1.1 and now iTunes will not open on my computer. When I try to open it, it opens for about half a second then disappears, giving me the message that "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried restarting the computer, defragmenting, and reporting the error, but nothing is having any impact. What should I do?
I have a Dell with Windows XP and have had iTunes for a few years with no problems.

Try
1. Totally remove iTunes and QuickTime
see
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
2. then you will need to do a "deep clean" of registry
by this I mean a registry search for itunes and delete any and every key you find
*however if you do not know how to do this safely don't try it*
unfortunately the registry cleaners do not clean to this level
and itunes leaves considerable detritus in the registry which can screw up updates and or reinstalls
Apple needs a cleaner similar to Norton's effort which has similar problems. Their tool removes ALL evidence of a previous anti virus installation which is what the above solution achieves in iTunes

My girlfriend's iPad mini is disabled, so I'm trying to connect it to her old macbook (10.6.8), the one which it is associated with.  Upon plugging in the iPad, I was prompted to update iTunes, because the iPad is running iOS 7 and needs the latest version of iTunes.  I said ok, and iTunes upgraded to 11.
Now, iTunes will not start.  When i click on the icon, it bounces once and then nothing else happens.  I've tried restarting, creating new accounts, and deleting all the com.apple.itunes preference files, but it's not working.  What the ****?  I can't undisable the iPad because iTunes won't start.  How do I fix this?

After updating to OSX 10.9.3, my iTunes won't open. If I try to drag it to trash, I get the message "iTunes can't be modified or deleted because it is required by OS X".

okay. it's way rarer to get this sort of thing due to NIS 2006 than it is with 2005, but it has been known to happen.
try the technique from the following bbecker post. (heads-up ... it's taking a long time for that post in that thread to load for properly for some folks. so leave it to think for a few minutes until it's loaded fully, otherwise you might not see the correct post.)

  • Itunes won't open after upgrade/no error message

I had an older version of ITunes that was working fine until I wanted to buy music that required an upgrade to 7.and the download seemed to go fine but after the installation,I was unable to launch/open the program or access my library.I've removed it once and reinstalled and still nothing.I'm totally frustrated.I've checked firewalls and everything else I can think of and wish now that I just had my old copy of Itunes back so I could at least copy CD's onto my IPOD. When I click on the Itunes icon, nothing happens. I've never gotten any type of error message. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Jason,I used the troubleshooting link you gave and so far have 1.Fixed Digital Signing for Windows drivers.(didn't help) 2.Removing Itunes configuration files.
In this one I was told to delete the SC info.sidb file (I didn't have one of these when I got to the folder where it was supposed to be)The thing I haven't done is the mscofig.instruction. I was saving it for last as it sounded like it could really make a lot of changes to my computer. The Itunes installation icon is still on my desktop so I clicked on it and there was a link that said it would repair missing or damaged files in the Itunes software. It didn't help either. I can click on Itunes all day long and it won't open.I can't access the library either. I am going to do the last step you suggested and uninstall my security software and see if that helps. I appreciate all the help Jason.

  • Itunes won't open after upgrade

i upgraded to the latest itunes yesterday morning and now itunes will not open. i can get quicktime to open. i have tried everything it says on the itunes website, i have turned off NAV and still it will not launch...grrrr. what can i do?

The 208 error is from the authorization file being corrupt. Make sure you are set up to view hidden files.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=816513
After having checked my other computer for what files had been altered or created this last day (during thich i had successfully authorized it for playback in preview and for purchased music) i found the file "SC Info.sidb" under "X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info". This appears to hold your authorization keys or some other magic stuff. By deleting this files parent folder, iTunes was forced into asking me to authorize this computer again for playback, with the difference this time that there were some other options on the authorization dialog, just like there should be when for the first time authorizing a computer to play protected iTunes content. When I then entered my information as always and was expecting to see the same -208 error, i was instead greeted with sweet opera that I had been longing to listen to.
P.S. It's voilà, not walla (giggling)

  • ITunes won't open after upgrading to OSX Mavericks

I've just upgraded to Mavericks on my Macbook Pro and after completing the installation iTunes 11.1.2 will not open any more. When I try to open iTunes the software name shows in the upper right corner as normal, but a blank box with an "ok" button pops up (See attached screenshot). When ok is clicked it shuts down anything iTunes related. This happens even if you click on a song to play. If you click on the song description window play icon the song plays, but still no iTunes.
I've tried deleting iTunes, but but get another popup stating iTunes is a OSX requirement. I'm now in the process of downloading iTunes to see if it'll install and possibly "repair" and will update if that solves the problem.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

The option key... I've been holding down the command key... No wonder that didn't work. I should really be writing this stuff down!.
Regardless, Downloading and reinstalling iTunes did the trick.
Thank you mende1 & saffron63 for the assist!

  • Itunes won't open after upgrade to 10.6.8

I recently backed up my Macbook using Time Machine. I took the Macbook to Apple to wipe the hard drive and install OS X 10.6.8
When I got home, I used Time Machine to bring my files and settings back onto the Macbook. I then tried to open iTunes, and now get the following message:
"The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?"
I try to download iTunes, but it gets stuck right at the end of downloading. I have to then quit the download.
    Any suggestions?

Today i installed Snow Leopard.  iChat was working.  Installed updates and now iChat is not working.  Same error as listed above.  Any ideas?

  • TS1776 ITunes won't open after upgrade.  Any ideas?

Anyone having trouble with the new itunes download?  I did everything on this site and I still can't get it to open. I'm still having problems getting ITunes to open.  I have purchased an IPad and the music has converted over to the IPad but I can not get it to open on my laptop.

    Hi, Stephpruitt.
There are a couple of things you can try.  The first would be to reset all settings.  Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings.
If the issue persists, try signing out of all services that require signing into your Apple ID and then signing back in.

  • ITunes Won't Open After Upgrading

I have tried everything mentioned in the other threads but nothing seems to work for me. Everytime I open itunes it would show the hour glass then the hour glass would just go away and nothing happens, when i check my task manager, itunes is running on the process tab but not in the applications. here are the things that i have done so far.
    1. msconfig (instructions from the troubleshooting guide).
    2. created new user account profile.
    3. uninstall, restart, reinstall. (i even removed everything related to itunes in the registry before reinstalling itunes).
    4. checked for possible virus infection.
    5. uninstalled antivirus (AVG).
    6. microsoft updates.
hope someone can help me soon.. i need to add new songs to my ipod. Thanks in advance

Silent launch failure like this is commonly due to a problem with cryptographic services.
Here is a method for investigating the problem and hopefully making a diagnosis:
Before checking if iTunes works, restart your PC or close the iTunes.exe process with task manager if it is running.
A couple of simple things to try:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776?viewlocale=en_US
Stop the bonjour service, this FAQ has instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2250?viewlocale=en_US
But usually it is due to a problem with cryptographic services.
Check to see if you have your smart card service and that it is not set to disabled. For some reason iTunes needs it.
    Start>>Run>>Services.msc
you should find the smart card service in the list. Report back with your findings.
Malware can interfere with cryptographic services and also pervert a resolution so it is important to check that your system is clean before proceeding: Run a virus and spyware scan with up to date definitions.
Then work through *Method 4* in the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
You should be able to copy and paste the individual lines to save on typing.
Make a careful note of any error messages you get, they are important for diagnosis. Report back any error messages especially the names of any dlls mentioned.
If there are no errors try starting iTunes.

  • ITunes won't open after OS update to Yosmite

ITunes won't open after OS update, ITunes has been updated, it won't open or bounce. It will not allow me to move it to trash or reinstall it. I have already updated to OS X Yosmite two times as directed by apple, I have rebooted in safe made as well as Command/Option/P/R before start up. I have opened console/system log to see if there is anything going on but when I click on Itunes nothing happens, not even so much as half a line of script. I'm stumped. If I wanted someone to tell me to turn it off and on again I'd just watch IT Crowd. please help

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
If you head into your applications folder and locate iTunes. Right click iTunes and show package contents. In there there will be a contents folder --> MacOS --> double click on the iTunes terminal icon. This should force iTunes to open via a terminal window and at the very least it will tell you what it is getting stuck on.

  • ITunes won't open after downloading 7.0

My iTunes won't open after downloading 7.0, what should I do?

    replying to Robert
I get a Windows error code of 0x666D743F
    First see:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes fails to launch with an unknown error
    There are some other possibilities
That error has been known to be produced by having Total Recorder or the Volume Logic plug-in installed on the PC.
For a workaround for Total Recorder, see:

To check on the Volume Logic issue, see:
