IWeb '08 Damage Control

Here's the full text from the MacFixIt post on iWeb '08.
"iWeb '08 Calamity: Lost site content, crashes, significantly increased resource usage, more
Backup your Domain files Make a copy of this file -- located in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain -- before attempting to update to or use iWeb '08. The program is causing serious issues for a number of readers (as discussed below), and may delete or make inoperable parts of your stored Web site(s). Saving this file can mean the difference between losing or maintaining your current site data.
Missing site elements including photo galleries The most dire issue users are experiencing after updating to iWeb '08 is the sudden disappearance of various site elements, particularly photo galleries. Many users have reported that entire swaths of their sites are completely missing after launching the update and attempting to work with their pre-existing site(s) file.
Crashes A surprisingly high number of users are reporting repeated crashes after updating to iWeb '08.
Ironically, it appears that many of the crashes can be resolved by removing the file ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain. In essence, it looks like iWeb '08 is choking on the sites file created by older versions of iWeb. So move this file to a separate location, and try launching iWeb '08 again.
Increased resource usage/slowness Users are reporting that the new version of iWeb uses significantly more memory and processor time than its predecessor."
Until the bug fix is released it would seem sensible to keep your original sites on iWeb '06, backup the application and your domain.sites files to another planet and start using iWeb '08 to develop new ideas and explore the new features.
Any more thoughts?

I was having some major issues with missing pages and crashes...but I just made some serious progress:

  • System properties and damage control

So, I have this problem concerning some class library I'm supposed to use (in fact, it's live on our servers as we speak).
I'm utilizing this class library in an axis webservice, on an instance of tomcat that runs a lot of other stuff. Every now and then, my webservice has hogged up all the network connections allowed for tomcat, so I checked out the code for this class library. They've used an HTTPUrlConnection, with no timeout set. Fine. I checked it up, and there was no easy way to set a timeout on a HTTPUrlConnection, except using System.setProperty("sun.net.client.defaultConnectTimeout", "somevalue").
However, if I use this method, I'm wondering how far this change would reach. Is the System object the same for all of this process of tomcat? If I change the timeout here, will it mess things up in the other web apps on the same instance of tomcat?
    Would appreciate help :)

I can see that following system property is also present
    sun.desktop=windows
Can I use it? Yes, in the same fashion as you can use "os.name". That is, you can sample a bunch of your target systems, find a pattern and some rules to discriminate one OS from another in a way that's meaningful for your program, and hope that your guess is accurate enough and that the underlying results are stable across releases.
And if I can is there any "standardization" for the values returned? No, I'm pretty sure there's not.

  • Damage control Best Buy!***********!

Take these steps immediately to avoid the PR nightmare that this has become. 1.Immediately investigate and terminate all employees who sold to family members and friends. Dozens of customers reported being called to pickup their phones only to be called back and told forget it they are not getting a phone. The easiest way to investigate this will be to verify receipts. Preorders that were not fulfilled will have a timestamp. If a timestamp on one preorder was June 15th 12pm and didn't receive a phone yet a Iphone was sold to someone with a timestamp of June 16th 10am there is your culprit. 2.Contact all preorder customers. Update them on the status and apologize for this mess. Let them know when the next shipment is expected and what number they are to receive it. 3.Compensate all preorder customers with something whether it's a $25 gift card or free case it doesn't matter. 4. Inform the media, customers on what steps will be taken in the future to prevent preorders from being subject to diversion from customers to friends and relatives of employees.

Arrrgh... On the iphone forums I frequent, everyone and their mother already have their iphone 4. Apparently only us people stupid enough to believe in Best Buy right now are still sitting around waiting for something we ordered 2 weeks ago. (not trying to call anyone else stupid, but I just really feel stupid right now, considering I already knew how unreliable Best Buy is about anything)

  • Can't create a file, Can't Publish to iWeb

When I try to publish some changes to my site, I get a Publish Error that says: Can’t create the file “droppedImage.png.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.
My iDisk doesn't seem otherwise to be damaged and it is less than half full.
Has anyone seen this and can help me with it?
    Thanks

Copy your domain.sites2 file to the desktop from the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Control-click on it and select Show Package contents from the contextual menu. Search that package for the droppedImage.png file and copy it to the desktop. Open it with Preview. Do a Save as, select PNG and save as a new file - droppedImage2.png.
Rename that file back to droppedImage.png and move it back into the domain.sites2 package replacing the original png file.
Rename the original domain.sites2 file to domain-original.sites2 and move the edited package from the desktop into the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Open iWeb and publish to a folder to test. If it publishes OK to a folder publish to your .Mac account. If it doesn't go as hoped you still have the original domain file to fall back on.

  • Multiplex control files in Oracle 10g...

    Hi ,
the Oracle documentation , in one of its books points out....:
'Once the disk drive is repaired, the damaged control file can be restored using the intact copy of the control file from the other disk and the instance can be restarted'.
Is it achievable automatically.... or using some kind of sql commands and which , if any.....?????
    Regards,
    Simon

    there's a parameter called
    control_files
in your spfile/pfile whichever you use.
You can just multiply as many control files as you wish at OS level (copy) and list them in the parameter, then start your database.

  • Enlarging Photo Viewer In iWeb

The current max size is 600x800. Does anyone know how to make it larger, like 1024x768 etc..
Not using .mac to publish. I can see the code, but it won't allow changes (or will it ??)
    Thanks,
    Paul

    First, try this approach:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=2607293
if that isn't good enough, you will need to look into javascript, iweb slideshows are controlled by javascript.

  • Title Tags not working with iWeb SEO Tool

I created my website using iWeb and realizing iWeb is very controlling over title tags and such, I downloaded the iWeb SEO Tool.  I have recorded my title tags and codes but when I search my site on google, Home is still recorded as the title tag.  I even went so far as to add an HTML Snippet to change the title tag using java script but still no luck.  Please help!

    The main question is :
Does the title you added show in the browser title bar?
If it does then SEO tools did its job.
But don't expect Google to stand waiting next to you and updates its database after you pressed the ok button.
Check again in a few weeks/months.
And do not waste your time with that silly application or using a JavaScript in the HTML Snippet for the intended purpose. Google does not execute the JavaScript.
Just read this very carefully :
iWeb uses the textbox in the Header layer of an iWeb page as the title in the browserwindow.
Do not remove the original textbox, as you cannot replace it other than by selecting another theme and then change it back to the original theme again. Ruining the layout in the process.
If the textbox in the Header is missing, iWeb uses a textbox down the page in the Content layer. If that textbox is also missing, it uses another textbox. If that fails it uses the pagename in the Sidebar.
Sometimes you may want a different text in the titlebar and not display it on the page itself. Or not display it at all.
So use that textbox in the Header layer. Type your text. Then select the textbox. In the Inspector choose T, click a color to open the color palette and drag the opacity slider to 0 (zero).
Do Command-T to open the font palette and make the font smaller. (Or do Command--(minus)) Also use a font that doesn't change to an image. Arial is a good font. Perhaps do it first before making the text invisble.
Resize the textbox. You may want to change the height of the Header layer.
Do Command-Shift-B to move the textbox to the back, possibly behind other objects.
Next add a optional second textbox to the Header layer and use that one to display text on the page.
If you want to move the textbox to the front again to make changes, but can't remember the location on the page, drag the area with the mouse to select the objects.
Deselect objects you do not want to move forward by Command-dragging the mouse over these objects.
Next do Command-Shift-F to move the textbox to the front. Repeat the steps in reverse order to make the text visible.
    Practice.
Then concentrate on creating interesting webpages.

  • Created iweb on one computer, but want to work on it on my home computer

How can I open up my iweb page on another of my computers.
I used Idisk and saved the file, but everytime I open Iweb, it wants to start a new page and there is no option to open an existing page.

The easiest method is to go into the Preferences folder on the computer containing your most recent version. Open the Applications Support folder. Scroll down to iWeb. Now control-click the file and choose "Create Archive". It will make an iWeb.zip file.
Now take this .zip file over to your other computer. Trash the iWeb folder in the Applications support folder. Put the .zip file in the Application support folder and double click it. Next time you open iWeb, all will be fine.
If you choose to make changes on your iWeb page from this second (or third, or forth) computer, you just have to remember to 'archive' to any other computers before doing more work on them.
If your site's not that extensive, transfering the file via a flash drive is easy. Larger sites require either trasfer via network, target mode, or a larger flash drive.

  • .Mac renewed today, and NOW I can't publish to iWeb.

I am a long time .Mac user, and saw last night that I had Zero days left to renew. I was still able to upload my site. I renewed .Mac today, and NOW I get a message when uploading my iWeb stuff to sign in to .Mac...Which I already am. The moment I open the system preferences for .Mac, my upload (to iweb) window dissapears. Now I am screwed. Help. Please.

I had a similar problem but Apple's .Mac Tecnical Support came to the rescue:
"Based on the information you provided, we understand that when trying to publish your site to .Mac, iWeb reports an error message stating:
"There was an error reading your iDisk quota."
Currently, we are investigating similar reports from other .Mac members.
If iWeb continues to report the error message, first ensure you have an up-to-date backup of the file package that contains your iWeb domain's files.
Note: A file package is similar to a folder in that it contains multiple individual folders or files, but differs in the fact that you cannot not open it in the same way as a folder.
For more information on file packages, or sometimes called "bundles," please see the following article:
Useful Mac OS X Terms: What is a Bundle?
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43135>
Your iWeb domain's files are stored in a file package labeled either Domain, or Domain.sites.
To locate the Domain, or Domain.sites, package:
    1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    2. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
    3. Type (or copy and paste from here): ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb
Backup 3, which includes exciting new features that provide for multiple backup plans, advanced file restoration, and the ability to back up more than one Mac to your iDisk, is now available for download from .Mac.
You can use Backup 3 back up the Domain, or Domain.sites, file package, or you can save the file to CD, DVD, or other removable media without using Backup.
After backing up the Domain, or Domain.sites, package, remove the preference files associated to your iWeb domain.
To remove your iWeb domain's preference files:
    1. Quit iWeb, if it is open.
    2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    3. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
    4. Type (or copy and paste from here): ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb
    5. Control-click Domain, and then choose Show Package Contents from the shortcut menu.
Note: In the newly opened Domain window you will see one file, or possibly two, named "assets.<membername>.groups.<groupname>.plist", or "assets.<membername>.plist" where <membername> represents your .Mac member name, and <groupname> represents one of your .Mac groups.
    6. Move the file, or files, to the Trash.
    7. Close the Domain window, and then restart your computer.
After restarting, open iWeb and try to publish your site."

  • Anyone have experience with an EQ on a side-chain to limit or control just specific frequencies?

There are little clicks and clucks on some bass tracks and if I could compress or limit those frequencies without squashing everything, that would be excellent. Most insights I see online are about making techno, hip-hop, and other types of modern sounds. What I'm doing is damage control on stuff that's more old fashioned.
Also, if anyone knows of the feature in Final Cut Studio that is supposed to sample certain sounds like that (like the ticks on vinyl records) and filter those without destroying the rest. Of course it's not perfect, but I was told that if you set it subtly so not to get all of it and re-sample what was left, it could be useful and not especially destructive.

If you are trying to remove clicks like scratches and dust on a vinvl record, you will need to use a declicker/denoiser. This is partly becasue a compressor simply won't 'bite' quick enough to stop a pop from getting through, and partly becasue, even if it did, it would be reducing everything in proportion and the pop would still be the loudest sound...meaning you'd lose the rest of the track material before you lost the pop.
If on the other hand you are adamaant about compressing the clicks down, you don't want sidechain compression, your want multiband compression. Use the Multipressor and read the tutorials.
Finally, if you are trying to MAKE a sidechain with only a few frequencies in it, then send the sound to a buss, solo the buss and apply the filtering/eq to that buss. Then use it as your sidechain input with the compressor.

  • How do you get from iweb to .mac?

hey guys.. just bought ilife 06 and a .mac for the purpose of setting up a website. i have created a site in iweb and i go to publish and i cant find it anywhere in my .mac. where is it... and am i transferring it correctly?
    -payne

    Hi Mark,
part of it is on your mac and part is transferred directly to your idisk (from what I can tell.)
    navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites
control click on domain.sites to "show package contents" and you will see your content files. The html files are not there so I think those are uploaded directly without copying them to file on the computer (I think).
If you choose to upload to a different web space then you can save the site to a folder.

  • Remove iWeb Templates

i have iweb09 and i installed some templates and they are crap. Can someone please tell me how to remove it.
    thanks

Check with the developer from where you got the theme and see if they have an uninstaller for it. Here's a way you can try on a backup of the iWeb application:
1 - open the iWeb application package: Control-click on the app and select Show Package Contents.
2 - type Command+F to bring up the Search window.
3 - set the search for iWeb and file name.
4 - enter the theme name in the search field.
5 - delete all items that the search produces. They will all have the theme name in the file name.
6 - close the package and launch iWeb and see if it will work OK.
*Be sure to have a backup copy of not only the application but on your domain.sites2 file(s).*

  • Allowing others to upload to iWeb

When I watched Steve's announcement of iLife '08, I think he referred to the ability of others to add photos to a gallery I create, and even to do this from the iPhone. Does anyone know how to set this up? I can't seem to find any reference to how to accomplish this. My daughter is away at college, and I want her to be able to add to photos to our site.
    Thanks

is there a way to allow others to upload photos directly into the iweb not thru the gallery because that is what i was trying to find out. its just that the iweb allows more control than the gallery does.

  • IChat Link in iWeb, HELP!!!

Hi is it possible to have a iChat link ( example: ichat://[email protected] ) in iWeb 09' ..? Everytime I use the inspector to change the "Link". it goes back to a http: link , and won't allow the change etc.
    PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance!
    Message was edited by: M.Mercer

It should work fine once you publish it online.
Keep in mind you are inserting HTML code directly into your site. That means that the other tools within iWeb (like text controls) have no power here.
You can modify the appearance of the text generated by the code by using more code:
    <!--<a href="aim:goim?screenname=[email protected]"><font face="arial" size="18" color="red">click here to chat me</font></a>-->
The "font face=" is where you specify the name of the font you want. The "size=" is where you specify the point size of the font. The "color=" is where you specify the color of the text.
Again, make sure you are copying the code starting with the "<a href" and ending with "/a>"
