ITunes won't open automatically - no iTunesHelper?

When I plug my iPhone into my Macbook Pro, nothing happens, even though the 'open iTunes when this iPhone is connected' box is checked. Someone said to check that iTunesHelper is available. It is listed in my user login items but there's a yellow triangle next to it with an exclamation mark in it. Under 'kind' it says 'unknown'. I couldn't find iTunesHelper listed in the iTunes package contents either.
If I do a manual synch, it works OK. I just prefer it to happen automatically
I just updated to Mountain Lion (though I had his problem with iTunes not opening automatically under Snow Leopard too) and have iTunes 10.6.3, so not sure what the problem is. Anyone have any suggestions? Thx.

  • Itunes won't open automatically when I plug iphone in

I have recently had a lot of trouble syncing calendars with my iphone.  I have done all sorts of restarts etc.  One problem throughout (recent) is that when I plug my ipne in, itunes won't start up automatically and sync.  I cannot tick the box on itunes saying "open itunes when this phone is connected" as it is pale grey and won't let me.  Anyone any other ideas?  Everything is updated.
I am on a mac and running Mac OS  X version 10.6.7
    itunes version 10.2.2 (12)

    Thanks!
The likeliest possibility I can think of based on your symptoms is damaged Apple Application Support program files. (Much like iTunes versions 9.0.x, iTunesHelper requires a properly functioning Apple Application Support in order to work correctly.)
*Assuming that you don't have a Safari for Windows version 4.0.5 installed on that system,* I'd try the following technique with a 32-bit Vista:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2256037
*If you have a Safari 4.0.5 installed on the system* we'll need to try something different. (We need to make sure that you have an Apple Application Support 1.2.0 on the PC in order for Safari 4.0.5 to work ... at the present point in time, the procedure I outline above will only put an Apple Application Support version 1.1.0 back on your PC.)

  • ITunes won't open automatically after connecting iPhone

Maybe I missed the discussion on this but I did search first.  I just bought an iPhone 4s and had already upgraded to iTunes 10.5.  iTunes will not open when the iPhone is initially plugged in.  I can manually open iTunes and it works fine.  'Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected.' is checked and the 'helper' process is running.  Any ideas?

  • ITunes won't open automatically

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  Whenever I sync my iPhone 4 with the computer, I have to manually open up iTunes. I've checked the box to open iTunes automatically, but it's not working.  What can I try?

I would be posting in the iTunes forums. However, System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. Select the file iTunes Helper and then click on the - sign. That deletes it. Now open your Applications folder and find the iTunes app. Click and hold on it while holding down the control key and select Show package contents.Open the Contents folder. Then open the Mac OS folder. There is a file called iTunes Helper. Click and hold on it while holding down the option key and copy it to your desktop. Close iTunes package folders. Drag the file iTunes Helper into the window of your Logins Items. Check the box Hide. Reboot or log out and back in. Now try.

  • Invalid Library File - ITunes won't open - AT ALL!!!

hi, need some help! ITunes won't open, at all. Have followed Apple's advice to recreate library (by locating library.xml and moving it to the desktop, while trashing the ITunes library.itl file)ITunes still doesn't open. Connecting Ipod to laptop does nothing either! Any advice would be great!

    Hey try this out:
Turn Norton 2005's Personal Firewall OFF, (turn it OFF Permanently until your ready to turn it back on) then click CONFIGURE.
Under the PROGRAMS tab remove any reference to Apple iTunes or iTunes or iTunes Helper Module or anything related. and reboot.
After coming back go back to Norton 2005's Personal Firewall, click CONFIGURE. Under the PROGRAMS tab click ADD at the bottom, a SELECT A PROGRAM
window will pop up. Add the following files one at a time, iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe, qttask.exe, QTInfo.exe. The last 3 are found
in your Quicktime folder where that is in your system. Click OK. Turn Norton 2005's Personal Firewall ON, and try starting iTunes again.
This worked for me. It seems the Quicktime files were never automatically entered into my Norton 2005's Personal Firewall allowable programs listing. Adding them
manually should help. I also noticed that from my previous version of iTunes the program listed in the Firewall was named Apple iTunes and not iTunes after I upgraded to 6.
Let me know if this works out.

  • ITunes won't open (this isn't an idiot question)

When I first got my iPod mini, I set everything up the way I wanted it and iTunes would open every time I plugged my iPod in. It was beautiful. Now, even though I didn't change anything to my knowledge, iTunes won't open when I plug my iPod into my computer--instead the folder for my contacts and calender opens as if I'm plugging in an external harddrive, and not my iPod. I never told Windows or iTunes to do that, and I still have the "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached" option selected. I've reselected it twice already hoping it was just a fluke, but no luck. I have to close that stupid folder that comes up, manually open iTunes, and even then iTunes takes a minute to realize I have an iPod attached.
I already searched the support pages, and I couldn't find anything. Maybe someone here can help me?

Hmmmm... I had this happen a while ago with an older version of iTunes and the iPod firmware. I was able to fix it after re-installing iTunes and updating the firmware. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the iPod in the Windows Device Manager.
With the iPod connected, right-click on My Computer and select "Properties". Go to the "Hardware" tab and click on "Device Manager". Find the iPod in the device listing ("Apple iPod USB Device" under "Disk drives" if you're using the USB connection), right click on it, and select "Uninstall" Tell Windows that you really do want to uninstall the device, and disconnect the iPod after it's fininshed. Then reconnect the iPod. Windows should recognize it as a new device and automatically install it. If it says you need to restart, do so.
That might fix the problem (windows will treat the iPod as a new device and remove whatever settings are currently opening the folder and making iTunes not launch).

  • ITunes won't open after installing upgrade and restarting

When I click on my iTunes icon in the dock, iTunes won't open. Instead, a message box comes up: "The file iTunes "library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
Just before this happened, I imported a lot of music into my library. Now iTunes only opens if I pIug my ipod into my Mac.
Is there any way I can get iTunes to open by clicking on the icon, as it used to do?

What version of iTunes is installed in the Apple default location ..... /Applications/iTunes ???
Drag the iTunes icon in the Dock to the Desktop and release; it will be deleted with a poof! Don't worry it's only an alias.
In your Home Page ~/Library/Preferences/ ......... drag to the Trash and delete:
    com.apple.iTunes.plist and com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
(don't worry ... new ones will be created upon relaunch of iTunes .... +see below+)
    Using: /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions
    RESTART the computer
Within the Applicatons folder: double-click the iTunes icon ... if the launch is successful, drag a copy of the iTunes icon to the Dock ... release ... you will now have a current alias in the Dock.
P.S. *Do Not* have the iPod connected to the computer during this process!

    Pleeeeeeeease heeeeeeeeeelp.
I love my iPod too much for it to be out of commission.

    It's 2006
okay. it's way rarer to get this sort of thing due to NIS 2006 than it is with 2005, but it has been known to happen.
try the technique from the following bbecker post. (heads-up ... it's taking a long time for that post in that thread to load for properly for some folks. so leave it to think for a few minutes until it's loaded fully, otherwise you might not see the correct post.)

  • ITunes doesn´t open automatically

    Hi!!!
iTunes doen´t open automatically when i connect my iphone, the click is where it suppose to be (open while connecting) but nothing happens
    Thanks!

This happened to me and what I found out from an Apple Store employee is that you should (make sure you have the "automatically sync" box checked in iTunes) then -
    1). Open your system preferences.
    2). Click on accounts
3). Select your account and click on login items - if you don't have "iTunesHelper" in the list you need to put it in there.
4). Go into your Application folder and scroll down to iTunes.
5). Do a control click on the iTunes icon and select "show package contents".
6). Double click the "contents" folder, then double click the "resources" folder.
7). Scroll down to the "iTunesHelper" and drag it and drop it into the login in window (what you looked at in number 3 above) and quit System Preferences.
    8). Plug in your iphone.

  • Itunes does not open automatically when I plug in iphone?

ITunes does not open automatically when I put my device via the USB cord into my computer.  Even though I checked that box in I tunes

    1. open up applications, and right click the itunes icon.
    2. select 'show package contents'
    3. open the contents folder
    4. open the resources folder
    5. scroll down until you find the ItunesHelper icon.
    6. Now open up your system preferences.
    7. select accounts
    8. select login items
    9. now drag the ItunesHelper icon into the login items screen
    10. This will now put the ituneshelper app into the startup items.

  • ITunes won't open and a Windows error message pops up

I downloaded iTunes 10.2.2.12 awhile ago.  It worked fine the first time.  Ever since then, whenever I plug in my ipod, my laptop recognizes and says it's syncing but iTunes won't open.  I double click on iTunes and I get an error message from Windows saying that an error has occurred and it needs to close iTunes but it never even opens up.  (The message doesn't give any error codes.)  I've tried completely uninstalling iTunes and all its components and then reinstalling it but I get the same error message.  I have Windows XP 2002 Home Edition SP 3.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Many thanks.
Yes, it is an "iTunes has encountered a problem" error.  The ModName: dnssd. dll        The ModVer: 2.0.5.0     Offset: 0000246c
With that one, by way of experiment, let's try disabling your Bonjour Service.
In your Start menu, right-click My Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
    ... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes again. Does it launch properly this time?

  • ITunes won't open, I get this message: The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file.

    iTunes won't open.
I get this message: The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file.

This may indicate a corrupt preference file with iTunes trying to open the wrong location. Try holding down shift as you launch iTunes then choose the correct file, normally <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. See iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one.

  • ITunes won't open after upgrading to 11

My girlfriend's iPad mini is disabled, so I'm trying to connect it to her old macbook (10.6.8), the one which it is associated with.  Upon plugging in the iPad, I was prompted to update iTunes, because the iPad is running iOS 7 and needs the latest version of iTunes.  I said ok, and iTunes upgraded to 11.
Now, iTunes will not start.  When i click on the icon, it bounces once and then nothing else happens.  I've tried restarting, creating new accounts, and deleting all the com.apple.itunes preference files, but it's not working.  What the ****?  I can't undisable the iPad because iTunes won't start.  How do I fix this?

After updating to OSX 10.9.3, my iTunes won't open. If I try to drag it to trash, I get the message "iTunes can't be modified or deleted because it is required by OS X".

  • ITunes won't open after I updated to 8.0.1

    Hello,
Here's a little background on what's been going with itunes before the recent problem. These past couple weeks I've tried to update my itunes to 8.0.1 through the Apple Software Update. It never worked and at the end of the process it would tell me to try again or do it manually. Also, I downloaded two new videos today that were already in the correct format. I added it to the itunes library with no problem and tried to convert the videos to the correct format just incase it wasn't. It gave me the message that the video was already in the correct format. When I tried to sync it with my ipod it told me the videos weren't in the correct format.
Ok so for the overall the main problem right now is itunes won't open at all. I manually downloaded the update and I restarted the laptop after I finished updating itunes. Since then, itunes won't open and continuously gives me this message "The itunes application could not be opened. an unknown error occurred (-50)". I've restarted my computer a few times and looked up as many forums and solutions I could, but no luck. Please, if someone could help, let me know. Thank you.
