Just terrible

I downloaded Firefox today. After installation, I tried to open it.
I get an error message. "A copy of firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."
...which is pretty ridiculous. There is no copy of firefox already open, as this is a new computer & have never used Firefox prior.
I looked at some forums online, none of which helped me. My attempts to get technical support on the Mozzila website were to no avail. I even tried to contact Firefox and give them feedback on this bug, but I need to be using Firefox to even do so! Haha unbelievable.
I'm not sure what kind of browser Mozzilla is trying to create here, but from what I can gather from my experience it's probably the worst browser to ever exist.
Get your ****ing sh*t together! ***application deleted indefinitely***

Sorry this advice is going to be too late for you ''firefoxsucks123, but it may help others.''
Similar types of errors are sometimes known to occur if firefox does not close down properly, if that is happening you need to find the process for firefox and maybe also plugincontainer and kill them.
* see [[firefox hangs]] <-- clickable link -- (blue) ---
If the problem is something in your profile, or a locked profile, troubleshooting by trying a new profile may help. If necessary settings etc may be transferred later to a new profile.
* see [[firefox is already running but is not responding]]
In other cases a new clean reinstall may be required, as appears to have been the case in this discussion thread from last year, which initially related to using Firefox on a Mac

  • This never ends, awful just terrible.

Let's start with last year.. Had a normal bt broadband, it was awful. Would never connect, the router would start flashing orange lights randomly and just.. A dead case.
After thinking about it I thought to upgrade to infinity, thought maybe the router is faulty or something, maybe it will work.
NOW, a whole year of.. Misery!!! I can't play one online game without having to close it as the internet is lost.
Called up BT India good hundred times, yes my lights are fine, yes te cables are plugged in, and no I'm not gonna cable every internet-needing device in my house, as this is 21st century and I don't want to buy 200M of 10cables!! Firstly it took a whole week of calling for them to put me in a different channel, as people around me were in the same wifi channel therefore it was conflicting and causing problems, but even so now.. It normally goes off randomly and takes a couple of hours to go back up, yeah the internet is still present, but it doesn't load anything, I mean this is a very expensive internet therefore I expected a great service and I do get it when it's working, but when it randomly goes off and I gotta spend literally hours speaking with BT India, it's not appealing at all, worse of all they don't even fix the problem, but recommend another few months of contract so that they could send in engineers and whatnot!
My phone contracted internet at £10, 5x cheaper than the BT infinity MIGHT not be as fast, but it's reliable!! Doesn't randomly disappear, and I don't even need to carry a router around.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My phone line isn't faulty, I'm sure of it.
I can't run the tests without internet can I? Mind you when I make the connection wired, it's all fine, but then I'd have to sit in my corridor which isn't fine at all.
You make it sound like a prototype, when the broadband doesnt do this little mood swing oh his, the gaming quality is perfect, I couldn't ask for more! Many places at present day have wifi connection, restaurants, hotels and such and non of them expierence this problem, so why do I? Reading from other posts, I can only realise that this is either faulty equipment or congested lines, which is not my responsibility therefore I shouldn't have to worry about it, but what am I doing now?

  • Dont get me wrong I love the iphone but the photo upgrade is terrible. Loads extra albums you cant delete without being online again just terrible. Maybe Im just stupid.

Would love to be able to download an album from my computer then pick and choose at my leisure how and when to delete what I want. Am I missing something very simple here?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A photo print quality is terrible

If I print using the default of plain paper, change the quality to high and actually use plain paper, the quality is acceptible.  However, if I use photo paper, whether I change the paper setting to HP Photo Paper, Other Photo Papers, or leave it at plain paper, the quality is just terrible.  The ink is splotchy, the resolution - for lack of a better term - is gummy.  There is so much ink on the photo that it smears on my hands after sitting and drying for an hour.  The paper product I'm using is from Costco.  It's the Kirkland Professional Glossy Inkjet Photo Paper.  It worked beautifully in our Canon inkjet printer when printing high quality and selecting glossy photo paper or photo paper pro as the paper type.  What am I doing wrong?  Or is this printer not designed to print on photo paper?  Thanks.

The Officejet 8500 will print on photo paper, but you need photo paper designed for pigmented inks.  It sounds like you are using photo paper designed for dye based inks.  The Officejet 8500 uses pigmented inks which will not interact properly with the coatings on photo paper designed for dye based inks.

  • Using image processor from RAW format to JPEG, the images are suddenly very muted colour, greyish tone, and just awful looking.

Any ideas as to why, when I am converting a group of images through image processor into JPEG, the resulting images are AWFUL.  I have been using this process for years without a concern, and suddenly the JPEG files are very greyish, muted tones and just terrible looking… HELP!  I'm WAY too busy right now to be dealing with this and having to manually save each image to JPEG

Which Color Space are the images in?
    What are your Color Settings?

  • Vista on iMac terrible sound

I've installed vista on a few 24" iMacs. The sound produced under vista is just terrible (metallic echo), on all of them. I've used the drivers delivered with OSX 10.5.0.
Are ther any better drivers or any settings that produce better audio?
btw. The sound under OS X is fine.

I have noticed that too. I think it sounds a little better if you go to Control Panel > Sound > Speakers > Advanced and set the Default Format to 24 bit, 192000 Hz. The default is 16 bit, 44100 Hz so that might something that made it sound bad. I took a screenshot of what I was doing at http://tinyurl.com/5mb4pp.
    Hope this helps.

  • Never again, your product is terrible.

I have had my z10 for 1 year and three months. In that time I have had to take two back to verizon because they stopped working (just went black) Now I get up today, check my phone and black, dead. I have hit my limit with your terribly constructed product. 3 times in a little over a year is unacceptable. I can't wait to here what verizon has to say, but your company should be ashamed at the suspect product you are selling. I will tell everyone I know how poor Blackberry is. Just awful.

Funny, I found several other threads of people with the same problem.
Not at all surprising. After all, perfection cannot be attained. But, it is difficult (impossible?) to do any statistical analysis from that data. How many out of how many have this problem? Is it 50%? 1%? Less than 1%? Some infinitesimally small value? We here have no way of knowing.
And, yet, it all remains moot. Your service and support, on a formal basis, are exactly as you agreed upon making your purchase...through your service provider. It is they who should be "making good" on your situation. Consider...it is via their channel that you have been through so many defective devices...but they control their distribution channels, and hence only they can dig deeper into those channels to see if you are just terribly unlucky or if perhaps they indeed have a bad batch somewhere. Further, if you can convince them that there is indeed a systemic issue, then their "voice" will be much "louder" to BB than yours.
Hence, I strongly encourage you, if you indeed have any desire to do so, to pursue the matter via your formal support channel. Otherwise, if you have elected (as you started with) to move on, then we wish you well on that journey and will turn our attentions back to those who seek support and assistance for the BB device that they elect to retain.

  • Scrubbing through footage is terribly slow!!!???

Ive just recently bought the adobe cloud, and was wanting to switch from FCP to premiere cs6. But...... first thing ive notices is how terribly slow it is scrubbing through footage on the timeline. Playback is fine, but scrubbing through footage and trying to find an inpoint is painful.  Also, one of the biggest draw cards was the ability to edit native files from the Canon 5D mk2. This is even worse! Once again, playback is fine, but scrubbing through the timeline is just terrible.  I didn't have this problem in FCP... is there something i'm doing wrong?

The short answer: spend hundreds or over a thousand dollars on one of the few outdated Nvidia cards with CUDA that work in a Mac.
The long answer: ditch the Mac and assemble a PC with top of the line components. I was a Mac devotee until I realized that I could have a computer faster than any Mac if I bought high quality components and put it together myself. You don't need to have a degree in computer science, just some knowledge that you can easily acquire online. The three Macs I had all had different problems and were no better than brand PCs that sold for about 3/4s of the price. They were of course better than the piece of junk Dells or Compaqs that sold at Walmart for $400, or even the $1,200 models, but I got fed up with paying top dollar for a product that didn't deserve it.
The graphics and video industry has this very erroneous notion that if you want to do anything serious in those fields you need a Mac. At one point many years ago that was true, but it hasn't been for several years now. Apple is making the bulk of their money with the iPhones, iPads and iEverything else but Mac towers, so that line has been almost abandoned completely. The exterior is still a design from 2002, and the interior from 2010. The "renewed" 2012 models are a joke, a tiny speed bump and you have to pay $5,000 if you want one that is barely decent. Even worse, even though in recent years Adobe Premiere and many plugins started making extensive use of CUDA technology, Mac Pros still come with only choices of outdated Radeon cards, which are only good for games and maybe some stuff in After Effects but that's it. If you want any sort of an Nvidia card in a Mac, you have to spend thousands on one of the few Quadros that are compatible with Macs, all of them outdated cards, unless you download a hacked driver to make any Nvidia card work, but I wouldn't trust my editing workstation to a hacked driver.
On the PC side, you have several more choices. You can put together a system that will be equal or faster or to any MacPro. To give you an idea, my current system, which has an Intel i7 3930k CPU (six cores at 3.2 GHz but that go up to 4 Ghz each with Turbo), 32 GB of Corsair RAM, and an Nvidia GTX570 graphics card, gives me a Cinebench R11.5 score of 52.91 fps for Open GL and 11.28 pts for CPU render. I was just reading a forum in which a guy that ran the same version of Cinebench on his MacPro with the dual 2.40 Ghz 6 core CPUs(that's 12 physical cores) and what I assume is the stock Radeon graphics card gets 30.75 fps OpenGL and 12.5 CPU. The MacPro may be marginally faster for CPU render than my machine, but much slower for GPU, which is almost as important these days. And checking the current prices at the Apple store, he paid at least $3,800 for that computer, while I paid less than $2,000 for mine.
Five years ago I started assembling my computers, and they have been the fastest and most reliable computers I've ever had. Better than any Mac or brand PC I've ever had, and with the advantage that every two or three years I can upgrade it and still use some components, instead of having to buy a whole new computer like you would do with a Mac.
The only downside to self assembled PCs currently is that as long as Microsoft keeps selling Windows 7 Pro, you're fine, but if they stop and you have to install that abomination of technology that is Windows 8, then the choice is not so clear. But, Windows XP was released in 2001 and millions of computers around the world still use it just fine, so I don't see MS ending sales of Windows 7 anytime soon, because Windows 8 is a toy for tablets, but as a professional desktop OS is a joke, and I'm sure that the hundreds of articles and angry forum posts online about it must have reached them. But at least for now, the choice is very clear, stay away from Apple and go with self assembled PCs, and if you don't know how to assemble one, there are small businesses that do it for you. Believe me, anybody who has the intelligence to edit video can assemble a PC, it's no more complicated than it was to assemble a Lego kit when you were 7.

  • Elements terrible slow

I just downloaded Elements 11  is is just terrible for slow. It taked like a minute to scroll between lines of photos in the manager. I am continually getting program not responding messages, to the point it is impossible to do anything. My OS is windows 8 pro.

Launch the Organizer and go to:
    Edit >> Preferences >> Media-Analysis
The uncheck all the boxes and click OK.
That usually improves performance whilst browsing or editing. You can turn on the background processes again at any time.

  • I have an Iad2 and ever since ios6-there are issues.I get occasional lock-ups and have to reboot. The WSJ app freezes when running their videos to the end. The only work-around is to stop the video before it's over. Worse than windows me !!!!!

My Ipad2 worked perfectly before ios6 upgrade. It now freezes occasionally and I have to reboot to get it to work. Also the WSJ app will now freeze if I try and run one of their videos that is imbedded in the article. My only work-around is to stop (press done) before the end of the video or I have to do a total reboot. The problems remind me of Windows ME . Will Apple resolve these issues or become more like Microsoft. Hopefully there will be a restore button in the future like Microsoft was forced to do because a lot of upgrades are just terrible. Am I crazy or are there other people having the same issues with ios6, or could this just be a coincidence and my ipad2 is starting to fail just when ios6 arrives ?

I know this will not help but, the bluetooth headset I purchased for my wife works great and it pairs with our car and our sound bar in the livingroom (Motorola Droid Razr) 98.72.16.XT912.Verizon.en.US
However I did not upgrade over the air but from a android web site and placed it on my external sd card. I believe this made the difference in why we had no issues and upgraded functionality has been great.
Please note when I mention these bluetooth devices I mean the Razr connects with no problems.
It also had no internet issues and none of the problems others have complained about in other threads.
unfortunately when you say thousands have these issues I cannot say that is accurate. The hope is when large numbers of owners have updated to the Jelly Bean and are complaining inmase then Motorola will issue a patch to verizon to get out to the affected users.
Of course now that Google owns Motorola Mobility and has laid off loads of workers it may never issue an os patch.

  • My N800 review

My full review with pics at http://reviews.phonereport.info
Cellphones have come a long way and so has Nokia. From being a paper factory to the biggest phone maker, Nokia is widening its products.
In one way Nokia is making a big mistake as people like convergence and Nokia is separating everything in this Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. By being a dedicated Internet Tablet it should be compatible with every type of Internet connectivity available, but it isn’t, it does not have GSM or UMTS. Unlike its rivals in the UMPC world like Flybook, Nokia has got experience in mobile connectivity but didn’t apply it. Other basic aspect of this Internet Tablet that I can point out in this beginning is that there are no business applications, such as our basic Word Processor or Spreadsheet.
But like its predecessor 770, this device for a beautiful screen size and resolution, and the hardware is improved.
The N800 is powered by a TI OMAP 2420 processor boasting 320 MHz of clockspeed, more than the 770 which has only 266 MHz. This device also carries a satisfying 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash memory, double of the 770.
A touchscreen is used to control the tablet, and two memory card slots, one MMC and one SD are used to provide extra storage. Besides that, it still got a camera that pops out, a built-in stand and a 3.5mm jack for headset and microphone.
The availability and the price aren’t very comfortable. I haven’t seen one in South Africa yet beside this one that Wom World sent me for a review, and the price is too much to ask for such a basic device.
First I saw this huge 4.1” touchscreen with keys on its left side and on top. It was very slim and light for its size. The dimensions are 75x144x13mm and it weighs 206g.
There is a joypad with 5-way navigation and a blue LED flashing only when the device is locked or when the battery is low. Below that there is a set of three keys: return, menu, and home keys. This keypad is not well built at all because it moves, it does not fit the housing properly.
If you look at the N800, you will see many speaker holes, which make you think that it is extremely loud. But you shouldn’t judge Nokias by their outwards appearance.
On the middle there is this huge widescreen boasting 800x480 resolution and strong colours, but there is too much glare and reflection, it can get hectic to watch a movie with your friends in a bus ride, as you will constantly need to tilt and turn the device.
On the right side there is a slot for the stylus, a 3.5mm jack with 3 channels, an N-Series charger pin, and if you lift up the stand, there is a miniUSB port. This isn’t convenient as I sometimes like to leave my phones lying down during data transfer, and this feature does not let me do that.
On the left side there is a camera that is hidden and you need to push inside so that the spring mechanism releases it and activates GTalk, it can rotate but it’s only for video calls so it’s a VGA.
On the top, from left to right, there is a zoom out, fullscreen, zoom in button sets, and then there is an ON/OFF button. On the middle there is a high-sensitive microphone for VoIP. Under the N800 there is SD/miniSD/microSD slot that has a sensor when you open the slot, it deactivates the card. If you put the provided miniSD, its fine, but with your own microSD with adaptor, it’s almost impossible to remove it, in fact, it kept mine inside and I cannot remove it.
The stand is a good addition to the tablet, there are two positions, on one you can watch a movie as it sits perpendicular to the surface, on the other you can put it on your desk and work with it as it’s at an angle.
The back cover doesn’t fit the housing and it moves like the keypad. Underneath the cover there is a BP-5L 1500mAH battery that does satisfy the needs of most people. Average standby time is 110 hours, and use time is around 6 hours, tested by me. There is also a MMC slot and a cover sensor, that tells the device if the back cover is open or not.
The Nokia N800 runs off Linux Maemo Internet Tablet OS 2007. Not a dynamic Operating System at all. First of all, a bad choice from Nokia, as they should stick to Symbian, they are good at it, and people like it. I do not blame Nokia, they wanted to change, but there only problem is that they did not do it properly. It’s not their first Internet Tablet, I never saw the 770, but if it was like this, they didn’t learn much out of it. Clearly this device is intended to people who want to try something new.
There is an awesome finger recognition system, the device detects if you tap with the stylus or with the finger. If you tap with the finger, larger icons appear and a fullscreen keyboard appears, where you can use both hands to tap letters, and it is really cool because instead of hearing the keys click, you hear the virtual sound. With the stylus, a small keyboard appears where you can use either keys or handwriting recognition. Strange thing, there is no security codes or PIN.
The UI is very neat but complicated for beginners. Imagine your Windows Desktop with absolutely nothing, only your Start button and System Tray. There is a set of icons in the left, a small taskbar on top, and the rest of desktop is customizable with plugins such as Google Search and Clock. The icons have whatsoever no labels, so you have to guess what they are for, and that’s irritating for beginners.
There is world icon which has a set of web options and bookmarks, the second icon is practically dedicated to Google Talk but also has email options. Finally the third icon has something like your Start > All programs menu.
In that Programs Icon, you find Media Player, RSS Feed Reader, Images, File Manager, and Skype. Beneath that, there are a set of Folders:
    * Web – has Web itself and Bookmarks.
    * Contact – Contacts, e-mail (POP3 and IMAP4), Internet Call (VoIP), and IM (Google Talk).
    * Utilities – Calculator, Clock, Notes, PDF Reader, Sketch.
    * Games – Chess, Blocks, Mahjong, Marbles.
    * Tools – Application Manager, Backup/Restore, Control Panel, Connection Manager, Teach Handwriting.
    * Extras – Maemo Pad, Camera, Media Streamer, Rdesktop.
    * Connection – EarthLink.
    * Search.
    * Help.
The Media Player was disappointing on the audio side, it does support most formats: M3U and PLS playlists, partially on ASX, WAX, WVX and WPL. Supports AAC, AMR, AWB, M4A, MP2, MP3, RA, WAV, WMA. It streams AAC, AMR, AWB, M4A, MP3, MP2, RA, and WAV. On the video side it supports AVI, 3GP MP4, MPE, MPEG, MPG, EM, RMVB and RV. This all seems very good until you deal with it. There is no equalizer, there is no visualization. SRS is not present and the earphones have no bass feeling. The player interacts positively with MP3s but blanks out on AAC, it does not show time or seek bar, it just plays the track.
The video player is simply great, files in DivX are played in their full resolution and perfect colour, just make sure you do not play movies while the sun is out, the glare is terrible.
For beginners the video player will not make a difference as there is no tool to convert videos, there is no CD such as Nokia PC Suite. Most people do not have time to look for a suitable N800 converter, as most of them did not even work properly according to my tests.
You can minimize the music player while browsing the internet. Other basic features of the player are shuffle and repeat. Another bad thing is that while playing music, it goes to screensaver mode so we cannot pause or use other controls.
These entire Contacts feature is more like a Google Talk package.
I see Nokia joining Microsoft’s Windows Live for Symbian OS but here it joins Google? Perhaps Microsoft wanted them to use Windows OS on the N800…
You can see all contacts and sort them by initials or you can group them. The chat feature is slow to start and the video feature is totally useless because Google Talk does not support video chat. You can also block contacts and merge them. Importing and exporting is also possible and it supports Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Gmail, vCard, and Nokia phones. You can set presence to On, Away, Busy and define if you want GTalk to login when the N800 establishes a connection.
The email client is detailed, lets you create unlimited accounts and has a detailed wizard for that purpose, even though Gmail was difficult to setup and Google did not mention N800 on their help pages. As any basic email client, you can retrieve attachments, save sent emails, save drafts, and have an outbox. It is possible to save signatures, but no HTML or images on them. There is also an option to search messages.
The email client tries to sync email when you access the program even if there is no connection. To send emails is very fast and contains basic word editing features such as changing fonts.
Internet Calling is close to perfect in both GTalk and Skype, but mostly on Skype as Google Talk always has errors on it.
Skype is a good add-on to the device, it tells you the balance available and it even lets you buy credit. It’s loaded with features except video call. You can setup sounds like the computer version, leave Skype on the background, receive calls from non-internet numbers, establish voicemail and even call forwarding. It is fast logging in, can save your password or even create an account if you do not own one.
The PDF reader is complete with zoom options, fullscreen, and with document sending options, you can choose if you want to open images or not and even save the page as another name.
The Notes application is a simple word processor with font chooser, bullets and few other options, you can also search for words in the text. The file is not saved as a .doc.
If you are bored or feeling creative, you can always draw pictures or customize the ones you have with different brush thickness and custom colours. The program reminds you to save before quitting.
All games are built in 3D but there are no advanced games such as car racing, where the processor could help getting some quality across.
A very well built Chess game is present with tips and levels. There is a Blocks game that plays in portrait mode. Mahjong is also interactive and with clues. Lastly there is Marbles, where you can get to do a combination of marbles in a labyrinth which I find very complicated.
The Application Manager is not only about uninstalling applications, it lets you browse installable applications, there are 100s of them which can bring some usability on the device. As I am writing this, I notice video centres, and Ogg Vorbis codecs to install on the phone, but no simulation games, only puzzles.
The Control Panel has pretty much everything needed to manage the N800, it is possible to pair with a Bluetooth Keyboard, set the MMC to act as RAM, define connection method as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and even train handwriting recognition.
The Extras it was me who pretty much installed them, there is Camera, to take photos with the poor camera quality and resolution. Media Streamer does its job pretty well, and same about Internet Radio, although they are soft in volume, and there is Maemo Mapper that is brilliant but slow GPS guiding application, works with external GPS but does not come with preloaded maps, but lets you stream maps from various sources such as Google Earth.
If after all this you think the software can be dynamic, think again as no other OS is compatible with this, and it lacks on what any businessman would need in such a device, Office applications.
For this device to achieve its main goal it needs powerful communication skills, and it does. It has the best Wi-Fi antenna I have tried, it detects wireless networks that not even my notebook or my N95 can. It can be set to 100mW or 10mW and it supports all security protocols in 802.11b/g networks.
There is also a Bluetooth connection for the device to connect via a phone and use Data Cal or Packet Access. You can use the N800 to explore devices that support OBEX file transfer, but you cannot browse the N800 via OBEX, only use it for Object Push.
The only way for a computer to browse the two memory cards in the n800 is mass storage mode. There is no TV-out either, but the high-resolution screen is enough for everything, but a docking station would have been useful.
The sound is just terrible, there are stereo speakers but they are light-years away from loudness, in music or movies. Thankfully there is a 3.5mm jack and stereo earphones are supplied, or else it would be useless to have a media player. With two memory card ports you could have around 10GB of space, if you can afford it, perhaps and internal hard drive would have been useful. For basic sounds like browsing the internet, the speakers are enough but VoIP sounds too soft in the Tablet, a real waste of potential.
Now for the main part of the device, the Internet, or Web as Nokia calls it. Obviously multipage browsing is supported which makes browsing easier and faster. Fullscreen browsing is the best part with the lovely touchscreen. Media Streaming is fast and high quality so it depends on the server for the speed provided. Javascript is supported as well so no internet content is missed. On the security side, SSL2 is possible, but there is no parental lock. You can manage bookmarks like a proper browser or email webpages. There is even an option to set the current page as home. Zooming helps navigation, but what really makes it fun is thumb dragging like the iPhone.
The History is divided in dates, and plug-ins can be installed such as Shockwave Flash. I have no complaints about the browser, its simply wonderful.
There isnt much else to talk about, the N800 really made news in my community as they don’t sell them in South Africa, but now its time to give it back to Wom World. I believe that with time the OS will improve and new applications will come up. Im really looking for an upgrade with a keyboard in the box, a high-end game, and most importantly, other application. (I know much of this is coming…soon).
Advantages: Excellent web browser, powerful Wi-Fi antenna, 2 memory card slots, 3.5mm jack, high resolution, VoIP, DivX player.
Disadvantages: No keyboard, very soft speakers, no hard drive, low spec camera, non-dynamic OS, no video converter, no Office applications.

Remote doesn't work No longer has remote feature after Lollipop update to Galaxy S5
Mike de Gouveia February 8, 2015
Not compatible with Android L This was an OK app before I updated my S5 to lollipop. It was a bit glitchy with scheduling recordings and scrolling through TV listings before, but now it is just terrible and does not even allow me to use the app as a remote control and is always crashing. I'm keeping the app because I'm hopeful that they will resolve the compatibility issues because it is pretty convenient having an app running off the WiFi to control the DVR. I will submit a new review once they do.

"restore to factory settings and try again." I contacted FiOS support because after updating my S5 to Lollipop, the app would no longer recognize that I was connected to my FiOS router. As a result, I couldn't change the channels on my FiOS set top box or watch FiOS programs on my phone

Please fix the Lollipop S5 issue The remote portion is the only reason to have this app, and since it had been rendered useless ever since Lollipop was pushed - I have to rate 1 star. Once fixed I will gladly update

  • How do you tell if an iPod is counterfeit?

    Hi,
I have wanted an iPod for a while, and I thought I'd get my feet wet by buying a used one before I jumped in and bought a new one. I went out to eBay and purchased a 3rd generation iPod Nano (8GB). There were some problems with the auction that made me suspicious of the seller (I won't go into those here) but ultimately I received the iPod. It looked like it was brand new, coming in a little plastic case with everything enclosed (USB cable, earplugs, and the Nano itself). It even had the protective plastic stickers on the front and back.
The outer packaging looked fine. My first alarm bells rang when I started looking at the little 'Quick Start' booklet. The words in the booklet are English, but the grammar is terrible - it looks like it was translated from another language using a computer program that wasn't too good. For instance, the 'Play/Pause' button is documented on the first page as 'Broadcast/Pause'. The first actual sentence in the guide is "Return can from the CD CD ducting music." - (Judging by the graphic above I would guess that this means "You can copy music from a CD.").
Then I thought, OK, what the heck, maybe the little Quick Start guide is just terrible. I downloaded iTunes and installed it (worked just fine), but iTunes wouldn't recognize the device (which shows up as a USB mass storage device 'Removable drive' under My Computer). I then registered the iPod using the serial number on the back of device (that worked, my only ray of hope so far). I ran through a bunch of diagnostics, etc. Did as much of the 5 R's as I could (since iTunes never shows the device as a source I couldn't do some steps, like restore, but 'Reset' seemed to reset the device, but not to make it show up in iTunes). I restarted the iPod service, etc. Still nothing. Then I tried to get some more detailed help from apple support. I notice that I could do support by serial number, so I entered the serial number from the back of the device again and I got a support screen for 1st/2nd generation iPod Nanos! 3rd generation is physically pretty distinct from 1st/2nd generation, so I know that's not what I have. Then I got my next bad feeling when I noticed that the wording under the serial number on the back of the device (engraved into the metallooked a little weird. It reads: "Designed by Appls in Callfomia. Assemblsd in China". Finally, I entered my serial number in one other place on the support pages (I forget where) and it said that this item had been replaced, and I should enter the serial number for the replacement item instead. Obviously now I'm pretty concerned. Since all of this I've noticed that the serial number printed on the iPod Nano packaging does not match the serial number printed on the back of the iPod Nano itself, and the model numbers don't match either. (The model number on the packaging is A1236 and the model number on the iPod is A1137). Also, the packaging is for a silver version, and I have a black version. I guess it's obvious that the packaging is for a different iPod.
I apologize for the long note - my main questions are these:
    1) In your iPod Nano quick start guides, is the english understandable?
    2) On the back of your iPod Nano, does it say "Designed by Apple in California" or does it say "Designed by Appls in Callfomia"?
    3) If this is a counterfeit, is there someone in Apple that I should contact to help them track this kind of problem?
If this is a counterfeit it's pretty visually convincing (iPod/Apple logos look good, you have to read the fine print to notice something a little off).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    3) If this is a counterfeit, is there someone in Apple that I should contact to help them track this kind of problem?

  • Is there really a Cisco VPN client for Linux? _Really?_

    Hello folks,
I've finally after almost experiencing a brain aneurysm by trying to think too hard got my Cisco 881-SEC-K9 router properly configured for a multipoint IPSec VPN tunnel to my Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, so that hurdle is finally passed and I actually feel it was a very important milestone in my life somehow. I never thought I'd see the day I actually got my hands on a legitimate Cisco non-stink... erm.. I mean, non-linksys router. Now I just can't seem to find a 'client' VPN program for Linux. I'm currently running a Xen Hypervisor environment on openSUSE Linux because it's the only Linux distribution that completes all of my strenous requirements in a Linux server environment. It's also the most mature, and secure Linux on this planet, making it the most appreciable Linux distribution for my research needs.  Using NetworkManager is not really an option for a basic Linux server environment, and OpenVPN is just too confusing to comprehend for my tiny little head.  I've heard mention of some mysterious "Easy VPN" but after hours of digging online can't find any information about it, even the Cisco download link leads to a Page Not Found error.  I do see a Linux VPN API for the AnyConnect program, but is that an actual VPN client, or just an API?  It seems to want my money to download it but I don't have any money nor do I really know what it is because it's all secretive-like, closed source, and I can't even find a simple README file on it explaining what it is exactly.  I'm just an out-of-work software developer trying to connect to my home router for personal use and I can't really afford to fork over a million and a half dollars for a single program that I'm only going to need to download once in my lifetime that should have been included with the router in the first place. I more than likely won't even be able to figure out how to use the program anyways because I don't know anything about VPN connections which is why I bought this router so I can try to figure it all out as part of the not-for-profit open source, volunteer research I'm presently trying to conduct.  Is there some kind of evaluation or trial period for personal use? That would be really nice so I could at least figure out if I'm going to be able to figure it out or not.  I hate throwing money away when it's in such short supply these days. There's really no alternative to a Cisco router.  It's an absolute necessity for the things I'm trying to accomplish, so trying to settle for something else and going on with my life is not really an option. No, this is something I just need to face head on and get it over with.
    <Rant>
Maybe I have a little too much crazy in me for my own good, but I don't see why it should take so much money just to learn how to do something for personal reference, it's not really a skill I would ever use otherwise.  Wouldn't it be great if Cisco made their VPN client open source and free to the public to use and modify, to improve on, to learn and to grow and bring the whole world closer together as a community? Even the source code to the old discontinued Cisco VPN client could be used as a valuable learning tool for some poor starving college student or Open Source Software developer somewhere trying to get by on Ramen Noodles and Ramen Noodle Sauce on Toast (don't tell me you never thought about it).  Through the ripple effect, It would drastically improve sales over the course of time, because it would open the door to a whole new market where those who previously could not afford to participate now could. That's the true power of Open Source. It creates a more skilled work force for the future by openly contributing and sharing knowledge together. What if the next big internet technology and the solution to world tyranny - the solution to end all wars forever - were locked in the mind of an unemployed software developer who couldn't afford to upgrade their cisco router software or access the software they needed because it was closed source and required committing to an expensive service contract to download?  That would be just terrible, wouldn't it?  I guess there's no way to ever know for sure. I suppose I'd be just as happy if some kind soul out there could point me to an easy to use alternative to an always on VPN connection that runs in the background which doesn't require NetworkManager or having to spend days upon days digging through and trying to comprehend either some really poor or extremely complex documentation?  I apologize for all the run on sentences posed as questions, but I've just got some serious mental burnout from all of this, being unemployed is some hard work folks. I could really use a vacation.  Perhaps a camping trip to the coast is in order after I get this working, that sounds nice, doesn't it? Nothing like a good summer thunder storm on the ocean beach - far away from technology - to refresh the mind.
    </Rant>

I do tend to talk too much and I don't mince any words either.  What I am however, is really appreciative for the help. I know you hear that all the time, but you have no idea how much time and headache you just saved me.  I think vpnc might be just what I've been looking for, unless someone can think of a client for Linux that I might be able to throw a little further.  I'm very security minded now, after the backlash of Blackhat 2013, there's no telling which direction the internet might head next. Oh, you didn't hear? Well wether they realize it or not, DARPA basically declared war with other government agencies by releasing their own version of a spy program for civilians to use against the whoever -- possibly even the governmnet itself. They even went so far as to suggest it's private usage to blanket entire cities in information gathering. Civilians are a powerful foe, as they are not bound by the oath of office, any evidence they obtain is admissible in court, wether they know that or not. There's a very important reason for that. It's to prevent another civil war from ever happening, we shed enough blood the first time around less people forgot.  It's something that can and will be avoided because our civilization has advanced beyond the need for bloodshed. The courts have to obey the majority rule, no matter what. For the first time in history, cyberwarfare can reach into the physical world to cause serious damage to physical structures like the nuclear facility incident in Iran.  There's scarry bills trying to sneak through congress that are changing the landscape of technology forever for the entire world. We're at a pivotal point now where things can happen. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out over the next decade or so. No matter which way you look at it, just be preparerd to sell a whole lot of routers.

  • Animated gif color help

Hello, I shot a sequence of photos for a stopmotion and have been having issues with color.  It was shot on a green screen and so I used keylight to remove it, made the sequence, it all looks fine in AE, render it and when I open it afterward, the colors are off and pixelated and just terrible. I've tried both web and system colors and am just lost. The adobehelp site says that you can make your own color palette in photoshop if you need it and so I made one, but when I browse for it in AE, it doesn't recognize the file. It's very frustrating. Please help!

What exactly do you do? Sounds like you don't even understand how the GIF format (or any palette based format for that matter) works and what the limitations are and thus are using a completely wrong workflow. Anyway, you cannot load custom swatches/ palettes in AE, since it doesn't have an indexed color mode. Futile exercise. For the rest: Render a normal Quicktime, AVI or image sequence, import it into Photoshop as a video layer. Then export via Save for Web and Devices or Device Central. Any palette adjustmens can best be done there.
