ITunes Won't Play Music Files or Store (Music) Previews

Running iTunes 11.0.1.12 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 (Build 7601).  Cannot play any of my music files in iTunes (local or from iCloud), nor does iTunes play any Store music preview.  The time bar does not move from 00:00, and there's no sound (even if I manually move the progress indicator past 00:00.
It will play movies and TV shows.  I've Googled the heck out of this issue and see no solution that works for me.
My sound (card and speakers) do work and are working.
Also, strangely, iTunes disappears from my status bar when minimized, and does not appear when shift-tabbing through open programs.

Thanks, Niel!  That makes sense.  I used to use itunes a lot on my old pc laptop.  Hadn't really gotten around to using it much, if at all, on my macbook pro.
Much obliged,
S.

  • All of a sudden, my iTunes won't play music.

All of a sudden my iTunes won't play anything in the store or my library. Updates are done and my windows computer is authorized. It has worked fine in the past and then all of a sudden, I click play and nothing plays. I can play music and video in other programs except itunes. Volume is up also. It won't play at all. Any suggestions???

    I would suggest first,
looking for the files (not in iTunes but on the desktop. If you find the files they've simply been removed from iTunes. - If you can't find the files they've been erased and there's not a lot that can be done.
Removing files from and iPod is another question. Firstly, it IS difficult, but it can be done. There are numerous tutorials on the web on how to do it.
    Regards,
    Peter.

    Hey guys, here's my problem.
I had some major issues with OSX last week that a trip to the Apple Store couldn't fix. Their only advice was to save all my pictures, music, documents, etc. and reformat. I did that yesterday. I reinstalled everything and then downloaded all the most recent updates.
Today, I can play all the music I own in iTunes (music imported from CDs, bought from other sites, and music bought from iTunes itself). However, it won't play any of the music videos I have (all bought off iTunes).
I have authorized the computer again and again. When I try to open the videos in Quicktime it tells me that I don't have permission to play them and that I need to authorize the computer.
    I'm lost. Any help?

Yup, this Audio but no Video WAS exactly the same trouble I was having, on my MacBook and iMac but not the other 2 MacBooks. This was due to the speaker settings at the bottom right hand corner of the iTunes window. I do use multiple speakers via Airtunes, on the two that were having trouble but not the other two, and although the speakers were only set to the computer it still wouldn't play the video content.
Whilst the audio (of the music video) was playing I then went to reselect multiple speakers, which brought up the "*failure to connect to remote speakers network refused connection*" warning, then I unchecked the remote speakers to leave just the "Computer" and hey presto the video came to life.
Thank you Charles C n Miami and hope this extra info helps.

  • Updated from xp to windows 7 and iTunes won't play music

I have recently updated my computer from windows XP to windows 7, and I backed everything up on a flashdrive. I reinstalled all of my documents from the flashdrive using Window's easy transfer. I then downloaded the new iTunes. After it was done transfering the songs and I went to play a song, it would not play. I then closed iTunes and re-opened it, when a sign pops up that reads "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly." I don't understand what is going on because iTunes has every song I had from when I had windows XP but it won't play them. If you know how to fix this or what is going on I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.

If you mean computers that are authorised (iOS devices aren't authorised/deauthorised) then you can't see a list of which computers are authorised, you can only see how many : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
For devices/computers that are associated to your account you can see a list of them, and if it's been more than 90 days since a computer/device was associated remove the association, by logging into your account via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627

  • ITunes won't play music on iPad after update to iOS5.

iTunes still appears to be present on the iPad following the load of iOS5, and music tracks are displayed, but it won't play any of the tracks. Has anyone successfully resolved this problem?
Why is there no way of directly contacting Apple to inform them that their software doesn't work, without buying service from them? I would have thought that this is the sort of thing they would want to know PDQ.
Looking at the other questions, there are a large number of errors caused by uploading this new release.

My wife did find a partial solution. She deleted all music tracks, and reloaded, but without converting to .aac format. The iPad will now play music.
    Hope that helps.

  • Please help! Itunes won't play music!

I think it had to do with some things that I uninstalled yesterday. There was some java updates that were taking up some space so I got rid of them. I got up this morning and tried to play some music and it won't play! Everything else works but he music won't play. It says that it's playing but the timer stays at 0:00. Can anyone help me?

I wish I could help you, but I have the same problem. My daughter got her ipod wet/sweaty during a run and now it will not play songs it previously played just fine.
Everything seems to work but the counter stays at "0" and songs won't play. I restored it, reloaded it and the same problem.\

  • Itunes won't play music stored on external drive after upgrade to 10.5.3

I updated to 10.5.3 with music files stored on external drive. iTunes shows all music, but will not play. I did have the library file stored locally-I'm not sure if this is why the files all show in Itunes. Music files are about 40gb so I don't have space on my MBpro to store files locally without lag.
When I click a song to play nothing happens. I've read a bunch of other discussions but the only option I've seen is to delete the library and start over. I have a bunch of playlists so I don't want to lose that data and I would rather not have to go to each playlisty and export and import again. Suggestions?
I use match and also store everything in the cloud-but that isn't showing up either

Okay, found the reason in another tread...

  • ITunes won't play music anymore from iTunes Match

In February I purchased the iTunes Match service and uploaded about 2000 songs to it.  Some purchased directly from iTunes over the years and some ripped from my CD collections.   After verifying that it works fine, I deleted the ~250GB of space that they took on my older MacBook Pro to make space for other things.
A couple of weeks ago I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (great!) and I've started to use iTunes on it.  I've added it to my Apple ID account and "authorized" it inside iTunes and expected to continue and use it to listen to music and all.
I was able to see all my music listed clearly and also all my genious mixes but nothing happens with I try to Play anything.   No message and no complaint, simply silence.   If I purchase and download a new song, I can play it, but nothing from the cloud!
I tried to "Update iTunes Match" and still nothing happens and I can't play a thing.
I tried to "Turn Off iTunes Match" and then turned it back on.  The entire list disappeared on me and after a long wait, I don't see it coming back... I'm out of the country right now and I see this small note at the bottom of the Music section of iTunes saying that "Music is available in the iTunes Store in select countries".    I'm using the US store and can certainly purchase music and movieds but the iTunes Match stopped working on me.

Well, after another restart of iTunes, my list of 2000 songs magically appeared and I can now play it.
So, this seemed to be a glitch that amended itself.

  • IPod won't open in iTunes, won't play music

K so a few days ago, for no apparent reason, I kept getting a message from windows saying it had to scan and fix the ipod (which is managed manually on itunes 10). fixing wouldnt seem to do anything, but if I clicked continue the ipod still worked fine. I could put music on it, it would play etc.
then yesterday, I plugged it in to the computer, and itunes would just become unresponsive. when I pulled out the ipod, itunes would work again. the ipod would play, but i wouldnt be able to add music to it. i tried restarting everything i could think of, to no effect.
soooo then today, windows prompted me to fix again. so it "fixed" the ipod, and magically the ipod would open in itunes. so I added some music to it and went on my merry way. but now the ipod itself doesnt work. when I highlight "music" the side of the screen says "no music". when I look in the about section, there is 113 gigs of "other" files, which should be music. when I plug back into itunes it doesn't work at all.

Same exact problem here and I have found no clues yet.

  • Itunes won't play music

Help! The songs are checked. When I try to play a song, it starts to play and I get the "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. All other functions seem to work fine. It's only when i try to play a song. This happened after I removed creative playcenter so I don't know if that will affect it. I might have deleted or removed something important. I tried as many of the solutions on these forums as I could find. Thanks.

I tried reinstalling itunes and quicktime. I can't recover any of the files since my recycle bin is empty. I know that was stupid but it happened. Itunes still gets the "itunes encountered a problem" message when i just play songs and forces me to close it. I also tried the msconfig and the registry key solutions and it didn't fix it. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

  • Itunes won't play music - exclamation points by all songs - need help!!

I have been on this board several times and still can't locate the answer to allow me to play my music in Itunes. Here is my situation. If you can help, I would appreciate it.
I have had my Itunes library stored on my external hard drive. I hadn't accessed Itunes in a while and when I did, my music is no longer being recognized by the program. All I get is the exclamation point next to each song and when I click on the song I am asked to relocate the song itself. Since getting the exclamation point no matter what I do short of relocating every song individually (over 4000 songs), I decided to call "apple cares". I had no success with them as they couldn't help.
I have now unistalled/reinstalled my Itunes twice, I have redirected my preferences to my external drive and consolidated my library several times, I have tried to use my older less updated library on my regular hard drive only to have the same exclamation points appear.
I am at a loss as to what I need to do. I really don't want to lose my music - imported from cds or purchased - nor do I want to spend the rest of 2007 relocating each and every song.
If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate help. You can email me directly at [email protected]
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Debra

Thanks for replying, Please read our Operating System details before taking a guess about what 'could' be the problem...
I think I figured it out anyway, Windows Media Player might be adding extra information that iTunes does not like, either Windows Media Player and/or iTunes 7.7.1 don't conform to ID3 v2.4 standards...
Please fix your software, Apple. I know how you love to be unique and mock PC users with your one-sided advertisements but at least conform to the ID3 standards.

  • ITunes won't stream music previews

I recently updated my iTunes software to the latest version and ever since I tried to look for some new music on the iTunes store, I have been unable to listen to the previews because they quit after playing 7-10 seconds of the song. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, as one of my friends is also having the same issue and I'm assuming there are others who may have experienced/are experiencing the same problem. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

I've been having the same problem for a few weeks. I got the problem resolved temporarily by reinstalling Norton 360, but the problem came back a couple days later.
