Keep star-Rating of imported photos
is it possible to recognize the star-Rating of imported photos (from Aperture). Rating and key-wording was done in Aperture. After export and import to iPhoto kewords still there, but rating is zero for all images.
Rating is written in Exif-data and can be show in Apples Preview e.g. („star Rating: 3“)
Is there a possibility to transfer the rating to iPhoto (iLife 09 - iPhoto 8.1.2)
iPhoto doesn't read the rating field nor does it write to it. Send a feature request via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

Somehow my lightroom now puts a star rating upon import...
How do I get it to stop! I am not sure what happened...but now when I import my images, it adds a 5 star rating to them all...help..
The first place to check is your Metadata Preset you are applying on/just after import. Is it applying the stars?

Does my computer keep 2 copies of imported photos?
It is true that when I import photos from my digital camera into iPhoto, iPhoto stores a copy of the pictures which can be edited in my pictures folder, and then the original file is stored somewhere else on my computer?
No.
When you import pics with iPhoto they are copied into the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder. iPhoto has no ability to manage files anywhere outside of that folder.
Inside the Library there are your Original file, plus a thumbnail, which speeds up viewing in the iPhoto Window. If you edit the pic then the original is preserved and iPhoto performs the edits on a copy of it. That's it.

I can't seem to keep my star ratings on my files after I export them to JPG. My export settings are set to keep "All" metadata, but this doesn't seem to change it. Any ideas of what else might be happening? Thanks for your help.
Thanks Suzanne. I'm viewing in Photo Mechanic, & I do have save changes to XMP automatically set.

when trying to import photos in to lightroom i select the ones i want and then click import it shows the progress bar on top and says its importing but it will never finish. it will just keep kelling me its importing photos.
Try all of these steps in sequence
Quit Lightroom
Reboot your computer
Delete your preference file: Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5
Restart Lightroom -
One of the most important selection features the is "Star" rating.
How on earth can Apple stop supporting this feature ???
My iPhoto lib contains >100´000 photos. All of them are rated with stars. Dependent on the rating I distribute the photos on >20 apple devices in our family.
Many friends of mine do the same.
It´s time for a severe request to Apple to take over that feature from iPhoto to Photos. They should start to learn, that people that liked their previously released software have spent hundreds of hours to adapt their data with that software to their needs. I´m using Mac´s since 1984. Might be that I start thinking about using different systems if they continue to through away my efforts from the past...
If you dislike Apples latest moves and like this feature too you need to provide feedback to them on the following web page: www.apple.com/feedback
HorstRemember that star ratings are not part of standard metadata.

Lightroom Star Rating Loss on Import
Hello everyone!
Longtime LR user, new to the forums and looking for a bit of insight.
When shooting on deadline, I start my workflow by running my images through Photo Mechanic where I star rate, caption and FTP a few. Afterwards I typically head home and then import my images into LR for further processing and cataloging.
What I've discovered is that I will occasionally lose the star rating on about 65% - 75% of those images if I begin to evaluate the them immediately after they've been imported.
(Typically importing between 1000 - 3000 RAW images with "Minimal" previews.)
(Evaluate by showing larger previews or asking to just see starred images.)
This problem does not occur if I give LR about 7 to 10 minutes after I've imported the images and then ask to see only star rated images. When I give it that extra time after import, my star ratings will invariably show up every time without problem.
I have taken note of the fact that even when selecting "Minimal" previews LR will still "process" the files as I can see their color shifting photo after photo within grid mode as I sit in front of my computer. It is my presumption that it is during this time that LR is evaluating the XMP info and adding that info to the catalog. I presume this because it seems that after LR has completed this process all of my star rated images will show up.
If this is in fact what is happening, part of my problem is there is no way for me to determine when LR is done with this initial "processing". This is because it seems LR begins "processing" whichever images are currently being displayed. I know this because as I scroll down the grid of images I see the color shift to begin on the frames that I've just scrolled to. Consequently I have no way of determining when this initial "processing" is done other than to give LR 7 - 10 minutes.
I should also mention that I have on occasion quit LR, reopened the folder containing my images in Photo Mechanic and all of the star ratings show up as they should. I have then quit Photo Mechanic, restarted LR selected all the images and then prompted it to "Read Metadata from File" but it still does not adapt the star rating that is associated with each image.
The only way for me to fix this issue is by removing the folder containing the errored images, re-import it into LR, give LR 7 - 10 minutes to "process" it's contents, and hope that when I do go to look at only starred images it will have completed it's initial processing to reveal all of those images that have been star rated.
Re-reading this I see that it's a mouthful but do hope that you might be able to answer these questions:
1. Is it this "processing" that I'm waiting for Lightroom to complete upon initial in import?
2. Is there a way for me to tell when that "processing" is complete?
3. Why doesn't forcing LR to "Read Metadata from File" overcome this problem?
Currently running LR 3.4.1 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8.
Thank you sincerely for your help ( :

The new people icons in PSE11 & PSE12 are not the same as keywords. You could use them as the basis to add keywords (names) in PSE and perhaps write metadata to files. Then start over in Lightroom:
File >>New Catalog
Choose a new catalog name and save.
When the empty Lightroom catalog opens - try the import from PSE again. -
I have spent a ridiculously long time tagging photos in my iPhotos but I would now like to transfer all my photos to Elements Organizer and preserve all the work I had done.
From Adobe's help website (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/elementsorganizer/using/WS73c05ee9864270ea-417df45c129593bfa05 -8000.html) it says I can import the tags along with the photos but does not explain how:
"Elements Organizer 10 supports importing photos, along with their associated captions, tags, and ratings, from iPhoto. You also have the option to import information such as events and albums to maintain the organization of your library"
When I follow the steps outlined on the website my photos are imported but there are no tags attached to them. I am particularly interested in keeping my facial tags but I suppose it would be useful to know how to keep other keyword tags and ratings as well.
There was a previous question put out on the forums similar to this but it was unresolved and the person decided to just leave everything in iPhoto. I really would prefer to transfer all my photos to Elements Organizer. I don't like the way iPhoto organizes photos but I had to deal with it for several years before I bought Elements Photoshop with built-in Organizer.
Please Please help!
Many thanks
D.M.You don't import one library to another. Just copy the library from the iBook to the Pictures folder on shout new MacBook Pro. If you have another library already on the MBP rename it so you don't overwrite it with the old library.
Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the newly copied library and let iPhoto convert it to the new version.
Do you have photos in the library on the new MacBook Pro that you want to combine with the older library? -
I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later. But I have version 8.1.2. I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.
Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not
If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow. However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2: editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library. -
Star Rating bar does not appear with images imported from file
Using Elements 11, cannot get the Star Rating bar to appear under images imported from file, although the intro to the program shows this as happening automatically.
Hope this goes through, as I have also created an account, but the question does not seem to be get a post.

What should I do if the iphoto keeps on saying that "Plz wait for import to complete" when i click the close button but it is not importing photos? How can I close the iPhoto? I try to switch my mac off but it doesn't work. Thanks.
You should be able to select Force Quit from the menu beneath the Apple icon in Finder
and choose to Quit iPhoto from there, without messing up the Mac OS X in the process.
OS X - Support
Not sure if rebuilding the iPhoto library would help this issue. However if you had to
turn off the computer without the correct method (unplug, etc; instead of menu choice)
the system may have accrued damages and should be checked, maybe repaired by
use of the Disk Utility in the system. Or restart the computer in Safe Boot mode, then
run 'repair disk permissions' while it is running in that reduced mode; then restart after.

•OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Suggestions on how to use Safe Mode in article, to resolve issues, may be helpful.
There likely are other means to rectify troublesome applications, including reinstall.
Be sure to backup your music, image, video, and other work on an external drive
or suitable device as a precaution against loss should there be a hard drive failure.

iPhoto keeps crashing! - then needs to repair the library. This is happening each time I import photos or even try to go in to an even and delete photos etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please it is so frustrating - I used to love iPhoto - now I regret upgrading to Lion
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
How to import photos from a folder that contains hundreds of folders to Photos keeping the same folder structure?
You'll have to do that manually, i.e. export each album of photos to a folder with the same name located on your hard drive via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.

most times when I import photos from my desktop or dropbox to iPhoto, iPhoto will keep the title I created for the image as the display title under the image. but occasionally it displays the filename instead and I have to go back through and reenter the title in iPhoto. why the inconsistency? running OS 10.9.5 and using iPhoto 9.5.1
Try this: select one of the photos that are showing the wrong title and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to File Name menu option.
See if that will put the name that you want under the thumbnail.
