Kernal Panics Are Rendering My Mac Unusable....Help

I have a Macbook 2GHz Intel Core Duo and am running 10.5.6. (original Macbook). At about the 10.5.3 upgrade, I started to get lots of kernel panics. I subsequently performed an Archive and Install and that fixed things for about 6 months. After upgrading to 10.5.5, I started to get a dramatic increase in kernel panics. They particularly occur upon booting up, waking up the computer from sleep, and even when shutting down. All of these crashes have taken a toll on many of my files, and I have had to use Disk Warrior to restore the directory several times.
I teach for a living and I give lectures with this computer. Unfortunately, given the state that this computer/OS is in, I really cannot confidently present/teach with this computer for the crashes are too frequent and too unpredictable. I have the latest firmware and have even tried to drag the preferences to the desktop to no avail. I have searched the discussions but it seems as these problems are vary from case to case.
Below is the report from the last crash. Please let me know if any other info is needed. I would appreciate any help as I really cannot afford to buy a new machine at this time.
Thanks very much.

Your problem may be hardware related - bad or marginal RAM - or you may have a problem with the hard drive requiring that you reformat the drive and reinstall OS X from scratch rather than doing an Archive and Install. Of course you will need a bootable backup, ideally, or at least a backup of your personal documents and files.
You should also do a hardware test by booting from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics repeatedly over at least one or two hours. This will likely reveal a detectable hardware problem and maybe even a bad RAM problem. Report any error messages you receive here.

  • Vertical Lines!! Kernal Panics !!!! Please Help

Hi this is my first post to the forums. I thank you all in advance for answers. I have an IMAC 24'' 3.06 GHZ 4GB RAM that is displaying some weird characteristics. The first is the lines from left to right that are vertical. The first set is 4 lines then sets of 3. This is happening all across the screen. I have a W8 serial and saw something about defected computers is this true? I have the Applecare extended for 430+ more days and I already had a crash on the HD. Now I am having more problems. The lines worried me the most, but also I am receiving Kernal Panics. I can't even get the computer to load up. I spoke with Applecare over the phone and they referred me to the store. I got sent away twice before they finally got my computer in the store. I have now been to the store three times this week alone. Most importantly is the vertical line issue a permanent issue? I purchased the unit in July of 2008. I hope my unit is not defective. Now they are telling me they are going to replace the Logic Board as well as HD. They said this time it wasn't an HD issue but they are going to replace the HD to placate me since I have been there three times this week. The new HD is 640GB. Original is 500. If the HD is not bad are they truly accomodating me or is it deceptive practices to hide their constant issues with the CPU. I just want to find out why they are causing me to do all of this running around. I have spent over 5 hours on Phone with Applecare. I worry if this computer is going to be a recurring problem. Are the vertical lines symptoms of other issues down the road. My confidence is slowly eroding. I will give the full serial If that helps. Thanks!
    Sincerely,
    Adam('s Apple)

How do I get to Customer Relations?
Just call 1-800-275-2273 and asked to be transferred to ACR. CALMLY explain the situation to them and have all your case numbers ready. If you don't get satisfaction with the first call, call back and talk to another rep. I went through 3 of them one time, but Apple came through in the end to my satisfaction. They will do what it takes to make you happy.

  • TS1544 I never accepted to set up a keychain password when I was setting up my Mac. Now I'm being prompted for a password! It's rendered my Mac unusable.

I didn't accept to creat a keychain password when I was setting up my Mac, a couple of months ago. Now it's prompting me for one, & has as a consequence rendered it unusable?!

Bought new at WalMart.  With initial set up it asked use existing or create new apple id.  I chose create new.  I don't remember if it asked there for the email address but not a password.  It did ask for a birthday (they are both younger than 13).  So the home screen came up.  Went to settings>icloud>apple id and password.  I chose get a free apple id where it said they were too young so I used my husbands and my birth years for each girl.  So I still havent set a password entering the apple id's then chose forgot password entered the email and chose reset by email.  I tried by security questions but it couldnt verify the birthdays.  If it matters, their emails are attatched to an iPhone and an iPod but with my apple id.

  • Kernal Panic Report: Magic Mouse?    Help, please

hello, i am in need of some help understanding what is causing my mac to shut down. i thought i read somewhere that the first line in the kotex is what probably cause the kernal panic. here is the report. i was thinking is it this:
    com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch 75.15
any help would be great. i have already performed a clean install to fix some other issues i was having with apps cause the system to crash and the finder freezing. what is weird, also, is avast and intego virus protectors have caused the system to crash. i deleted them and it got better. last night i tried to deleted all of the intego app/files using cleanbymac app uninstaller because the download did not come with an uninstaller. i dont think the uninstall was complete because i kept getting notification that netbarrierd and virusbarriern or d were still running. i could not even force quit them. i when in the apps packages and put it in the trash and uninstalled as much as i could. the crash report no longer says virusbarrier in the beginning. anyone have any ideas with this crash report. do i need a new driver for the magic mouse? i could not find an updage for it on apples site last night. last, i also read from apple that kernal panics are software related. i have already ran a thorough test on my hardware and it passed with flying colors. it was not the quick test either. it took an hour.
    super thanks,
    brian

Hi, see if Safe Boot works...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade

Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

    Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should.

  • Fixing kernal panic issue necessary before updating OS?

I've been using 10.4.11 for nearly two years and it usually crashes once or twice a day. I've posted my problem on this forum twice and none of the many suggestions solved the problem. I've replaced my hard drive and had the memory checked and reseated. Keeping any peripheral equip unplugged seems to help, but not always. The kernal panics are totally unpredictable. It can happen when any software is running or none. It can crash on Shut Down or Start Up. It's never consistent.
I'm getting a little tired of it, to say the least, and have purchased Leopard with the intention of installing it (Erase and Install option), naively assuming that may solve my problem. But I've recently read that kernal panic issues should be solved BEFORE upgrading system software. Is that true? If so, I may just upgrade to an Intel-based Mac and junk this G-5.

At the very least, you need to be able to run 10.4.11 without having kernel panics. That may mean you have to do an Erase & Install of 10.4 and run without having any other applications installed and see if the machine is still crashing.
Installing 10.5 on a system that already has issues is not a good idea at all.
I took a look at your thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8863122
    Possible culprits for your issues:
    Graphics card
    Modem
I see this bit in a couple of your logs:
    com.apple.driver.MotorolaSM56K(1.3.1)@0x9bd000
    dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleI2SModemFamily(1.1.2)@0x9b2000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOSerialFamily(6.0.1d20)@0x3da000
Do you have any software by Motorola installed? (This could be a piece of hardware too; I'm not well-versed in how desktop Macs are put together!)
    This bit also appears:
    com.apple.GeForce(3.4.2)@0xbe4000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.4)@0x398000
And that could indicate problems with your graphics card.

  • Kernel Panics DVCPROHD renders

    Hi
I have an interesting situation. Throughout this year, I have been experiencing Kernel Panics when rendering DVCPRO HD timelines. Our TV shows run for about 25 minutes and I would get upto 5 Kernel Panics each show when I left it to render over night after doing a grade on it. We are just using the FCP color correcting tools along with Joe's Filters.
Now, I had been selecting the whole timeline (Apple + A) and then Rendering. Occasionally, I would let auto render kick in to see if that stop the KPs from happening. Unfortunately, in both situations, KPs occurred.
Recently, I have changed the way I render the timeline. I mark an In and Out point for half the show and enter Option R. This does that portion of the timeline and enables an auto-save to occur (After 5 minutes). A minute later, an auto-render occurs which does the remainder of the timeline. I went for this approach as it meant that if it did crash, there was a chance that maybe I could recover half the show. Previously, everytime there was a KP, I would have to start again.
Now under this procedure, there are no KPs. ***?
I should also point out that our SD shows have never had this KP problem.
Here are some details of my MacPro
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 7 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
We are running an XSAN where the media is stored and connect via Fibre-optic cable.
Any thoughts on this rather odd situation. Is it just a coincidence or is something else.
    Thanks
    John

This can be caused by MANY factors. Version of the OS...version of QT, version of FCP. Capture Card? Version of the drivers for that card? XSAN drivers...third party plugins. RAM manufacturer. So many factors. And diagnosing what is the cause can take a while. But typically Kernal Panics are related to hardware issues...so my first suspect would be the RAM. But don't take my word for it. I am not a technician...just an editor with a little know how.
First thing I'd do is run the Disk Utility and repair permissions, then ZAP the PRAM, or better yet, reset the PMU...press the button inside the computer for 20 seconds (different location depending on the machine, and I don't know where it is on the MacPro).

  • Kernal Panic with OS 10.4.6 install

Repeated attempts to install OS 10.4.6 over 10.2.8 each time resulted in kernal panic. Despite restarting from outboard Firewire HD and using Disk Repair to correct permissions and repair the Macintosh HD, no joy followed. TechTool Deluxe 3.0.3 reported no HD problems. Taking the CPU to the MAC Store resulted in a successful install by the technician who repaired permissions and severe directory damage. Happily, I reconnected all previous cables at home, started up the MAC, and immediately noted the return of kernal panic or, finally, the MAC Blue Screen of Death. Disconnecting the SCSI cable (connected to Adaptec SCSI Card 2906) from an Iomega Zip Drive resolved the problem. I should have known that the SCSI device could be the cause of this problem, but I missed seeing the other reports in the Installation & Setup section when searching the terms “kernal panic.”
Entering “SCSI” as a search term does produce numerous messages regarding incompatibility problems, such as this long chain, “No luck getting Adaptec 2906 SCSI card to work.”
    PowerMac 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   RAM: 256MH then >> 768 MH now

    J.Michael:
Kernel panics are usually hardware based. If you have recently installed RAM or a peripheral your problem may be related to that piece of hardware.
Check out Dr. Smoke's Resolving Kernel Panics and see if there are any clues for you in it.
    Good luck.

  • Retina Kernal Panic?

    Hey guys,
My Retina 15" has been freaking out recently, the screen stays black and the unit is unresponsive. Along with that, waking from sleep and when connecting and disconnecting from my thunderbolt display the screen freaks out and takes a while to come back. I've been able to copy the kernal panic here, maybe you guys can help me out?
Also, I've run the extended Apple Hardware Test and everything passed...
    Thanks guys.

    Hey guys,
My Retina 15" has been freaking out recently, the screen stays black and the unit is unresponsive. Along with that, waking from sleep and when connecting and disconnecting from my thunderbolt display the screen freaks out and takes a while to come back. I've been able to copy the kernal panic here, maybe you guys can help me out?
Also, I've run the extended Apple Hardware Test and everything passed...

Disconnect other hardware, perform a SMC and PRAM reset
Reboot the machine with the Shift Key held down, check for updated to Temperture Monitor and Log Me in or uninstall using the developers uninstaller or methods.
    Reboot normally and test.

  • Replacement AHT version 2.0.1 or how to read a kernal panic

Does anyone know where a replacement or used apple hardware test disk version 2.0.1 for a Powermac G4 (FW800) can be purchased? I need to figure out why it is having kernal panics. If anyone also could help or point me in the right direction on information to read and understand kernal panics I would be extremely greatful.
    Power Mac G4(FW 800)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

HI, Michael. Welcome to the Discussions.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • Odd Kernal Panics

    Hey all,
Never thought it would come to this day when I would report a problem with my lovely mac
All has been fine and dandy with my iMac G5 until yesterday. I left my computer on while I left the room. When I came back the fans were blowing hard and the screen was black and frozen. I restarted by holding the power button in and it loaded up and then produced the grey screen with the "Please restart your computer" Kernal Panic.
Applecare took me through some steps such as disconnecting USB devices and trying a couple different boots with different keys. It was getting to the login screen fine but the mouse and keyboard weren't working so I couldn't login! There was power to the mouse (because it was lit) but the keyboard had no life. Anyway so Applecare said they would send a Engineer to pick my mac up and repair it. However, later on I tried taking the power cable out and then putting it back in again and booting. I got to the login screen and the mouse and keyboard worked, without a kernal panic too.
The mac continued to operate the rest of the day fine with no crash/kernal panic. However this morning It Kernal panicked again. Luckily I have backed up my internal hard drive now. I ran Techtool's and it passed everything. I also did a disk permission check - it was fine. Kernal panicked again, so I tried a extended apple hardware test. It passed all tests. Yet when i restarted and logged in after the hardware test, it crashed again.
Any ideas anyone? I know this is weird, but when it kernal panics, the bluetooth logo in the top right of the screen near the clock it has a line through it that I don't recognise. It is different to the bluetooth transfer connection logo. Could it be the bluetooth module that is making the mac crash? I very much doubt it but thought I would mention it. Thanks all.

I had just recently bought a new Lacie External so I just copied the whole internal hard drive contents onto the new drive. Thankfully! Thats useful to know that the line through the bluetooth logo means a bad connection or whatever.
I did a Apple Hardware test though like I stated, and it said the Logicboard was fine and it passed the test. Shall I try a couple more hardware tests? I read that sometimes it picks up stuff in tests after your initial one. I've got a suspicion that its software related, unless it is the logicboard. Is there any tests I can to check it any software is making the mac crash?
I cancelled the engineer because the mac had begun to work (I managed to login as the keyboard/mouse worked). I can easily call the enginer again to come and collect my mac, but I am just in the stages for my final revision for my exams on monday and tuesday next week! So I rather the mac got collected after them! I am at university in Wales at the moment though and the company that Applecare hooked me up with said they only do onsite repairs if you live around London. So it would only be someone to collect the mac for taking it in for repair.
PS. It's a Rev C as far as I know. The one before the Intel chips.

  • Continuing Kernal Panic, Mac Store Clueless

I brought my 1.25 Dual G4 (MMD) to the local Mac Store because it had started having repeating Kernal Panics. The machine would run for 1-2 hours and then Kernal Panic. At times, the machine would even Kernal Panic at start up. I even tried starting off the 10.3.9 disk and it Kernal Panic'ed. In short order, I had no access to my machine, or even any way to save my info off my drives.
I am the guy that other people bring thier Mac to when it's broken. I have every program/tool needed to work on a mac. So if I couldn't find the issue, I surmized no one else could, and I may have been right.
I brought my G4 to the Mac Store. They were able to repeat the Kernal Panic, and were unable to get my machine up, even trying to fire it up off of an external HD. The Mac store changed my CPU ( $600.00+ due to my applecare expiring). That didn't do it. I took it home and it did start up, so I backed up onto a Firewire drive - BUT, one hour after backing up - KERNAL PANIC!
Mac Store Trip #2, they replaced my mother board (Logic board for mac users) and my processor again (free). 1 hour later KERNAL PANIC!!
Mac Store Trip #3 - they claim the figured out that a 3rd party HD I installed was causing the Kernal Panic. I took out the hardrive, bought a brand new one, reinstalled everything, 1 hour after I finished installing 10.4.7 BOOM KERNAL PANIC!
The apple store was clueless the whole time, and did about $2000.00 worth of repairs and labor for about 6 days costing me $600.00 and gas money. I really don't care, as long as my box works.
I have found that my fan doesn't seem to "speed up" anymore as it once did, and the inside of the box seems unusally hot. I just intalled 2 extra fans, and 2 hours later KERNAL PANIC.
I know the issue is not the HD. I know the issue isn't the video/3D card (I have 2 cards, and swaping them, both occur).
I have a 2096 SCSI card from adaptec with the driver installed that I have used for 3 years...dunno if it can be that.
I have a Aurora Fuse Igniter video card, with currently no driver installed. I'm gonna take that out, but that has been in the machine for 3 years as well, with no issues.
I can guess that MAYBE one of my ram chips has gone bad. I will try taking out all but the original ram and running the machine.
Any other ideas? Anytime the processor has to work hard for about an hour, the machine Kernal Panics. I have to admit, at least now it starts up - whereas before it wasn't even doing that - so the Mac Store did do something. Now the symtoms have just changed.
I am considering installing a 3rd fan that is attached to the HD case and pointed on a slight angle into the giant heat sink of the processor. The heat sink is right next to the HD, and seems to get unusally hot.
    I have Geforc4MX card currently installed, and I own a 9800Radion Pro.
This box was my workhorse. I have owned about 9 macs, and I have never had real issues like this. Ususally my HD's would just die. I cannot figure out what the heck is wrong with it, despite 10 years of fixing my macs, friends macs, and family's macs.
The Kernal panic messages weren't even being saved, thats how bad the panic was. The few times I saw it, it said "CPU 01" but since the CPU has been changed twice now, I assume its not that.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

This may or may not help. I have experienced kernel panics periodically, daily, since I bought my 1.42 dual. I usually know how to fix things, but i am not certified. I understand heat, so I run a large fan- a real ordinary box fan- right next to my computer blowing past it. This does not strain the internal power supply further. i have the box maxed, two optical drives, 128 radeon 9800 card, 4 drives, no pci fans internally, unless you count the onboard video card fan. I don't leave my firewire drives attached- just on and off for transfers- and I was determined this week to get the problem (of 2 years plus, now), solved. I have been kernel panic free for slightly over a day, so I don't know if this is appropriate yet, but it seems that my original 1 GB of ram from the apple build was the problem. I did notice that those sticks were much hotter than my additional ramjet sticks this last week when I went to unseat and reseat them, so I just took them out as a test. I think formerly I just removed my additional ram as a test. I am looking around at the sticks to try and figure out if one duo was ecc and one was not.... but as I understand it, all that would do would be to remove the ecc function on the duo that was ecc... I do not remember buying non-ecc ram. If my machine continues to be stable, I intend to just buy a little more ram identical to the sticks that are working now. I've lost work and had continual challenges because of this problem, and it does not seem to be because of the ram I added, at all, but the ram from apple that I started off with. I have had this problem since the day i turned on the machine, I have read about so many other people suffering with it, and heat and firewire disks and power supply were the culprits always suggested to me. Does anyone have a site to suggest that helps one identify ram sticks with an image? Has anyone ever seen information from Apple that admits to this problem in these machines? They weren't continued that long with the move to the G5.
