Junk mail filter and feedback email address

What's the feedback email address because I want to suggest Apple adds a spam filter to the phone already. Can you believe they don't have one.

i dont get why you're putting the owness on apple? thats to be done on whoever is providing you with the email. is it your tv's fault that theres so many commercials when you watch a program?
with that said, use gmail. its does a GREAT job filtering stuff i dont want.

    I've seen this question asked in a few different threads, but many of them seem to be dated back to September or October. Was wondering if there was any new light someone could shed on this:
    I have a client who reported that all of her Sent Mail was going into the Junk Mail folder - and that she needs to "unmark" it before she can send it.
    She is getting really frustrated by this, but I can see she's not the only one.
    I reset her Junk Mail database a couple of days ago, but that did not help - now everything she sends is getting labeled as such.
    I haven't seen a definitive workaround or fix for this - does one exist? Or does a rule have to be created in mail that says "any mail from <user@domain> is not junk"?

    The fix was: Turn off Junk Mail filter

    (and reset database for good measure)

  • OSX Lion Mail Server Junk Mail Filter blocks incoming mail from any Yahoo address

    I have yet to be able to use OSX Lion Mail Server's Junk Mail Filter.  I have several contacts who use (free) Yahoo Mail addresses.  Whenever I turn on Junk Mail Filter, even at the Most Cautious setting, any incoming mail from Yahoo.com addresses do not make it into my inbox.  I was told last year by an Apple Enterprise Tech Support contact that "..we're still having problems with that Junk Mail Filter, sorry, just leave it off for now.."  WTH  In the meantime, the good news is I'm not missing any incoming e-mails; but, I'm having to sort through and delete a few hundred spam messages each day.

    I agree with the points made by Strontium90. If you have any PCs then Apple's mail/contacts/calendar software is a poor choice. Kerio Connect as a mail/contacts/calendar server would not only support Macs but would also do a good job supporting PCs running Outlook.
    If you are going to become a pure Apple site, then you could use just the Apple software and this would be cheaper than using Kerio. For 30 users this might be a suitable solution, however even in a pure Apple environment many people prefer Kerio. For example I find Kerio much more pleasent when dealing with email addresses across multiple domains, email aliases, email group addresses, and so on. Kerio also has built-in email archiving, that is keeping a record of all emails. Kerio also provides a web-browser client for accessing email, calendar and contacts. It is worth noting that as standard Mountain Lion Server no longer includes a webmail feature. While I personally find the Kerio webclient rather ugly it does work.
    There are some annoyances I have with Kerio, firstly they have always charged a 'maintenance' fee for their software. This provided access to software updates, and in the past also provided access to Kerio technical support. Unfortunately they now only let you make two (2) support cases per year for that cost, and you now have to pay extra for any more cases. Also while they added support for EWS (Exchange Web Service) to allow using Outlook 2011 for Mac as a supported email client, they did a poor job of this so that it does not work properly with any other EWS compatible client. This means it will not work in EWS mode with Apple Mail, nor with Outlook for Windows. While there are other ways to connect these other clients, this seems a foolish move and there have been plenty of requests to fix this.
    Apple's Mail client uses EWS to connect to a 'real' MS Exhange server.

    You can create an alias @icloud.com email address within your current account that will receive email in your current iCloud inbox (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mm6b1a490a).  (@me.com addresses are no longer available as new addresses.)  Just be aware that you cannot use an alias address later to create a new iCloud account or move it to a different account.
    Also, even if you created a new iCloud account with a new ID, your existing purchases would not be lost.  They are permanently tied to the original ID you used to purchase them.  You can also continue to use the existing ID for the iTunes store; it does not need to be the same as the ID you use for iCloud.

    You can't change that address by design, but Apple allows you to create another two addresses and use instead they call those aliases and you can create and use those different for different people with the same account. Instructions here

  • Cut and Paste email addresses in Mail

    I have been frustrated when copying and pasting email address in Mail.
    When I copy an email address that is also in my Address Book from the "FROM" field and paste it somewhere else, the NAME of the contact always appears along with the email address in "" brackets.
    Is there some kind of setting I can change to ONLY get the email address and not the contact name and those dumb little brackets?

Formerly clicking on the email address in question would allow one to 'remove from previous recipients' which would help to filter out spam. I've adjusted all the settings under mail preferences, but that is not helping.

  • How to customize junk mail filter?

    Is there a way to filter all mail coming from a particular email address? I am daily bombarded by multiple annoying messages from the same address, and mark them junk mail manually. However, Mail does not learn it and new messages keep on coming. It appears that it would be very easy for the program to filter out all messages from senders who were previously identified as spammers, but for some reasons this is not the case. The existing custom junk mail filter is almost useless, because the only advanced option is to mark mail junk if ALL custom conditions are met, and no way to add a specific person to the black list. Actually there is no black list at all, which would be the most obvious way to organize junk mail filter.
    Does anybody know how to make Mail learn to filter messages that I mark junk?

    The Junk filter is based on an analysis of the content of the message, not on the sender's address. If you want to filter based on address, use a Rule.
    True spam comes from frequently changing addresses, and often appears to come from legitimate addresses, so basing the filter on address would be ineffective.

  • Overzealous junk mail filter

    I'm having trouble with Apple Mail. So much so in fact, that I'm ready to switch over to Entourage instead.
    I used to love how far advanced Mail's junk filter was over the competition. It rarely produced false positives (tagging good mail as junk), at the same time, catching most of my junk mail. Recently however, so many legitimate emails are being tagged as junk. I find myself sifting through my junk mail filter after each check of my email, which sort of eliminates the usefulness of a filter in the first place. Messages from online vendors, in particular, are getting tagged as spam. Every online order I place, every eBay transaction, even messages from my bank, it's over the top. Every time I discover one of these false positives, I tell mail that it's not junk and move it to my Inbox before deleting it. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be helping.
    I'd really like to keep using Apple Mail. Any advice on how to prevent false positives would be appreciated. Is there an easy way to create a whitelist?

    Spam doesn't get directed to your email address out of thin air.
    When a spammer uses HTML that must be rendered from a remote server and you allow the HTML to be rendered, you are notifiying the spammer that your email address is "known good" causing more spam to be received.
    Selecting a "remove me" link included with spam does no such thing and alerts the spammer that your email address is "known good" causing more spam to be received.
    Using an email address in a public internet forum or providing it out in the open in any public manner on the internet will cause that email address to receive spam.
    The email address used for online shopping is suspectible to spam depending on the merchant's privacy policies. Some state they take your privacy seriously when they do not.
    Are any of these email addresses used for online shopping - namely with your iCloud account?
    HTML included with spam rendered with any of these addresses - namely with your iCloud account?
    Google has an excellent spam filter at the server level, but I can't say the same about Yahoo.
    If someone is a regular Mail app user on a Mac with the included junk mail filter trained well along with accessing an IMAP account, it is a viable option to leave the Mail app on their Mac launched and running for junk mail to be filtered by the Mail app on their Mac. This will be reflected with accessing the account on a mobile device as well that doesn't have a junk mail filter.

  • Junk mail filter has suddenly stopped working properly

    I have reset it twice, and put it in training mode. While training, it works just fine...catches the things it's supposed to and let's the safe stuff through. But when I switch it back to have it auto-filter the junk mail into the junk mailbox, it starts misidentifying everything again. Tons of junk gets through, it doesn't filter out the junk it does catch (leaves it in the inbox), and identifies things as junk that aren't - especially annoying for regular items that I receive.
    Any ideas on why this has suddenly stopped? I haven't changed or adjusted any of the rules. I tried going in and changing up the identification colors just to see if that would help, but no luck.
    I have three email addresses where I receive mail. Two are set up as POP accounts, and one is an IMAP account. It doesn't seem to matter which account is receiving the junk mail, and it actually gets worse with time rather than better.

    Are you really using Mac OS X 10.4.2, as your profile indicates?
    There is probably some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. The following procedure should fix the problem:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash -- deleting this file is what clicking the Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail does. If you see an LSMMap file there, move it to the Trash too.
    4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
    5. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. This is where Mail 2.x stores all rules, including those used by the junk filter. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
    6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
    7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox folders there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
    Note: Messages in Junk folders with an .mbox suffix are stored locally, and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there and you want to preserve them, move them to another mailbox in Mail first. Messages in Junk folders with an .imapmbox suffix are stored on the server and can be ignored (Mail will rebuild those mailboxes automatically).
    8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
    If the above solves the problem and you don't have any rules you'd like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just delete the MessageRules.plist files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

    Why doesn't the Junk mail filter work all the time? I click on mail like from Best Buy or Omni Hotels to go into junk mail but hardly any of their mail goes into Junk. Other sites go directly to Junk. If I click on a Best Buy mail to indicate it's Junk, shouldn't that work 100% of the time forever and ever?

    If you don't want mail from a legitimate sender like Best Buy, unsubscribe from their ads. If that doesn't work, make a Rule to delete or move the messages.

    Now that I have iCloud, all the old .mac and .me email that I never used feeds through it.  Since there is no SPAM filter, I cannot block these emails from getting through and I get lots of spam now.   How do I delete the .mac and .me email addresses?

    I  set the Rules months ago to automatically put all email sent to those email addresses in TRASH.  However, they still appear in my Mail Trash on my Mac.  Just an annoyance.    Thanks for the response.

    This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
    The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
    Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
    I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)

    Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

    I've used today the email client and the email address autocompletion feature figured out nicely the email addresses of the recipients I wanted to send the email to. So far so good. However, when I've selected all addresses in the To line, I would have liked to be able to drag-and-drop them into the Address Book application, automatically have new entries created there and why not a new group too?

    No, that is not possible. However, [Mail Scripts|http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html] has a script to add every address to the address book, allowing you to pick which ones go to which group and to add a new group, if you want.
