ITunes won't play in Windows Vista

I'm helping a friend with the iTunes on her Windows Vista computer and her problem is that whenever she tries to play ANY song in iTunes, it will not play (the time in the song stays at 0:00, and most of the time iTunes freezes. I have tried:
Running iTunes as an Administrator
Running iTunes in Windows XP SP2 mode
Upgrading to latest verion of iTunes
Uninstalling iTunes, restarting, and installing the latest version of iTunes
None of these troubleshooting steps have worked, what should I try next?
Thanks!
I'm glad stuff like this doesn't happen on my Mac

tried that...comes up telling me it needs to sync and that there isn't enough room.

  • ITunes won't play in Windows 8.1...help!

I just updated my computer from Window's 8 to 8.1 and now iTunes won't play anything at all. I can open up the iTunes store and everything else, but once I click on a song it will show that it is playing but nothing happens. I even tried moving "QTMovieWin.dll" from  c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\  to  c:\program files (x86)\iTunes but nothing happened after I did that. Is there anything else that can be done to fix this problem? Thanks!

I have searched high and low for the right solution for this issue.  I'm on an HP Envy laptop, running iTunes 12, and just upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I tried the settings for bit rate as suggested above and it still didn't work, but I did solve the problem.
In iTunes I went to Preferences > Playback > Play Audio Using ... and changed the setting from "Direct Sound" to "Windows Audio Session"
Now my iTunes on my laptop works!

  • WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium

We have a HP Desktop PC running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Just recently, certian sound files quit playing.  We also noticed that the system sounds quit working as well.  After looking into it more, I figured out that the drivers are all up to date, that iTunes plays music just fine, and that the internal error beeper in the tower replaced the error.wav when an error window pops up.   I have run defragment, check disk, and other system scanners.  None of these seemed to help.  Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Have you checked the HP Website and Microsoft Support websites to see if they have any solutions to your problem? Since there could be multiple things causing this, I would check at the places I mentioned first and see if their knowledge base contains an answer.

Accck. Have you checked to see if you've got a broken Windows Modules Installer, ral? See the following thread for troubleshooting advice for that possibility:

  • ITunes Won't Install On Windows Vista

    Hi,
About a year ago, I had iTunes on my Windows Vista 32-bit SP2 computer and then I switched to Mac, so I uninstalled iTunes on my Windows Vista computer thinking I wouldn't need it anymore.
Now I want to install iTunes again on it but, I keep getting this error message: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
At this point I really don't know what to do.
    Thanks.

  • Itunes won't start & Freezes Windows Vista - Please Please Help!!

    Hey Guys,
Ever since I've upgraded to Itunes 10.1.2, my itunes won't even open. I click the icon on my desktop, I get the swirly circle for a bit, and then it stops. In the task manager, itunes.exe is listed as one of the processes, but doesn't seem to be running. I've tried EVERY solution I could find in these forums. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes about 6 times now, and I've even tried older versions. But nothing works. I've ran malware software, disabled my antivirus, and even tried to get the guys at the genius bar to help me (unfortunately they're not as well versed in PCs).
If you have any clues as to what may be going on - PLEASE Please Help me!! I'm a huge music buff, and it's been a MONTH since I last used itunes, and I would really love to have it back!
I will say this - occasionally after I reinstall itunes, a window that shows "checking music library" will pop up, but I'll wait for 45 minutes, and nothing will happen. I thought it might have to do with the fact that I have a good 100 GB of music on my external hd, but everything worked fine before.
Thank you all so SO much for your help, any input is greatly appreciated!

Really? Can no one help me?!

  • ITunes won't work with Windows Vista

Everytime I try to open itunes I get the error message,  'itunes has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem'.  That ends everything.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, used System Restore, removed all new installs - nothing works.  Pua

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem. When I open itunes I get the error message saying 'itunes has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem'. Then sometimes it pops up telling me that itunes has an update that will stop this from happening, but that just takes me to the itunes download page. Sometimes it tells me that DEP has stopped it from working but I can't turn this off for itunes. When I go to the event log I get the following info:

I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and tried to repair it several times. I've also uninstalled quicktime and reinstalled it and it's working fine. I've restarted my computer several times as well!
    I have Vista 32 bit.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I've been on these forums for ages looking for a solution, but it seems like most people solved the problem by just reinstalling quicktime.
    Thanks

  • Sound not working & iTunes won't play & Netflix error

Sometimes my sound stops working, and songs on iTunes won't play when this happens. Also if I try to watch Netflix an error message comes up: "Netflix Playback Error N8157 3140" and it says it could have something to do with my Silverlight plugin.
    This is what it says:
The error you're seeing is related to the Silverlight plugin, which Netflix uses to play movies and TV shows on your computer.
This error is usually caused by one of two things:
A computer setting preventing Silverlight from storing files it needs to play your movie or TV show
An issue with the Silverlight plugin itself
To fix this error, follow the steps below for your Windows or Mac computer.
    Reinstall your audio card drivers
Your audio card drivers may be out of date or corrupt.
Uninstall and reinstall your audio card driver. Your owner's manual or audio card manufacturer's website can help.
However, I have tried deleting and reinstalling silverlight, but it doesn't make a difference. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? It only happens sometimes, other times I have no problems and it works fine.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • With Windows 7 Home Premium, whenever I start iTunes, I get a message that colors have been reverted to Windows Basic because iTunes won't support my Windows Aero configuration.  Is there a fix for the incompatibility?

With Windows 7 Home Premium, whenever I start iTunes, I get a message that colors have been reverted to Windows Basic because iTunes won't support my Windows Aero configuration.  Is there a fix for the incompatibility?  I don't mind the color changes, but I'm having an external speaker problem that could be related to the incompatibility (at random times--usually several hours after start-up, my external speakers--connected via my Samsung Central Station's wireless docking station and computer-installed dongle--shut off and won't play until I restart.  I've investigated other options, but iTunes may be the problem.)  Thanks.

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

    Hey guys, here's my problem.
I had some major issues with OSX last week that a trip to the Apple Store couldn't fix. Their only advice was to save all my pictures, music, documents, etc. and reformat. I did that yesterday. I reinstalled everything and then downloaded all the most recent updates.
Today, I can play all the music I own in iTunes (music imported from CDs, bought from other sites, and music bought from iTunes itself). However, it won't play any of the music videos I have (all bought off iTunes).
I have authorized the computer again and again. When I try to open the videos in Quicktime it tells me that I don't have permission to play them and that I need to authorize the computer.
    I'm lost. Any help?

Yup, this Audio but no Video WAS exactly the same trouble I was having, on my MacBook and iMac but not the other 2 MacBooks. This was due to the speaker settings at the bottom right hand corner of the iTunes window. I do use multiple speakers via Airtunes, on the two that were having trouble but not the other two, and although the speakers were only set to the computer it still wouldn't play the video content.
Whilst the audio (of the music video) was playing I then went to reselect multiple speakers, which brought up the "*failure to connect to remote speakers network refused connection*" warning, then I unchecked the remote speakers to leave just the "Computer" and hey presto the video came to life.
Thank you Charles C n Miami and hope this extra info helps.
    Happy Music Video Watching
    Matt

Hi, So I've just upgraded to Tiger (install went well, thanks for asking), but in iTunes 7.6 my movies wouldn't play (I double-clicked on them, nothing happened; same with the play button). So I deleted them and then tried re-importing them, but then
