Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
have a few questions:
1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
iChat works well.
3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
No idea.
4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.

Decide which device will be changing accounts. On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom). Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it.

I just got a new Imac, and downloaded files from my old PC. Now, when I go to Finder, I have 1500 files in an area called developer. What is this, and can they be deleted? There are also 78 files listed as Other! Most of these files I do not recognize.

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...

I have an iPad w iTunes. My hubby just got a new nano and I'd like to sync our music to his nano, but dont know how. Help we've already taken a great mp3 back to exchange it for this nano.

There is no way to share your music on the iPad to his Nano without a computer - that I can think of anyway. No third party application will work unless both devices have WiFi and many of them require a computer as well.
I would suggest downloading iTunes on your PC, transfer your music to the iTunes library and then sync the Nano.
Maybe I am missing something but I don't think this is possible as you are currently set up.

Just got a new imac and it works great

Just got my imac week 00 and it works great. have not seen one flickero or yellow tinge issue. The hard drive is a segate and it is very quiet. I just love the computer.
P.S. what should my first piece of software for it be?

I would invest in an external HD (highest capacity you can afford) - TM BackUp.
I use SuperDuper & Onyx which I find excellent, but ONLY you know what type of App you want/need.

If you are new to Macs you may well have lots of ?'s .. run your Mac as it is until you are happy with the unit, then add. The Repair Permissions facility (Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility) is a useful tool, when I first went over to Macs I was told, Repair Permissions Before & After ALL Updates..
I also follow that rule after installing new Apps...L

Your library will ONLY be where you put it. It will not magically appear anywhere.
Have you copied to from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer?
You can sign into your account from any computer with itunes. This has nothing to do with your library. Your library resides on your computer and you have to move/copy it wherever you want it.

The second I open it the pinwheel starts. I have to force quit it every time. I literally cannot do anything in it.

Hey guys i figured it out. I called support and they helped me.
Turn your wireless or any other internet connection off and restart your computer.
Make sure it is still off when it starts back up.
Open mail > file > preferences > accounts and remove the @me or mobile me email from the(by selecting the account and clicking on the little "-" button at the bottom.
Go into your system preferences into icloud and sign out then uncheck icloud from the mail preferences.
Restart your computer again
Turn on wifi/internet connection and open mail.
Everything should load better
Then add your icloud account back to mail if you need it and sign back into icloud.

I just got a new iMac and quicktime is acting weird

Movie files from the internet are downloading to the desktop before they play and if it is a wmv file it just opens text edit and shows jibberish.
on my macbook it opens a quicktime window and downloads to that and plays there, or in the webpage in an imbedded player.
how do i go back to playing in an imbedded or a quicktime player window instead of default downloading?
O and i almost forgot, im already downloading flip 4 mac to solve the wmv problem

Hi John....glad you figured it out. I found that F4M works for most wmv content, but there are a few other items you might want to have in your video toolkit. Occasionally, content providers will offer up variations on the wmv theme and these things may help:
VLC
Perian
Streamclip

That's fine If you want to put all your faith in your Internet connection. I don't - my preferred safety net is a bootable clone which will allow me to boot from another disk and doesn't require a several hour download which is a waste of time, resources, and wasting my monthly cap.

That is another problem not related to the Mac OS X version you are trying to use.
Three beeps at startup means you have a bad ram module in the computer. Did you install the ram or did it come from another owner this way? The first problem you need to solve is the bad ram.
When the iMac starts, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Memory and see what the report is on the memory...does the iMac report all memory modules that have been installed as OK or does it show bad memory? If there is not any information, you then need to remove the memory modules and restart one at a time to see which is bad.
On the bottom of the screen there should be a small door that you can remove with a small screw driver. You need to lay the iMac flat, disconnect the power cord, remove that small door and remove the memory modules. You can then put two in (if it has four) and see if it starts without the beeps. Do that with each module so you find out which is bad. Once you know the bad memory, you can buy a new module, just like the ones installed, so the iMac starts without the beeps.
Next, you cannot use a DVD for another computer for your iMac unless it is from one that is identical to yours. So, you need to talk to Apple and have them send the DVD for your particular iMac.
