Kernel Panic under 10.7.5

I'm experiencing what appears to be a kernel panic, that freezes my iMac Quad Core i7 w/ 8gb RAM, running 10.7.5.  The freeze started after updating from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5.  It appears to occur randomly, but my screen will freeze, except for mouse movement...I cannot click windows, open close applications, force quite, etc.  I have to perform a hard shutdown to restart my computer.  I've viewed the system logs in the console and found the following entry at the time of freeze:
Oct  3 17:42:12 President-iMac kernel[0]: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **
Oct  3 17:42:12 President-iMac kernel[0]: ** GPU Debug Info Start **

Oct  3 17:42:12 President-iMac kernel[0]: 0x00000001
Oct  3 17:42:12: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
with the following repeating dozens of times:

*with the X's replaced with different hex values.
Does this mean anything to anyone?
Please help.
Thanks!

Same problem here, Late 2009 27" iMac Core i5, 10.7.5 (11G63) ATI Radeon HD 4850
This issue seems to be all over the Apple discussions and Mac forums on the internet. I suspect 10.7.5 (and 10.8.2) included some firmware updates, possibly to the graphics - GPU, that are causing the issue, however Apple don't appear to be owning up to it.
Various people have had success doing wildly different things, e.g. updating SSD firmware, reinstalling 10.7.4 (didn't work for me), changing out memory, SMC reset, etc. but I can see no universal solution in all of this.
I've been able to boot in Safe Mode OK, but even though I have ethernet, internet, email, etc. I can't get to other network resources or use Parallels, etc. I enabled SSH in sharing, and then used PuTTy from my Windows 7 laptop to monitor kernel.log, system.log, so at least I can capture whats happening when it crashes after a normal bootup.
I booted up this morning after leaving it off overnight, seems to be going OK, but I have no applications running apart from the Time Machine backup. In the last few days it seems to crash quicker when I run Safari or Chrome, or Firefox, possibly anything that uses Java or Flash, I don't know. Also if I open a VM under Parallels Desktop.
Its all a bit random.
I've also reduced my display resolution from 2560x1440 to 2048x1152

  • Kernel Panic under leopard

    Hi there,
I've gotten kernel panics. Several a day since I upgraded to Leopard.
This is what the report says:
    Backtrace continue...
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.baltalk. driver. DoubleCommand (1.6.5)@0x4fc33000-->0x4fc38fff

    com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.5)@0x6a5000->0x6dcfff
I used to have DoubleCommand installed and uninstalled/removed it. When I do a search in spotlight I can't find any reference to DoubleCOmmand.
Not sure how to interpret to anything else? Does anyone know what my next steps ought to be so I don't have kernel panics? Thanks a lot.

    Just got my first:

  • XDCAM EX SxS Cards will give Kernel Panic under Snow Leopard.

In my conversation with Sony support they advised me that unfortunately
Snow Leopard is not currently supported by the current versions of XDCAM
    related software's from Sony.
Since this is a very recent release from Apple that involves significant
change to the Mac OS it may take several months, perhaps winter or
spring for full Snow Leopard support from Sony. The exact schedule is
    still TBD.
It is therefore recommended to continue using the most recent release of
Leopard to maintain smooth operation of the XDCAM software within the
    Mac environment.
For your reference the latest Sony software release versions are as
    below:
    As of August 26th 2009
    PDW-U1 v 2.420
PDW-U1 Utility for PC or Mac v 2.21
FAM Driver 2.20 comes with the PDZ-1 software or XDT for Mac
    PDZ-1 v 2.60
XDCAM Viewer 2.30 PC only separate from PDZ-1
XDCAM TRANSFER for FCP v 2.10.0
    EX Browser 2.5.1
Thanks for your continued support of XDCAM!

The best solution to the thumbnail issue seems to be to abandon XDCAM Transfer altogether until Sony deigns to offer a version compatible with Snow Leopard, and use Log and Transfer within Final Cut. You must instal the Sony plugin downloaded from here:
    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads.bbsccms-assets -micro-xdcamex-downloads-LogTransferUtilityAppleFCP.shtml.
I discovered this after downgrading from Snow Leopard so as to keep working without having to manually import every shot... but have since re-upgraded to Snow Leopard, and everything works fine as above.

  • Multiple kernel panics related to java and NTFS

Over the past week, I have experienced at least three separate kernel panics, but only two have had their event recorded by the System Diagnostic Reports.  I was wondering if there are any known issues that could cause kernel panic, such as the ones my system has received.  I have attached the result of the most recent panic below.
Please note that I am running OS X 10.7.4 on a Mac Pro (early 2008) with 14GB RAM.  At the time the panics occurred, CrashPlan was in the process of backing up files (to CrashPlan Central) from my Boot Camp partition, which has Windows XP installed on a NTFS drive.  I mention this, because the fault appears to be related to NTFS and Java.  My understanding is that CrashPlan uses Java, and I don't believe I have many other (if any) applications running on it typically.
I should also mentioned that I may have had Parallels Desktop running at the same time, and had a Windows XP virtual running the CrashPlan client for Windows that was overseeing the backup on my Synology DiskStation NAS.  At this time, I do not believe this is related to the panic, as I have been using Parallels in such a manner for weeks prior, and never received a panic.  Also, while the CrashPlan client in Windows also uses java, due to the VM sandbox, I believe the java is handled internally by Parallels, and doesn't utilize any java thread outside of Parallels.
As I mentioned earlier, I have two recorded panics apparently caused by the same issue, having occurred in the "java" thread and related to "ntfs_attr_record_move_for_attr_list_attribute()".  I noticed that the other report also includes a section at the bottom for "System Profile" with information, such as:
    Model: MacPro3,1, BootROM MP31.006C.B05, 8 processors, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2.8 GHz, 14 GB, SMC 1.25f4
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770, ATI Radeon HD 5770, PCIe, 1024 MB
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1, 4 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x80AD, 0x485900503132354637324350344E332D5336
    ... ETC ...
Why would some kernel panics include the system profile while others do not?  Are the panic logs "complete" or can they be incomplete due to the kernel locking up before writing the entire log?
I have been using this system since 2008, and gone through numerous OS and Parallels updates over the years.  At this time, I appear to be update-to-date on all software.  I do not recall ever having received a kernel panic in the past, and if I have, it would have been extremely infrequent with the last occurring many years ago.

What might I find by running XP natively?  I won't get kernel panics under XP.  I haven't run it natively in many months.
I thought that Parallels actually uses Paragon NTFS (or at least a variant of it) to read and write to the NTFS drives.  It's possible that I am mistaken, as many years have passed since I last looked at Paragon NTFS.
Is the Paragon driver intended to replace the OS X default NTFS driver or Parallels?  I'm not sure how Parallels will respond to the Paragon driver.
Parallels should be up-to-date.  It reports build 7.0.15094.
Regarding Windows XP, this is the only system I have that is still running XP on Boot Camp.  I rarely use it these days, and wouldn't be now, if I wasn't trying to back it up using CrashPlan.  My plan is upgrade when I have time.  All my other systems have Windows 7 on the Boot Camp drives.
I do have a few VMs that use XP, because I haven't had the chance to replace them with Windows 7 installs, and they are generally used for infrequent development tasks and for running Beyond Compare.  Also, I believe there may have been license issues with the version of Windows 7 that I'm own when used with VMs (meaning they're not allowed) ... but don't quote me on this.
I noticed that Riser B/DIMM 1 and 2 do not report the Manufacturer.  I'm pretty sure the 2GB and 4GB DIMMs are OWC.  The 1GB DIMMs are OEM from Apple.

  • Kernel Panics when esata is connected

    hello
I am doing video editing and install 2 esata cards into my mac pro 2,1
whenever i connect to either of these cards i get a kernel panic...
does anyone know what i can do to solve this?
    thanks for any helpful suggestions
    simon

You likely have a Silicon Image 3132-based eSATA card. If so, you need to install the latest SI3132 (1.1.11 Beta) driver update to avoid kernel panics under 10.6.
A search on Accelr8yourmac.com will fill in the details but you can start with this page:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct09/101209.html#S26089

  • Continuos Mac Kernel Panics (launchd)

I have continously, for quite a while now, been receiving the same Kernel Panic under "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: launchd." Originally, this Kernel Panic was a result of using SoundFlower, which I uninstalled back in February of 2014. Before that, Skype was the source of my first Kernel Panic in December of 2013. Avast, and anti-virus software, seemed to be the cause of some recent Kernel Panics under launchd as well, but I've uninstalled it and continued to receive the panics.
Here is the full error report: http://pastebin.com/5AAsFqFE
Appreciate the support. Thanks to all that help.
    Other Information:
    - Doing my own previous research, I was told that the panic could possibly be because of my RAM. I do have 3rd party RAM installed, so I figured that may be true. The RAM is from Crucial and its 16 GB (8GB x 2). Sadly, I have tested my RAM numerous times with the app "Remember" and never received any errors regarding my RAM. I also have swapped the slots of my RAM, just to be safe, which did help for a short time.
    - I also suspect it must be something with my monitors. I do have 2 Acer monitors. One of them is I think 1 version younger than the other. After a panic, that older monitor is purple until login.

    Hi,
I don't see anything obvious there.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Help Resolving Kernel Panic Before Leopard!

Hi all! Before I begin, FYI: I read the article on Kernel panics, and I'm attempting to follow the instructions to the letter about how to report one and get help here. Apologies in advance if I'm doing something wrong.
I've had my iMac 2GHZ for 2 years, and I've NEVER had a kernel panic--until today, the day before I want to install Leopard. Go figure. Anyhow, if someone could possibly let me know what I'm dealing with/help me out, I'd love to proceed with my archive and install of Leopard. (As of now, I have not yet opened the package. lol)
Here's the log of the Kernel Panic--under it, I've listed what programs were active at the time, and what was connected.

Running at the time: Mail, Safari (using yahoo's new home page), Adium.
It occurred as I opened an aol email IN APPLE's MAIL app.
    Connected to the machine:
    HP 3210 Printer (off),
    ION USB 2.0 External HD,
External flash reader (empty, via a USB 2.0 hub),
Wacom Tablet (via USB 2.0 hub).
Any steps I can take? Diskwarrior? Disk First Aid? Should I just move on with my archive and install?
    Thanks in advance guys.
    null

    OK!
I detached my ion firewire external HD (Which has always played nice with my machine lol), as well as USB 2.0 hub which had 2-3 items attached.
I restarted, and attempted to recreate what happened. I opened Safari, then Mail, then Adium. Signed on to Adium, and began checking mail--which is when the panic happened.
So far, nothing... is there a next step?
PS: Two things you should know:
    1) I ran Diskwarrior (successfully) a day ago BEFORE this happened--would that have caused any issues?
    2) AFTER the panic, I ran Disk First Aid from an external HD startup disk--everything was ok!
Am I in the clear for an archive and install of Leopard? I have no problem trying anything else you might suggest!
    Thanks in advance

  • Kernel Panic's under certain conditions

Is there anyone else getting a Kernel Panic anytime iTunes is running concurrently with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge? Or am I the only lucky one? This is happening with enough frequency such that I am begining to wonder if this v10.4.7 thinks it is now part of the Microsoft family.
Any input greatly appreciated. The latest Panic.Log below:

LOL! Thanks. Been in IT for 23 years. I disabled the Widgets pursuant to the URL provided. E.g., I'm taking the least path of resistance first.

    3. Widgets
Some poorly written widgets for Mac OS X 10.4 access memory in ways that the system was not designed to accept. One such widget that has since been updated to avoid kernel panics is Ministat. If you recently downloaded a widget, try disabling it to see if it makes a difference. To disable a widget under Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.4.1 you can use Widget Manager. With Mac OS X 10.4.2, Apple has created a special widget called Manage Widgets which can be activated by enabling the widget toolbar (hit the + with the circle around it in the bottom left corner).

  • Kernel Panic When Writting under NTFS Partition

Folks I got an external 1 TB USB hard disk. When I tried to save some files (downloads from deluge) on it I get a kernel panic. Which files/logs can I provide to help you? The system simply hangs and all keyboard leads start to blink.  I'm using Linux isengard 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 18 18:32:16 CET 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux. It is the default arch linux kernel. If I write a small file things seem to be okay. Any ideas?

    $ cat /etc/fstab
    <-- post results.

  • Kernel Panic with 10.4.3, 10.4.4

I have a Quicksilver dual 1GHz G4 with 1.25GB of ram. It was ridiculously stable until the 10.4.3 update. With the 10.4.4 update, things got even worse. I now have so many kernel panics as to make the machine unusable.
I've run through the "Resolving Kernel Panics" page step-by-step... run DiskWarrior, run the machine with "plugs-out" (NO FireWire or USB devices plugged in), archive & installed, ran with each stick of ram individually, repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM, run "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" in Open Firmware.... nothing fixes it, nothing seems to be the culprit.
Crash log below. Can anyone help PLEASE?

Sorry, forgot to include that info. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and the TechTool Pro suite of hardware tests.... all passed. (And yes, I had pulled everything FireWire and USB except the Apple keyboard and mouse, which were plugged directly into the Mac.) In addition to the Open Firmware "reset-nvram" and "reset-all", I also hit the CUDA switch on the motherboard. The machine is still giving me kernel panics. The only thing I haven't done yet is pull the hard drives and clean-install onto a new drive. (I hope to do that tonight.)
What's interesting is that the dim-out "You have to restart your computer" screen is gone, and has been replaced by white-on-black text generator text overwriting the GUI display, and after restart there's no "report to Apple" dialog, nor is there any log entry. Having Console and Activity Monitor show nothing out of the ordinary.
For what it's worth, I'm "forcing" the KP by running iTunes with the visualizer running, figuring that's the closest thing to me sitting at it doing stuff and waiting for it to crash out. When it panics, the music goes into a loop of the last 1/2-second of music (i.e. "dit-dit-dit-dit-dit-dit...")
Another item of note is that 10.4.0 (after clean install) and 10.4.2 do not have this problem. The panics only occur under 10.4.3 and 10.4.4.
The text of the white-on-black text is retyped as follows. Notice that the DAR record is the only thing different between the two:

  • Late 2009 imac- Mavericks, Kernel Panics- checkerboard screen- only works in Safe Mode now.

Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions
    From Repair Permissions (Disk utility):

All RAM tested individually and Passed- Ran a Ram memory test as well.
New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
    "com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..

  • Constant Kernel Panics- Please help!

    Hi,
I am currently running Mountaint Lion 10.8.5 (haven't updated to mavericks quite yet) on a 2.53 GHz Intel core 2 duo Macbook Pro.  I'm not sure of the year it was made but if that's really important I can look up the serial.  Anyways, this thing is making me crazy.  Kernel Panics ("your computer shut down because of a problem") have become an extraordinarily common part of my life.  The more demanding the task (LOW resolution games would be the most demanding), the more frequent the Panics. Sometimes it even happens when I'm just browsing or watching netflix.  Usually before the kernel panic occurs the computer has heated up quite a bit and the fan starts wurring like an engine.  I do consistently use my laptop on my bed; I heard that may be affecting the airflow to the vents.  But I assure you the Panics occur on flat surfaces as well.  I bought this machine used so I don't know it's full history, but under my care, it has taken no spills, drops, or damages otherwise.  I have tried many things to help: Repairing my hard drive with Disk Utility, resetting my PRAM, cleaning things up with MacKeeper, even global virus scans that come up clean.  I don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I have tried all the tools at the disposal of my knowledge and I am really starting to get frustrated.
My last OS update was recent; far after panics started to be a problem.
I pray to god this is not a hardware issue.
Any help would be of the highest appreciation

PS I don't know if anyone could help with this, but my machine also runs unbelievably slow considering it has 8 whopping Gigabytes of RAM.

    Aaron is a boy,
you can replace your two 4 GB 1333 MHz memory modules with two 4 GB 1066 MHz memory modules, so that you can continue to have a total of 8 GB of RAM installed. Having the proper speed RAM installed in your MacBook Pro will make a world of difference compared to its current performance. The little white booklet that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro shows how to replace the memory modules, if you’re comfortable with performing minor upgrades; the important thing is to discharge any static electricity on you by touching something metallic before handling the memory modules or touching anything inside of your MacBook Pro. If you’d be more comfortable with someone else doing the memory module installation, then any competent computer shop would be able to do it.

  • G5 "Q87" Dual 2.7GHz - Persistent Kernel Panic

    Hello All,
I have a Power Mac G5 (trusty old pro audio box) which has been experiencing regular Kernel Panics (grey screen of death) for the past month or so.
I'm wondering if it might be the Logic Board or something having to do in particular with either the SATA or memory areas which might be having the trouble.
My G5's specs and latest Kernel Panic report are as follows:
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz "Q87 970fx" model | 8GB | 1TB HD | 10.4.11
RME 9632 PCI based audio interface. (connected to Lexicon PCM 80 via S/PDIF which coincides with the Kernel Panics but may be a coincidence?)
The Kernel Panic mainly happens whenever I save a large group of samples in Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5 or when playing back large (usually orchestral) multi-instrument sample presets in Wave Editor or other audio editing programs. Crashes also occur whenever large audio files (300MB+) are loaded or are being edited/converted.
Can anyone decipher the meaning of the Kernel Panic report? I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

I ran Rember and there were some test failures. It doesn't look like the program is able to tell me which DIMM is bad so I'll probably have to go by process of elimination, right?
I'm still hoping to find Apple Hardware Test and/or Apple Service Diagnostic for this particular machine and I'll try other memory test programs as well. For anyone who's interested, here are the results of the memory test by Rember. Perhaps someone could tell by looking which DIMM it might be?

  • 13" Late 2009 White Macbook Kernel Panic

I inherited a late 09 white Macbook from a family member last year and have just started having problems.  I need it to hold out until February when I can finally buy a MB Air or MB Pro (still deciding...) and wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what was causing the kernel panics.  They are pretty infrequent at this time, but when they occur, it takes a good 5-10 restarts before I can finally get the computer back up and running.  Started out with 8 gb of RAM, took one RAM stick out and the computer didn't panic for another week...now we're back to square one with the 4 gb of RAM in the computer.
All I need to know is if any of you fine folks could tell me what the hardware issue is so I can find out if it's a quick fix that would last long enough to get a new MB in February.  I appreciate the wisdom of those of you who know how to decipher this--thanks in advance!

    Hi
It seems that there is a problem with some component in the motherboard, this happened with me too with my Macbook pro retina display. Take it to a genius bar, and tell them of this problem. They will replace the motherboard or give you a new laptop if its under warranty.
