Junk Filtering Not Enabling

After finding that Photoshop wouldn't install to my Case Sensitive filesystem, I had to eventually break down and start my Leopard install over from scratch.
After coming up on the fresh OS a second time I started encountering some strange issues. First of which, .Mac was not syncing properly (but it eventually did). I thought nothing of this until I had opened up mail. I had a not one but 3 junk mail folders but they weren't really being recognized as Junk mail folders.
First I had disabled and re-enabled Junk mail filtering (shutting down mail and restarting between disable and enable). This didn't get rid of the bogus junk mail folders. I followed up by just removing these junk mail folders after disabling Junk Mail filtering again. After re-enabling I did get my Junk Mail folders back however now the rest of Junk Mail filtering was broken. Not only was Junk Mail not filtering (which to an extent is expected since I would need to re-train it) but I had no way to either report a message as junk. Here's what I've tried so far.
1) Reinstalling Mail.app
2) Removing all the Junk Mail filtering specific files in $HOME/Library/Mail
3) Moving $HOME/Library/Mail aside to force Mail.app to completely reconfigure
So far, nothing. I've been searching the forums for answers but I haven't come across a problem quite like mine yet.
Any ideas?

I finally got mail to completely reset. Here's what I did that made everything start working again.
Make sure Mail.app is closed before starting this.
1) Open Terminal
2) cd ~/Library/Preferences
3) rm com.apple.mail.plist
4) cd ~/Library
5) mv Mail Mail.backup
6) Launch Mail.app
I, of course, wouldn't recommend this for POP accounts unless you've saved off your mail.

  • Use this mailbox for Junk does not appear to work in Mail 4.2.

    Hello, all:
Have been using 10.6.x since it came out on my previous iMac [24" Early 2008 model]. Went with a fresh install of 10.6.3 on the new iMac [27" i7], and ported data over.
The only problem that I've had is that setting the Use this mailbox for Junk command in setting up Mail 4.2 does not seem to work. I've closed Mail and looked at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist, and the correct mailbox name is indicated for the two accounts [IMAP and GMail over IMAP] where I'd like to do Junk Mail filtering. However, there is no centralized Junk Mail filter, which is really annoying me.
I didn't have this problem previously in Mail 4.x, and I'm expecting that it's a bug specific to 4.2, which I haven't seen in my previous incarnation because I did the import from 3.x->4.0, and the prefs carried forward correctly from 4.0->4.2.
Anyone else running into this, and is there anything else I should be looking at? Am I explaining the problem such that it's clear what I'm asking?
    Thanks,
    Geof

I figured out the problem (for me, anyways). In Preferences > Junk Mail, make sure Junk filtering is enabled and make sure the "move it to junk mailbox" radio button is selected.

  • Mavericks 10.9.2 Junk Filtering radically broken

Mail under Mavericks (latest update as applied by App Store, verified multiple times that I have latest version of the OS, 10.9.2) has radically broken mail app junk filtering.
If I do the following I will have at least 90% of the messages sent end up marked as junk on my primary system, the last 17" MacBook Pro series made, however, even my less than one year old MacBook Air will exhibit similar behavior, just not at the extreme frequency of mail junk filtering failures as on the main MacBook Pro:
Create new email message addressed to myself
I should add that I have BCC myself set on all of my mail accounts
Add photos and Hit send (I use this process as a simple way to gather images from a number of folders on various backup drives and send the selected set of images in one group that I can then easily export to iPhoto (or Aperture)
    Message sends
Message never appears in my inbox, neither the TO: nor BCC: appear
Check sent folder and find that the message is IN the Sent folder, with brown header indicating that I Marked the message as JUNK, I did NOT do so
I have reset all rules, no change, disabled junk no change (yes with Junk DISABLED the above will happen), I have used the advance option and edited the rules to try and simplify the settings to the bare amount, all with no discernable changes. I have even added rules that explicitly state DO NOT consider as junk any messages containing my domain name for example, still no change.
Even though I have marked LEAVE JUNK MAIL IN INBOX it is inconsistent, mail I send to myself the majority of times will be in the sent folder, other email that mail app marks as junk MAY be in my inbox, but not consistently.
Even email I have marked multiple times as Not Junk continues to be marked as Junk (for example NO email sent from my work domain to my work domain email should ever be marked as junk, yet it is, but always inconsistently, that is out of  200 hundred plus emails a day, a handful will be marked as junk, in some cases the exact same sender will be marked as junk on successive days with me marking each message as Not Junk, then for a period all email will be delivered as intended, only to have stuff from the previous email sender start appearing as marked as junk again).
When I have ENABLED Junk filtering I have verified that all check boxes are as have been suggested in other threads here
Again, even DISABLING Junk filtering still results in the inconsistent delivery of my own emails to myself
As an experiment, if I send the message from my gmail account USING mail app to compose and send the message (NOT using the web interface to gmail, but the mail app native gmail account setup) sending the message to my personal domain email address it appears the problem never exhibits. The BCC shows up in my gmail account inbox, and TO: message appears in my primary personal domain account inbox. I have tried this at least four or five times and so far it has never failed to deliver the message, and never has marked as junk. However, based on the inconsistent behavior of junk filtering with my work domain email I would not be willing to bet that using gmail to send to my personal domain account would not have some junk filter mistakes as well.
This has gotten bad enough that I would gladly go to another mail client, but any alternative client needs to support at minimum the following:
Must support FULL iPhoto (or Aperture) integration, this means not only ability to send email from iPhoto, but ability to EXPORT images from a mail message into iPhoto, as well as select Photos from media in finder sidebar and have iPhoto browser open to SEND images via email  as alternative to sending from iPhoto directly
Must support Exchange (used for my work domain email)
Images in attached message should allow mass saving to file system folders as well if desired, in addition to exporting to iPhoto
I Have tried several alternative email apps for OS X. Postbox seems to be the only one that claims any iPhoto integration at all, and it is marginal at best, and does not seem to support exporting images directly into iPhoto regardless. Postbox also had some other weirdness, some options from mail seem to be just missing (for example if BCC myself on all messages exists I have not found the setting), loading messages with any attachments was much slower than mail, etc. But if there was a way to get Postbox to work better with iPhoto I would be willing to give it a try.
I have even wondered if maill app and/or preferences are corrupted. I have a ton of email that would be painful to lose (I do use Mail Steward to back up email from previous years, but it would be a fair amount of work to completely back up all of my accounts and delete everything and restart using Mail Steward, but that might be my only option). Even if I did totally kill all my preferences and deleted the entire mail section in /Library it is not clear if there is any way to reinstall just mail. Or do I download the entire OS X Mavericks installer, run that and hope it reinstalls mail app and start all over? I am willing to even try that, if I had a reasonable expectation that it would actually correct anything. But I suspect based on what I have seen here and on the web that this is a fundementatl break in the mail app code.
As an alternative, is there a terminal command I can try to use to totally eradicate and shutoff mail app junk filtering since the control in preferences to disable junk filtering is not working, at least on my system?
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks

I did some additional testing last night. Setting Junk to DISABLED, closing mail and re-launching mail, and then sending myself a message from the same account STILL ends up with the message marked as JUNK (in fact it indicates I marked it for junk, which clearly I did NOT so mark my own message sent to me as junk) with the message marked as junk sitting in the sent folder. Setting junk filtering back to ENABLED, exiting mail and re-launching again, still no change. I again RESET all junk rules and learned behavior, tried sending myself a message again, and still had the same failure. I have verified the various settings that have been proposed in other threads in this forum, no joy, same behavior. It simply appears that email sent from your own account to yourself is frequently (if not 100% in recent testimng) tagged as being junk, and that simply is nuts.
Mail is fundamentally, radically broken since one of the latest Mavericks releases. (I think this actually started in 10.9.1, but I know for certain it is 10.9.2).
I fail to see how ANY setting of rules, et al, can be at issue here. When junk filtering is DISABLED nothing should ever be filtered as junk, period. In reality mail is still being impacted by the junk mail filtering, regardless of any setting, including totally disabling junk mail filtering in mail preferences.
Add in that in the latest versions of mail (again for at least the last two major 10.9 updates, if not longer) deleting messages is inconsistent. I have had messages I have deleted reappear in one of my folders multiple times. The most common are messages popping back up in the DRAFTS folder, where I have a copy of the message in my sent folder, and the recipient of the message acknowledges receipt of the message. Clearly the message is NOT still a draft. I manually delete these spurious messages and in some cases the same messages reappear back into mail in the drafts folder again!
I love Apple products, and support the company and their technology, but mail has some significant issues, and regrettably there does not appear to be any viable alternative that really integrates with the rest of the OS X environment as well, leaving us with either a badly broken mail client, or significant downgrade in functionality moving to a different client.

  • Junk Filtering Doesn't Function As Described

I'm trying to comprehend how junk filtering works. I've tried setting it
so that it will allow all messages from parties in my address book, or previous
recipients, or those who send e-mails to my complete address, and then a list of all the words I can think of to cover those e-mails for Viagra, Losing Weight Etc.. However, this seems to filter everything into Junk Mail except the Junk? Am I misunderstanding the concept?
Or is there something odd with how this is set up - When I read the Preferences I have set up it does seem odd that is says "If any of the following conditions are met it will be filtered - and then it lists Previous Recipients or Not in My Address Book.
Of course I want e-mails from Previous Recipients and Parties in my address book - as well as people who have looked up my full e-mail address - But Somehow most of these are in the Junk Mail - and Garbage is what comes through. My regular clients end up in Junk Mail sometimes!
I have e-mails from my significant other (from whom there are hundreds of existing e-mails) ending up in the Junk Section - as well as those from regular clients - and parties in my address book. I've tried adding names to the address book once they show up as junk mail - and - hours later there they are again in Junk Mail once again. I've tried listing them as
Not Junk Mail without luck, next time a message comes in - it's right back in Junk Mail again. What am I doing wrong? Or is this filtering thing just a mess?
    Thanks!

I've been using the Mail.app since Jaguar was introduced, thru Panther and now Tiger. I've never removed, added to or adjusted the default Junk Mail rules and the filter has always worked very well for me. Mail.app's Junk Mail filter does not rely on these rules anyway and IMO trying to add additional criteria to the existing default Junk Mail rules based on words, etc. is like a dog chasing his tail.
I would do the following to start over.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail and disable Junk Mail filtering.
Quit and relaunch Mail. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail. Re-enable Junk Mail filtering. Select "Move it to the Junk mailbox (Automatic)" and select the Reset button to reset all Junk Mail "learned" settings.
Check this link which includes information on how the filter works which is much more sophisticated that filtering on words alone.

  • Junk mail not automatically moved to Junk folder

    Hello.
I'm using an IMAP account and have configured Mail to move junk mail to the chosen junk mail folder (junk is not filtered on the server but on my client). Since the junk mail filter is still learning sometimes junk mail is not detected and still goes to the inbox. That's okay.
If I then select that message it is somehow miraculously detected and marked as junk. However, it is not automatically moved to the junk folder but remains in the inbox marked as junk?
Is this desired behaviour? Why is the mail not automatically moved to the junk folder, like it is when I manually mark a mail as junk?
    Thanks in advance

I just happened to notice that even mail that is automatically marked as spam/junk remains in my inbox. So I open the inbox folder and there is message that is marked as junk. Only when I manually reset and set the junk status is the message moved to the junk folder.
This seems to be the case in an IMAP acount where all folders (sent, drafts, spam, etc.) are subfolders of the actual inbox folder.
Is anyone else experiencing this behaviour?
    Thanks in advance

  • Disk Utility & System Preferences not Enabled or Installed

I have a Mac OS X version 10.6.8, I'm not that computer savvy and I'm having a really hard time figuring this one out.
This just started 2 days ago. When I go to click on system preferences under the apple symbol nothing happens. I've tried several times to open it and nothing happens. So I went to mac help to open it and when I try to open it I get an error message saying "system preferences is not enabled or installed". So I went to my disk utility to check the hard drive for errors and when I try to open my disk utility I get the same error message.
I've tried updating my software and its current. I've restarted the computer several times. I've removed my junk files & spam and still nada.....
I have no idea what to do...

    First try this.

The LAST line make me chucle because it the first on the list of supported card in the "cuda_supported_cards.txt" file. Anybody else seen this?

    Hi Wendell,
Sorry for the inconvenience. NVIDIA is currently working on drivers that support CUDA on Mavericks 10.9 with some of the older NVIDIA cards such as the GTX 285 and the Quadro 4800.
For others interested, the Quadro 4000, K5000 and GTX 680 ect... work with CUDA in 10.9.

I have latest CUDA drivers, so i guess i am just waiting till a proper update that have the fixes to support my card.

  • Why is the 'Choose icon...' button in the Options tab of the field property dialog box not enabled?

I am using Adobe Acrobat Professional XI running on Windows 8.
This “feature” has been bugging me for some time now. I remember it happening when I used Acrobat 9 Professional (Windows XP) and it is still happening in Acrobat XI Professional. I think I figured out a situation when I can reproduce this “feature” conistently and I hope someone fixes this.
Try the following and see what happens:
    1. Acrobat Professional is not open.
    2. Launch Word and start editing a document (or some other authoring tool that can generete PDF document).
    3. After editing the document, generate a PDF version of the document.
    4. Launch Acrobat Professional and edit the PDF document generated in 3.
    5. Add a button.
    6. View the button's properties.
    7. Change the Fill Color property in the Appearance tab to none.
    8. Change the Layout in the Options tab to Icon only.
Now here is what bugs be. Shouldn’t the 'Choose Icon ...' button be enabled? It is not enabled after step 8. It is possible that 'Choose Icon ...' button is enabled for some of you. I this case, it would be nice if at least one of you who experience the same bug say so in this thread so that Adobe doesn't think I am sending them on a wild goose chase.
I can enable it by selecting a different tab and then returning to the Options tab. A similar thing happens when reverting back from 'Icon only' to 'Label only' but I am not sure how to reconstruct a scenario for this one.
Here is the dialog box for one instance when I noticed the bug.
    Regards,
    John

You're right, it has been that way for a long time. I've never bothered reporting it as a bug since it's simple enough to deal with, but reporting it would be a reasonable thing to do.

  • BitLocker not Enabled on HP ElitePad 1000 G2

I have an HP ElitePad 1000 G2 that I am using MDT to apply our 8.1 x64 Update image.  This task sequence works fine on all other systems on which it has run.  On the ElitePad, when the task sequence completes, BitLocker is not enabled.
    Running manage-bde-status returns:
Disk volumes that can be protected with
    BitLocker Drive Encryption:
    Volume C: [OSDisk]
    [OS Volume]
        Size:                 115.58 GB
        BitLocker Version:    2.0
Conversion Status:    Used Space Only Encrypted
        Percentage Encrypted: 100.0%
        Encryption Method:    AES 128
        Protection Status:    Protection Off
        Lock Status:          Unlocked
        Identification Field: Unknown
        Key Protectors:
            TPM
If I look in the BitLocker applet on the control panel, it says "OSDisk (C:) BitLocker is waiting for activation"
    the ZTIBDE.log just stops at:
    Attempting to intiate ProtectKeyWithNumericalP@ssword
<Message containing password has been suppressed>
    A successful system shows:
    Attempting to intiate ProtectKeyWithNumericalP@ssword
Success protecting Key with numerical p@ssword
If I click Turn on BitLocker in the control panel applet or run the following commands:
    manage-bde -protectors -add c: -recoverypassword
    manage-bde -on c: -recoverypassword
The recovery key protector is created and uploaded to AD and BitLocker shows as enabled.
Any ideas to why this is happening?

after some more investigation, I found the following article
http://netecm.netree.ch/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=80 and adding the registry key referenced in the article fixed the issue.

firefox plays video, but no sound. when I type about:plugins in location bar, it shows the firefox default plugin is not enabled. When I look at my plugins, it says it is enabled. I have uninstalled 3.6 and re-installed with the same result. Why do I have no sound. Computer plays I-tunes and all other sounds, just no web browser sounds.

Glad you seem to have sorted things out.
The warning about the warranty is light hearted, I think at one stage it warned "here be dragons" but also intended to make us think as it warns that making changes may produce problems.

  • Why firefox 3.6 downloads all of the files again after restartarting the browser from a website if the "clear history when Firefox closed" is not Enabled?

We have a corporate website, we officially support FF3, FF4, IE8 and IE9. Our web site is quite big, so we really need browser caching, first time page load is around 15 seconds. With files in the cache getting new page is less than a second.
Everything works perfect except with FF3. With FF4, IE8, IE9 if we are on the website, clicking everywhere is fast, the page is in the cache. If we restart the browser, it is still fast, it loads files from the cache.
But with FF3 we have a problem. Every time we restart the browser, it is loading the files again from the server, instead of using the local cache (checked with Firebug). I can reproduce the problem anytime, it is the same with every FF3 instances. I double checked, the "clear history when Firefox closed" option is not enabled.
Could you advise please how to use the local cache either after browser restart?
    Thank you!
    Chris

Just read that the default memory storage on FF is set to 5 mbs. You can up that by clicking on tools, advanced and overriding the default and set it to 50 mbs (if you use lots of tabs) or 10 mbs (if you use just a few).
I open a blank tab and clear the cache periodically, while I am working. I can have several tabs open and watch videos on Youtube, by doing this. Have you cleared your cache?
Since I have an older computer, I've also used CCleaner for years. I use it often, but always before signing off. You can get it free...search for CCleaner, download from Pirifoam free. I didn't change any of the settings and it clears crap left behind from uninstalling programs, clears all browsers at once of: cookies, history, passwords, etc. I love it!
I had freezing, before using the "open blank tab, clear the cache" thing. Now I have no problems. Plus, as I said...you can change the default memory usage for FF and that should help too.
Hope this helps! Good luck! :)
