Kernel Upgrade on Windows
Hello,
While performing Kernel Upgrade (4.7 Enterprise Edition), I noticed that the in the system the following 2 directories have the same kernel files
G:\usr\sap\B47\SYS\exe\run
G:\usr\sap\B47\SYS\exe\nuc\NtIntel
There can't be 2 kernel directories. So I tried looking for Parameter - DIR_CT_RUN in the START profile.
But I couldn't find DIR_CT_RUN
So, which one of the above 2 directories is the Kernel directory?
And why are there 2 directories having the same kernel files?
Thanks.

Hi,
In one of my R/3 4.7 system, I have got these kernel directories on the CI/DB server :
T:\usr\sap\PLG\SYS\exe\run where the running kernel is found
T:\usr\sap\PLG\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64
T:\usr\sap\PLG\SYS\exe\nuc\NTI386
T:\usr\sap\PLG\SYS\exe\nuc\NtIa64
Why because the central instance server runs on Windows Itanium 64 bit and we have some application servers running on Windows Intel x86 32 bit and some others on Windows Intel x86 64 bit.
At startup, the server (central or app server) copies the main kernel executables from the right architecture to the right running kernel directory.
This is a way to mke sure that all serevers from the same SAP system run the same kerne l patch level for the right architecure.

Olivier

Kernel upgrade on window system 32-bit
Hi team,
I have installed ECC6.0 on my windows32-bit system, now the present kernel level is 75.
I need to do kernel upgrade, i had ABAP+JAVA instance, Can u tell me the procedure or any is it normal we do for ECC5.0 having only ABAP instance.
So please be specific in the replies,
Your replies are very helpful.

Bhaskar.TOn your sytem
1. -> get your DB information form typing R3trans -v or from the
R3 level system status. Note down your DB like Oracle or
MSSQL.
2. -> go to SMP and download the appropriate kernel by going
checking 32-64 bit and unicode and non-unicode.
3. -> go to DataBase independant and download
SAPEXE<version>.SAR
4. -> got to DataBase dependant and download
SAPEXEDB<version>.SAR
5. -> for safer side make a backup copy of your existing kernel
with the date and version info.
6. -> Shutdown your SAP (NOT YOUR OS). if you have
application server bring them down first and then Central
Instance.
7.-> now extract this two new .SAR file into your existing
kernel or to any new folder by typing
SAPCAR -xvf SAPEXE***.SAR and SAPEXEDB***.SAR
8. -> if you have extracted the files at some other location that
copy them to your existing location.
9. -> if you are using linux than it is good to do
cleanipc <instance no> remove command, on windows
it is not required.
10.-> Start your Central Instance. type dpmon to find out the
system status. Once the sytem is up start your
Application server also.
11.-> You can check your new kernel version from OS level by
typing disp+work or from the R3 level by going in to
Syste-> Status..

Hi Gurus,
I have questions regarding kernel upgarade. I have downloaded db dependent and independent .sar files and put it in new folder outside the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc. Now my questions:
1. Is it ok to uncar .sar files in my own directory?
2. After unpacking .sar files, do i need to transfer the files to the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc?
I need your expert opinion on this since this is the first time I do kernel upgrade. If anyone happens to have document on kernel upgrade in Windows, much appreciated.

Solution Manager 4.0- Kernel Upgrade(disp+work stops)
Hi,
While doing Kernel Upgrade for Solution manger 4.0 , the disp+work stops.
I have taken the Packs as per my requisite for Windows server X64 bit - Unicode
The files that were taken are :
SAPEXEDB_102-20001356.SAR
SAPEXE_102-20001354.SAR
The services were stopped, the sap was stopped and the exe backup was taken.
Now after uncar of the SAR files, and while starting the services and SAP, the disp+work stops.
The trace file of disp+work has been shown below:

Dear Experts,
We are having one unique problem , We having one BWP server CI install on AIX + Oracle 9i, and one application server on windows application server(the server resided on diffrnt windows domain) , But now since we have installed these systems . while kernel upgrade we have forgotten to upgrade the kernel level of application server. Hence the kernel got differed.
Now we have ci installed on kernel level 196 and Kernel level of app. server is 22 . and we have tried to upgrade it to 196 but instance is not getting up after copying kernel pacth.
Kindly suggest what to do, I am sending the Devloper trace at the time we have tried to upgrade the kernel level.
Regards
Yogesh

Sun Jul 06 21:54:41 2008Hi,
don't upgrade kernel on windows server.
stop application server.
copy kernel of windows on AIX machine under \sapmnt\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc\NtI386
start application server.
if still fails then do following
delete the old patch number in the message server status area
which previously contained the old patch level:
- Transaction SMLG
- Goto -> System Diagnosis -> Message server status area
- delete old patch level of dialog instance.
restart application server.

"disp+work" process in not getting started after kernel upgradation
Hello Experts,
Good day…..,
I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741, but the “disp+work” process is not getting started after kernel upgrade.
I have posted “dev_W0” log &
“disp+work” command result obtained in CMD prompt of respective server.
Please help me out in this. Thanks all in advance.

For this issue you need to set up SSFS.

I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741
Are you sure kernel 741 is compatible with an EHP 4 system ?

Kernel upgrade having ABAP+JAVA instance
Hi team,
Can you provide the procedure how to kernel upgrade for our windows system having ABAP+JAVA instance releae version 700.
Provide the links, your replies are very helpful.
Regards
BhaskarHi Bhaskar,
You can use JSPM too in this case. Otherwise if you want to do it the old fashioned way:
> Stop SAP, Database, Saprouter, listeners and all the
related services.
> The location of the kernel is /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
> Take a backup of the files in this location and take a
print out of the ls -ltr (This is needed to give the new files the
correct permissions)
> Overwrite all the new files to the kernel location. The
purpose is to retain the old files for which the new version is not
available.
> The permissions of the file need to be changed as they
were before.

Is a reboot necessary after a kernel upgrade? [SOLVED/Answered =)]
Hey folks, longtime arch user (since ~2006), first time registration/post.
Just a dead-simple question: is it necessary for me to reboot my Arch systems after 'pacman -Syu' kernel upgrades? I've always done it out of sheer habit coming from a WIndows Sysadmin world where every darn update needs a reboot.
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by train_wreck (2011-10-22 20:55:46)Wow, thanks y'all for the fast replies. Sounds like my instincts were right .
I have to say I'm blown away by the reliability of this Linux distro. Like I implied, my day job has for years required me to interact with Windows client & server OSes on a daily basis, and the level of random issues/headaches that crop up in that ecosystem is rather astounding. In contrast, I've had as of yet zero problems with my 2 Arch servers. I've had the same essential configs since the first installations of them years ago, and barring a couple reinstalls due to hard drive failures they've been smooth as silk the whole time. Kudos to that. -
Central Instance didn't start after Kernel Upgrade
Hello,
I've made a Kernel Upgrade for a Solution Manager with kernel version: release 7.01, 64-Bit Unicode on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition.
When I wanted the SAP instance, Central Services instance started, but Central Instance didn't.
In the sapstart.log file the following error: "SAPSTART finished successfully on , but at least one process doesn't run correctly:
sapstart.exe=>sapparam (1c): No Profile used."
The file "dev_w0" says the following:
in_ThErrHandle: 1
M ThIErrHandle: new stat of W0 is WP_SHUTDOWN
M ThIErrHandle: I'm during shutdown
M PfStatDisconnect: disconnect statistics

I didn't really know what to do in this case... Could you please give me a hint?
I also want to tell you that the Database Instance (MSSQL server) disappeared from SAP MMC, but I checked in SQL Server Configuration Manager and the processes are running...
Thank you in advance for your help,

Having a problem with a EX2 kernel upgrade.
The current scenario is a central system with:
- Windows 2003 Server 64-bit
- X86_64 Hardware
- 4.6D EXT 32-bit Kernel
- MaxDB 7.6 64-bit
After upgrading to the EX2 kernel, the SAP system will not startup. The dev_w* files show:
ERROR => Get the precompiler version failed : sqlcode=-888 (Could not load libpcr (No registered version (7.5.0) found.))
\[dbslada.c 4234\]

in_thErrHandle: 1
*** ERROR -> tskh_init: db_connect (step 1, th_errno 13, action 3) \[thxxhead.c 8517\]
which appears to be a connection failure to the database.
The following MaxDB client software is installed:
PCR 7300 (7.3.00.60)
PCR 7301 (7.3.01.22)
PCR 7500 (7.5.00.50) 64 BIT
Do I not have the correct MaxDB client software installed? Or do I need to something special since this is a 32-bit kernel combined with 64-bit RDBMS and OS?
Any thoughts?Hi Peter,
good hint. I did it again with CMD.EXE from SYSWOW64 but it does not make
a change unfortunately:

Kernel Upgrade in MSCS cluster
Hi all,
I have to do Kernel Upgrade in MSCS environment.
Please suggest me how to do?
Regards,
shanker CHi Shanker,
Given below is the procedure to perform kernel upgrade in MSCS environment
Activities to be done at OS level
1. Stop all instances and take all the resource offline(including windows cluster service) in cluster administrator.
2. Unpack the archives to a working directory and take backup of usr\sap\<SAPSID>\SYS\exe\uc(nuc)\<Platform>:and replace all old files with the new one.
3. On all MSCS nodes, replace the SAP cluster dlls with those in NTCLUST.SAR
a) Copy ntcluster\saprc.dll %windir%\system32
b) Copy ntcluster\saprcex.dll %windir%\system32
4. On all MSCS nodes, replace the following dlls and exe in the
windir%\SapCluster folder with those in folder \usr\sap\<SAPSID>\SYS\exe\uc(nuc)\<Platform>:
sapevents.dll
sapntchk.exe
sapstartsrv.exe
sapxpg.exe
5. Bring cluster resources online and start the instances.
Hope this answer your question

Hi to all ........
This is about Kernel upgrade ...
We are working SAP4.6C, Oracle 9.2.0.5, Windows 2003 Server. Our Kernel release is 46D with Support Package Level - 1674. I know we are way behind the Latest kernel Level.
Can anyone plzz let me know
1) If i perform Kernel Upgrade in what way it will effect my system?
2)Will it effect the Modules as well i mean reports.Everyday functioning of Fi/CO, HR .SD..so on.
3) which files i need to download to perform the upgrade?
Waiting for ur replies....
RegardsHi Mohammed,
1) If i perform Kernel Upgrade in what way it will effect my system?
Kernel where SAP executables resides. If something goes wrong then you may not be able to start SAP instance.
2)Will it effect the Modules as well i mean reports.Everyday functioning of Fi/CO, HR .SD..so on.
NO. It wont affect any functionality of any fuctional module.
3) which files i need to download to perform the upgrade?
Goto http://service.sap.com/swdc
Select Support Packages and Patches --> Archive --> SAP Application Components --> SAP R/3 --> SAP R/3 4.6C --> Entry by Component
From here you can download required kernel based on your OS and DB. Dont forget to download "Database independent" kernel files.
Hope this will help.
