Java(TM) Update (1.4.2_02-b03) cannot be installed on this machine...

I am able to install the 1.4.2_02-b03 JRE package on Windows 2000 Pro (SP4).
However, the 1.4.2_02-b03 SDK package does not install: some way through the process (the file copy stage) a modal dialog is displayed ("Warning - Java(TM) Update
Java(TM) Update (1.4.2_02-b03) cannot be installed on this machine because the Java(TM) Virtual Machine is currently running.
Please close all running Java(TM) applications, especially browsers.
Retry Cancel
---------------------------") and when Cancel is clicked, the main MSI installer program displays an Error 1722 modal dialog ("A program failed to execute blah blah...") and the MSI program announces installation has failed, nothing has been installed, and so on.
The MSI log in the temp directory displays "Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action patchsdk, location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Update\Base Images\j2sdk1.4.2-b28\patch-j2sdk1.4.2_02-b03\patchsdk.exe, command: -s "C:\Programs\Java\SDK\"
=== Logging stopped: 06/11/2003 23:53:02 ===
Examination of the installation directory (C:\Programs\Java\SDK in my case) shows that program files have been copied (and it looks complete), but the Java applet in the Control Panel does not show that the JRE in the SDK directory has been registered as a JRE choice (normally it is in the drop-down list of available JREs).
So what can I do? Both 1.4.2_01 SDK and 1.4.2_02 SDK show this problem; 1.4.2 (FCS) does not. The problem also occurs with the IFTW installers.

I think I found a <fix> for this. I was having the exact same problems on 10 different WinXP and Win2k machines. I found a couple things may help on some systems. Try installing the following updates:
WinXP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=322913
Win2k: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/q322913/default.asp
You may have better luck installing 1.4.2 after installing these patches. I did on SOME systems. Otherwise, when installing 1.4.2 and you come to the point where it asks you to "Retry" or "Cancel" just keep on clicking on "Retry" until it installs successfully. Sometimes this may take 50 times sometimes once. But it will install.
Sometimes I found that if I opened taskmanager, then close it, clicking Retry would work after that point.
The moral is: Just keep clicking Retry!

  • "Mac OS X Server 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine"

    Hello,
I got this message "Mac OS X Server 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine" when i was trying to install the Mac os x server on a Macbook Pro. The Macbook pro has 4GB memory and a intel 2.2 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo.
I understand that the min requirements was an intel processor and 2GB RAM?
So anybody know why it won't install on my macbook pro?
    TIA

It's not officially supported, but it will install. That's probably not the problem here.
FWIW, Last time I tried this with SLS, the install balked, and I didn't bother wiping the disk to install it.

  • "10.4 cannot be installed on this machine?"

I'm currently running 10.4.7 on my macbookpro. To make a long story short, I was partitioning my hard drive using bootcamp when I get the error message saying basically, "can't verify hard disk. run off your installation cd and repair disk."
I get into problems when I try to run off my tiger CD. I have a total of three tiger CDs of different versions (10.4 retail, 10.4.6 that came with my MBP, and a 10.4.7 version that was mailed to me from ADC). I've tried them all, and each time I get the message, "MAC OSx cannot be installed on this machine."
I can't restart holding C either. Anybody know what's going on? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Horn,
the problems are evident for the 10.4 retail: There is no retail version of Tiger for Intel Macs. Retail versions are PPC only. Also check the 10.4.7 DVD. It might be a PPC-version as well.
However, you SHOULD be able to boot from the software restore DVD that came with your MBP, so calling AppleCare is definitely a good idea.

  • 9.2.2 Update "cannot be installed over this localized copy..."

My Pismo G3 PowerBook came with OS 9.0.4 disks, which I have used to do a clean install. (The reason why is a long story.) Then I downloaded 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates in the same session from apple.com. The 9.1 and 9.2.1 updates have been installed successfully. Now the 9.2.2 update produces an error message: "This software cannot be installed over this localized copy of Mac OS".
I plan to install OSX 10.2.8 as well as having Classic once I get past this barrier, but how do I get any further?
PowerBook   Mac OS 9.2.x   G3 Pismo

Yes, Don, I had a similar thought about US English vs International English after I posted the question, based on a recent similar problem arising while re-installing AppleWorks 6.2.8 on a friend's computer. Last night (in Australia) I made sure that I downloaded the International English version onto my G4 laptop. After one faulty CD burn, OS 9.2.2 is now installed on the Pismo. This may be the first time ever that I have actually had 9.2.2 on the Pismo in around 5 years of ownership: previously I had given up the issue as too hard. So I am very happy and thank you for your confirmation of the approach.
As for the ZI prefix: well I never! Not in at those 5 years of ownership have I worked out or read or heard what ZI stands for! Your advice opens up a whole new world of understanding!
Another well deserved 10 points to the OS9-meister!

That message is returned when the language version of
the download updater does not match the language of
the installed version of OS 9. The download updater
must match in order for it to run.
Typically this happens when trying to use the North
American English version of the update on top of an
International English version of the OS, or vice
    versa.
If you're not sure which language version you have on
the machine now, open About This Computer (top of
Apple menu when Finder is active). Check the info
line labelled "Version:" - the language version is
indicated on that line. For example, if the info on
that line is something like "Mac OS (Z1) 9.2.1", the
    "(Z1)" portion indicates it is International English;
other languages have other codes (D = German, E =
Spanish, etc.). If there is no code, it is North
    American English.

  • OS X 10.8.1 update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

    HI
I had installed mountain lion on my MBP 13" early 2012, but it has lots of issue, when i tryed to up date to 10.8.1 it shows the error "OS X update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update"
if i run the software update nothis is showing, current os version is 10.8

This did not work for me.
Note, that at one point the Apple developer knew exactly what the problem was and decided not to let us know. If we were tole what the problem was we woud have an idea of how to proceed.

  • This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer. Why Not. Mac Mini has the required spec.

    Hi...
I hope that you can help me!!
I am trying to update a recently purchased pre-owned Mac Mini to OSX Lion. ATM it is running OSX 10.6.8, with 2GHz Core 2 duo processor, and 2GB of DDR2 SD RAM. There is 30+ GB of hard drive available. The App Store has acknowledged the fact that I have previously bought OSX Lion, but when I try to download, it displays the following, "This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer." It meets the required specs. Help!! How can I upgrade....

What model is it? There are some early Intel minis around that have had CPU upgrades. They can't run Lion, at least not without hacking.

  • "This software cannot be instaled on this computer."

I am attempting to install tiger onto a Macbook Pro. These are the install disks that came with the mac, but it says that they cannot be installed on this computer. Any Ideas?

    Mac Os version 10.4.10
    AHT version 3A124
    Disk version 1.2

I seems to be a serious problem to install tiger on brand new allu imacs or macbooks pro. I spent two afternoons working with two different apple care experts without getting a satisfactory solution. They will let me know a solution soon!!!
The closest you can get is the following: 1) partition the HD of the allu imac using leopard tools, 2) start the allu imac using target modus, 3) connect an white intel based imac and allu imac with firewire cable, 4) start the white imac and install in the tiger partition os x tiger -at least 10.4.7; 5) restart the allu imac with the alt key and the tiger volume; 6) install imac software update 1.2.1 (tiger); 7) upgrade to 10..4.11.
That is the far you can go. The drawback is, you can use only airport in your network, the built-in ethernet interface cannot be configured. May be, this can help you in the meantime.

I am having the same problem. Windows is trying to install. It identifies the various partitions but says that I cannot install Windows on the Boot Camp partition or any other. I select Drive options (advanced) and Format the Boot Camp drive, but it makes no difference.
    This is the Windows error:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer BIOS menu.
I am not sure what Csound1 is suggesting with that post above. There are some involved suggestions over here <https://discussions.apple.com/message/23548999#23548999> about using Disk Utility to delete the Boot Camp partition and create new ones - is that the idea?

  • "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer" Error

    What Mac/Specs:
I am trying to completely clear out and reformat a 13" MacBook Pro 2.26Ghz with the 250GB hard drive (mid-2010 version) which had been running Mountain Lion to its "factory" settings.
    Hurdle 1:
When I tried to reformat it I had the erase/partition options greyed out.  Duh- needed to use a different start up disk.
    Actions taken & Hurdle 2:
I then inserted the original disk (with OSX10.6) and started up with the C key held down but ended up getting the above error message "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer".
    Actions taken 2:
I tried to "backup from Time Machine" (as that was the only option I could click other than restarting) and managed to access the Disk Utillity that way.  I was then able to erase and re-partition the drive as Mac Extended Journaled and made sure that the S.M.A.R.T. verification was verified before I did so.
    Hurdle 3 (= Hurdle 2):
This got me to the point of having a clean slate but the error message persists.
    Question:
What can I do to move forward?  I do not want to reinstall Mountain Lion, I want to pass on the computer restored to its original factory settings.
    Please and thank you.

Sorry for the late update- I ended up checking the disks (I have two MacBook Pros bought two months apart) and tried the other one.  Turns out that though they were the same OSX (10.6.3 v1) they had different teeny serial numbers.
To answer BDAqua-  yes, it was the disk for the same MacBook Pro model but clearly not "same" enough.  And no- the disks had never been used.  Pleased to report that it is all sorted now, but wanted to thank you massively for your answer anyway.
    You had it in one!

  • "iCal software cannot be installed on this computer"...why?

I deleted iCal a few months ago because there was something strange going on with it and I figured I'd just redownload it. Well, last week I finally got around to it and it keeps saying "iCal software cannot be installed on this computer." My software is all up to date so I'm about to pull out my hair in the process of figuring our why the heck it's saying that.
Does anyone have ideas of why this could be? Or should I just bring my computer in to my Apple store and have them figure it out?
Thanks so much for any help!!

    Lauren Beth,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
