Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc
Can anyone help me ?,
Here's what happens :
1. I press the power button to switch on
2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!

Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

I've been having a memory leak/hanging problem for weeks -- FF slowly increases memory usage until it's at almost 100% and then freezes and I have to shut it down via Task Manager/end process.
Last week I updated to FF 12, and I also added the Web Developer 1.1.9 add-on. Now every time I open Firefox it tries to go to the "Web Developer installed" page, but the page never loads. Nothing else will load either.
I can't start in Safe Mode because of the problem with having to close it in Task Manager. I select "restart with add-ons disabled" and it just never opens. The Add-On manager page won't load, so I can't disable Web Developer to see if that's the problem.
I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled, and it still goes right back to the Web Developer page when I open the freshly installed copy.
Help, please!Have you already tried clearing the browser cache, opening a blank tab, and trying to open some other website ?

Instead of trying to open safe mode from within the User Interface menu have you tried alternative methods such as holding the shift key when you start Firefox. (After checking for running Firefox processes or plugincontainer and killing them if found )

Kernel panic, can't start with install disc or safe mode
Two days ago my 2008 Mac Pro got a green screen that froze up the entire system. After a few minutes I decided to force power down by holding the power button. Since then I receive a kernel panic every time I boot up in Mac OS.
I run bootcamp and I'm able to boot up Vista 32 bit okay. After the system went down my video card, NVidia 8800GT, was no longer being loaded in Windows due to and error (43). I tried installing old drivers, new drivers, and today I finally bought a new video card, NVidia GTX 285 Mac. The new card works great in Windows, but I'm still unable to load up Mac OS.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've also tried booting up off of the 10.5 install disc to try a fresh install, but I get kernel panics even when I do that. I connected the Mac to another Mac using target disc mode and using Verify Disk it detected no errors. I used the Apple Hardware Test and again the Mac detected no problems. I've reseated the RAM in the cpu and disconnected all usb and firewire devices. I've called Apple support and they told me to do all of these things I just mentioned. After all of that I even tried erasing the Mac HD partion of the hard drive thinking that it might erase a problematic file or at least let me do an install on a fresh drive (thankfully I made an exteral backup of all my Mac files when I had it in target disk mode). I'm at a loss of what else to try other than taking it into a mechanic. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?Your OS X system sounds hosed. However, getting a kernel panic trying to start from an installer disc is usually a good sign of hardware failure. If you aren't using the original installer disc that came with the computer, then that could be a problem - wrong version for the machine. Or the installer disc itself is defective.
If your Boot Camp partition is on a different drive, then I'd suspect the hard drive but you believe it's OK. This could be a problem with RAM. However, I would look for another suitable installer disc you can try that boots the same version of OS X that was installed originally on your machine. -
My MacBook won't start normally and when I try to start in safe mode it gets stuck on a blue screen that alternates between the load wheel and my mouse at the top left corner. Any help?
Sounds like serious system file corruption. Start with:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Assuming this won't fix the problem the next step is to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.

Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. 2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
My Firefox does not open, at all. When I try to open i get the message that says "Firefox is unable to start correctly (0xc0000056)". I have tried to run the Firefox crash report, which also does not run. I'm unable to start in safe mode, also. All I get, is the above message...nothing else.
I'm not using that extension, so I do not know which files are used in addition to sessionstore.js and you need to check the profile folder yourself for suspect files.
This can be a problem with the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]<br />
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js .

Can not boot in safe mode or from install disk
Having major issues. MBP getting stuck at a blue screen after the gray apple screen. Tried pressing and holding shift key while starting for safe mode and still goes to blue screen. Tried holding c key and starting with sl install disk in drive and still goes to blue screen. Issue started with continous cycle back to login screen from my main user account and due to my stupidity of turning on automatic login from a admin test account (thinking I could trick it), I am now in this vicious cycle.
And no I don't have a bootable clone. I just updated to SL and like an lazy idiot didn't go ahead and make my bootable clone.
FYI I do have a timecapsule with a week old or so backup.
Any suggestions?having a time capsule with TM backups is certainly good. you can always restore your system from it in a pinch.
do you have a firmware password set perhaps? it would preclude booting in safe mode or from the dvd using "c". reboot and hold option at the chime. this should boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose to boot from the DVD.
if you do have a firmware password set it will ask you to enter the firmware password before letting you use the startup disk manager. -

I have this virus that will not allow me to open my anti-virus software, Malwarebytes, Windows update, windows security, msconfig or any other tool that might help me out.
It tires to force scanning of some program called "Security System" (looks as if it wants to scan and clean my computer, but my feeling is that it's part of the virus)
I wanted to start my computer in safe mode, but I can't seem to do it.
I've tried spamming F2, F8, F10 each on different startups during the windows loading page but I get nothing!
Any idea how I can get into safe mode on this beast?

You might be able to use Rescue and Recovery to backup your files using the "Rescue Files" section located under the "Rescue and Restore" section. (If you don't see the Menu on the left when R&R first loads, click on the "Launch Advanced Rescue and Recovery" link on the bottom left of the page). Also in Rescue and Recovery, these are 3 options available under "Restore Your System". If that virus is not going away, I'd highly recommend selecting "Restore to the original factory state" and then selecting "I do not want to save any files".

Can neither use disk utility nor reinstall from original install disc
I cannot use the disk utility (pressing D / install disk) - it says that "the machine does not support it"
And I cannot delete and reinstall mac os x - if I boot from the install disk the screen stays light blue
I got my macbook with the 10.4.10 install dvds and the 10.5. update dvd.
About this mac says I have version 10.6. installed.
Why can´t i run the hardware test or delete and reinstall?

Can't start in Safe Mode or any mode - hangs on mup.sys driver
Can anyone help me. I have done a few searches on the internet and see that this is a familiar problem. I was using a usb storage key and someone removed it without doing so safely - my laptop then froze and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the on/off key.
Now I can't do anything - it just repeatedly goes to the same page saying that as there was a problem choose a way to start - I have chosen every single one and nothing - it loads up until this driver mup.sys and then just goes straight to the same page again. I have run out of ideas.
Can anyone help?
I am trying to avoid the recovery disc as I really don't want to lose my work yet but realise that may have to happen, mind you I have read reports that it still hangs even when you try that option.
Thank you RachelHi Rachel it sounds very much like a problem I had with my laptop a while ago. It boots up for 3 seconds, blue screens and back to the start. Unfortunately there's very little you can about it but backup your files and reinstall Windows using the product recovery DVD. To back up your files you need to get access to your files using a bootable CD/Floppy with NTFS support For this I recommend the following:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ - BartPE (needs an XP CD with SP1+). BartPE boots directly from your CD-ROM it provides a basic Windows environment with networking LAN support and external USB flash drive.
http://www.knoppix.net/ - Knoppix bootable Linux CD (sometimes found included with computer magazines) this runs directly from your CD-ROM and like BartPE it also provides networking and USB flash drive support. If you are new to linux you might find difficult to use at first. However the KDE desktop provides useful shortcuts labeled: hda1 (harddrive) sda1(flash drive when connected)

Mavericks can only boot in safe mode
In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.

Satellite A105-S4211 can be launched at safe mode only

I am a newer, and need help!
I have Toshiba Satellite A105-S4211 laptop. My kid used it for a year, and told me the Window XP operating system could not be normally launched up. I tested it. This laptop only can be started at safe mode. I used following method try to fix it. but it still works at safe mode only:
1. Replaced memory.
2. Replaced hard drive.
3. format hard drive, and reinstall Toshiba recovery disk--> could not install completed, fail at latest step.
4. format hard drive, and install Window XP professional SP2 --> fail at latest step also.
5. lauched at safe mode, and use command chkdsk to check disk. finsihed checked disk and ask me to use command "chkdsk /f" at next start up because some file is used. I reply "Yes", and restart laptop, it still going to safe mode.
6. One of my friend told me this maybe the video card of this laptop is out of work because it only works at low resolution. I have no idea.
7. I read some error messages at the process of launch. such as error at address 0x00000005. but I don't know how to fix it.
Some one told I should replace a new mother board. I bought this laptop at the fall of 2006, but my kid used only one year. it has not been used because this trouble. Is it the reasonable idea to buy new motherboard?

I tested this lapton again as following:
1. Boot from orininal recovery disc, erase and partition hard drive
2. continue to boot from recovery disc, select option of recovery of factory default software
3 finish the process to create CRC, and screen show the recovery completed
4. Screen shows " Apply final configuration (Don't interrupt)
5, Window Xp show to shut down, and restart laptop, the normal desktop screen is shown
6. pop up window indicates "load personal setting"
laptop repeatly step 4 to 6 two to three times, then I had couple different results:
a. laptop still power on, screen does not show any image, black, but it is different to the "black" without power.
b. a small window indicates: This system is not fully install, please run setup again"
If I manually shut down this laptop, and make cold power up:
a. stay at Window XP initial image, can not go to next
b. laptop show blue screen for one second (looks to make disk check), go to option to select safe mode or normal mode
c. go to Window guiding setup, I finished the Windows XP set up step by step, laptop freeze
The trouble begins at the step of "Apply final configuration".
Do I need to order the disc of Recovery and Application/Drivers, Satellite A100/A105 Series"?
Any suggestion? thanks!

HELP! My Mother in Law's IMAC - OS 10.3 won't start in safe mode!
She had a power outage last night, with the computer on. She just gets a screen with the apple and spinning gear. We can't start it in safe mode or with the install disc. She got something when we started up in single user mode, but she said there was no place to type in any commands - just lots of writing that does not make sense to us. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Firefox used to work fine, then a few days ago it just stopped. When I try to start it, it comes up with a message that "firefox has stopped working". That message comes up over the box that asks if I want to start in safe mode or reset firefox. when i try to close or cancel that message so I can try starting in safe mode, both sets of messages go away.
if I try to start in safe mode using the shift key, the same thing occurs. The same thing occurred after I uninstalled and reinstalled.Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

Do you have an external disk with a Time Machine backup on it?
If you do, try to boot to the Recovery Partition of the TM disk.
- During a boot press the Option key after the chime but before you see a grey screen and then select the TM disk
- If you boot to this Recovery Partition, you have options to run Disk Utility to try and Repair/Repair Permissions of the internal disk or you can select to restore from the TM Backup.
