Jasonneuerburg1's D800 question
Re: this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1053666
Can somebody please tell me what the take-away message of this thread is?
I have no idea what relevance there is to the original question in linking to a thread primarily arguing about the numbering convention Nikon uses for its SDKs, and then locking the later thread as if the question has been answered...
Exactly, Hal - I asked Jason if he was talking about tethering, explained why that might be his problem, and then the thread was locked and I was pointed at what seems to be a largely irrelevant thread (one that'd I'd been involved in, too).
Glad I'm not the only one that's baffled - I hope Jason doesn't take the the locking personally!
(Just for clarity, I know what Live View is - my Canons have it too - but that normal use of the phrase didn't really make sense in the context of the rest of the question).

Photoshop 5 won't recognize Raw photos downloaded from nikon D800!!!
Downloaded latest iPhoto. Running Show Leopard. Worked for 3 days then crashed i.e. can't edit RAW in CS5 or 5.1. Can't find camera raw update for Nkon D800.
Questions about Photoshop need to go to the Adobe site - they're the folks who make Photoshop.

Would like to purchase PSE 12 to process Camera Raw files for the following cameras: Nikon D800, Nikon DF, Canon G9 and Pentax K-3 does the Raw Converter that comes with PSE 12 when purchased recognize the cameras listed in the question or do I need to download the camera Raw Version 8.3 ?
While the G9 RAW files can be read by Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom, these file are unsupported at this time. Here is a link to Adobe's latest list of cameras that are supported and this list came out yesterday http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
I have not done a comparison between Lightroom and Canon's software but others have and say that Canon's software is clearly better. I am sure when Adobe updates their software again to include the G9 it will be a very good RAW converter as it is will most other cameras. -
Nikon D800 Users: A Preview Question
This problem I'll describe does not affect my Nikon D600 imports, only D800 imports.
When importing files and looking at the previews, vertically oriented images are presented as landscape oriented previews.
This was happening with LR v4.4. I was hoping that the upgrade to LR v5.3 might fix this annoyance, but it does not.
As stated above, D600 vertical images display as a correctly oriented portait image, but not this D800.
Portait oriented images do display as they should when reviewing them on the D800 LCD.
I'll assume that I'm missing something, as a search didn't indicate other D800 users are having the preview problem that I've described.
D800 users- Can you lend a bit of help here?
ThanksI suppose that's possible. But this should be nothing more than a metadata tag in the file. All I can say is that it works as advertised here (I'm on 7).
Perhaps the orientation sensor is broken in your D800 copy?
Or maybe Lightroom reads that tag off DNGs (which is what I have) but not for some reason D800 NEFs? (the DNG conversion copys all metadata even if isn't used in Lightroom). -
HELP FAST! Need to go to my wedding-Lightroom 4 does not recognize Nikon D800 files
I try to import my d800 nef files and Lightroom does not recognize them and will not import. I looked on the site and it SAYS it supports them but nothing. I looked for a raw plugin but when I clicked the link it would not go anywhere. HELP! I don't want to shoot my wedding with this camera if LR can't support it and I have to return it to the camera store FAST if not.

Nikon D 800 is supported in the latest realease of camera raw. Make sure that you update the software to the latest version or download and install the latest version of Camera Raw 6.7 from the Adobe website.
But the question is about Lightroom. And Lightroom doesn't use any version of ACR. Lightroom 4 is somewhat compatible with ACR 6.7, and fully compatible with ACR 7.x. ACR 6.7 will read Lightroom 4 adjustments when an image is transferred to Photoshop, but it will not provide access to process 2012 sliders in ACR. -
Has anyone solved their LR4 / Nikon D800 RAW NEF issues?
I've done a lot of reading on this topic and think I have a handle on how easily the new D800 NEF files can be corrupted by the older versions of Nikon Transfer.
When I began using the camera I accidently made the mistake of corrupting them and haven't had any issues since... until yesterday.
I photographed last night, and imported about 160 RAW NEF files onto my brand new Macbook Pro with Retina for a same day preview for the host. I transfered the images using ViewNX2 & by association it's built-in Nikon Transfer 2 utility. I used the built in SD Card reader on the Macbook which has always worked in the past. But alas!!!!! While they imported fine, LR4 can't import them and gives me the error "Preview Unavailable at this Time". I should note... Nikon Transfer 2 was set to clear the card after the transfer .
Nikon ViewNX2 can see the images and I'd hoped to fix the issue by just converting them to JPEG's but, no bueno. It tells me it can't. This is the precise issue I can into when I accidently used the original version months ago on my iMac. But it's impossible that I have the old version on this unit. It's less than a month old and I'd downloaded the most recent version from Nikon. So I'm running under the assumption that the file is somehow corrupted.
I've seen a lot of people running into issues getting used to the new workflow requied to deal with these enormous RAW's.
Here's the all important question. After the files have an issue... is there anyway to recover them??? I can't retake them, the original shots were wiped from the card. So what do I do? At least Nikon View can see them, so I have to believe that there is some image information there.
Has anyone sucessfully fixed the issue?
Going forward I plan to just import everything directly through LR4, so I think that'll aliviate future heartburn... but what's my "undo" solution?
I know there's a lot that's been written on this topic and really appriciate the support!
-JaredWhat Bob Frost just posted (after fixing the hidden http// part of the URL) worked for the image you uploaded, so try that:
http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
BTW, I answered 14 to the bit-depth-12-or-14 question the utility asked, and it worked ok on the example corrupted NEF.
Below is what I was typing up and testing before posting, and works to extract the embedded JPG Preview, but does not actually fix the corrupted NEFs, which is a better solution. I am including it, below, for reference in case someone without corrupted NEFs also wants to extract JPGs from their raw files. It uses the same tool from Phil Harvey without his customizations to work specifically with corrupted NEFs.
== Original Message ==
The raw data in the NEF you uploaded appears corrupted or otherwise unusable because when viewing in Windows Explorer using the latest Nikon NEF Codec that supports the D800, all I see is a small thumbnail then black with a few parts of color, however for that one file, at least, the embedded JPG preview is intact, and 7360 x 4912 in size, enough to see the camera-shake blur.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9905000/JBR_20120910_175757.jpg
I’m on a PC and you’re on a Mac but the same tool is available - exiftool a command-line program you run in terminal (on a Mac) or in a Command Prompt window on a PC:
http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
If what you download includes a (-k) then remove it by renaming before attempting to run the command, below. On Windows I would rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe without the (–k) part. The (-k) tells exiftool to display the exif information by default if you drag-and-drop to it. While this is normally useful, for the purpose of extracting JPGs from NEFs this might be confusing so I’m suggesting to rename the executable before using it.
Here is the command-line to extract the fullsize JPG from the NEFs and then copy the metadata tags from the NEF to the newly written JPG:
.\exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw -w %d%f_%ue.jpg -execute -tagsfromfile @ -srcfile %d%f_%ue.jpg -overwrite_original -common_args --ext jpg .
The above command assumes both the exiftool executable and all the NEFs are in the current folder. The current folder is designated by a single period both at the very beginning and the very end of the command-line. If exiftool is in a different folder, then supply that path instead of the initial period, and if the NEFs are in a different folder, substitute that folder-name for the final period. The final period has a space separating it from the preceding –ext jpg.
It is also assumed that only NEFs and the executable are in the current folder. If there are other files, they may confuse things so you might want to move things to a temporary working folder, and I’d suggest working with a copy of the NEFs just in case something goes haywire, you’re not overwriting the originals, corrupt as they may be.
For reference, the above command-line was simplified from a more complex example that didn’t quite work with your file, one that conditionally extracts either the full-size JPG or the tiny JPG-thumbnail. The example is the last one in the Copying Examples section, here:

Solaris 10 x86 X configuration for Dell D800 laptop
I installed solaris 10 on my Dell Latitude D800 laptop (it is listed on the BigAdmin HCL for Solaris 10). After installation resolution was low (probably 640x480). I searched web and found some info
on web for a Linux configuration and used that as
guideline to setup xorg.conf (using xorgconfig utility).
I used following setting :
Protocol ExplorerPS/2
Device /dev/kdmouse
Video 1024x768 @ 70 Hz
HorizSync 31.5-57.0
VertRefresh 50-70
With this setting, initial login screen doesn't fit the
display. If I checkin, server starts and display is OK,
but mouse control is erratic (can't properly place/move around mouse). The mouse suddenly
wraps around from middle of the screen.
I tried enabling/disabling emulate3 button,
virtual display, depth and limited max resolution to
1024x768 . None of this helps, very difficult to
start a window even hard to exit out X windows,
since mouse doesn't behave properly.
I also have a USB mouse (logitech optical mosue,
with a wheel : part no M-BJ58). USB mouse support
might already be there but not sure what the
protocol/device would be.
Does anyone have a sample xorg.conf file for
Dell D800 running Solaris 10 ? Any idea what I need
to do ?When logging in, log in to command line, su to root, then run /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig and answer the questions about your hardware. This will make an xorg.conf file and save it to /etc/X11.Try using a mouse setting of auto, I had to do this as IMPS/2 just sent my mouse haywire.

Conflict with Nikon D800 and CS6
I have been having an issue with files from my D800 when opening them in Photoshop CS6. I should note that this issue has never been a problem with any other camera that I have owned and used with CS6 (D3200, D7000, D80, Kodak Pro SLR N, Hasselblad H3D).
When attempting to open a number of files, ONLY from the D800, I seem to be limited to 10 or 11 files max. Once it loads that quantity I get an error message that it is out of resources. I had chalked it up to the tif files that I typically work with being 16-bit files at a little over 200MB each just being too large to open in any higher quantity.
Last evening I shot a graduation party for a friend and had inadvertently set the camera to shoot "basic" (lowest possible quality) jpg's at a file size of about 3MB each (still 7830 X 4912px). When I tried to load them into photoshop to do some dust clean-up and a few minor tweaks I was surprised to find that it still would only open 10 files before giving me the same error message.
Has anyone else had this issue? If so, I would appreciate hearing how you may have adjusted settings in either the camera or in CS6 to resolve this issue. Again, it has never been an issue with any other camera I have used, and the Hassy is 39MP so file size shouldn't be the problem. It seems to be something in conflict between photoshop and files from that specific camera. To further elaborate and head off the next question, yes, this seems to happen with other D800's as well as I have rented a couple of others while this one was at Nikon for warranty repair and those cameras had the same issue with CS6.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.Noel, here is the information for you. Hopefully it's helpful.

RAW (NEF) file for NIKON D800
My Lr3 is not reading NIKO NEF (RAW) file after I updated the software. WHen will you be releasing NIKON RAW for D800?
Take a look at this thread:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4421782#4421782
Your question is answered there.
John -
ACR 7.0 in Released version of CS6 doesn't open Nikon D800 raw files.
The ACR 7.0 that installs with rhe released version of Photoshop CS6 still won't open Nikon d800 raw files.
Noel - I do use a card reader and always have! I don't go direct from the camera. As I point out, I am working around the problems that are stated above and I am here forcing myself to learn by asking those questions. Thanks though. I’m not ignoring anyone if I were I wouldn’t have all the comments above.
Jeff - I mentioned that I'm a teacher and need to know what I'm doing with the software. Sorry for the attitude.
I am an artist before a teacher it’s just that I like to be proficient when I teach (google me).
Why do you feel such animosity towards education? I’m really sorry I posted here at all.

I am equally as surprised and not blaming LR4 just making an observation. I have used LR for years and manage a library of over 60,000 images with it. It is my software of choice and will continue to be. But this has become a persistent problem only with the D800 14bit NEF +- 45MB files, all other files from my Nikon DX cameras and my Canon cameras are fine. I’m not blaming LR4 it could also be the Nikon NEF, I just don’t know why LR4 truncates the D800 files and other software doesn’t.
- if I move files using Nikon ViewNX 2 or Windows7 Explorer the files simply move without problem. When I move them using LR4 they become truncated (no end of file error message). If I move them with LR4 and then copy over them into the new folder with the original copy, LR4 corrects and is able to deal with the file in their new destination. (this means a lot of extra work and saving the originals in another directory LR4 doesn’t see).
It's confusing. I have reinstalled LR4 3 times already and checked the hard disks. The bottom line is that both Windows and ViewNX will move the file without altercation. I don’t know why? Yet further confusion. Please realize that I am aware this may be an isolated issue and I intend to ask one of the college techs. to look at the problem.
I am not attacking Adobe, I only use Adobe products with my images and I want it to work that’s why I came here in the first place. I have a lot of money invested in Adobe software both here and all our other licences. Please stop using words like blame, reporting an issue is not blaming. Don’t shoot me I’m just conveying my current (personal) experiences with the product. I’m trying to figure out why and how to make it work.
This is my last post on this thread. Thanks a lot for all your help. I remain a faithful Adobe client and appreciative of all your kind remarks and assistance above. -

How can I find Nikon D800 in PS CS5 lens correction filter?
How can I find Nikon D800 in PS CS5 lens correction filter? I have version 12.0.4 and Camera Raw 6.7.0.339.
I see your question and wondered about it.
This is assuming that you know that in addition to the 18-55 issued with D3000's that there are other lenses in which to invest and with which to exploire.....
Using a D800 and CC PS 14.2.1 x64 and latest Camera Raw 8.4.1.200 I opened the lens correction filters.
There are lens correction tools in Raw for which no body selection is offered, just lens types. Which lens are you using?
In CC PS (Upgraded from PS5 or PS6 to CreativeCloud ("CC") PS with nice2 year discount offer from Adobe) there is a separate lens correction filter tool:
Options/settings
Manufacturer: NIKON
Model Options do not include D800 at this time
(Options D3, D300s, D3X, D4, & D700) Only the D300s is a crop frame CCD here as opposed to full frame 3, 4, 700, or our 800s. I would not set the model to any known crop frame (APS-C size CCD)
Searching adobe forums, it appears that camera body specific entries are only added for known problems.
Leaving the model set to Nikon (as opposed to all) allows for selection of specific lenses for a very broad gamut including grails like the OTUS.
I am guessing that there is no identified lens/camera-body specific peculiarity requiring a specific entry for the D800. This is something to watch over time and possibly to ask Adobe Directly.
I am now piqued to know. -

A few points for clarity please. Getting on quite well with my new Apple adventure; my IPad being my only Apple equipment.
Downloading from my D800 via cable no problems but can only see the jpg files and yes I shoot jpg fine large and nef
Question? Does the IPad download the nef files automatically?
If YES.... How do I see them cos currently I am not?
If NO.... I doubt that I would buy an ap to view as my nef files are kept for only one reason for that one in a million shot that needs to be blown up in size and would use husband's computer for that.
Which is the best ap to manage photos in? I do not do a lot of editing. Straightening, cropping is about my limit.....what I take is what I get! I take my shots manual and work my camera to the maximum to get what I want and my delete button works well. What I do like to do is manage my files. Any suggestions on a good ap that might suit me please.
Was a little disappointed to find that I could not back up to an external hard drive from the IPad but have got over that. Have decided whilst travelling to do the following:
Take photos... Nightly download to IPad via cord.....when flash card full....remove from camera (check all on IPad)......and keep the flash card as back up and use new flash card etc. In the past I used to copy to external hard drive or USB sticks. Do you have any other suggestions? (I have not bought the flash card reader as my husband's D200 has a different size card). (For D800 dudes I use my second card for overflow not backup....personal choice may change this if go to bigger cards)
I have a Samsung S3 phone ..... Saves the photos in a DCIM folder and are jpg files. In a previous discussion I was under impression IPad would read files, however, not the case. Can you offer any hope here please? Do you know of an ap etc? (I can see what my next phone will be!)
Appreciate your help. Just want to make sure I have myself organised. We are off to Italy shortly on a much awaited holiday ..... Taking the IPad instead of the non Apple laptop/netbook has been a bit of a sore point....mmmmm!

Cheers, Tom -
I always shoot in RAW. Sometimes I have Auto-ISO turned off (to keep my D800 from choosing an unnecessarily high ISO when using flash) or the focus point lighting results in a low light photo that is darker than it would be if I had set things up correctly. But often I can simply increase the Exposure, via that slider, and a few other things that rescue the photo. How do I examine two photos where one has been so rescued, and the other shot with appropriate ISO that from an overall view look equivalent to see what the difference is? Or must I set up a test to speicifically allow for that comparison.
Just a curiosity question, and not to relieve of the responsibility to get the settings right.
ErnieErnie,
To answer your second question would require someone with more detailed knowledge of the code then I have. Hopefully someone here will be able to give some insight.
The answer to your first question at least for me is to use the lowest possible ISO I can at all times. I believe it is as important as ever to get the best possible image in the camera. By starting with this image in post processing I'll have the widest latitude to make whatever modifications I want to to the image.
I think for you to answer that question would require some experimentation. Expose a scene under consistent lighting at different combinations of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and see which look best. How high can you push the ISO for your camera/post production setup before the noise becomes a factor for you.
I don;t think there can be any rules to follow here, its going to be dependent on each photographer and the equipment they have.
