Kernel panic, can't start with install disc or safe mode

Two days ago my 2008 Mac Pro got a green screen that froze up the entire system. After a few minutes I decided to force power down by holding the power button. Since then I receive a kernel panic every time I boot up in Mac OS.
I run bootcamp and I'm able to boot up Vista 32 bit okay. After the system went down my video card, NVidia 8800GT, was no longer being loaded in Windows due to and error (43). I tried installing old drivers, new drivers, and today I finally bought a new video card, NVidia GTX 285 Mac. The new card works great in Windows, but I'm still unable to load up Mac OS.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've also tried booting up off of the 10.5 install disc to try a fresh install, but I get kernel panics even when I do that. I connected the Mac to another Mac using target disc mode and using Verify Disk it detected no errors. I used the Apple Hardware Test and again the Mac detected no problems. I've reseated the RAM in the cpu and disconnected all usb and firewire devices. I've called Apple support and they told me to do all of these things I just mentioned. After all of that I even tried erasing the Mac HD partion of the hard drive thinking that it might erase a problematic file or at least let me do an install on a fresh drive (thankfully I made an exteral backup of all my Mac files when I had it in target disk mode). I'm at a loss of what else to try other than taking it into a mechanic. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?

Your OS X system sounds hosed. However, getting a kernel panic trying to start from an installer disc is usually a good sign of hardware failure. If you aren't using the original installer disc that came with the computer, then that could be a problem - wrong version for the machine. Or the installer disc itself is defective.
If your Boot Camp partition is on a different drive, then I'd suspect the hard drive but you believe it's OK. This could be a problem with RAM. However, I would look for another suitable installer disc you can try that boots the same version of OS X that was installed originally on your machine.

  • Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc

    Can anyone help me ?,
    Here's what happens :
    1. I press the power button to switch on
    2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
    3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
    Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!

    Hello going:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

  • Mac won't start with install disc 1-after kernal panic

so i thought i'd try to burn a dying Lacie disc to retrieve some files and when I did the kernel panic popped up. Now, I've had KPs before and usually resolved them with the two reinstal options using my original system discs. this time however when i manually put in the disc and held the c key down, the kp message came up and after a minute or two, the screen went to blue screen. Help! I've got to get this old machine up and going! now typing on a friends pc laptop.

Will it boot in Safe Mode? See
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)

Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.

  • How can I start from install disc without shutting down Mac?

Sorry. that last post wasn't so clear. I started the computer without a password, but I think when I was trying to set my own password I may
    have re-activated the old one.
I'm afraid that if I shut it down I won't be able to restart it?- (for starting over from install discs)
    What Have I Done?
This is a hard one. Can anyone help?

Put the disk inside the slot.
    Hit the restart button.
Hold down the c key as your computer is booting.

That is the wrong system disc, the Mid 2007 Mac Mini's originally came with Tiger 10.4. You must have been sent the wrong disc, because that gray 10.6 system disc is obviously for a later Mac.
Mac mini (Mid 2007) - Technical Specifications
At this point I'm afraid that your options are very limited.
    1. Call Apple, have your serial # handy and ask for a replacement Tiger disc set. Problem is that it wouldn't be of much use, except for maybe running the Apple Hardware Test.
Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ
    2. Purchase a Retail Snow Leopard Upgrade disc.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
As for the RAM, if 2GB is shown in both Apple / About This Mac and in the Activity Monitor then there is a pretty good chance that's it OK. Of course it is hard to test without the original disc set and in your case may need to be done with a third party RAM checker like Memtest OS X

  • Mountain Lion - endless kernel panics - can anyone diagnose?

Been having issues with Kernel Panics since Mountain Lion came out. I downloaded and installed a few months ago and got Kernel panics, so I formatted and sent to apple and they replaced the RAM, which did absolutely nothing. So I went backwards to Snow Leopard, and then recently came back now that we're on 10.8.2 to use Mountain Lion and I am still getting kernel panics. Can anyone diagnose where I could begin as far as removing software, etc, from this kernel panic? I'm pretty comp savvy but the kernel panic appears an endless stream of nonsense to me:
PS: You will notice in this kernel panic I have some FireWire audio interface connected. Just to be clear, this kernel panic can come with or without any periphreals plugged in

  • IMac won't start without install disc

Hi, I'm new to all of this. I tried resetting my admin password using install disc on my iMac as I'd forgotten it. Now iMac won't start without disc. If disc is ejected on restart apple logo flashes between no entry sign and folder with "?" on it. Will start up with install disc in, but then wants me to choose language and install OS. Tried repairing and verifying HD and all seems ok. Tried holding option key and selecting HD on startup, but same outcome - choose language and install OS. How do I get back to normal desk top? Do I have to install OS again? Will I lose data? Please, please help! Thanks.

It should only take a minute or so at most to boot from the DVD.
If your sure you have the correct Install Disk for that iMac, I'd start over. Then if it still doesn't work then perhaps a trip to your Local Apple Service Provider with the Disk or Disk and iMac is in order.

Alternately using the correct Disk as per the following article, see if you can run the Apple Hardware Test? > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

  • Kernel panics at boot--starts after 10 restarts--weird AHT results

I'm a long-time Mac user although I don't have as much OSX experience as I did with 6,7,8 and 9.
I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) iMac G5 20" 1.8ghz. In the past few weeks it started suddenly darkening the screen and display a message saying it needed to restart randomly. Sometimes while being used actively, sometimes while just sitting there. I thought about it maybe being a RAM problem given the nature of the crashes but it was so infrequent that I decided it was more likely a software problem, and put it on my "to deal with later" list.
But now it's started doing that or displaying the "Unix-text-overlaid-on-the-screen" panics during startup. Once it's on and running (usually after half a dozen false-starts) it seems to be basically OK unless it goes to sleep, at which point it does the same thing on awakening. It does still crash on occasion after starting up but not usually. Takes a good 10 minutes of restarts to get it going in the morning, though -- almost like it has to "warm up" or something.
I ran the Hardware Test from the CD and it reported an error in the RAM. Originally came with 1 GB from Apple, so I pulled the offending chip from the slot that AHT named, the problem seemed to go away, hardware test reported no problems, so I thought OK I'll just buy 2 GB and upgrade while I fix it.
Did that and got the same problems. Hardware test reported RAM problems again but with the other slot this time -- with two brand new RAM chips. All of these chips test out fine in a PC with the same RAM specs using MemTest86+, including the original Apple RAM. (all 400mhz 184-pin DIMM CL3 from good vendors) I've tried half a dozen configurations moving known-good RAM in and out of the machines I have available, and it now seems completely random -- sometimes even the original RAM passes hardware test on that machine, the same RAM that initially failed it. I even bought 2GB of brand new RAM with the same results. All of this RAM works just fine in two PCs under heavy use.
It even gives the error while trying to start off a CD (i.e. the Tiger install disk), although I don't think it's ever done it while starting from the Hardware Test disk (but it may have always been "warm" by the time I got to that...)
So I don't think it's actually a RAM problem, but that's the only info Hardware Test will give me.
I've tried resetting PRAM, resetting the Open Firmware, resetting the SMU, no luck (all based on advice from other threads here). Repaired disk permissions, did a full disk repair while booted off a Tiger install disk. Safe mode does the same thing.
    Any ideas?
Couldn't this have happened a month ago while it was still under warranty? (rhetorical!)
I take it buying the extended AppleCare warranty now won't help me with this issue?

    Tom,
what a pain eh? Same thing happened with me, turned out being my logic board. Thankfully it occured a few months before my warrant expired. My logic board messed up again after my warranty expired, although it was covered because it was the same issue as when I brought it in the last time.
    hope this helps,
    ed

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The report implicates a problem involving the *com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver 1.0* and closely following *com.Symantec.kext.SymAPComm 10.1.0* and *com.symantec.kext.SymEvent2 10.1.0* kext files.
The *Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access* is often reported in memory related problems.
It could be that one or both of the kexts/drivers are outdated or corrupt. Either condition could result in the error within system memory.
Check for updates for any Symantec software. Temporarily disabling the software may give clues as to involvement or not.
Booting to Safe mode (hold Shift while starting) will disable these and others. If the panics either do or don't occur in Safe mode, we have a clue as how to proceed.
What devices do you use that may use or sync with iTunes? Possibly some audio device?
Here is some reading with good troubleshooting advice:

  • Flash Builder 4.5 can't start with Error 3

Flash Builder 4.5 can't start with error 3 occurred "Please uninstall and reinstall the product".
It is fine after those are done, but this problem occurred again and again after some days.
It is very annoying, please help!

For god's sake will anybody from Adobe say something about this?
I'm having the same issue and it's f***ing annoying.
"Please uninstall and reinstall the product" is not an acceptable error message.
    Please provide a workaround.

  • My CS can't start with error code 16

How can I find the CS5.5 serial number under MAC OS X if I want to reinstall it? My CS can't start with error code 16, it says configuration error.

Please refer the KB Doc : http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/configuration-error- cs5.html

  • Can you start with a jpeg?

My brother likes the functions on the camera raw panel and bridge.
He believes it will save him time over just photoshop.
Can he start with a jpeg image? If so, how does he activate the camera raw panel?
We have Bridge CS3 and Photoshop CS2. We have the Camera Raw 3.7 plugin.

If you REALLY are using Bridge CS3 with Photoshop CS2, I too would like to know how you are doing that. The capability to work with JPEG and TIFF images in Camera Raw was not introduced until Camera Raw 4.x, which is only compatible with Photoshop CS3.

My phone will not turn on, therefore I have received a replacement phone but am wanting to reset my old device. It is not locating it because it says it is offline however I cannot turn it on at all. Can I start with my new device and not reset the old? Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's been a week without a phone

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

  • How to start my mac book pro safe mode?

my mac book pro is not start up but showing white screen . what should i do ?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • How to start iTunes in XP? "safe mode" produces: "A rental is being transferred..."

iTunes does not become visible.  Task Manager shows it has started (in Processes).  Trying "safe Mode" only comes up with the message:

and there is no "Continue" button.  I'm trying to run itunes for the 1st time after installing it (from iTunesSetup.exe  v.11.0.2.26).  I'm not ready for any "rental".
