Kernal Panic Issue 2013 rMBP
So I was casually using my 2013 rMBP today and all of the sudden everything froze and it forced me to shut down. It is only a few months old so this definitely concerns me since I have never had an issue with any of my Apple products before. Does anyone know if this panic report is just a one time fluke or should I take several hours out of my life and go sit at a genius bar? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I always like to see the simple hardware profile / system profile (always leave out serial number though)
Is Netflix or Silverlight using Java? did you see the other user earlier today with Q about those also?
System is nearly 7 yrs old, FBDIMMs go bad, the original graphic cards are due for upgrade if you have not.
Still have your OEM DVDs? Apple Hardware Test is on one.
Also, consider installing 10.6 on another fresh format drive and do all the updates and 'watch' before making more changes. You cna use Setup or Migration Assistant. Lion runs well on these systems too.
2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $32

Hardware Monitor

This can make a huge difference in your system performance, best $100 investment I made in mine.
SSD: Samsung 840 128GB

And one of thse:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/726537-REG/Apple_MC742ZM_A_ATI_Radeon_HD_5 770.html
I'd start with a pair or two of the FBDIMMs, probably over due and these are top quality, $32 (I gradually replaced all mine to have 16GB now).

Fixing kernal panic issue necessary before updating OS?
I've been using 10.4.11 for nearly two years and it usually crashes once or twice a day. I've posted my problem on this forum twice and none of the many suggestions solved the problem. I've replaced my hard drive and had the memory checked and reseated. Keeping any peripheral equip unplugged seems to help, but not always. The kernal panics are totally unpredictable. It can happen when any software is running or none. It can crash on Shut Down or Start Up. It's never consistent.
I'm getting a little tired of it, to say the least, and have purchased Leopard with the intention of installing it (Erase and Install option), naively assuming that may solve my problem. But I've recently read that kernal panic issues should be solved BEFORE upgrading system software. Is that true? If so, I may just upgrade to an Intel-based Mac and junk this G-5.At the very least, you need to be able to run 10.4.11 without having kernel panics. That may mean you have to do an Erase & Install of 10.4 and run without having any other applications installed and see if the machine is still crashing.
Installing 10.5 on a system that already has issues is not a good idea at all.
I took a look at your thread here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8863122
Possible culprits for your issues:
Graphics card
Modem
I see this bit in a couple of your logs:
com.apple.driver.MotorolaSM56K(1.3.1)@0x9bd000
dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleI2SModemFamily(1.1.2)@0x9b2000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOSerialFamily(6.0.1d20)@0x3da000
Do you have any software by Motorola installed? (This could be a piece of hardware too; I'm not well-versed in how desktop Macs are put together!)
This bit also appears:
com.apple.GeForce(3.4.2)@0xbe4000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.4)@0x398000
And that could indicate problems with your graphics card.

Kernal Panic Issue (Need Help Decoding)
This morning after booting up my Mac Pro, I received a Kernal Panic message on the screen and had to reboot in safe mode.
I disabled any startup 3rd party applications and also disbaled any login startup applications.
After doing this I was able to start up successfully, but after about 10 minutes of running, my screen would fade to black from the top down and then the machine would restart itself.
I did this a couple of times and thought I would post here to see if anyone could help decode my kernal panic info.

<Edited By Host>I always like to see the simple hardware profile / system profile (always leave out serial number though)
2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $32
http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
Hardware Monitor
http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
This can make a huge difference in your system performance, best $100 investment I made in mine.
SSD: Samsung 840 128GB
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-120GB-internal-MZ-7TD120BW/dp/B009NHAF06/
And one of thse:
ATI Radeon 5770 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC742ZM/A
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-ATI-Radeon-5770-MC742ZM/dp/B003Z6QH6M
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/726537-REG/Apple_MC742ZM_A_ATI_Radeon_HD_5 770.html
I'd start with a pair or two of the FBDIMMs, probably over due and these are top quality, $32 (I gradually replaced all mine to have 16GB now).

Also having Kernal Panic issues
I am also having issues with a Kernal Panic. My new refurbished MBP was working fine for a couple of days and now all of a sudden I got a couple yesterday and have gotten 3 today. I called tech support this morning and we checked for errors and reset the permissions. If you could help me with the logs as well that would maybe give an Idea of where to start..thanks. Below is the logs. Also the only thing I have put on the machine is Skype and I also transferred pictures and Itunes library from my pc based laptop to this machine using a usb flash drive. I dont know if that would have anything to do with it.

I never noticed the problem for over a year but upon having the machine returned after some repairs I seem to get it all the time. I'm averaging once a day but often multiple times in a day. Mine seems to be tied to Safari and high internet use (just surmising).

I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6 from Apple's Install DVD on a brand new HD (I did this from another Mac via USB)
I then installed that HD into my wife's iMac (2007, model identifier 7.1). I also upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4GB. All seemed to go very smoothly. It booted up perfectly. Just like a new Mac (welcome animation).
I used Software Update and updated system software to 10.6.5, using the Combo update. Rebooted perfectly. I started changing preferences, adding printers, etc. All was fine.
Then I started getting a VOLLEY of error messages, many of them in a row, necessitating many OK enters. This happened after changing sharing privileges:
"Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"
Again, this type of message appeared many times about a large number of extensions. It seemed to go away.
Then with the computer shut down, I plugged in a Firewire 800 external hard drive (powered down) to prepare to bring in her data. I rebooted and then I got the following grey screen Kernal Panic message:
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I keep getting this message, even with the external HD not connected. I put the old RAM back in, assuming the new RAM might be bad. Same problem.
It will not let me start up from Apple System DVD! It kicks out the DVD and shows the grey screen Kernal Panic messagemessage.
I cannot start up using SHIFT key or COMMAND-S key or the COMMAND-V key to use the "fsck -fy" command. Nor can I do a hardware test by holding down the D key at startup. Nor does a PRAM reset help.
Any help with this? The initial error you described sounds like the result of a badly performed update:
Frank Cioffi1 wrote:> "Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"
This is the message you get when the owner/permissions of a kext are not correct (usually when someone manually installs a kext without repairing permissions).
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I haven't seen this before but it sounds like it is related... the problem is to do with accessing things, (permissions)
What exactly did you change when you say "changing sharing privileges"?
Also when booting from the install DVD make sure it's actually trying to boot from the DVD by ether holding down "c" as soon as you press the power button... or holding down "option" aka "alt" and then selecting the DVD from the boot menu. -
Yet another kernal panic issue
I'm having kernal panics too....
My iMac starts up with no startup chime, and then it starts up OK, but then when it gets to the part when the login window comes up, its just a blue screen, and every 3-5 seconds the little "startup spinny thingy" comes up for about 1/5 of a second. I call it the blue-screen of death. I'm pretty sure its the memory, and I'm preforming all the tasks apple says to do on the support page. I've heard of people saying that buying a new keyboard or slapping the mac would work, but it doesn't for me. Usually I just reboot in safe-mode and all goes away, but now I can't boot up in safe mode OR hear a startup chime. Please read this in conjunction with my responce to your other post.
Have you tried disconnecting all external devices (standfast the Apple mouse and keyboard) and seeing how that goes? You may also wish to try removing the SODIMM RAM and Airport card if present). Some questions for you:
Have you added any hardware/software recently?
What does the Apple Hardware Test disk report? (Here's a more extensive RAM checker.)
Do you have another Mac/External Firewire Hard Disk (they can help troubleshoot).
cheers

ive been getting the must restart screen usually coming out of sleep and after restarting sometimes ill have to do it 3-4 times ive done my homework , still happens after unpluging all pereferals ,ive reset PRAM ive reset pow mang unit, ran disk utillities not only archive but did full erase and install and after e&i was not having prob. slowly added pereferals over a few days like lexmark z23, seagate hard drive (for backup only) a microsoft intellimouse expl 2 wireless mouse thinking that when must restart problem occurs, at the report to apple sceen afterward the dates within it would help find specific issue but none of the dates within. ive done all applesite has suggested. my printer and mouse software says its for macosx can anyone give me some feedback or sugestions
what can it be and can anyone make sense of the error report after problem restart if i were to post it? thanks a millionHI, ken.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. While you may have done some of the things cited in the FAQ, the order in which they are done can be critically important, hence the roadmap.
If you post the panic log, I will endeavor to see what it can tell us. Instructions on posting the panic log are also found in my FAQ.
Good luck!

Kernal panic issues and airport
I was uploading a cd into itunes and I had a kernel panic. I tried restarting my computer a few times and out of frustration reset my PMU. Then my trackpad was not working. Finally, I was able to restart my computer in safe mode, but my airport card was just gone. So two questions.
1. I've never used safe mode before, does airport not work in it? Or is my airport card just not working anymore?
2. I checked the log about the kernel panic and it said "watchdog detected dead controller". What does this mean? Here is the whole log

Have had a kernal panic issue with this machine since it was purchased. Apple has replaced the motherboard, HD, graphics card and display, run every hardware test imaginable, but the panics persist. Panics are now they are down to once or twice a week. The screen randomly either freezes or goes dark and requires powering off and restarting. A real pain to my productivity! Running OSX 10.8.2 with no periferals connected. Here is the latest panic report from this morning.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Uninstall or disable LogMeIn. Might also see if there's an update.
For this possible culprit kernel extension, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
(Note: disabling a kext this way may not always work as it may refuse to cooperate, but this is usually effective. The worst that will happen is you'll get a message saying it won't work.)
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html -
I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
Thanksthanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds. -
After upgrade os to 10.6.8 I experience kernel panic issue every time I start my mac
Hello,
I've upgraded my mac to 10.6.8 and have done all software update but everytime I start my machine I've a kernal panic issue that prevent me to do anything else then restart the machine in safe mode.
I've done the check on disk and there is no error.

Please not the issue is not occurring when I run in safe modeUnless you are using an illegal hackintosh, there should not be a VooDooHDA.kext in your /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. That is what is causing the panic.
If you are using a hackintosh rather than a real Mac, then we cannot help you further. -
Possible to Retrieve AddressBook after Kernal Panic
My husband's G4 PowerBook has been experiencing occasional kernal panics (will leave that to another discussion area). Two days ago he discovered all of his AddressBook entries are missing when he synced his iPhone. He doesn't remember the last time he opened AddressBook from his laptop itself.
Couple of questions - is there a way to restore his AddressBook contents? Tried to restore from a backup, but only gained 6 entries (out of 100 or so).
I would like to restore the AddressBook before I tackle the kernal panic issue. Although he's just itching for me to crash his old 15" Powerbook so he has an excuse to go to the Apple Store for a shiny new 27" iMac.Tried that, didn't help much, a few more contacts appeared. Problem is, have no idea when they actually disappeared.
I do believe they're gone now.
It may be possible to recover some erased ones, but you must quit using the Computer immediately, because the OS will think it can write to those freed blocks on the disk.
Either boot this one in Target mode...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
And recovering from another Mac, or booting this Mac from another HDD, then using Data Rescue II...
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
If not going that route then...
I'd do AJ first, then DW. -
Mid2010 imac running Mavericks, reoccuring kernal panic
Can someone help me look into the problem? It's been troubling me for a while. Thanks a lot!
The kernal panic issue had been with my imac since before I updated to Mavericks. Things I tried:
1. Safe mode. Seems okay. Didn't manage to replicate kernal panic.
2. repaire disk permission and disk in recovery mode
3. reset NVRAM
4. Reseated RAM and also tried new RAM later
Mostly I used the imac to watch video. So almost all kernal panic happened during my watching video. Sometimes kernal panic happened again and again if I restarted imac right after a panic.
The diagnosis reports I got is like this:

Thunderbolt Bus:Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
In updating OS to 10.4.7 last year, I had an issue with the computer seemingly running very quickly, as though it was doing sixty in first gear. I learned it was a "kernal panic" issue (if you don't know what those are, good!) and that upgrading the firmware would fix it; I tried that and fried the drive.
Bought new drive, didn't use the old one, didn't look back. Now the same symptom has started up again, but I don't find any more references on Apple's site for 'upgrading firmware'......anyone know anything about that for powermac machines?
I'd be most gratefulHi, tbfa.
If your question is "How do I troubleshoot a kernel panic?" then this may help.
If you are seeing the following message
that indicates a kernel panic.
If so, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Good luck!

Mac Mini Kernal Panics and AHT error - long description
I have a late 2009 Mini that has had kernal panic issues for some time. When I first bought the computer it had 1/120 and I upgraded it to 2/320 myself. It is hooked up to my HDTV as a media server and it started getting kernel panics running Netflix in Safari. Sometimes the fan would spin up to very high levels while running Virtual Box with Windows XP.
It seemed to be the added RAM and I pulled it. Panics went away but now it is very slow. I purchased 2 - 2GB RAM from OWC and installed in machine. It was good for a while but then started kernel panics again.
Recently my MS bluetooth keyboard started having issues connecting and the panics got worse. I ran AHT on the machine and got the following error code:
4MOT/2/40000004: Master - 0 I reran the test and got 4MOT/2/40000004: Master - some 4 digit number I didn't write down because someone unplugged the machine while I was getting a pen.
It appears to be heat related because after a kernel panic if I leave the machine turned off for half an hour or so it works again for a while but if I just restart it will panic again within the next 15 minutes.Zed Ruhlen wrote:
Thank you for the answer. I suspected a fan issue considering the symptoms. I know others have had fan issues with other MOT codes but wasn't sure.
It is odd that it says MOT instead of, oh, say, FAN.
I think my first step will be to run the fan utility and see what the fan and temps are doing before I go to a Genius bar.
Go ahead and make the appointment; if the AHT says it's bad, it needs attention.
