  • Kernel_task running above 500% CPU load on my Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.4

I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to OSX 9.0.4 and the system is running sluggishly slow, Activity Monitor showing kernel_task always running above 500% CPU load, system fan always running loud at startup but laptop is not overheating.  Below is the EtreCheck report, hoping if anyone can help me fix this issue, much appreciate it.  Btw, I have done the SMC reset, but nothing has helped.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Has there been a fix for the dreaded kernel_task eating up all CPU problem yet???

Since I bought this pile of garbage in 2011 and went overseas I've been struggling with it. This kernel_task issue is completely insane and a lot of pepole experience it as well, so has Apple released a fix or has anyone figured out a proper way to get rid of it?

I have this same issue on my iMac after an upgrade. My girlfriend's iMac (same model) was unaffected. So the problem seems to affect random machines of all ages and types. I have a solution but not a fun one.
@ScottC75 : The CPU percentage shows what % of an individual core is being used. If you have a multi-core chip (which most Macs do) this can go above 100%
I've read *a lot* of forums on this kernel_task problem with people spouting quite a lot of rubbish.
I first tried everything listed on forums: reinstalling OS X, removing kexts (that apparently stop your computer from overheating), new RAM, tidying up the computer. None of it worked.
One guy said he took three trips to the Apple Store, having his MBP sent off each time; eventually they gave him a brand new MBP of the latest spec. That might be the option for you but I didn't want to be without my computer for that time.
Finally, I did a complete wipe of my Mac. If you boot using the backup partition, or using a USB with an OS X Install on it, the option to 'reinstall' or 'install a new OS X' does not wipe your computer. Once it has finished, you will have all your files and applications still. This did not fix my computer. Instead, you must use Disk Utility first to wipe you Macintosh HD partition and then install. Then you Mac acts like it's brand new. Only this fixed the problem. The massive downside is that I had to backup everything and reinstall all my apps.
This is a drastic measure, and you run the risk of forgetting to backup all the stuff you want. It did work though and was ultimately quicker than going to the Apple Store (even if I might have got a new computer out of it).
In summary, to fix this problem:
    1. I backed up all my files onto an external hard drive!
    2. I booted up to the recovery screen (Command + R or hold the option key at bootup)
    2. In Disk Utility, I 'erased' my 'Macintosh HD' partition
    4. Back on the main recovery screen, I chose to (Re)install OS X.

  • Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks.  PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know.  Thanks

  • Anyone having or had a problem with kernel_task running uploads in back ground and can't figure out what its doing

My iMac is running kernel_task and using a lot of upload bandwidth. I talked to isp this morning he said that I was topping out on the upload side while download was normal. He also said that it started about 3 weeks ago but I've been looking and trying to remember what I did as far as installing or changing setting and I can't figure it out, also using a magicjack on computer but tried without it and still the same and its hard to use the phone when other party only gets every other 4 or 5 words. HELP PLEASE!! driving me crazy.

You have something that is uploading data from your network, so you may have a runaway application doing this. If you quit all your running applications does the problem still exist? If so then you may have a corrupted system process.
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Create a new user account with admin status, then log out of your account and log into the new account. Does the problem still exist?
    Also, try basic repairs:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down intermittently and kernel_task running at 300% constantly

I've bought a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro (early 2011, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3) last month and it was working fine all along until yesterday, when the MBP decides to shut itself down while I was surfing the web through Safari and that's why my problem begins.
What my MBP had shown over the past two days.
    1. Intermittent shutdown, even when the MBP is left there by itself, with or without magsafe adapter.
    2. Instantaneous shutdown whenever I plug in the magsafe adapter.
    3. Activity Monitor shows that kernel_task is running at >300% of CPU usage when booted in normal mode, fan speed is only 2000+rpm.
    4. In safe mode, kernel_task down to <2% CPU usage, MBP will still have intermittent shutdown.

    6. Already performed PRAM reset and SMC reset, situation unchanged.
Looking at all this, I definitely should visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider near my place to get this sorted out. However, if anyone has an inkling of what's going on, I don't mind hearing your comments.
    Thanks!

    5. Uninstalled all third-party applications, problems persist.
    6. Already performed PRAM reset and SMC reset, situation unchanged.
Looking at all this, I definitely should visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider near my place to get this sorted out. However, if anyone has an inkling of what's going on, I don't mind hearing your comments.

  • Kernal_tack and %CPU problems

Over a day my wife's computer (Dual 867) will run up to 70% Kernel CPU usage. Fans are running hard and computer is slow. Restart lowers the CPU usage and starts over again. None of the Mac's at my TV station do this. We have three different OS installations on three different drives and my wife’s is the only OS (10.4.6) that does this. I have performed a fresh install and am starting to think it's the new 200 GB Western Digital HD. Any suggestions?
    Shawn Bockoven

    Hi, Shawn.
The kernel_task process is the heart of the operating system: you'll note it is Process ID (PID) 0. It is involved in scheduling, managing virtual memory, and other activities.
There are a number of items that have historically caused problems resulting in a kernel_task running amok:
    - Back-level versions of APC PowerChute.
    - HP Scan Manager.
    - Back-level versions of Norton Privacy Control.
    - M-Audio Transit drivers prior to version 1.5.9. Initially, M-Audio drivers were incompatible with Tiger. See this page for details or check the M-Audio site for updates.
    - Some reports with Virtual PC v6.x
In addition to the above, here are some things to check:
    1. Assure you have suffieent RAM and free disk space. See my "Problems from insufficent RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ.
    2. An incompatible Startup or Login Item may be at fault. See my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ for steps that might help you with this problem.
    3. See the "Troubleshooting performance problems" section of my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ.
    4. After you encounter this problem, check Console for additional clues.
    Good luck!

  • Google Chrome CPU usage almost 100%

    Hey guys,
so I recently updated from Snow Leopard directly to Mountain Lion and now I have a issue I can't fix by myself.
    I'm using a Macbook Pro Mid 2010, 4gig Ram, 2,4 Intel Dualcore, GT 320M - now running OSX 10.8.3
I've got a 27" secondary display, where I usually enjoy my content Youtube e.g.. It used to work very fluently with no probs at all.
I could run a Skype conv., a Youtube vid, eyeTV and various apps simultaneously without any performance issues.
NOW: I have no other app running but Chrome, open up any random youtube-video and it starts to lag within seconds. When I switch to my 27" screen it shows a CPU usage of around 100% for Chrome and 80% for Pepperflashplayer, going down to 80%; 70% when displaying on my macbook screen.
I've read that RAM upgrade might be recommended for running Lion or ML on "older" macbooks. However during this lags and CPU peaks I still have around 1,5gig of free RAM. I've already installed 'Memory Clean' to monitor my RAM usage and keep it at a certain level.
This happens using      Chrome: Pepperflashplayer + Chrome
                                      Firefox: Shockwaveflash + Firefox
                                       Safari: Flashplayer + Safari
always having almost full cpu usage and extreme graphic lags.
This does not happen when displaying HD content from my hard drive, eyetv and such.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Does this problem occur on another machine or only this
machine. if it is for only this machine, try to uninstall the Flash
    player and install it again.

  • HT1778 process name revisiond running a high cpu

Hey, so I am having a problem with my fan running at high speeds and it causing it to heat up and kill the battery a lot faster. I go to activity monitor and its revsiond running at 99%cpu. I got it to quit once and my fans slowy dropped back down to where i could barley hear them but now its back and I dont know how to fix it. help

You could attempt to Quit the specific item loading the CPU, from Activity Monitor; as described in the following:
•Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performanace, and increase heat/fan activity:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
However you may have to see if resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) could help resolve whatever the base issue behind such activities; and double-check to see if any user-installed add-ons or startup items are behind the loading problem.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Looking through the ASC discussions, I see a few question comments about a process using excessive CPU cycles, by the name revisiond so if you choose to Quit this within Activitiy Monitor, be sure to look into the root cause of it. Most anything you choose to Quit may return on a restart of the computer at some later time.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Why do we run into stupid basic problems with firefox?

I have jre1.6_u31 installed on a Windows 7 and the brilliant
firefox keep tell me that I've to install the jre_1.6_u29 missing plugin when I try to run an applet...a simple applet!! The plugin doesn't appear on add-ons manager then i use "check your plugins" and the stupid response is: "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Java. Please upgrade to the latest version."
Running an applet is basic! Why are u making new versions when older ones are better? I' m sick of running into this stupid problems with firefox! Everything works on ie, chrome and safari but not on Firefox!
I' m sick of trying to solve firefox basic problems!
We have a site that has one thousand ore more visits per day...and we only have troubles with firefox! What do I tell the costumers? I' m not going to give them solutions difficult and confusing as usually your solutions are! They are common people not developers as me...they just want the things to work! I gave up and the solution that I give to them now is to stop using firefox and uninstall it. And people ask I chrome is becoming the second most used browser...here is your answer...
I' m a developer and I've to develop I don't have the time patiente to trying solving basic firefox problems. If you don't know how to solve the problems then stop developing this and save us the headaches.

Have you updated Java lately? You say you have jre1.6_u31 installed, but "Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U31" is not showing in the Plugins submitted with your question (click "More system details" to the right of your original question post). To enable, Add-ons > Plugins, and enable the item.
If your OS is 64-bit and you have 32-bit browsers (Firefox) and 64-bit browsers installed, then you need to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java.

  • Photoshop CS6 trial runs at 25% CPU constantly

I'm using the trial of Photoshop CS6 extended but shortly after I start working on a document, I get a warning that it is taking up high CPU. When I check the windows task manager I can see that it's running at 25% CPU contstantly. I have a quad core so I'm guessing it maxes out one core? The files I'm working on are tiny 40x40 px icons so I don't see any reason this should be happening. If I can't get this resovled I'll probably just stick with my current version of PS. Any suggestions?

I have problem too in photoshop CS 5.5 and 6. I am checking method from: http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?t=9252&p=37820
    At last, some progress!
After a few experiments, I finally managed to isolate the the problem.
In CS5, the cause was the option "Anti-alias Guides and Paths" under the OpenGL Settings.
CS6 appears to be working in OpenGL Basic Mode with all options disabled.
Not sure why that issue happens only with the wacom drivers installed, but I'm glad it has been resolved (for the record, I have 2x GTX 560 Ti GPU's).

  • Running script chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:3003

    I have a running script, chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:3003
    How do I stop this?

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • MS-6309 and CPU problem

    Hi
I have MS-6309 V2.1 (newest bios) and a regular Intel Celeron 933MHz. Recently I tried to upgrade it to Intel Coppermine 1GHz 256kB cache, but it was doing mathematical errors (random freezing, kernel error, different md5sums of the same file) (in any OS). MEMTEST went OK so I thought the CPU was bad so I tested it in my friend's mainboard and it was OK, so I tested my friend's CPU (the same, only little older release) in my mobo and it was doing the same errors.
So my mobo is bad or it doesn't have proper microcode for my CPU (which may be eventually newer than newest BIOS release) what brings me to point-> How can I update microcode in old AMI BIOS? MMTool and AMIMMDOS works only on newer bioses.
    Sorry for my english

So here's specifications of my old creepy computer:
    Mobo: MS-6309 V2.1 with BIOS v3.6
    RAMs: Apacer 128MB UNB PC133 CL3 + PQI PC-133 MS3828UPS
    CPU: Intel pentium III 1000/256/133/1.7V Q111A368-0941 SL4MF
    PSU: regular 300W
    HD: irrelevant
    RM: CD-ROM 54X read
To Frederik about windows: There never had been one (according to former owner) before I got it and there also has never been windows since I got it.
To Stu: I was looking for some old computer to be used as media-centre and webserver when I got this one for free from my friend. And it was beyond my expectations, cos I was looking for some 500MHz, 64MB RAM (which doesn't have problem playing 1400x1050 xvids and DVD's).
OS: Gentoo, Debian, GeeXbox, Xubuntu, TinyME, Sidux, and others..
Either they run from harddisk or CDROM they freeze or do mistakes in calculations (usually it means crashed program or kernel or programs do what they shouldn't). If you f.e. run md5sum with the same file 10x at least two sums will be different.
CPU temperature doesn't go beyond 40-45°C.
The CPU runs well in other mobos (with the same rams or not) and other 1GHz coppermines runs also wrong in my mobo (with my rams or any other rams). So i think it's either CPU problem or BIOS problem (old microcode or something else).
    sorry for my english

  • HD fan running, Fan temp 97˚F - ?normal

I have a 20.5 imac with fan noise.
Two of the fans run around 1450 rpms.
The hard drive fan runs at 5150 rpms despite the hard drive temp being the lowest of the sensors running 97 F.
The hardware test on the shorter test shows no abnormalities. Resetting the SMU did not change the fan noise.
Any thoughts? This is supposed to be a quite Mac. It is the noisiest by far.
    Lewis

Here are my 27" i7 stats for comparison (temps in Fahrenheit), taken from iStat Pro:
    Optical drive fan: 998 rpm
    Hard drive fan: 1099
    CPU fan: 940
    HD: 103 degrees
    CPU: 92
    Ambient: 65
    GPU Diode: 117
    GPU Heatsink: 113
    Mem Controller: 99
    Optical Drive: 92
    Power Supply 2: 112
Under most conditions, those are typical readings for my machine. When doing video encoding, on the other hand, the CPU has reached 155 F, the power supply goes to 140 or 150, and all three fans spin at >1200 rpm. Things go back to normal pretty quickly, though, once the encoding ends. Yeah, I know I don't have the same machine as you but you asked for some benchmarks...
One more thought: do you have pets or is your computer in a dusty location? You might want to try cleaning all the external air vents, if you haven't already done so.
