Kernel Panic on iMac with Pixelated Video Issues
One of our work iMacs has been having weird pixelate video issues recently. Sometimes previews of program windows will freeze on screen... and as you move the window around the screen "erases" this preview from the LCD... It is a 2006 24" White iMac 6,1. Now we get some Kernel Panics with the following error message. Please help me decipher it. Thanks!

Re: Kernel Panic on iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.1, 4gb RAM
27-sep-2011 11:53 (in response to jose guzman) Launch the Apple Hardware Test program, run the extended tests at least twice, and then download and run Rember. All indications are that you have bad or flaky RAM.
27" i7 iMac 10.6.8 , Mac OS X (10.7.1), G4 450 MP 1.5 GB RAM w/(10.5.8/10.4.11/9.2.2)
I did that and it doesn't work

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
Do you???
Thanx
JayI'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments. -

Sorry, don't understand this one. If you mean is there built-in malware detection? Yes, there is some limited malware detection. Applies to 10.7 too.

mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac with lion video=freeze, will not restart for 30-60 minutes , today it took 14 hours before power button would restart it , is anyone else having a long restart after this problem?
Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here. -
10.7.1 and 10.7.2 - Kernel Panic on Boot with Filevault
My filevaulted systems are having kernel panic on boot with both 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 updates. I have to connect the time capsule to get it to boot and fix disk permissions before I can pull the firewire out and reboot by itself.
Anyone else?Hi, Brian. I had only keyboard and mouse plugged into USB. I variously had a pair of LaCie 1TB drives in the FW800 in daisychain.
It is now working again after running the single-user mode scripts from Leopard Cache Cleaner.
It may arise again, but the initial cause remains mysterious, the intermediate cause perhaps being a polluted boot cache. I'm hoping I'm good from here. (fingers crossed) -
Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card
I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
Any help would be appreciated.
PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.8)I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products. -
Kernel Panic on iMac G4 (flat panel) 800
Recently I have been getting intermittent "kernel panics". After running the hardware tests CD once it flagged a problem with video memory "Error Code Video RAM disp/14/4 on the first test. i unplugged all USB cables (iPod and printer) and ran again. this time it passed. Does anyone know what this code means? I have just discovered that the video card is a chip on the mother board. If it is a video RAM chip problem, does anyone have any suggestions for repair? Can the motherboard be replaced at a reasonable cost or is the iMac G4 doomed?
There are sources for refurbished or repaired and guaranteed
replacement logic boards for the iMac G4 models of Macintosh;
some of the parts vary in price, most I've read about have a
core deposit or want the old logic board (with video processor
& its VRAM on it) in exchange as part of their pricing scheme.
Depending on which 800 MHz model you have, the price may
vary; and if the price is too high, you could consider a different
computer of the same model as a replacement; and then have
this current one for a source of parts, since displays and other
items can be costly if you needed to buy one at some point.
The kernel panic message certainly does point out a video
issue, and that can be a deal breaker when a logic board is
the greater part of a repair cost, plus skilled labor & testing.
Some individuals and a few companies have these for sale,
of those, some of the machines are repaired and have some
kind of short term guarantee; even wegenermedia.com has
on occasion, some iMac G4 machines for sale. A search in
general, using the google site, can help find several of them.
Not all offers are created or invented equal; be (a) ware.
The USB 2.0 iMac G4s are a bit more robust, and can run
more RAM (to 2GB) and if the price is right, have all the
charm and style the first iMac G4 700/800 had. If the need
to have newer software and such arises, the Apple Store's
certified refurbished pages may be a place to check; and
then re-check, since their inventory moves out quickly.
Good luck & happy computing, in any case! -
Repeated kernel panic on iMac late 2009
Dear all,
A couple of weeks ago, my iMac 27" late 2009 started repeatedly crashing with a kernel panic.
Thinking this might be hard-drive related, I brought my iMac for repair under the hard drive replacement programme. Which means I have a virtually empty hard drive with only Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed and a couple of third-party software packages, the only one installing extensions being (AFAIK) TechTool Pro, DropBox and perhaps Chrome.
Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem.
I then tested the RAM with TechTool Pro, which didn't find any issue. I also tried and removing all RAM modules but one and progressively adding all the other modules back in, but could not figure out whether one of the modules was faulty: the Mac worked fine for at least 20 minutes after each restart, at which point I added another module. Once all the modules were added back and after an hour of use, though, kernel panics reappeared.
I then thought about a temperature problem. Indeed, I have just moved to Singapore, where temperature and humidity is quite high all year long. Below is what is reported by Temperature Monitor - from what I have read elsewhere, this does not seem outside of the ordinary:
* Ambient air: 30°C
* CPU A Heatseak: 44°C
* CPU Core 1: 47°C
* CPU Core 2: 40°C
* Display Screen Proximity: 39°C
* Graphics Processor Heatsink 1: 54°C
* Graphic Processor Temperature D: 54°C
* Main Logic Board: 56°C
* Northbridge Heat Sink: 69°C
Kernel packages are quite hard to reproduce: they can come in very close succession and then the Mac can work fine for a few hours... For instance, I've just restarted from a series of 3 kernel panics but can now safely post this message.
Any idea what this could be related to?
I've copied below the error log - maybe you can find some useful information in it:

JonathanYou don't have any extensions that can break OS X and your log indicates a graphic crash, so it looks like the graphic card is damaged. Take the Mac to an Apple Store.
If the problem started after the hard drive replacement and Apple determintes that this problem was caused during the replacement, the graphic card replacement will be free because you have a 90-day warranty after the hard drive replacement -
Multiple Kernel panics on iMac using OS 10.4.8
Hi, firts let me aplogize for the long post...
In the past week I have experienced 3 kernel panics. not sure why. I could have chalked it up to a sw update had the first one not happen a few hours before the update.
The only thing I know of that could possibly be an issue are my twain scanner drivers from epson as they were only compatible with ppc and not intel. and doublecommand which had some errors so i removed it.
during one of the crashes i was using remote desktop, which didnt really surprise me since its ms, but the last two were while I was using firefox which has had no new updates prior to this happening.
i have read the developers notes on apple for deciphering panics but they are all based on ppc and not intel, so not helpful.
I ran the hw test over an dover for about 2 hrs, nothing wrong there...
I downloaded and ran cocktail and deep cleaned my caches...
Disk util says all is ok... also ran the permissions fix.
below are the panics, they are all exactly the same with the exception that one occurred on the other cpu, any insight would be helpful. the timestamps in the system log that match the panic dont tell me much either, it appears the the tiemstamp om the panic is the actual shutdown/restart time and when i view the system log i see nothing popping out prior to the reboot, aside from a highmem trap and a few timestamps that look out of place.... i prefer troubsleshooting and debugging myself so if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great!

I basically installed from scratch, then added programs/peripheals one at a time until the KP came back. I am going on over 2 days now with no KP, so I think I may have it narrowed down to some Logitech drivers.
I also swapped out my RAM to eliminate bad RAM... I got KP on both sets of RAM.
My suggestion is to remove all peripheals/drivers/programs that are "non" apple and add them one at a time until the KP comes back. Using stuff that is not Intel compliant could be the issue.
Does anyone know how to turn up debugging or make the console log more robust to collect more data? -
Constant Kernel Panics on iMac G4
Hi,
I have an original 800 MHz iMac g4 with Mac OS 10.4 on it.
Ever since I installed an Airport Card a couple days ago, I've been getting Kernel Panics. I am sure that the problem is the Airport Card but I checked the Kernel Panic Log and I think Mac OS thinks differently. So my question is what is causing the Kernel Panics? Is it the Airport Card or something else?
Here is the Kernel Panic Log:

Ethernet Bridge
Please note this requires mac os x 10.5 or greater to configure or windows xp to configure.
Ethernet Bridge "The versatile Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge can make any wired Ethernet-equipped device a part of your wireless network." from linksys example: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-RE1000-Wireless-N-Range-Extender/dp/B005FDXMJS/ref =sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314563758&sr=8-1
Once configured, you can use it on any ethernet port.
Airport ExpressAirport Express is an external unit and you can configure it as a bridge. 802.11n ( I believe you will need a more modern version of Mac OS X to configure. Sadly, Apple uses a configuration program to configure, not a web browser. )

My older iMac is having frequent kernel panics. They occur most often after waking the computer up or while online. If I do a safe boot I am able to go online and put the computer to sleep and wake it up with no problem. Does the fact that it seems to work okay in safe mode shed any light on the source of the problem? I just hate to have reload everything. Thanks.
iMac Mac OS X (10.3.9)Thank you for some good info. I thought I would post the most recent panic log, if that can be helpful.

Again, many thanks.
iMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) -
10.7.5 causes kernel panics!!! Mac Mini issue?
After updating my Mac Mini (late-2009, 2.53GHz core 2 duo, 4GB ram, no mods) to Lion 10.7.5, the message "You need to restart your computer. Shut down by holding the power button down, then restart" appears when shutting down, spawning a kernel panic. These have been submitted to Apple through the normal method. There are no other symptoms, but irrespective of this my Mac does not shut down correctly under 10.7.5 and kernal panics should not be happening. I've reverted to 10.7.4 now which solves the problem.
Other users have reported this, such as 'stuckis' on a MacMini 2011, 2,5 Core i5 - this user even downloaded the update a second time and the problem reappeared.
Given it happens on different model Mac Minis, I think the update is the source of the problem (at least on Mini models). Have any other users seen this issue??
Apple's track record isn't great at the moment - I had to uninstall Mountain Lion because it was causing major kernel panics when attempting to shut down my Mac (probably caused by the use of a Samsung TV as a monitor - if I was cynical I'd say it was deliberate by Apple over their ongoing mobile phone battles), so upgrading to ML at the moment isn't a solution.Yep, read most of those when trying to sort a similar problem when I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I managed to narrow down the problem a bit, but given it only happened after the upgrade (and nothing else had changed) it was almost certainly something in Mountain Lion that caused it. As it turns out it looks like it was related to using a Samsung TV as a monitor or possibly nvidia drivers under ML. I've love to know if these issues have been resolved, because I thought ML was excellent.
That said, given ML is already up to version .3 it seems to me there must have been a number of issues with it, and maybe these have sneaked down into Lion now? As for Lion on my Mac, downgrading to 10.7.4 fixes the problem, no more KPs, so as far as I can see it has to be OS related.
The impression I get is that recent OS releases from Apple have not been tested very well, particularly with slightly older models such as mine. I've always thought the one of the good things about Apple was the longevity of their machines (I was using a perfectly good 2001 G4 Powermac before I got my Mac Mini in 2009!!).
Rant over! I'll read the tutorial you've kindly provided the link for and perhaps try updating again...

New iMac 07 horrible video issues in Magic Garageband
I have a 2.0GHz iMac (Mid 2007) with the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB graphics, when I click on magic garageband the video has interlaced lines and the colors are horribly distorted. When I click on "audition" then "change genre" it quickly adjusted back to normal than quickly went to its interlaced look. I am going to try to reinstall GB from my DVD. I am also having unrelated video issues in Doom 3 even after the universal updater patch, the video resolution is terrible and I am getting artifacts all over the screen as I play.
Unfortunately, the pictures are no longer available. But I think our brand new iMac 07 has the same issues. It started with corrupted graphics when opening or closing the curtain in Garage Band. But it's getting worse, just have a look at my screenshots:

Kernel panic / Internet access with a bad AirPort card
My iBook G4 started suffering kernel panics just over a week ago. They have rapidly increased in frequency to the extent that it can take several attempts to boot up because they have started occurring during the boot up process (originally they occurred after the iBook had been on for a while).
I've looked through the forum and have seen that there seem to be some common causes -RAM, AirPort card, or something to do with the HD. I ran disk utility on the HD and it didn't find any problems and I also successfully ran the 'repair disk permissions'. I have tried taking out the RAM -that didn't do anything. The kernel panic does frequently occur when I am either using Mail or Safari, but as I've said, it also occurs when I'm booting up -does the fact that it happens when I boot up mean that it cannot be the AirPort card (which incidentally is not under the keyboard -so it must be inside)?
Earlier today I switched off AirPort and was able to work on the computer for almost three hours without any kernel panic (but also without internet access). Less than a minute after switching it back on, it froze again.
If this does mean that the problem is with the AirPort card, I have a question about internet access. I use the iBook on a wireless network that stems from a modem with a Mac downstairs and I do not have any internet cables, or a phone line, in the room where the iBook is used. Is it possible to use something like AirPort Express even with a bad AirPort card? And does AirPort Express connect to the iBook, or to the main modem downstairs?
Apologies for so many questions and many thanks for any help you are able to give -this has been driving me around the bend for the past week?Update:
An acquaintance who works for Apple suggested that before assuming that the problem was the AirPort card / buying further equipment, I should boot up with the original installation disk in and use the disk utility function to 'repair disk'. I did that and got a 'Volume Header needs minor repair' message. It repaired that & I restarted the iBook. I was able to do an update back-up to my external hard drive & all was fine until I switched AirPort back on -there was an instant kernel panic.
I figured that it couldn't hurt to run the Apple Hardware Test -did that and restarted again. Was able to open Mail (AirPort was on) but then the AirPort connection disappeared and the pointer froze, but there was no kernel panic screen. I had to force quit -restarted again. This time I was able to use Mail, downloaded a song on iTunes, and was on the internet for about 45mins before the connection disappeared and the pointer froze again. I could force quit the app but with a frozen pointer I ended up having to force quit again.
I waited a while and then booted up again (without problem) but this time I was told that there was no Airport card present! Shut down and reran the Hardware Test (which said that AirPort 'Passed'). When I restarted AirPort was briefly there but disappeared when I opened AirPort Utility and at this point the pointer also froze. I did force quit to get out of the app and then there was a kernel panic. Is this now pretty conclusive that the AirPort card is the problem?
I would appreciate any feedback -I've had a very frustrating week with this.
Thanks.
