Itunes won't open: "the folder cannot be found or created ans is required"

HELP! When I try to open my itunes a message occurs that states: The folder "itunes"cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "my music" folder.
When I click on the my documents/my music folder it is empty.
itunes will launch on other users on the same computer - just not mine.
Any ideas?

Hi,
You don't specify which Windows version you are using or which iTunes version either. Both would be helpful in diagnosing your issue. Also do you have separate partitions (Drives) for your Data and system?
Have you made any changes to the location of your My Documents Folder recently? Also I'm surprised that the My Music folder is totally empty, it should at least contain a shortcut to the 'Sample Music' folder! Have you indavertantly deleted the contents of the My Music folder, or may be 'dragged' the contents with the mouse to another location?
Making a few assumptions, ie. you are using Windows XP, have just one Drive (C:\)on your system and that you haven't changed any of the default settings in either Windows or iTunes:
Firstly do a search in your 'UserProfile' for the following file;
iTunes Music Library.xml
Do the search from the 'C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\' folder and specify under the 'More Advanced Options' that it 'Search hidden files and folders' & 'Search subfolders'. The 'UserName' is the name used to log into your User Account in Windows XP.
By doing this search from your UserName folder it restricts the search to your own profile as the file mentioned will be present in all the other account profiles on the system, that use iTunes.
This file contain all the settings information for iTunes which includes the setting for where the iTunes folder is located. For instance on my system the settings for the iTunes folder location look like this;
+*Music Folder*+
+*file://localhost/E:/Users/Public/Public%20Music/iTunes%20Music/My%20Albums*+
If you find this file in your UserName folders somewhere note their location, it should 'normally be stored in the default iTunes folder. If you have inadvertently moved the contents of the +*My Music*+ folder, this should help you to find where they have been moved to and then you can move them back again to the correct location.
HTH.
Jonathan.

  • ITunes will not open - the folder itunes cannot be found or created

I'm having troubles opening up itunes. Every time i click on the icon I get the following message
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My music folder.
I had itunes on my hard drive but it got too full and had to transfer the library to an external hard drive. This worked for a while but suddenly stopped working with the above message. iTunes is still in my program files and all the files are still there on the external hard drive but the program wont open.
Can I change the options somehow??

    hi y'all!
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My music folder.
the first place to start with this error message is this KB doc:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
... but if you run into the complication where the "My Music" folder doesn't appear in TweakUI, we've been having some success using the alternate technique in this Nigel Carpenter post:

  • The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required.

    Hello,
I cannot start iTunes. When I do, I get the following error message:
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. the default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder.
I have reviewed and gone through the recommendations for this problem, including downloading the WindowsPowerToys Tweak UI. The problem is that the Tweak UI does not know that there is a My Music special folder, so Tweak UI was of no use.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to make my Dell (Dell doesn't know either) understand that I have "My Music" folder on my computer....so it can be seen in my Tweak UI application.
    Thank you.
    Tim

    I have followed these instructions:
If the My Music folder is in the wrong location or incorrectly assigned in the Windows registry, you may see one of the following error messages:
    * "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."
    * "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the Music folder."
If you see one of the above errors, follow these steps to troubleshoot this:
    1. Verify the location of your Windows XP My Music folder. The default location for this folder is
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music
If you do not have this folder at the default location and have not moved it to another location, consider creating one inside your My Documents folder.
    2. Download and install Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Note: This utility is for Windows XP only. Please review the system requirements before installing.
    3. Once you have installed Tweak UI, open it from the Start menu.
    4. In the column on the left, click on the plus symbol next to My Computer and select Special Folders.
    5. In the right pane on the Folderlist, click My Music.
    * This is where I run into the problem. My Music does not show up in the *
    * right pane pull down set of options. *
    6. Click the Change Location button. You may see a warning message appear with precautions for changing this setting; after reviewing the message, click Yes.
    7. In the resulting window, browse for the My Music folder as described in step 1, and click OK.
    8. Reinstall or open iTunes.

  • Error message The folder Itunes cannot be found or created and is required"

Help please. I get the message "The folder Itunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My Music folder". As a result, I cannot get Itunes to load. Have uninstalled and reloaded, repaired etc, all not working as still end up getting same message. Have also made an ITunes folder in My music, all to no avail. No viruses and virus library totally up to date. Getting to stage where I want to throw Ipod in bin and get an Iriver as its driving me insane!!

Here is a copy of the ilounge entries. I got one of my more IT literate guys to do this - but it looked easy when he did it!! important thing is it all came back - was a problem as I had moved an external hard drive so one of the locations detailed below showed the old address.
    Good luck!!
    Click on Start
    Clin on Run
    Type in "regedit" Enter
Do this step twice as there are two locations.
    CTRL F
    Type in "My Music"
Double Click and enter the path for where the folder is located.
The exact locations of the 2 entries that I changed are
hkeycurrentuser - software - microsoft - windows - current version - explorer - shell folders
    and
as above - windows - current version - explorer - USER shell folders
Try changing the two items from there - if these have already been changed then I'm not sure what to suggest.

  • Been trying to access any service iTunes has, but am stopped with, "The Folder Cannot Be Found." Any fixes?

Hello. I've been trying to use any of the functions in iTunes, but to no avail. I seem to be stumped with the window that keeps popping up, telling me, "The Folder Cannot Be Found." Any advice?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.

  • Itunes error message "iTunes" cannot be found or created and is required.?

I try to load iTunes and receive the message as follows:
"iTunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside "My Music" folder.
I believe this has occurred because I moved my "My Music" folder to an external drive. But when I moved it back to the internal Hard drive c: this is the result. By the way on my other internal drive d: used to store my music files also I have the same problem.
When I start iTunes with the external Drive attached it reads the external drive.
Can anyone help me overcome this problem please.
I have deleted and reinstalled two versions of iTunes without correcting this problem.

  • I tunes folder cannot be found or created - windows xp install

    windows xp
trying to install itunes and i get the message "itunes folder cannot be found or created"
tried uninstall / reinstall - no dice
any help would be greatly appreciated

This is usually due to a problem with the registry setting for My Music, see this Apple article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302398
Occasionally the method using TweakUI doesn't work and a registry edit is required, I cna give you the method for that if required.

  • I just bought the MacBook Air and tried to transfer my songs from my external hard drive to my mac. now i cannot open iTunes and it said that the file cannot be found or created.

i just bought a macbook air. ive been transfering all my songs from my external harddrive that i had on my previous laptop for itunes. now that i got them transfered. my itunes wont open. it says "the itunes library file cannot be found or created. the default location for this file is in the itunes folder in the music folder." what do i do!?!

How did you move the music?  You have to do it in a specific way:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • ITunes won't open the library I backed up to my ext. HDD?

I recently reformatted my windows 7 Acer laptop, my itunes library was all consolidated and I copied the iTunes folder from music to the hdd,  after reinstalling windows I downloaded iTunes, copied and replaced the itunes folder in music with the one on my drive, opened it with shift and chose the library but iTunes will not open my library it just opens to a empty iTunes? All my media is in the folder and will open and play in iTunes if I double click on a individual song, movie ECT.. How do I get my itunes back?

I am having the exact same problem.  Checked firewall and it does not appear to be the problem.  I have uninstalled and then reinstalled and the bar to load iTunes will get about halfway and then go away and I am left with a white page with iTunes Store as the only script.  It was happening last evening as well...

  • Latest update for iTunes won't update - says path cannot be found!

I am trying to update iTunes.  I have iTunes version 11.1.0.126 and my computer runs on Windows XP v. 5.1.  The iTunes.msi installer is downloading to a folder on my computer but then both automatic and manual update fail and I am getting a message saying the "network resource is unavailable" and directing me to choose another path.  When I check the path I see that it is entirely correct!  When I click on OK i get another message saying iTunes.msi cannot be found!  What gives?

Did you ever get an answer?  I also have Windows XP and cannot update it gives me the same error you got.  The updates were working just fine, then one day when I ran the updates I got the eror so I quit the update.  So every subsequent update iTunes said was available will not work. Prior to the first error, I had done nothing new to my computer.  PLEASE let me know if you got this issue solved and if so, what did you have to do.

  • ITunes won't open because Quicktime was not found!

This is the first time this error came up, when i open iTunes, an error comes up saying "QuickTime Unavaliable" and how i have to uninstall iTunes and install it again... Well i did that a million times and uninstall quicktime and installed quicktime over and over and over and over agaim and this error keeps popping up!!! I NEED HELP!!! This error has no number, it just says i need to uninstall tinues and reinstall it!

If you definitely have a working QuickTime but iTunes thinks that you7 do not, then this points to a particular type of error.
Do you have a computer that has been set up for a work network? You may find that iTunes works OK when the computer is connected to the network but doesn't at home when not connected.
There are other possibilities, but this is a common one.
If I have guessed right, the problem lies in the %path% environment variable. In order to look at its contents, could you do the following:
    Type:
    cmd
into your search box and click cmd under Programs.
The black cmd window will open.
Next copy&paste the following into the cmd window and press return:
    echo %path% >documents\path.txt
This will place the contents of the %path% variable in a text file called Path in (My) Documents.
Could you copy&paste this text file into your next post so I can look at it.
(Use ctrl V to paste into the editor, right click doesn't work.)
