Kde apps in gnome

I'm not sure what I'm missing here.. When I try using kde apps in gnome they all fail to launch, I'm confused about what Arch needs to run them. I have tried installing ktorrent and rosegarden. I get the same error on both:
/opt/kde/bin/ktorrent
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-4702' to 'kded'
kded: ERROR: Communication problem with kded, it probably crashed.
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-4693' to 'ktorrent'
ERROR: Communication problem with ktorrent, it probably crashed.
I guess I'm missing some depends or something, I tried searching forums and wiki but nothing...

When I logged out/in $PATH was updated and I can call the apps directly, also they got added to the gnome meny.. but guess what? still the same problem

Go to /opt/kde/share/applications/kde and insert OnlyShowIn=KDE into the desired files.

Well, I'm trying to check Gnome out, but I really need some guidence..
I'm having some issues running KDE apps, namely kxmame. It just terminates at a certain point. Is there a set of commands I can run in order for my environment to be KDE friendly?

  • Mute KDE Apps in Non KDE Environment (xfce4, gnome, ...)

    Hi guys!
I did not find anything useful about the following problem:
I use xfce4 and think it is great (no problem so far). In addition to that krusader is my top browser.
Ok I know that the slickness of xfce is lost if I use kde apps but here is my problem: Everytime I delete a file/dir my sound level goes up to 100% and the speakers (or the headphones) go *BLABLING*.
I know from here [1] and here [2] that this is due to KDE settings.
I don't want to install the whole KDE environment, start it up and untick the System Notifications from there. I want to install that one package that controls them.
On ubuntu the package is called systemsettings [3] but I did not find anything similar in the arch repository.
    Here is my uname: 3.18.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 7 08:44:05 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Maybe these installed packages are of some relevance:
    Xfce 4.12
    pulseaudio 6.0
    pulseaudio-alsa 2-3
    alsa-lib 1.0.29-1
lib32-libpulse 6.0-1 (not quite sure why I have a 32bit package here but I don't think that causes any trouble)
    krusader 2.4.0beta3-5
Thanks for any help and sorry if I did not found the same question here on this forum.
    Have a great day,
    Matt

  • Problem - diacretic letters in non-KDE apps under KDE

I'm using KDE (kdemod actually) with polish keyboard layout. This works fine for KDE-apps, but not for gimp and pidgin (and probably other gtk apps). I can't enter polish letters in them.
I should probably use some gnome config panel or something to change keyboard layout, but I don't want to install gnome. Which packages to install, why so many, what to do and why gnome does not use my KDE keyboard layout?
Last edited by dpc (2007-05-06 13:59:32)

I can use gnome-keyboard-properties and set keyboard layout. But this afects only current session, desipte good layout is set as default one.
Anything that I could throw into .kde/Autostart/ ?

  • How to remove all KDE app dependencies

Well i'm running gnome and i installed Amarok & Tellico, both of which are KDE apps. They installed a bunch of KDE dependencies with them, but upon removing the programs, their dependencies are still there it seems. I tried pacman -Rs amarok-base tellico, but it only removed the programs. Then i tried pacman -Rs kde which got rid of some but not all of KDE.
Is there a command where i can get rid of all traces of KDE? Don't need any bloat here

Try pacman -Qdt to get a list of orphan packages. See man pages for pacman. Besides that I don't know what you could do except from using the pacman log. Still I wouldn't go further than what pacman -Qdt would suggest. Every little MB isn't that crucial as it used to be.

  • To make KDE apps look like KDE apps

    Hi everybody!
I am very new to Arch so please don't be hard on me. :-)
I have some problem with looks of apps. I use Gnome but I also have Xfce and KDE installed. My KDE apps look like this:
As you can see - buttons of Gnome on KDE app. I want to make all apps look like the DE they belong. How do I do that?

I think that that it would be very hard to use Oxygen effects outside KDE (not kwin: oxygen style has it's own effects).
When you turn off those effects in KDE apps lok exactlly the same as on your image.
With effects they look like this:
Maybe someone has managed to „tweak" something.... hope so.

  • Good WM/DE for kde apps?

That is not KDE of course, It just became impossible to run in my machine, but I still like some apps that depend on some kde staff, like k3b and digikam, what would be a good host for kde applications? I would like to exclude also gnome, to much fat to have both in one in this old system. thanks for any comment.

    schen wrote:
Just use any one. The real integration is your qt/gtk theme. If you set the same qt look as the same as the gtk look, the apps will integrate. Tada!
I don't use any qt apps though, so you can always find some lightweight alternatives, like xfburn for cd/dvd burning and shotwell/fspot for photos.
I have inadvertantly found a way to have KDE apps decorated by GTK in Gnome.
I installed Arch to look at KDE 4.5, it ran decently, but I had some minor problems in the plasma-desktop that were annoying me, and so decided to check out gnome in Arch. Gnome works fine, but I noticed that Amarok, my prefered music player, was looking strange, and then I noticed it was actually using my current GTK theme. It looked fine just not what I was used to. ALso the fonts looked a little different than regular GTK apps probably because hinting was being applied twice. I can change my GTK theme and all the KDE apps change to it.
I couldn't really figure out what was going on, because I didn't think there was a way to do this except change the Qt theme to be close to GTK theme, and I hadn't installed anything for integration and my theme was the default oxygen.
Anyways the only thing that might account for it, is that when I checked my dmesg, gnome-appearance segfaults with an error in LibQtGui.so, it keeps on working and causes no other problems. I'm not sure this is the cause, but it's the only thing I can think of as an explanation. So far there are no functional problems or performance problems, and I run several kde apps, so it makes me wonder why this can't be done normally?

  • Alternative to KDE Apps

There are a few KDE apps that I would like to find lighter dependency alternatives for. Also, I don't want to pull down any gnome or xfce dependencies. Something really neutral is what I'd like. I'm already looking at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=48386 right now. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.
    Right now, I use:
    File Manager: PCManFM
    Samba/Share:_________
    Web: Firefox
    Term: urxvt
    Text(general): nano
    PDF:_________
    Office: OpenOffice.org
    CD/DVD:_________
    What I need to replace:
    Konqueror, for great samba support
K3B, best cd burning/ripping tool I know of.
Kate, awesome text editor, especially for multiple files.
KPDF, best pdf viewer I've ever used. Very clean, polished, and best working page preview/bookmarks pane I've seen.
    Any ideas?

    K3B:
I use wodim and growisofs directly these days. They work reliably (unless I screw up the options, that is), and they were not too hard to learn either. But it's not a click-click matter if you wanted that. For DVDs, there's also this:
    http://regis.damongeot.free.fr/tkdvd/
But it's not in the repos or AUR. Never used it...
    Kate:
Vim is light when it's running, but it's not light on dependencies. I still love it more than anything else (yes, even more than Kate). But depending on what you want to edit, you might find a more task-/language-specific editor which might have dependencies you already have (for example, Vim pulls in Python, which I need anyway, so it's okay).
    KPDF:
I use xpdf. It's reliable and it gets the job done, but it doesn't look too good, and it doesn't 'remember' the pages you were last reading. But it's till a good replacement. I've also used Adobe Reader, but it's just too heavy on resources, and it can sometimes lock my system randomly.

  • KDE apps in awesome: ugly and missing icons

    Hi,
I use awesome WM and now installed a KDE app (rkward). The problem: It looks like sh** and all the icons are missing.

  • KDE fonts under Gnome doesn't look good

Ok, most people complains about GTK fonts under KDE. I have the inverse problem, my kde apps doesn't look good into gnome.
If I run kde, the fonts are displayed properly with small size, but if I run gnome and the run a kde app, the fonts are very big.
When i run a gtk app under kde, the fonts are showed properly but it doesn't use my gnome theme.
Anyone have a solution on making kde apps looking good under gnome?

Even though it's the inverse problem, it's likely still the same solution.  Gnome has a Gconf setting for DPI.  Otherwise you change it as an option to X.  Where you do so depends on how you start up X though (startx, xdm, kdm, gdm, etc).  I'll post back once I'm in Gnome and tell you where you can change the DPI.

  • How can I use KDE apps in Openbox?

I like using Openbox because it fits very well in my netbook, it's fast and lightweight. I also like to use a good file manager, like Dolphin and a image viewer like Gwenview. I can perfectly run those apps in Openbox, but there is a dark side.
When I execute them, a bunch of extra processes come in, like knotify, kded4, khelper, kacpid, and a lot with "k"! I hate that because even after all the apps are closed, knotify (and the others) still running and consume about 90% of the CPU (specially knotify) when in normal use (without KDE apps), the average usage of it is about 10%
Is there any way to use a "standalone" Dolphin or Gwenview or any other KDE app?
    Thanks!

I use also some KDE applications in openbox, and I saw also the 7% cpu usage of knotify4 after the upgrade to KDE 4.6 with a new $HOME/.kde4.
I could suppress that the same way as mentioned in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=77531 post #2
ie choosing "No audio output" for the notifications.
I use regularly Konsole and play some KDE games; here are the KDE related processes running continuously :
    berbae 4400 1 0 10:32 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4: kdeinit4 Runnin e
    berbae 4402 4400 0 10:32 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4: klauncher [kdei e
    berbae 4404 1 0 10:32 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4: kded4 [kdeinit]
    root 4412 1 0 10:32 ? 00:01:31 /usr/lib/upower/upowerd
    berbae 4458 1 0 10:33 tty1 00:00:09 konsole
    berbae 4460 4458 0 10:33 pts/0 00:00:00 /bin/bash
    berbae 4562 1 0 10:44 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/knotify4
With these processes running I get 0-1% cpu usage, of course after the change with the notifications output.
Hope that will solve also your issue.

  • How can I create an application shortcut in the KDE App Launcher?

Please look up for *.desktop file structure, all you need to do is create a /usr/share/applications/komodo.desktop file with the appropriate content. You can start with any other desktop file as template.

Whenever I try to run any KDE apps in Openbox, fluxbox, XFCE etc. it gives me "no such file or directory" or "command not found" or what have you. Everything works fine in KDEmod but the only KDE app I've made work in anything else was ktorrent just for a test. It's like they don't even exist outside of KDE. good deal
If you want to configure your xfce menu, you can add .desktop files to /usr/share/applications.  k3b.desktop could be something like:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Name=K3b
    Exec=/opt/kde/bin/k3b
    Icon=/opt/kde/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/k3b.png
    Type=Application
    Categories=GTK;AudioVideo;
    Encoding=UTF-8
