Hello,
I'm a complete rookie with Sun & Solaris, so any help someone could offer would be greatly appreciated!
I have a SunBlade 1500 (SPARC) that I purchased from university surplus. The hard drive was wiped, so I needed to install an OS. I don't have a DVD burner, so I downloaded Solaris Express Text Install, because it was the only OS I could find that would work with SPARC & could be burned to CD. Installation went fine, & the hard drive now boots to the disk. But here is my problem:
At bootup, I am asked to login, and I don't know what to do. During install, I had to make several entries for passwords & such. The "computer name" is solaris, and the "root password" is sunblade1500. I entered Bugs Bunny for "real name", Bugs for "user name", and bugs123 for "user password". I've tried all different combinations of these when prompted for login, but the only ones that seem to work and not give a "login incorrect" message are when I use either "Bugs" or "Bugs Bunny" as login, and "bugs123" as password.
Here is verbatim text of what the screen shows when I try to login with these entries:
solaris console login: Bugs
Password: bugs123
Last login: Wed Aug 17 14:06:41 on console
Oracle Corporation SunOS 5.11 snv_151a November 2010
Bugs@solaris:~$
After the last line (Bugs@solaris:~$), it just sits there with a prompt for me to enter something to go further, and I don't know what to enter. I've tried root, boot, startx and none of those work. What am I doing wrong, please? Thank you VERY much!879952 wrote:

You are logged in as the user bugs* and the system is sitting at a command-line OS prompt.

You pulled the text-only distribution.
It's a full UNIX but you won't have a GUI.
The install files for the GUI are too much to fit on a CD.
I think it may be time for you to go buy some books.
You can also consider crawling Oracle's site for Solaris documentation.
Start here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris/overview/index.html
You can also glance at the documentation for your system.

Solaris 7 Software Installation on x86 System Problem
Experienced error message "disk not found" just prior to Solaris execution of final installation process. This was during Interactive installation. Also recieved "cannot determine boot device name". Could not use set env command in order to set the boot device. It is telling us that there is no boot device set up. Need some information/commands that will enable me to get over this problem and complete the software installation.
This could very well be a simple fix, I just don't have the knowledge bas eto effect it. Please contact at [email protected] or 540 657-6585.
Thanks
KenI hope this can help you. I recently posted the similar question on the development group and got help from 'agood214' which I think is the best answer.
(All credit should be to agood214)
Okay, here's the followup and results for my install method.
1. It worked
2. Partition magic and Boot magic are not needed to make this happen.
3. Partition and boot magic do not recognize the solaris partitions on the second master IDE. In fact they give an error ( #110) and offer to "fix" the dirve which will corrupt the install of Solaris.
4. I had scanned the newsgroups and found a utiliuty called XOSL - Extended Operating System Loader at http://www.xosl.org it works like and absolute charm!
=== Other installation notes - mostly my machine is not on the Hardware Comaptibility List but I figured I'd give it a try. System is a K6-III 450 Mhz ( not on HCL) Iwill XA-100A Plus motherboard ( not on HCL ) Sblive PCI valueboard ( not on HCL ) Siig high speed serial board - PCI (not on HCL) Diamond 56k PCI modem ( not on HCL ) I had to remove the modem and serial card as well as dispable PnP in the BIOS.
Then everything loaded pretty normal.
====
agood214 was using two physical drivers, but I tried on one 13 GB Hard Drive with 4 partitions (Solaris7, Win98, Win2000, data-partition) and working beautifully. In my case, I didn't have to disable anything in the BIOS to get them work. Just read though the manual in XOSL if you want to use this boot-loader and it is very easy to install. NOTE: you can not use 'instant boot' in XOSL to boot with the combination of WIN-OS and Solaris. Besides it, everything is prefect. -

A problem logging in in Solaris Express Developer Edition 05/07
Hi all.
I just upgraded Solaris 10 11/06 to Solaris Express Developer Edition 05/07 on a Sun Ultra 20 M2 and a strange problem arose: after root has logged in in a Gnome session, then when another user tries to log in in Gnome everything slows down: the login screen with "Window manager" takes some 20 secs to go away and then "Panel" sticks there... The only option is killing X with ctrl+alt+backspce. This only happens if root logs in with Gnome, and not in CDE. If root doesn't log in, nothing strange happens ever.
The problem seems unrelated with the user that logs in:
- existing users which could login in Solaris 10 11/06 now have this problem
- new users have this problem too...
Rebooting the machine and never logging in to Gnome with root "solves" the problem.
Has anyone ever had this problem?
Can be a problem relating to upgrading?
Thanks,
Enrico. You should probably direct SXDE queries to the forums at http://opensolaris.org, more chance of a response from the JDS developers there.

Solaris Express, Dev. Edition 2/07 install problem
Im trying to install the solaris express developer edition 2/07 dvd i got in the mail.
Everything goes fine until i have to set up the hard drive for installation. I have two hard drives, 1 SATA (Server 2003), and a 20Gb IDE for this Solaris install.
When i click next to start installing, it drops out with an error against Solaris Software. the error is as follows:
ERROR: Could not create Fdisk partition table.
ERROR: Could not label disks
ERROR: Could not update disks with new configuration
ERROR: System installation failed
Pfinstall failed. Exit stat = java.lang.UNIXProcess@2af0812
sing existing Solaris fdisk partition (c2d1)
Im not a nub to linux but i have never used solaris and its been a few years since i've touched it - but im familiar with console.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. =DYou do not supply more comprehensive info on Your hardware. Therefore I would like to suggest quite conservative approach.
1. First of all it will be helpful to get from SUN's website the "Install check tool". It is an image (bootable CD) of diagnostic soft.
2. Disable in Bios the SATA disk.
3. Boot the computer with "Install_check_tool" CD inserted into the drive. I hope that this diagnostics will be OK.
4. Restart the computer and start Solaris installation. You can perform this step directly after step no. 2. Now Bios will see only IDE disc and installation should proceed OK. If not - supply more info on Your hardware and resulting (in this situation) diagnostics.
Good luck! -
Solaris Express installation experience
Hi folk,
I want to add to my previous post about not getting the graphical installer to work at all due to the notorious
nVidia bug in Xorg.
I have now tried the console install thats supplied as a backup method in Express.
I got through all the sections, installed everything and then got an error that it could not install
the boot blocks, and attempting to boot gives a Bad PBR error.
My first attempt at installing in this manner was to have a drive split between Windows and Solaris, and with this error, I thought.. OK, I'll dedicate the entire drive to Solaris and try installing again.. this i did, but the same error
continued to haunt me.
No matter what I did, it cannot install to the boot block and thus renders Solaris Express useless to me.
system specs:
AMD64 on nForce4 Ultra motherboard
2 Gigs physical DDR400 memory
256MB Legend GeForce 6800GS Video
1x IDE 320GB Seagate Harddrive ( This was to be the Solaris drive, and is first on the list in BIOS )
1x SATA 180GB Hitachi Harddrive ( Windows XP Pro boot drive )
1x SATA 250GB Hitachi Harddrive
If there is any more information that I can give that may help, please dont hesitate to ask.I found some time ago this:

Solaris 10 U4 Installation problems
Good Afternoon.
I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I've been having with Solaris 10. Im currently trying to install Solaris 10 U4 onto a HP Proliant DL320 G5. The problem is Im booting off the 1st installation CD and choosing Solaris Interactve install. Im then prompted to complete the system indentfication which i do. It starts the configuring section and freezes at 1%. The entire system hangs.
Has anyone else had these problems installing Solaris U4 on a DL320?
Kind Regards
AnthonySeems the HP Proliant DL320 G5 is not supported by any verson of Solaris 9 or 10, Had a chat with HP and that seems to be the case.
I will need to purchase another SATA Controller for my Hard drives (something cheap and cheerful) that does support Solaris 10 and install it into the DL320 and hope it installs that way.
Just thought id give anyone that was looking at my post an update
Cheers

Solaris jan 08 installation problem
Hi friends,
I tried to install Solaris jan 08 version on my Dell Inspiron 1501 in external hard disk with help of DVD I got. Initially every thing went well. But it took a lot of time to install .It almost took more than 8-9 hours!!( I think it should be less than 4 hrs right??)
But all in vain!!? After I got GRUB menu When I entered Solaris Express Developer edition option.I got a message related to "License..." and thats it... it stopped right there... and no progress and no checking of devices..
I waited for more than 10 min...no use...
Before that I was able to install Solaris May 07 version successfully on my harddisk with the help of innotek virtual box.But I did not try this version on my external hard disk though.
Can any body have an experience similar to this...??
Thank You
RupeshThis sounds like it could be that the DVD media is bad. It could take such a long time if it has to try to reread data on the DVD. If you try to install again, bring up a console window during the install and see if read errors pop up. You can also check the install logs before you reboot to see that everything installed successfully. The hang you report at boot-up could be due to a failure to properly install due to read errors.
Oh, and also do a visual inspection of the DVD. Any scratches or irregularities?

Problem with installing Solaris Express Community Edition(Virtual Machine)
When I start my virtual machine to install Solaris Express Community Edition(X86 edition), it just displays an character interface
grub>
and there is no other useful information, so I don't know what to do next, does anyone can help?Try seting "-jdkhome xxxxxxxxxx" in the ide.cfg file in your Forte \bin\ directory. Point it to the SDK install directory - that is, make "xxxxxxxxxx" the path to the SDK install.
You seem to be accessing a java.exe that is pointing to a location that is other than where jvm.dll is residing. This may get you to executing the correct java.exe. -
Problem with solaris install/boot
I recently had to use solaris at work and liked it. So thought of getting it on intel box at home to learn it. I have never worked on a unix based OS before. When I installed the OS first time, the desktop would not start up, this was because of network setup. Reinstalled worked. After a week due to some problem i had to reinstall OS, installation went fine and but when i reboot i get this errror.
cannot find mis/krtld
boot error loading interpreter(misc/krtld)
elf32 read error
load error read of "platform/i86pc/kernel/unix failed.
boot path /pci@0,0/pci-ide@1f,1/ide0/cmdk@0,0:a
i have been trying to reinstall with many option like formatting with windows fdisk, linux installer everything as I saw somehwre that disk needs low level format.
I have googled but could not find any reason.
When I try to format disk using windows this is the information gatherd
Partition1 (solarisboot) 12 MB
partition2 unknown 152610
Hardware
pentium4 2.4 GHZ
1Gb DDR memor
Intel Original mother board.
140 Gb hard disk
Installation
install type 3 (tried all options)
entire disk for boot and solaris
accepted almost all parameters.
downloaded again , burned a DVD still same.
Any help will be highly apreciated, as I have been trying out everything I could find, also I really want to learn to use solarisWeird; it wouldn't be so hard installing/running Solaris 10 on your hardware.
If you haven't tried Solaris 11 (Solaris Express) yet, I would suggest you to download the latest Solaris Express bits from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/solaris-express/get.jsp.
Hope the following hints are useful, for a smooth installation:
Choose:
* Solaris Interactive installation in the initial screen.
* Networked in Network Connectivity screen
* Use DHCP
* No to IPv6 & Kerberos, if running Solaris 10 is the only priority
* None to Name Service (assuming the machine is not in corporate network)
* CD/DVD to "Specify Media"
* Default Install to "Select type of install"
* No to "Do you need to override the system's default NFS version 4 domain name?"
Note:
Once the installation from CD1 is complete, system boots up from the hard disk; and it may appear that it is not going to ask for CD2. Just be patient, and wait for it to ask you about CD2.

Can't boot Solaris 10 during installation
I am stuck up with a petty problem while booting Solaris 10 1/06 from the installation CD no.1. The GRUB boot loader appears fine, but when I try to boot the Solaris kernel and module, a message appears
Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory
My x86 computer's configuration is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.83 GHz
RAM 128 MB
HD 80GB
I can't figure out whether the problem is really due to insufficient memory or do I need to install more RAM on my platform. Can someone help me out with this?128mb is plenty of memory. No it isn't plenty of memory. Solaris 10 Update 1 or Solaris Express needs at least
256mb of memory. The initial root ramdisk that is loaded from the CD/DVD
uncompresses to ~ 128mb already, leaving no space for the SunOS kernel on a
system with only 128mb of memory! -
Solaris Express Zone install error with SUNWiiimr and SUNWcnetr
Hi all,
I got these errors when installing a new zone on a Solaris Express 1/08 (5.11) on a x64 box:
Installation of these packages generated errors: SUNWiiimr
Installation of these packages generated warnings: SUNWcnetr
The zone creation log shows:

Installation of -SUNWcnetr- on zone -newzone- partially failed.
-newzone- was configured to be a whole root zone. Are there any ways to solve these installation errors?
Thanks in advance. This problem seems some strange - this time with Solaris 10u4, from 10 containers installed on a brand new X2200 (2x cpu) only one do not output those errors, but just this one cannot install the dsee or proxy. This time the errors were from:
Installation of <SUNWxwplr> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
Installation of <SUNWdtdmr> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
Installation of <SUNWmconr> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
Installation of <SUNWrmwbr> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
Installation of <SUNWlvmr> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
Installation of <SUNWzebrar> on zone <dsee-proxy> partially failed.
So the machine was, too, just installed. After several hours, anoter atempt to install a zone, this time just this one, returned no errors - and the dsee installed without any complains. All configurations were for whole root zones. Used was Solaris 10u4 with the most recent patch cluster applied. -

Solaris 11 - after installation there is no remote desktop avaliable
Hi All,
I have the problem that after installation of Solaris Express on SPARC machine there is no available remote desktop. I am using Xmanager to connect to my server.
It works fine with Solaris 9 and 10.
Do you know what is the problem?
Thanks,
DanielI was installing Solaris Exrepss using JumpStart server running on Solaris 10. Solaris Express installed successfuly.
But there was no XServer running.
So I was enabling some services.
During the enabling services error message appers:
