Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
Hope this assists.

  • How can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing iLife applications?

I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications.  I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
    2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Fresh Install of Snow Leopard & CS5

I have a MacPro Intel early 2008 with (4) internal hard drives. I am currently running CS Design Premium CS4 from my Leopard 10.5.8 OS system.
    I just purchased the following:
    •  A new 1-TB Internal Hard Drive (My plan is to temporarly remove one of my internal scratch drives and plug this new drive in its place. This will be the drive that I will install Snow Leopard on as well as CS5 Design Premium Upgrade as well as migrate all my existing apps to from my current boot drive. Once everything looks like it is operating correctly, I will remove the current boot drive permanently, make this new drive the default boot drive and reinstall my scratch disk drive in the slot vacated by the current boot drive - at least that is my current plan)
    • CS5 Design Premium UPGRADE
    • Snow Leopard Install Disk
My question is what is the best method to attack this major overhaul?
    (1) Should I DEACTIVATE CS4 on the current boot disk before starting this install process?
    (2) Should leave CS4 ACTIVATED on the old drive, install Snow Leopard on the new drive, then migrate all my apps including CS4, then DEACTIVATE CS4 on the new drive and then install the CS5 UPGRADE?
I am totally confused on how to properly make this transfer?
Bottom line is that I want a clean install of Snow Leopard on the new internal drive and perform a proper install of CS5 Design Premium UPGRADE on that same drive.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    1. Deactivate CS4. It takes seconds.
    2. Install the new drive. Install Snow Leopard.
    3. If you still want to use CS4, install that followed by CS5. I would highly encourage this since if you do need to use CS4 down the road, you'll need to uninstall CS5 first as the suites need to be installed in order (unless something's changed in CS5).

  • Install Two Snow Leopard with boot camp

Has anyone tried to install on the same Mac two copies of Snow Leopard with bootcamp?
I want to keep one for general activities and one dedicated and tweaked for audio purposes.
    Thanks to all!
    Roberto

    You have a Mac Pro.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=194
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
You can install Windows on its own drive; you can have Mac OS on same drive or different.
You just can't have Windows OS on a partition that has higher partition number than 4, which includes hidden partitions also.
I keep Windows on its own hard drive. Then do what you want with your 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Fresh install of Snow Leopard - Itunes on External HD

    Hi
I recently upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard.  My itunes folder (including all playlists, apps, artwork etc) is located an external drive, as it was when I was running Tiger.
I did a clean install of SL.
How do I now get itunes to recognise the old folder, without creating a whole new folder.  I have over 120GB music, and don't have room on my HD to accommodate a whole fresh folder.
    Thanks,
    D

iTunes-Preferences-Advanced - uncheck 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library'.  This will keep your previous file structure and will leave the files where they originally reside, creating only a pointer for iTunes as to their location.  Then, just do a normal File-Add to Library-select the appropriate location-Open.

  • Will time machine HD be picked up on a fresh install on snow leopard?

Hi guys i am going to do a fresh install on my machine. I recently upgraded OS's from leopard using the upgrade install that just wrote over my existing setup. I didnt want to restore from my time machine but just wanted to drag files from my time machine HD manually after the fresh install but im concerned that the HD wont be picked up by the new system.
I just wanted to make sure that my old time machine backup and all files will be seen by the fresh install so i dont loose any data.
    Has anybody done this before?
    thanks Jamie

Time Machine puts special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, and if you copy them via the Finder you may have all sorts of locked file and/or permissions issues with them, especially if you have multiple users. Not to mention the problem of getting everything you need. Complex applications that came with their own installers, for example, will probably have to be re-installed (and any license/purchase keys re-entered).
If you want a fresh copy of OSX, just do the install again. If you want to get rid of old stuff in your user folder, you're probably much better off just deleting what you don't want.
Or erase your disk, install OSX, then use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer the data you want from your backups. See #19 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
I just wanted to make sure that my old time machine backup and all files will be seen by the fresh install so i dont loose any data.
If you replace all the data on your internal HD, your next Time Machine backup will be a full one -- everything on the internal HD will be backed-up again. So it may have to delete a lot of old backups to make room for the new one.
If your TM disk isn't well over the size of the data currently on your HD plus 120% of the data you put back on it, there won't be room for a new full backup. You'll have to erase the disk and let TM start over.
Either way, TM will, sooner or later, delete it's copies of anything you don't put back.

  • Installing iLife '08 from Tiger discs on a fresh install of Snow Leopard

I just had a brand new hard drive installed on my imac. I am currently installing Snow Leopard as I type this post. I purchased the $35 SL disc as I have iLife '08 on my Tiger (10.4) discs. Before I install iLife I would like to know if I have to put disc 1 before disc 2 or just disc 2? Will I be able to just do a software update check and install to bring iLife '08 up to date with the SL? I realize that it won't be iLife '09 but I am concerned about '08 being compatible with a fresh install of SL.

One more thing...I only have the microsoft office for mac 2004. If I install this, can I check for a software update that will bring me up to speed with Office?
    Yes, check here...

Also, will the software updates (if I check and run a software update) happen for iLife '08?
    Yes, they should.

  • I'd like to do a fresh install on snow leopard

I installed SL and I was surprised that it didn't wipe my drive clean first. How would I do a reformat then install 10.6?
    Thanks
    Jason

And then can I just take out the other drive that has leopard on it start using the new drive with SL on it?
Sure -- each startup volume is totally independent of every other one. And because of that, since you have a Mac Pro you could leave both drives in it & start up from either one, allowing you to use Leopard & all the files on the old drive without affecting what you do when started up from the Snow Leopard one.
Or, you could just erase the old drive & use it for additional storage or as another startup volume after installing Snow Leopard on it, too.

try this idea: Do a leopard install to an external disk then do a Disk Utility "restore" function to that clean partition. So you restore from the external to the internal partition. Should leave Bootcamp untouched.

  • IChat Inline Images No Longer Working After a Fresh Install of Snow Leopard

My roommate and I share the same computer network and iChat through Bonjour. This is mostly for us to drop data to each other as we both work - urls, images, etc. He upgraded to Snow Leopard as a completely fresh upgrade and reinstalled his existing software with no new software added. As soon as he upgraded, he could no longer receive inline images from me, and he has to go into the file transfer window to see the images. I can see inline images from him with no problems. I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard at this time. How do we fix his image problem?

I have not set my Snow Leopard computer to Not Start Up iChat if it is Quit (unstarted on computer start up) when someone IMs me. (Off line Messaging.)
I get sent a File when I am Off line on a Sunday if I miss a particular group chat on Saturdays.
I never seem to get a Chat started as this Group Chat has finished.
The Last Group chat I was in though does pop up as per my Setting for Saved Transcripts.
It is a File not a pic.
It is not "in a Chat" either.
I am not sure how close my situation is to what you describe as to Closed Windows for the Bonjour Buddy list or other factors (there is no Off Line Messaging for Bonjour but the Buddy List Window can be closed)
    I regard it a a partial replication.
    It may give clues.

  • I upgraded to Snow Leopard, made a change to Address Book that I need to correct, tried to use Time Machine to find the prior version and it keeps pulling up the later ones info. How do I use Time Machine to restore Address Book from a few hours ago?

This morning, I upgraded to Snow Leopard from v10.5.8. Then, I exported 11 contacts from our old Now Contact database, intending to import that info into Address Book. It was an experiment, as we have 1199 contacts in 20+ categories and want to eventually get them into Bento from Address Book. The export automatically created a file called Export.vcf on the desktop, after I highlighted the 11 contacts. I tried to look at the info, but when clicked it opens Address Book, which then simply asked if I wanted to import the 11 contacts to it. I clicked yes. Then in checking Address Book 7, not 11 contacts appeared. I clicked on "All Contacts" and there were 1630. We only have 1199, so where did the extra 400+ come from? Since I had already clicked twice on the Address Book window, I couldn't undo the import. So I thought 'Ok, I'll trash Address Book and go to Time Machine, find Address Book, go to right after the upgrade to SL, hit Restore and bingo. Nope. I keep getting the post-import info, not pre. Con someone direct me to a solution? I want to get rid of the import contacts plus the extra 300 or so ( I already had a hundred or so in several categories)? Then, I need to figure out (1) why ALL the old records were exported from Now Contact, (2) where they were hiding in that .vcf file when Address Book recognized that I only wanted to export 11, (3) why Address Book showed only 7 imports in the "Last Import" group, but showed ALL my contacts in the "All Contact" group, even though they should nearly all have been safely untouched in the Now Contact DBase file. PS, I am not especially computer savvy. Thanks for any enlightenment.

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • The main problem I am having is just opening and completing my emails. The screen freezes and I can't do anything but minimize and close.

After I close the window/s the report error window pops up . Then the next one which tells me the report was sent. Then the options to go further and so I came here today and Now I have done what you said to do so far. I even updated Acrobat reader and Flash player. I have used Mozilla Firefox for years and never had any trouble like this. This is the way windows behaves on a regular basis and is why I changed to Linux for years. I got this computer a couple years ago and did not have any trouble. Recently I have this to deal with several times every day. I cannot close the window in upper right corner without bringing up more error windows. So I minimize and close at the bottom. It still takes way too long, but it finally closes. I hope this helps you , I don't know what else I could tell you, Thank s for your time.

  • My laptop shuts down immediately when i unplug the charger

Okay so I got my macbook air laptop about six months ago, so it's relatively new. About a month ago the harddrive inside failed and i took it to the aple store and they replaced the harddrive free of charge since i was still under the year warranty. I lost all my data since i didn't back it up but it worked normally after that. Now, about a month later, I'm having this charging problem. My computer charges very very slowly when its plugged in (i think it charged about 7 percent over like 15 hours), and the second i unplug the charger, the computer shuts down. I tried looking around the internet for solutions and some people with the same problem say they have like a red or black x where the battery is, but nothing looks out of the ordinary on mine except for the fact that it charges so slowly. In all the time that I've had and used it it's only gone fully dead and shut off by itself a few times (what i mean is that, i almost never let it go completely uncharged, when it was low on battery i charged it instead of letting it die). Also, when i unplug the charger, right before my laptop shuts down, i can see that the battery percentage without the cord plugged in is 0 percent even though that makes no sense because when the charger is in it says 85 percent. The only thing i can think of that I've been doing differently on my computer recently is that two days ago i couldn't find the wall piece for my iphone charger so i charged it via the usb port in my computer a few times. I didn't think this would affect my computer though? This could be totally unrelated, but it's the only thing i can think of that's different than usual. Also, the computer works totally fine when the charger is plugged in. I've had this problem for a few days now and i think it's getting worse. When it first started, the computer would only shut down a few minutes after i unplugged the charger, but now it shuts down within seconds of the charger coming out. I'm very hesitant to open the computer up because I'm not the best with computers and I'm afraid I might mess something up inside. If it really is a problem with the battery and it has to be replaced, I guess that's okay because I'm still under warranty, but I'd prefer if i could fix this on my own. Thankyou so much for your help and all answers are appreciated

Simple, You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix. So you need to take it back in to an Apple store and have it fixed by Apple. If it is still within it's one year warranty period it will be free.
If you khaven't bought the Apple care Extended Warranty, Applecare, then I suggest you do that before the standard one year warranty runs out. You can't buy it after that one year warranty runs out and to fix any Mac out of warranty is Very Expensive.

  • MacBook shuts down immediately both when power button is pressed and when lid is closed

    Hey there,
The mentioned issues have happened to me for a couple of years or so. Specifically, when I press the power button it shuts down right away along with a click. Same happens when it sleeps; the light starts glowing and before a full seconds passes, I hear the same click and it shuts down. It started around the same time my battery died out of nowhere so I always attributed it to that. Now I got a new battery and it's still there. I tried resetting the SMC with both methods. The built-in keyboard had coffee spilled on it years ago so it doesn't really work, but I tried the key combination anyway. It didn't fix the problem, so I tried unplugging the battery and holding the power button. That didn't work either. What could be causing this issue?
    Thank you.

Your problem is way more complex, here's my standard answer:
"Whenever a liquid spill occurs the first thing that has to happen is the laptop should be shut down immediately. All power must be removed as soon as possible. It is especially important that the battery be disconnected and removed.
All affected parts must be removed from the laptop. No attempt should be made to start/restart the computer since this could potentially damage the logic board beyond all repair.
Then all affected parts would be washed in deionized water and blown dry with compressed air. (In a water spill the deionized water is probably not as critical. Depends on the mineral content of the water.) and blown dry with compressed air. This is especially true of the large chips on the logic board. Water can wick under them and cause havoc.
The logic board should be placed in a drying/dehumidifing oven for at least two days. Longer depending on the spill.
The keyboard is a separate matter."
Also red wine would be one of the worst things you could spill on your computer.

  • Grey message popping up telling me to shut down immediately?

    Hi All,
This message has only started popping up in the last month. Basically this grey and white message tells me that I need to shut down immediately by holding the power button (in many languages too!). Everything else is disabled and the only thing I can do is "shut down". This isn't a major problem, but want to know if there is something somewhere else that is contributing to this and is it something I should be concerned about??
    Many thanks in advance.
