  • Can't install iWork 06 or 08 on iBook

iWork 06 and 08 (full versions) both hang up in the "Writing files" stage of installation. I meet all the system requirements for OS (10.4.11) and Quicktime (7.5) and haven't had any problems installing iLife or anything else. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
    Megan

Success! A safe boot (after removing /Applications/iWork '06/ and all iWork-related things in /Library/Receipts/ and /Library/Preferences), made the installer run just fine. Now Pages and Keynote both load without trouble. Thanks!
Another strange thing I noticed along the way, though: When I thought it might be an intel-switch thing, I went looking for the "run in Rosetta" checkbox in the Get Info window, but it wasn't there, even though it said Pages was Universal. So, I used ditto to make i386-only, ppc-only, and ppc64-only copies. The i386 copy tried to run, and crashed, just like the Universal copy did. Each of the ppc copies had grey slashes over their icons, and when I tried to run them, I was told that they didn't support my architecture. Shouldn't they have just run under Rosetta automatically instead?

  • IWork '08 & iLife '08 on iBook G3

Well, the title says it, but I didn't do anything, bought it from the store, installer worked even though its "unsupported".

If it's "unsupported," that's what it means. Don't expect it to work, and you won't be disappointed.

  • Top of the range: Mac Mini vs iBook

    Hey hey,
I fell in love with Apple mid last year, and bought my first Mac ever mid November of 2005. It was a 20" G5 RevC 2.1ghz iMac w 1.5gb Ram. It's the best computer I've ever seen and used in my life! Amazing! Anyway, I've been working at my parents to get my sister a Mac for school.
    There are 3 options:
    - 1.42 80gb Mac Mini with Superdrive
    - 1.42 80gb Mac Mini with Combodrive and a TFT (non apple)
    - 1.42 14" iBook.
Monique, my sister, would be able to get the first option in March, the second option in April and the third option in June.
She uses my old PC atm, the bulky thing that it is (one way to convince my parents). It's a 1.5ghz 128mb Ram Pentium 4 IBM - load of crap seriously! Anyway, all she uses the computer for is assignments (We'd probbaly get her office over iWork only because she knows how to use office), listening to music, using her 1gb iPod shuffle and to surf and chat online. Now we have just recently got a new 5mp 12xoptical zoom camera and I'm positive she will love iLife shen she realises how good it is with digital life.
What do you suggest to be the better option for my sister? I'm stuck on the portability, or quicker. When we go on holidays I know the iBook would be perfect to download photos and such on the go - seeing as we are taking a 3 week holiday in september, it would be great! I've made a little comparison thingo below:
    - Both small and take up not much room
    - Mac Mini will have to buy apple keyboard - iBook you have it.
    - Mac Mini maybe purchase TFT - iBook you have screen
    - Mac Mini not as portable - iBook is
    - Mac Mini w/o tft approx half the price of iBook
    - Mac Mini w tft is about $200 cheaper than iBook
    - Both can connect wirelessly to our wireless home network (iMac, 2pcs atm)
    - Mac Mini bigger screen
    - My iMac has superdrive so not really need superdrive in Mac Mini. Will save about $100.
What do you think you would go for? I'm not saying I'm going to do what you say, just wondering what other folks would do. I am thinking the iBook.
    Thanks guys!
    - leighton

    Hi Leight,
Your a good brother to be buying your sister an Apple computer. What kind of school does she go to? College? Anyways, I think that the iBook is the best way to go. It is the perfect tool for the average student. I recommend the iBooks for people whose needs fall in the realm of basic computing. I use iLife as a standard for the iBook. She will be doing Word processing (I would hold off on MS Office or iWork because her iBook will come with the trials for both. I bought MS Office, then used iWorks (trial) on my new iBook and I threw the MS Office away.), web browsing (Safari), Music (iTunes), Email (Mail is my favorite), Photos (iPhoto 5 is good for keeping them organized. Her iBook will come with iPhoto 6, which is just truly amazing), messengers (iChat is my favorite, I have everyone from Hotmail to AIM on it. You have to go through Jabber to use Hotmail but I can show you), and she might want watch movies (iMovie). These are all on the iBook as your know, they cover the basic necessities that she would need. I bought my iBook for school purposes only, the "iLifes". I do all my heavy editing and scripting on my iMac, which is more capable. She will love the iBook because she will be able to take it with her where ever she wants. It is so convenient to just carry around with me to class (if the teacher doesn't mind). I would suggest though thinking about buying or recommending to her the following:
Airport Express - I use it in school and when I am traveling. I am not stuck sitting at that awful desk in the corner
iSight - I use it to communicate with friends and family when I am traveling or at school. I find people never relize how great video conferencing is till they try it.
iWork - Even though she knows how to use MS Office, Pages is so much easier and efficient. With Pages there is little to none time wasted struggling to format the document to make it look right. Pages works great with other iLife applications like iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie. I use it all the time for projects, reports, and essays.
AppleCare - A necessity! Even though this will put you back some money, it is worth the cost. If something goes wrong with her iBook she can bring it to any Apple Store and they will fix it. They will fix it for free most times as long as she didn't do anything malicious to it.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS Why don't you ask her what she wants? Surprise her with choices, and then let her decide. That way you will know that you chose the right one for her.

  • Mobile phone bluetooth control on iBook

    hello guys,

It keeps asking me to plug in the device over and over.
I've made sure bluetooth is enabled on the phone but not sure how to check the PC.
Any help, direction or advice offered would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
The M305-S4910 does not have Bluetooth hardware, so that's why the laptop is 'freezing'.  Toshiba sells a USB adapter:

  • All my pictures became unavailable with Pictures!

I recently updated to Yosemite 10.10.3 and as a part of that, I was offered a new app for my pictures, called Pictures. I accepted and my iPhoto app disappeared. Now I am trying to go on with my iBooks Author book, but the photos no longer show up in the media "folder". And it is not possible to drag the photos into the page either. This is a catastrophe. It will cost me so much extra work to drag pictures first to the desktop, before I can drag them into my book. What do I do???

iPhoto is still there - they just removed the icon from your Dock but you'll still find it in your Applications folder. You can go back using that without any problems.
I suspect there may be some damage to your iPhoto Library (it was probably there before, but the switch to Photos may have aggravated it). You'll need to rebuild your iPhoto Library.
Apple needs to update iBooks Author to work with the new Photos app. There have been updates to iTunes and all the iWork apps, but not to iBooks Author yet.  Right now, when iBooks Author should only see your old iPhoto library, even if you're using the new Photos app  - it's like the Photos app doesn't exist. So  I really think the problem is with your iPhoto Library, not the Photos app.

  • Hidden Frames and Stokes in author

Hi- I am thinking that the same hidden frames and strokes available to iwork 09 are available to ibook author. I am still trying to find the support files for author and see if they are there. If not it might be possible to copy them from iwork into author:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090111112648195

OK-here oare my modified plists. They work for me to allow the use of the new frames I hope you find them useful
    1) Right click on the ibook author icon under applications and show package contents
    2) Navigate to Contents:Resources and make a copy of KFGraphicInspectorFrames.plist ; SLGraphicInspectorFrames.plist and KFGraphicInspectorSmartStrokes.plist.
    3) Copy the plists below into your Resources folder.
    4) Close and open author- Your new frames and strokes should be available under inspector.

  • Is the trial version reflective of the real application?

I have downlaoded the trail version and find that the application is VERY SLOW at undertaking commands and not in the same league as the speed of Excel for Mac. Is the poor response time I am experiencing (major) because I am don't have an Intel processor or is it refective of the application that the response time is just pants?

The trial is all the software, no difference. If you buy the CD later just enter the License number, no need to reinstall.
Undo is a feature of the software including Numbers so save regularly if making many changes to lower the memory use. Closing then reopening the program also frees up memory.
I'm using iWork on a PPC G4 iBook without a problem as long as I remember to save often.
Keep playing and have fun with it. There's far more to the software than expected so please give yourself time to learn what is possible.
Last but not least Take off your Word and Excel hat first.

  • I need a recommendation for a good word processor

i have two macs at home which are fully converted to pages and keynote. my family has now fully converted from using clunky office 2004 to iwork. i bought a used ibook g3 for $275 and i thought i could use it for writing essays at school. and its pretty light at 4.9lbs after all (well it's the lightest mac around). i installed iwork thinking it could run smoothly. i found out that when i begin typing, the words take forever to print on the screen. it gets even slower while moving paragraphs around. so now i thought i would have to run word 2k4. that's no problem since i have been used to using word for years. well, as a matter of fact, i can't stand word one bit. pages is just so much better and cleaner, i simply can't take the user interface MS has built. since i am on a 12in screen, the Word window is awkward and clunky. so, i am now thinking of getting appleworks, but that software is older than panther, so i dont know how powerful it really is.
if anyone can recommend me a good app for just writing essays, please tell me. is there a way to make pages run faster, or make word look better? thanks, gabe.
what i am doing now is using word to type and copying everything to pages so it can be formatted better. its pretty slow, annoying but it gets the job done.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
For your G3 iBook, I recommend AppleWorks 6. You should have received the original disks with that iBook & those disks include AppleWorks. If you didn't get them & can't get them from the seller, you could call Apple & ask for a replacement set of original disks. There will be a small charge, but I'd consider it worthwhile just to have a set of the originals. If you want to buy AppleWorks 6, try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • IBook G3 & iWork

I am starting college on Monday and I have a gliding instructor job coming up in the summer. As a result, I have been looking at getting an iBook to make my time more productive and portable. I want it to run Panther and need it to run Microsoft Office 2004 and iWork. With regards to iWork, I only need it to display the presenations through a projector, I can use my eMac for the creating part.
What kind of an iBook should I be looking for on eBay? Minimum iWork system spec requirements are 500MHz G3 and 128mb RAM, is this a fairy tale or realistic minimum system reqs?

eMac G4, 1.25 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   DVD RW combo drive

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
A 500 MHz iBook usually has a 10 GB (actually 9.3 GB), which can really cramp your style.
Also, I would recommend maxing out the RAM with a 512 MB chip which would bring it up to 640 MB (or 576 MB if you happened to get one of the earliest ones with only 64 MB on the logic board).
Actually, if you can see your way to waiting for a week, MacWorld Expo is in San Francisco next week. If new models are announced, you may be able to pick up a new G4 iBook at a nice discount. They are only $999 right now, and if you buy from MacMall they offer a free memory upgrade (you pay an installation fee) and free printer and bag (after rebates). This may decline substantially if new models are announced at MacWorld on Tuesday.
A 500 MHz iBook is nearly a 5-year-old model. It was manufactured two years before Panther was released and three years before MS Office 2004. If you can find one that has at least a 20 GB hard drive, it may work all right for you if you upgrade the RAM, but it won't be nearly as nice as a newer model.
There's another thing to consider. Do you want wireless connectivity? If so, and you still want to go with a G3 iBook, you probably need to hunt for one with the AirPort card already installed because the newer (faster and cheaper) AirPort Extreme card won't work in the G3 iBooks (but does work in all G4 iBooks). Apple no longer sells the original AirPort card that works in a G3 iBook, and they are getting scarce (and expensive).
You may also want to consider the fact that iBook G3 (Dual USB) computers have had some problems with the logic board. Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. The program covers G3 (Dual USB) iBooks that are less than three years old. If you are buying one that is older than that, you need to be a bit wary because someone may be trying to get rid of one with a bad logic board.
The average lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years, so you need to think about the cost of a replacement battery if you are going to want to use it on battery power (or buy one whose battery has been replaced recently).
I hope you find what you're looking for. We have three used iBooks, ourselves, and really enjoy them a lot. But I paid over $1000 for my first 500 MHz iBook (used--on eBay--640 MB of RAM, AirPort card installed, Combo drive) in the fall of 2002, so that $999 for a new one (AirPort Extreme is included in the new ones) is looking very good to me. And you would get Tiger with it, too.

  • External Hyperlink behavior in iBooks ePub created with iWork Pages

I am new at ePup publishing. I'm  using iWork pages and exporting to ePub.  Things were going great until........
I started playing with the hyperlinks in my ePub book in iBooks. I am doing this with an iPad and an iPod Touch. I'm in iBooks, I click on the link, the Safari browser opens and displays the page.  As far as I know, I have to close the browser window to get back to the book. I do this by pressing the home button on the device. Now I have a blank screen. I have to open iBooks again to get back to the book.
This is a bunch of work for the reader of my book, I want them to see a bunch of images. this is awful. It is not acceptable.
Is this an ePub problem or an iBook reader problem? My guess is iBooks but I'm not sure
The system should have the facility to look at the external page within iBooks and press an X button to close it so the reader can continue reading.
So now I'm thinking I will need to go back and insert all the images in my book.  I think I will proceed to do this once I know for sure there is no better course of action.
Smart and knowledgeable people, please tell me, is there a better way to let my reader see images without a bunch of button pressing?

iBooks only syncs purchased books. Others must be synced in iTunes.

  • Bought iwork ('05) for ibook; now new macbook won't let me register it

    would appreciate help:
bought '05 iworks, made several syllabi via pages (not the newest pages 2 found in newer 06 iworks that came as trial on my macbook), but now
am being told when i try to register/install my iworks '05 that my key is invalid; as a result, since trial time for iworks ;06 is over, i have to buy new key code, OR only open syllabi without capacity to save in pdf form (to send it out for job applications, etc.)!
i have attempted to reinstall older iworks again; have dumped new trial iworks '6 (what could i do? was thinking it was overriding '05 version, and i can't very well spend another 80 buying new version -- student loans only go so far, right??) looked for update for original pages (WHERE IS IT??) on apple site, but no luck. please help.
    m.

Do you still have the old iBook available with iWorks '05 installed/registered?
If so, then I think you could use the Migration Assistant to transfer your old apps. All you need is a firewire cable... search your mac's help section for "migration assistant".
Also, why do you need the updater for Pages 1.0 if you can't even get it to register from the install disk? Anyway, I think this might be the updater you need:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/pages102.html
If by chance you CAN get 1.0 installed and registered, then I think you should be able to update it by simply running the software update application.

  • Can one install iWork on both iMac and an iBook?

    Hi,
I recently bought an iMac with iWork pre-installed in it. Can I use the installation CD for iWork that came with the package to install a copy of the software on my iBook (with Tiger running on it) as well?

Yes, licensing terms is the only difference between the two. And technically, the "Family" license extends only to up to 5 users living within the same household and is not to be used for business. Here is the quote from Apple:
"The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household. By “household” we mean a person or persons sharing the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or condominium. This license does not extend to students who reside at a separate on-campus location or to business or commercial users."
