JPEG color shifts occur when viewed in different programs

Hi All,
I'm having difficulty exporting JPEG documents that display consistently between programs.  Windows image viewer and Microsoft Office shift colors drastically when my exported images are viewed within them.
What's going on here?  I'm exporting as a maximum quality JPEG and have tried a number of color profile settings when saving the documents.  Embedded Color Profile, Convert to sRGB, etc.

If the image has been converted to sRGB and saved with the profile embedded but is displayed inconsistently then I suppose there might be a problem with the screen profile but otherwise the problem would lie with the other applications’ missing or imprudent Color Management (policies).

The Reset feature adds a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data. I recommend hanging onto that for a few weeks in case you discover something essential that the Reset feature left behind.

  • Color shift (lightening) when using "Save for Web & Devices..."

Can someone please let me know why I'm getting a color shift (the entire image lightens noticably) when I export an image or animated gif with "Save for Web & Devices...". It happens on PCs and Macs, and with both CS3 and CS2.
I've been using this feature (flawlessly until a few months ago) long enough to realize that there are several settings to adjust the color table, dithering, web snap, etc., but adjusting these settings don't seem to fix the problem. When I use "Save As..." the color shift doesn't occur, and that's been my workaround, but I'm currently trying to save a few animated gifs, which must be saved with "Save for Web & Devices..." in order to retain the animation.
    Please help!! Many thanks.

Ah ha! I thought so. The only reason I can speak on this topic at all is because of what I was forced to learn when I started using a Dell LCD flatscreen.
As mentioned earlier, most monitors are pretty close to sRGB, which made web work somewhat easier. However, it seems recently some so-called "wide gamut" monitors have come to market, including the recent crop of Dells. The new Dells can produce a gamut that is closer to Adobe RGB than sRGB. This means -- speaking loosely -- it can produce brighter and more saturated colours than an "sRGB" type monitor.
RGB numbers, in the context of a defined colour space, represent an "actual" real life colour. A very bright red in sRGB colour space may be represented by r255b0g0, but that same "actual" red colour is represented in the wider Adobe RGB colour space by r219b0g0. Adobe RGB, being wider than sRGB, can include still brighter reds than sRGB's brightest red, hence where sRGB hits a roof at r255, Adobe RGB can keep going higher.
Imagine two ladders, each with ten steps on it. The Adobe RGB ladder is taller than the sRGB ladder, even though they both have ten steps. The 9th step is higher (i.e. brighter) on the Adobe RGB ladder than on the sRGB ladder. So if an image contains the RGB values of r219b0g0, well if you assign it to sRGB, it will not be a very bright red. If you assign it to Adobe RGB, it will be a brighter red, because that "ladder step" (like the 9th step) is higher than the same step in sRGB.
This is why your image appears brighter when viewed in SFW and in web browsers. Photoshop knows it's supposed to be using sRGB colour space, but SFW and web browsers DOESN'T, and so it just assigns your monitor colour space, which with these Dell monitors is wider than sRGB.
I think the Dell monitor is fine...I still highly recommend purchasing some type of hardware calibration utitily (one that has a thingy that attaches to the screen to measure the light being emitted). Properly calibrate and profile your monitor, trust what you see in Photoshop, convert to sRGB for web images, and forget the rest. Either way, your images will look "good" on some people's monitors and "bad" on others.

  • SRGB jpeg color shift upon import to Lightroom

    Hi all,
I've tried to do enough reading to ask and intelligent question, so here goes:
I have sRGB jpegs I shot on a Nikon D80. When I import them to Lightroom, there is a color shift (as compared to the camera LCD). If I open the jpegs in Photoshop (using the embedded profile, ie. sRGB), open the jpegs in Photoshop and assign ProPhoto as the color space, or open the jpegs in Firefox, there is no color shift.
Question #1 - Why is there a shift in LR?
Question #2 - The LR (Melissa) color space is often described as "ProPhoto with a sRGB tone curve". I've not seen the mention of a tone curve in reference to sRGB or aRGB color spaces. What is it?
Question #3 - When an image with an embedded profile is imported into LR, is is always assigned to the ProPhoto space, or would it be displayed in its native color space, and only assiged to ProPhoto upon editing?
    Thanks,
    Michael.

Reading your question, there are a few things that really worry me. First off, Lightroom assumes images with no profile to be in sRGB, second when the image has a profile or a profile tag (such as your D80 writes) it will honor the tag. You should completely forget about the internal working space in Lightroom. It is irrelevant. The way color management in Lightroom works is the following, you take an image in its source profile which defines the colors in absolute terms, render it into the working space (linear prophotoRGB) using the source profile, which does NOT change the color, and then convert to the monitor profile for display. This is how every color managed program does it. Some skip the working space step. This means that the working space, as long as it is wide enough, does not matter for the display.
    >open the jpegs in Photoshop and assign ProPhoto as the color space
And this is extremely worrisome. You should NOT assign prophotoRGB to your image. You should leave it in its embedded space, or
convert to the working space. In general leave it in its embedded space. Your photoshop settings should be as the first image in this old post: http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2007/12/mildly-lightroom-workflow-for-printing.html . If you need to assign prophotoRGB to your image to make it appear right, implies that your monitor profile is messed up majorly.
    >open the jpegs in Firefox, there is no color shift
Firefox normally does not color manage, so it always lies to you. Only when you enable tyhe secret setting will it not lie to you (provided the monitor profile is good). See here on how to enable color management in Firefox: http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2008/06/firefox-30-released.html
    >Question #1 - Why is there a shift in LR?
On a good calibrated monitor the shift should be minor. There is a shift because of color management. The displays on Nikons are good, but you cannot trust them in absolute colorimetric sense. Your shift sounds much larger than normal, which is why we think the monitor profile is probably bad.
    >Question #2 - The LR (Melissa) color space is often described as "ProPhoto with a sRGB tone curve". I've not seen the mention of a tone curve in reference to sRGB or aRGB color spaces. What is it?
Again, don't worry about the color space. It is not important but for knowing that it is wide enough to handle anything you throw at it. Lightroom internally uses a color space that is 16 bits and linear and has the primaries of prophotoRGB. It does NOT use a tone curve. For its histogram display and the percentage displays, it applies a sRGB tone curve to the data, so that not everything clusters on one side of the histogram. This is only done for those two displays! Lightroom works in a linear space for everything else. A good document on this was written up by Andrew Rodney a while ago: http://www.ppmag.com/reviews/200701_rodneycm.pdf . I discuss the tone curve here: http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2008/06/srgb-tone-curve-and-lightroom-color.html
    >Question #3 - When an image with an embedded profile is imported into LR, is is always assigned to the ProPhoto space, or would it be displayed in its native color space, and only assiged to ProPhoto upon editing?
Explained above. When you're working in Develop, the image is
converted to the internal color space using the embedded profile, any edits are applied, and then it is converted to the monitor profile before display. The step in between is immaterial. It even happens in 16-bit precision to avoid obvious bit steps. In the Library module the situation is slightly different because previews that are generated from your file are used, but the result is exactly the same. There is NEVER any color space assigned to your images, except when the original files have no profile. In that case sRGB is assigned.

  • After editing camera raw and export as jpeg, image becomes overexposed when view on light room..please advise.

need some help here. don't know if i can describe this accurately.
i was using lightroom previously. edit my raw file and then export in jpeg. everything appear normal as what i wanted.
recently i got cs4 and started using bridge. now after i edit my photo in lightroom and export, the view of the jpeg file appears overexpose(exposure was increase) and when view on adobe bridge same problem. but if i open photoshop and use my workspace colour setting everything is ok. when i see my picture on iphoto it is normal as per i have edited. i just don't know what setting i have touch that cause my viewing of edited photo on lightroom and bridge goes overexpose. on bridge, thumbnail ok but preview bad...
for the record: i just install CS4 and snow leopard recently. before this i have no problems with LR. I'm also not sure if i have accidentally change any settings.
i shoot with a 5D mark 2 and use the raw file for edit.
    will appreciate any advise. Thanks

    Yes
I've edited and exported an image to a different folder on my desktop. I've realised I still need to do some work on it
but when I try and open it again in Lightroom ( I see it in Library)  I get a mesaage saying file not found...Please help
We're going to need a lot more details aobut exactly (EXACTLY) the steps you follow after you do the export, because normally I would say this is one of the easiest things possible in Lightroom. Are any files moved or renamed or disks unplugged in between the time of export and the time when you try to edit again?

  • Exported Jpeg Color Shifted...Why? (see photos)

What's up with this? I exported a photo to sRGB and noticed when viewing in the browser and in Microsoft Digital Image 2007 the photo is too yellow and not enough red flesh tones. If your print is fine directly from LR, it's a good sign, but no guarantee that it's fine for an outside print. Can you double check to make sure the monitor profile is set right?

  • Colors not displaying when viewing PDF files

Recently I've discovered that when viewing PDF files I'm not seeing all of the colors in the charts. This is happening with PDF files that I made as recently as last year (when everything looked fine). It's also happening with files that other people at other organizations have made. If I go to a coworkers computer and pull up the files, I can see everything just fine. Also, when I print the files, everything comes out just fine. Any ideas as to why I'm not seeing things correctly on my machine? I'm using a Dell laptop, Windows 7, Adobe Acrobat Pro XI, Microsoft Word 2010. I've also been having problems with graphics disappearing when converting Word files to PDF files but that's a topic I'll post on the Acrobat page. Seems like it may all be related to my new laptop. Thanks.
Attaching an image of what I see when I view the PDF file and a screen shot of the Word file with the color in which does print even though I can't see it. I can see some of the colors in the PDF file but not all of them.

    Hi,
The problem with ie9 or ie8 gets more complicated, since the alt key works on some files, one example is:
    http://www.instrulog.dk/download/manualer/humanware/focus-14-manual
The files where it does not work are placed on sites that require sign in with a digital signature, so it is impossible to give urls to  the files.
With screen readers and with pdf files in the browser, the normal way of getting to the
address bar does not work, but that is not really a problem but a minor irritation, and not a new behavior.

  • Color difference when using a different programs

I find this very odd, but now that I am using multiple program within the Creative Suite I am beginning to notice color differences. For instance, if I use hex: #200add in Photoshop it renders a different blue then in Illustrator or InDesign. Why is this? And how can I keep the colors consistent? It's not just with hex colors but with RGB/CYMK. Is there a way I can move my color specs from Photoshop to InDesign and Illustrator?
It's the same monitor, same file, same everything, but a different program renders a different color. I am also running CS5.5 on a iMac
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hex color shifts appearance on screen depending on what source ICC profile is being used (or passed through to the monitor) and the monitor profile
in other words hex color on the monitor seems to be dependent on the profile (colorspace) it was set in and how different the monitor profile is from that profile (colorspace)
to keep it consistent in a Web browser, Convert your files to sRGB before setting a hex color before saving for web
    acuracy is a different matter
    COLOR CONSISTENCY vs. COLOR ACCURACY
A real problem for Web designers and color-managed Web browsers is mixing tagged and untagged color where the graphic background needs to "match" or blend seamlessly into an HTML background color. The choice really boils down to designing Web pages for color consistency or color accuracy...MORE (see the COLOR CONSISTENCY vs. COLOR ACCURACY tutorial)
printing, I would think, is bound by the same rules
Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator -- you could start by syncing your Color Settings in those apps and being aware of the rules (how each app uses profiles) but i don't think there is a simple answer here

  • Color shift between image viewed in ACR and open in PS

Today I updated Photoshop CC and now I have a slight color shift problem between the same image open in ACR and then opened in Photoshop. It appears to be slightly more saturated in ACR.
I have tried the same thing on another computer and it does NOT have the same problem so it must have been something that happened in the update (ACR was one of the items updated). I have also compared the preferences between the two computers and they are identical.
I guess the next thing to do is to deinstall PS and reinstall????
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Any difference between ACR and Photoshop is most likely due to a monitor profile problem. They both use the same monitor profile, but there are differences in the actual conversion so a problem can show up differently between them.
Is your monitor calibrated/profiled, and if so how, using what calibrator? Or are you using the Windows default (sRGB), or perhaps you got a bad manufacturer profile through Windows Update? (yes, that happens frequently).
To find out if the monitor profile is indeed the problem, go to Control Panel > Color Management > Devices. Set sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as default profile (if it isn't already), then relaunch Photoshop/Bridge and see if the difference is still there. If your monitor is wide gamut, use Adobe RGB instead.
Note that this doesn't fix the problem as such, but if you don't have a calibrator sRGB will usually be close enough until you decide to get one.
If you do have and use a calibrator, make sure it is set to make v2 profiles, not v4, and matrix rather than LUT profiles.

  • Big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 and Program Monitor

I get a big Color Shift between exported H264 mp4 on Vimeo/Youtube and Quicktime X and Program Monitor.
There are quite a few posts on Quicktime gamma issues, but there seem to be no solutions and the other editors I know don't seem to have this problem.
I know there will be a bit of a shift but this is MASSIVE. At the moment I add a whole extra adjustment layer to all my clips to get it approximately right, but ofcourse this does not solve the issue nor does it give proper results.
Please do not reply with the "You need a real reference monitor via SDI etc etc ..."
By my logic on the same screen the program monitor should resemble what is going to be the final result in a relevant player like Quicktime X which all normal apple consumers use to watch their films.  I know VLC and Mpeg streamclip gives different results, but mostly when playing Quicktime/h264 files Quicktime will play it thus average users ( the people I'd like to downwload/buy my films )will watch it in Quicktime.
Furthermore, Quicktime X's gamma/color looks very similar to the image I get on Youtube or Vimeo - which is where all my current work is going. I'm not outputting to boradcast or DVD etc.
Strangely enough the MPEG 2 stuff I've done for DVD matches the Youtube output with the Program monitor.
    What am I doing wrong?
I have a Dell 2711 wide Gamut Display which is calibrated with an SPyder 3 Elite using its full colour gamut ( close to 90% of Adobe RGB - thus bigger than sRGB or Rec709) Could Premiere be ignoring the calibration in the Program monitor and making the image values 16-235 and then Quicktime uses all  values 0-255? If so, how can I fix this?
Any help will be much appreciated!

I know this has been a while so hopefully you found some help by now, but maybe this will help anyone stumbling across this.
What people seem to be missing in what you are asking is... this is the same file, on the same monitor, but with a different appearance in different software.  It is not a question of whether the overall monitoring is GOOD, and it is not a matter of hardware settings (as that would most likely propogate across all software) it is that it is not CONSISTENT side by side on the very same monitor.
I had very similar issues that really seemed to get worse when we got new monitors, which is what lead me to chime in here.  The monitors were also wide gamut displays.
    The problem is likely this...
    1. The difference being shown are the difference between software that properly color manages (i.e. Premier or After Effects) and software that does not (i.e. Quicktime or some web browsers)
    2. The reason it is so severe is that the wide gamut monitors are able to show many more colors and thus the difference between the managed and unmanaged software is much more exagerrated than on regular gamut monitors.
I found this great link that helped calm my nerves and helped me get handle on much of what is going on.
    http://www.artstorm.net/journal/2009/07/color-management-wide-gamut-dell-2408/
Now that is not to say that the 0-255/16-235 issue is not also involved here.  It is definitely possible that a specific codec or compressor is part of the problem, but it sounds like it starts with the color management issue first.
    I hope this helps.

  • Color Shift Happening When Exporting - Bug in Acrobat Export?

Hi, we are using InDesign CS3 and trying to output a file to send to a printer. We are desiring to have all colors converted to the printer's CMYK color space upon exporting (they sent us their ICC profile).
But we are getting a bizarre bug that I cannot figure out. It seems like it's actually a software bug, not an issue with settings. I'll try to describe the issue here:
Upon using 'Convert to Destination (Preserver Numbers or Not)' in the PDF export dialog in InDesign (using PDF/X-4 setting), using the 'Document CMYK' profile, there is a shift in color for 1 particular element. We have a grayscale image of a bunch of dots (black dots on solid white background) that is placed in a frame in InDesign. This image is 'colorized' in InDesign by setting an image color and a frame color (the image color appears as the 'foreground' and the frame color is the 'background'). We've been doing this all the way back to the Quark days (many years). But if the 'background/frame' color is a combination of C+M+Y (with no black), the Magenta and Yellow values are shifted to the Yellow and Black channels (for example - 52c, 5m, 10y, 0k becomes 52c, 0m, 5y, 10k).
I have never run into this before, and we've run this job with the same element many times now over the last couple years. But I have always used 'No Color Conversion' in my PDFs in the past. So it has something to do with the 'conversion'.
    So far I've tried:
    - Creating new document with just the single element, also created from scratch. So it's not an error in the file.
    - Starting with different profiles (to make sure the profile wasn't corrupt).
    - Choosing 'Preserve Numbers' or not when outputting PDF.
    - All sorts of color combinations. It also appears that if there is black in the color, this value gets shifted to the magenta channel, then the magenta & yellow bump down.
    - Checked the grayscale image to make sure it was flat, and using pure black & white colors. It is.
I've also tried printing to Distiller (we have Acrobat 8 Pro), but the settings are a lot different here so I'm not sure if I set it up properly. I made a duplicate of the default PDFX3 2002 profile, then edited the color settings to 'Convert Everything to CMYK' and set our printer's profile as the CMYK Color Space. But images are converted to 'DeviceCMYK' and not the profile I put.
    - ANYBODY have any ideas or even know where I would start???
THANKS. This job needs to go out, but I'm also trying to get a solid workflow down for the future.

Looks like the issue in the CM thread.
I'm trying to replicate the issue but haven't done it yet. Still grasping at straws
    1. Did the ID doc ever undergo Convert to Profile?
    2. In Swatch Panel do "Add unnamed colors". Make sure the grayscale is colored with swatches, not colors created in the Color Picker
    3. Do the color values in the swatches have crazy decimal values? Is the color mode of the swatches CMYK?
    4. What format are the grayscale links - TIFF or PSD?
    5. Make certain they are links, not embedded (I'm sure they are links though)
    6. The colorization - are there tints applied to the object colors, or are they 100%?

  • Color is off when viewing pdfs in reader

I created a pdf of some 4 color art for a client.
When other people in my department viewed it on their monitors, the color was muted and not true.
Can anyone suggest why this may be??
My curiosity is that maybe their monitors are not as claibrated, or set to a different color space..??
I did go in and check that overprint preview was unchecked to make sure this was not one of the offending causes.
    Any suggestions??

    Is your monitor calibrated?
Certainly on any uncalibrated monitor the colors are wildly
    unpredictable.
