JSF: Problem during Tomcat Startup

Hi, I am having a strange problem with a JSF-application.
I am using jdk 1.3.1 (13), Tomcat 5.0.28 and the Sun JSF-Ref. implementation. On my dev-environment all is well. On the system-test environment of the customer, Tomcat would not initialize the FacesServlet claiming that it can not find the faces-config-file.
I have tries all 3 ways of referencing the config-file (put it into a jar, put faces-config.xml directly into WEB-INF, add a context-param to web.xml with the URI of the file and param-name javax.faces.CONFIG_FILES). All three work fine on my dev, none of them works on sys-test.
Funny enough, if I use the context-param in web.xml, where the web-app context is ctx, for the URI /WEB-INF/the-faces-config.xml I get an error during startup, for the URI /ctx/WEB-INF/the-faces-config.xml I don't have a problem on startup but the servlet does not actually read the config-file (you can tell from the fact that it can't resolve any of the Bean-methods).
Any idea would be much appreciated!
Cheers, Bastian

Hi, thanks - unfortunately that did not help. The system (in the original configuration) does find the jars ok in WEB-INF/lib (I can tell since there is code in the jar which is executed before the problems hit me and the stack-trace when it can't resolve the bean-methods is from com.sun.faces.el.impl). It looks like the beans are not actually initialized (which is consistent, since the system can't find the config-file which wires the beans).

Any Idea? HOw to get rid of this problem?.

I have figured out the problem. Some of the plugins were missing from the installation source. I copied the missing plugins from other installation and it worked.

  • Load Balancing - Problems during Portal Startup

We are using three Portal servers (EP 7.0) and load is distributed between these servers by a load balancer.
Load balancer does a basic check - Portal server is listening on TCP port.
If one of the servers is really down (eg. after a stopsap) the load balancer does not send any request to that server. That was the intention.
During startup of a server, it starts listening on the port and load balancer sends requests to it. As 20 minutes startup phase is not completed, users get a message 503- unavailable. This means we do not really have redundancy.
The load balancer can also check for URL, but expects to get a 200 ok response.
We tried that with page http://<server>:<port>/index.html. This was no improvement, as this page is also displayed in a very early phase of the startup.
If we use http://<server>:<port>/irj/portal load balancer gets authentication requests and no 200 ok and does not send any request to servers, even if they are up and running.
    Question :
What URL can be used, which works like index.html (send 200 ok), but only after startup is complete ?

    Hi,
beside the suggestion from Michael, you could also place a HTML page inside the portal to check for. Like an HTML file in the KM that is acessible in an anonymous way.
This page should only return 200 if the portal is up and running. And if you want to take down or simulate an error, it should be easy to rename / move / delete the page to trigger an error code other than 200.
    br,
    Tobias

  • K8n neo2 POST problem during cold startup

    Hello everybody,
Sorry for posting this again but i just don't understand it.
    The facts:
Every once in a while - sometimes daily and sometimes every 2nd or 3rd day - when I power on my computer the bios hangs at its very first stage with all d-leds red.
This is according to the d-bracket : 'system power on, bios will hang here if processor is damaged on not installed properly'.
But after ~ 30 seconds the boot process continues (it apparently doesn't start again but continues) displaying the following error message after IDE detection: 'warning. system now in safe mode. please reset all overclocking features.'
After that everything is FINE, the bios settings are as always (failsafe with sata enabled) and the computer has no other problems. It runs all applications without trouble, memtest86 and prime95 don't give me errors and I won't get bsod's.
This entire issue happens only when the computer was turned off for a prolonged period, i.e. it has to be off for more than 6-8 hours.
    I just don't understand it  .
I see that here are a couple of guys with quite a huge knowlege of this machines and so i hope that someone has a clue to what this issue can be caused by and perhaps how it could be solved ?
    Thanx,
    vanish
(Forgive me my misspellings, i'm not a native so)

This is the email I sent to MSI UK:
    Hi
I believe I have a faulty motherboard as the BIOS only posts after I switch the power on at least 3 - 6 times from a cold boot.
The error message I keep getting is 'warning system now in safe mode, please reset overclocking features in bios or press F1 to continue' although I have not altered any overclocking features or overclocked anything.  One thing I have noticed is that the processor is running at 2210 Mhz (used MSI Core Centre) instead of 2200 MHz as standard even though it is displays 200 MHz in the BIOS, could this be possibly something to do with it?
Please could you suggest what process I need to do to RMA the board or how I could diagnose the problem.
I have tried 3 different types of RAM in various slots, 1 and 2 sticks, dual and single channel and the same thing keeps happening.
    My PC Spec:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/jsp/tagext/TagLibraryInfoThis exception is been thrown if the given class was available in classpath during compile time, but not during run time. The solution is obvious: make sure that the given class (or at least the JAR file with the given class) is available in the classpath during run time.
By the way, why did you think that this problem is related to JSF?

I am unable to start the login application on the Tomcat Web Application Manager.
The following Message appears on top:
FAIL - Application at context path /login could not be started
Let me say, that I have already continued developing more code for this application up to this point and wanted to test in the meantime. Since I had this failure I mentioned above, I have stripped down the application to the code above and I still have no success. I cannot go further until I am getting this very small application up and running on the server.
Is anybody out there who could give me a hint to solve this problem?
I really appreciate any hints, since I am circeling around the problem for guit a while.
    Thanks very much
    Markus

The following Message appears on top:
FAIL - Application at context path /login could not be started
Let me say, that I have already continued developing more code for this application up to this point and wanted to test in the meantime. Since I had this failure I mentioned above, I have stripped down the application to the code above and I still have no success. I cannot go further until I am getting this very small application up and running on the server.
Is anybody out there who could give me a hint to solve this problem?
I really appreciate any hints, since I am circeling around the problem for guit a while.
    Thanks very much

    Hi nayab,
Ur workspace metadata seems to be corrupted. Go to ur workspace. rename .metadata folder  & open the NWDS. It will not show ur previous configuration so u have to import the Development configuration again. In case ur any activity is open, it will come back when u import the Development Configuration.

  • Problems during startup NWDS

    Hello Experts,
Need your help:  I got an error "Problems during startup, Check the ".log"....." when starting NWDS.  I checked .log, here is the errors:
    org.eclipse.core.internal.boot.DelegatingLoaderException: org.eclipse.core.runtime.CoreException: Problems encountered starting up plug-in: "org.eclipse.core.resources".

    Any suggestions/advises?
    Thanks, Jin

    Hi,
Take the backup of .metadata folder, then delete that from your workspace.
If you delete the .metadata file - It will no do any harm to your existing projects in your workspace.
But you need to import them into the NWDS again.
If there is any issue you delete the new .metadata and place the old backup .metadata.
There are no issues. I did that just now
    Or
Instead of deleting the .metadata you can try giving the new workspace in -data of NWDS.
And in new workspace copy your old projects (from old workspace) and import them again into NWDS.
    How to give  -data
Right click on NWDS shortcut on desktop and in shortcut tab
    in target input:
For example already you have like this
    D:\IDE70\eclipse\SapIde.exe -vm "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_04\bin\javaw.exe"
    then at the end add
    -data "C:\NewWorkspace"

  • Tomcat startup problem

    Hi all!!
I'm using a BOE XI 3.1 SP2 with Apache Tomcat Was, in a Windows 2003 VMware image...
I'm having problems starting tomcat.... It's really slow... and I don't know what to do.
I've tried to modify the tomcat configuration, adding more maximum memmory pool... and I have the same problem
    any idea???
    thanks to all!!

I typically set my tomcat memory in the tomcat configuration/java options tab to 384 min/max
I do this because my BM's are set to only run on 768 memory. Also I turn off any unused services in the CMC and make sure they do not start by default (pm services, voyager etc). By default tomcat tries to grab up to 1 gig memory and if your VM doesn't have that available you will see slowness. Also to note tomcat 5.5 in general is much slower than the old 5.0 version that was in XIR2.
    Regards,
    Tim

I have set all the jar files in the axisclasspath.

I too am having the same issue and I am using the Java2WSDL and the WSDL2Java to create both the WSDL and the WSDD and I still get Server.NoService when I try to use the AdminClient to deploy the wsdd?
I have tried using both 1.2 and 1.2.1.
I am going to try to use an older verison to see if this is a bug..
If any one know the answer to this deployment problem please speak up.

  • Problem with JBoss startup in a zone

    Hi!
I try to run JBoss inside a sparse-root zone, but encounter a problem during startup, it simply stucks always at a certain point.
This is how the zone is configured:
    root@mantis:/usr/local/Dtrace # zonecfg -z setam-test
    zonecfg:setam-test> info
    zonepath: /var/zone/setam-test

    type: lofs
    options: []
    net:
    address: 172.16.14.5
    physical: bge0
During startup ( bin/startserver.sh ) I watch the server.log with tail -f, but here it comes: the output stopps always at the RMIAdaptor - like
    2006-10-17 11:12:37,810 DEBUG [org.jboss.deployment.MainDeployer] Begin deployment start file:/opt/jboss-4.0.2/server/btv/deploy/jmx-invoker-service.xml

Here I can wait for minutes, nothing else follows. At the end I kill the java process.
I'm definitely no JBoss expert, and I wonder what RMIAdaptor does or what it expects. I assume it tries to initialize something and is not allowed to (?).
My question is: besides of truss or Dtrace, how should I diagnose this symptom at first hand?
    Thanks ... Nick

My colleague found the answer: he had disabled the default registration rule. Once enabled, a quick "zac reg" worked.

  • Message in alert log file during the startup of the DB

    Hi,
i have two instances, i have the same warning in the alert log file during the startup of the DB:
Oracle instance running on a system with low open file descriptor limit.
Tune your system to increase this limit to avoid severe performance degradation.
The db_files parameter was at 1024 for the two instances, i have set it to 300 for the first instance and 550 for second, the message for the first instance was droped(it's ok), but the message was there in the alert log for the second instance.
The two instance are on the same machine.
The number of the open file limit on the linux machine is equal to 1024.
I have shutdown the first instance (with db_files=300) the problem persits for the second instance (with db_files=550).
My question is how to determinate the right value of db_files parameter to avoid this message.
    Regards.

Increase the max number of open file on Linux or decrease db_files.
f the OS limit is 1024 db_files would have to be >= 472 for the message to be printed. t is printed if an instance is configured to access more datafiles than the OS-specific limit on the number of files that can be open in a single process. In this case the server will re-cycle the file descriptors.
