Keyboard Malfunctions 1 week outside warranty

Greetings:
(First off, I checked out the helpful troubleshooting hints page on Keyboard malfunctions when logging on here. No go.)
Just one week after my eMac's 1-year warranty expired, my keyboard's suddenly lost registering the left-right-down arrow keys, the keypad's 0,1,2,3, Enter and period keys. No drops, no spills. The only remotely possible "cause" is plugging in my Gizmo flash drive into the USB port and getting that "bad power, shutting this USB port down" message, but I've had that before without problems. Still, could've that scrambled some internal keyboard drivers somehow? I dunno. Just fishing!
If the keyboard's corrupted but good -- even after some last ditch surgery, can anyone recommend some (cheap!!) keyboard sources for a replacement?
Thank you all!
James Greenidge

Greetings:
A question to the true Mac techies (or engineers!) please!
What could cause an eMac's original keyboard to just suddenly stop registering a whole bank of keys (left-right-down arrow keys, the keypad's 0,1,2,3, Enter and period keys) without any drops or liquid spills or crumbs ever being involved? Could plugging in an USB device into the keyboard's USB port "the wrong way" cause a minor short-cicuit that would zap the keyboard's control circuitry? Any theory would be conforting. In my world, nothing happens without SOME cause!
Thanks a mint!

  • U150 keyboard malfunction after changing screen, = repeating, few numbers not working

    Hi!
I changed my cracked U150 screen on my own (warranty is passed).  I thought it worked fine on test boot before attaching the bezel.  I aborted the test boot (as the instruction video said to do), and put on the bezel with some difficulty (it's a tight fit on the bottom of the screen around the hinges).
The next boot up failed, which I've never seen before. Got a bit worried, as it wanted me to try recovering to a set point (several weeks prior).  Opted to just turn off and back on, and it seemed to work...EXCEPT now a few keys on the keyboard malfunction.  Esc, `, 5, 6, 0, ) and Delete all type their character and then immediately type an = which repeats.  The actual = button does nothing: types nothing.  In caps, the keys do the same thing, but of course type a + which repeats.  F5 also does it, and I'm not sure about other F keys because I don't want to do some function that will shut down my typing right now!
U15============ 0========= )+===========  When I press any other key, the repeating equals stops, of course...
When I boot up, the computer beeps repeatedly as if a key is repeating in error, so something in startup must use one of those keys and causes the same issue: since I don't actually press any key on bootup, does that indicate it's more of a software problem than a hardware problem?
I've taken off the screen bezel again (a real pain and not a good repeated activity because I typically break one tiny plastic clip each time no matter how careful I am) and no change. I see no keyboard cable anywhere near the screen or cover or hinges-just WLAN cables and the camera. I did not spill anything on the keyboard and it worked totally fine until I replaced the screen. Online info about Lenovo S or Y series seems to show the keyboard cable down low, so again, not near the screen.  The screen website (laptopscreen.com) folks had nothing to say that helped. My search online shows nobody with a similar experience.
There is no Lenovo keyboard driver on the Lenovo site, so I don't see that uninstalling and reinstalling the driver would make a difference: besides, how do I reinstall a keyboard driver if I can't use the keyboard once I've uninstalled it?  Is the mousepad enough to reinstall?
So, I would be ever ever so grateful for any help/ideas. What's my next step: taking out the keyboard to see if the cable loosened, even though I went nowhere near the cable??
    Thanks!!

So it's been a while, but these things can drag out in life...now my brain is starting to adapt to the change, and that's annoying, so I'm back at trying to fix this.
I tried safe mode, and the problem persists.  I tried returning all my startup options to default, and it persists.  I previously had returned to a Restore Point before the problem, and that didn't fix it.
Today I was going to look at the keyboard cable, but getting the top off is proving to be difficult and since I can use the machine as is, even if annoying, I don't want to go there yet.  Besides, there is no reason for this to be a hardware issue:
I aborted a bootup by pressing and holding the power button.
Next bootup failed, and the machine asked me to restore to a previous Restore Point.
I turned off the machine again instead of restoring, and ever since then I've had the keyboard problem.
I tried uninstalling the keyboard and restarting computer so the driver reinstalls, and that didn't fix it.
I plugged in an external keyboard and that worked fine.
I am now wondering about using Linux to get at the problem.
Any ideas?  I totally appreciate how active you are on this forum, and all the folks you've given advice to.  You are making computers work for people: thanks!!

  • HP G72-657CL Notebook PC - Keyboard Malfunction

Hello.  I need an assist please.
HP G72-657CL Notebook PC - Keyboard Malfunction
    Windows 7
    There are no error messages.
My bestfriend (who is the owner of this notebook) reinstalled Windows 7. I do not recall why.  Then she loaned it to me while she is out of town.  Windows 7 began its required updates and some where in that process the keyboard began to malfunction.  By that I mean that the cursor will jump to another location in the field (area/paragraph) that I am typing in and the characters will appear there. Of course, I erase them and click the cursor back where it belongs and continue typing.  It will function correctly until it does it again.  Most times, it will go back to where ever it jumped before.  Sometimes it will seem to leave the field (say I'm commenting on Facebook) and the characters don't appear at all.  (It has jumped or relocated twice since I have been typing this.  I have corrected what appears so that you can read it.  Make that 3 times.)
[I installed and uninstalled Safari because I that that might be the problem.  It wasn't. I let Internet Explorer update to the latest version.  I installed Chrome. That is what I primarily use.  I installed and uninstalled Bing.]
Following instructions, I have deleted the driver and restarted the computer in order to reload the driver to no avail.  I ran the Microsoft Fix-it tool which worked for a brief time the first time.  Subsequent attempts did nothing.
I went to the HP/Support page to get a new driver or the original driver for the keyboard.  Following instructions, all I could find was a driver for the touchpad. So....that not being the problem, I did not download it.
I need to move forward and install MS Office and everything else (including anti-virus/malware software) that belongs on here, however I don't see the point in moving forward when typing is a problem.  (Makes putting in passwords a real pain.)
I don't want to have to re-install Windows 7. (I don't think she left that disc with me anyway.) I don't know where to find the driver and I can't find any other solution or location for the correct original or up-to-date driver.
In case you are wondering, she left it with me because to use to get some work done.  This is not happening very effectively as I am sure you can imagine.
Oh yeah, it works perfectly with an external USB keyboard. Also she is on the phone and says that she wiped it and reinstalled Win 7 to get rid of viruses and junk. Also found out it was a 64-bit that someone made into a 32-bit for her but everything was working just fine.
Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

    Hi MovingForward,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I see you are having a problem where you cursor keeps jumping around when you are typing. The reason you can't find a keyboard is that there no keyboard driver to download it is a generic driver that comes as part of the Windows operating system. Uninstalling and starting the computer is the only way to reinstall the keyboard driver.
If the cursor is jumping around this is most likely going to an issue with your TouchPad not the keyboard. I had similar issues when I first started using a notebook because I kept accidentally touching the TouchPad and experienced the same frustrating issue with the cursor jumping. What I would recommend that you disable the TouchPad and plug in an external mouse and see if you are having the same jumping issue. You can disable the TouchPad but either double tapping in the upper left hand corner of the TouchPad and a light should come on. If your notebook doesn't have that feature then there is section on disabling the Touch Pad in his HP support document Using and Configuring the TouchPad. Please give that a try and let me know how it goes.

  • W500 keyboard malfunction after switching displays

Anytime I use the FN + F7 key combination to switch the monitor displays, the keyboard malfunctions. None of the keys behave correctly; they behave as if I'm holding down the windows key as well, even though it was never touched.
To fix the problem all I have to do is press the windows key once, and the keyboard will behave as normal. However, we have several of these laptops that we loan out to customers, so we were hoping that someone has a better solution than to put a note on each laptop explaining the bug.
    Thanks for the help,
    Matthew

Hi, While this could be a hardware issue, it's always worth trying the following. Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right click the entry 'Standard PS/2 Keyboard' and select Uninstall. When done, shutdown the notebook. Then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

  • My keyboard malfunctions when charging

When I plug in the charger at a friends house, the keyboard responds with lots of extra letters and actions for any 1 button pressed. This doesn't happen with my Ipad charger, only his. Anyone had this issue? Might this affect the Ipad negatively? My friend's USB is indeed Apple, but the wall connector is Bestek. Thanks anyone that has info on this, as I could not seem to find anything about it online. Perhaps I'm using the wrong search query.

I have the same issue with my new ipad3 and I don't know what's wrong with it. I tried using an iphone wall charger and the keyboard issue was gone. I am using the 10W ipad charger (the one included in the ipad box) and the keyboard malfunctions when you try to type while charging. Please help too

  • Hp mini 110 1134CL keyboard malfunction

    Hi
I wonder if anyone can help.
A few weeks ago my HP netbook keyboard started malfunctioning. Initially, there were a few keys that just would not appear when I typed but the problem has escalated and now, on each row, I can only type 2 of the characters, e.g. 5 and 6 on the numbers row, T and Y on the next row, etc.
Is there ANY way to fix this?
    Thanks
    Ann

I saw a proposed solution under another Keyboard-tagged question (there are several of us with this issue), haven't dared try it.
Apparently this is systemic with HP, and you have a particularly bad case of it.  I am on my second keyboard, and having the same problems with the shift keys that I had before, and now suddenly I am intermittently losing the use of the "u."    I hope HP is reading these posts.

  • T60 Keyboard not covered under warranty?

Here is a bit of an annoying Lenovo update. Keyboards are no longer covered under warranty. I have a 3-year warranty, but can’t claim my key-board… What is that about? The letter K shifted and came off – one of the lease used keys. Apparently they just changed this last week, but be a common problem as they had none in stock and it just gets better the good news is that it cost between $150 – 180… the guy could not nail down a price for me… Apple is looking better all the time!

I have already contacted the local Service Center and they are adamant on saying that I need to pay for the replacement of the front glass.
    My question;
    1. I have repeatedly told that my handset has an INTERNAL crack, which has appeared without any fall or impact. I believe that it is a design fault for which I SHOULD NOT be penalized.
    To support my words, I find that similar issues have been reported for the same model across the globe;
    http://conversation.which.co.uk/technology/sony-xperia-z-cracking-phone-screen-replacement-repair-wa...
Mine is not the only case wherein such cracks have developed. In UK, Sony has already confirmed this issue and agreed to replace the faulty units free of cost. Please read the link below and watch the video as well.
    http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/30/bbcs-watchdog-investigates-xperia-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony...
If in UK, this issue has been owned up by Sony company, should the same not be done in India, as ultimately it is Sony and region should not be a bar for taking such decisions especially in case of design flaws.

  • Keyboard Malfunctioning

A couple months ago, I bought a new HP Touchsmart TM2-2151nr. So far it's been great, and the only issue I've had is with the keyboard. At random times, after starting up, certain keys wont work. Usually it's several number keys and the down arrow, but I haven't kept track. As far as I can tell, it's not a driver issue, since I've tried reinstalling several times, but it doesn't work. The only long period of time it's gone without malfunctioning was the past two months, after a fresh Windows 7 install. Then last week, I installed HP Quickweb because I never installed in my last Windows install. I tried uninstalling Quickweb, but the keyboard still having the same problem. Any ideas?

    Hi
    Welcome to the community.
As per your concern keyboard is not functioning properly. I would suggest you to please perform the following steps.
    - My Computer-> Right click-> Manage> Device Manager.
    - Click on the device manager
    - Double click on the keyboard
    - Right click on the standard 101/102-key
    - Click uninstall.
    - Reboot the system keyboard driver will install automatically.
If the issue still persists then it needs a personal assistance of the service technician.
    Regards,

  • Windows Help and Support screen glitch? And keyboard malfunction! Help!

I have 3 problems. At the log in screen of my hp stream notebook 11, I wasn't able to complete my password due to a malfunction in one of the keyboard keys. I shut down the computer and came back later to try again. It worked but when I logged in, the Windows Help and Support screen kept repeatedly popping up even when x'd out. I would let it repeatedly pop up (like a glitch) and I would x it out and it would go away. Also as I was typing in anything (wordpad, internet, search), every other key letters and numbers were acting as shortcuts to different screens such as apps, the log in screen, control panel etc. then the Windows Help and Support screen would pop back up again as a glitch. Please help!

    Hi @aaliyah22
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
You mention three different issues, and I am happy to assist with this. Obviously we need to start with the keyboard. As it is just the one key you describe as  a problem, I would try a cleaning. You could see if some compressed air helps first as some debris may have gotten into it. Also you can look at these two pages and see if anything helps.

    Cleaning your Notebook PC
The other two problems sound a lot like something like a software or possibly a malware related issue, but you can start with trying a system restore to a point before the problem began and see if that helps.Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)

  • Bluetooth Keyboard malfunction

Some of the keys in the bluetooth keyboard are not function normally. The "delete" is used to be function as a backspace key. Now this key can only delete the character in front of the cursor and not function as backspace key anymore. Also the arrow key that move the cursor left and right, up and down is not working. The function go back to normal if I restart the computer or I reconnect it . However, it become malfunction again after a few minutes. I have change the battery but it is still the same.
    Please help

    Problem solved!
I had problems losing the use of my Apple Bluetooth keyboard in combination with the D-Link DBT-120 dongle.
I fixed it by going to System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced > and changed the default Bluetooth-PDA-Sync popup menu from "Modem" to the "RS-232" port.
This fixed the loss of my Apple Bluetooth keyboard during reboots and it also fixed all of the Bluetooth error messages I was getting in the Console > System Log... as well as all of the Bluetooth error messages I was getting during SUM (i.e. Single User Mode... Command-S during startup).

  • Keyboard malfunction - keys link to others

Recently my MBA started having keyboard issues where 1 key links to another. Nothing out of the usual has happened nor have I spilled anything on my macbook. The keys that are linked are F7-F8, 7-8, U-I, J-K, M-,  So they seem to be just beside each other in the same area. Has anyone ran into this problem? I'm very confident that I did not spill any liquid on this and think it may be a hardware malfunction.
Please help with any tips or solutions.

  • HP TM2 Keyboard Malfunctioning

    Hi
I've been with my HP TM2 for about three years now and it's been the light of my life, but a couple of months ago, just one day out of the blue, the keyboard started to do this really wierd thing.
When I type any of the letters in the first row of alphabet other than t and y, the number right above it will type in alongside, and vice versa. AKA if I type Q, it'll type 1q and 1 becomes 1q. R or 4 both type 4r. It just happened overnight.
I wonder if it'll take a keyboard replacement to fix it or am I looking at something more elaborate. It's out of its warranty period so I'm looking at doing this myself or sending it in somewhere.
Thanks for the help in advance.

    Hello AsadJ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the keyboard is acting strangely. You may be able to manually take it apart and repair it yourself. It's really your best option since it is out of warranty. This YouTube video can show you how I would do it: How To Repair Computer Keyboard
Please let me know what happens. Thanks!

  • T430 Keyboard malfunction

    Hi everyone.
I am experiencing a serious problem with my just recently acquired T430 - specifically with its keyboard:
    - It seems like the keyboards circuits / electrical contacts are not very well isolated resp. poorly designed (at least that's my explanation for the problem) - so that pressing a or in my case some specific keys triggers multiple other keys! Mainly the upper part of the keyboard is affected (Tab/Number/F/Hotkey - Rows).
    - Now - I had this problem like after one month using the laptop - I called the support and got replaced the keyboard (great service) but now - like again one month later - it seems like exact the same malfunction occurs again!
I don't think, that I am using and treating my laptop the wrong way... au contraire I am almost too careful handling it.
    So
    - Does anybody else have/had the same problem?
    - Do you think the problem could even be a software malfunction and not based on hardware?
    - What can I - what should I - what would you do?
Any input and help is appreciated!
    Greetings

    Good Afternoon Guenst,
If you have replaced the keyboard and you are still having a problem you may want to send your system in for repair at the depot.
Usually when a problem like yours persists, the problem the system seems to be having does not have an obvious solution.
I recommend calling the support line and having them set you up to send in your system for repair.
The repair depot might be able to better pinpoint and fix your keyboard issue.
