  • Keynote 3: Transparent Animated GIF Problems

    I've been trying to get an animated GIF with a transparent background to run in Keynote, but it's giving some disastrous results.
    I produce the animation by rendering the frames as PNG (with alpha channel) in MegaPOV 1.2.1. Then I use the convert utility from ImageMagick 6.2.9 to make them into an animated GIF.
    When I drop the animated GIF into Keynote 3.0.2, the first frame shows fine (with transparency and all). But when I animate it, the background goes red (the main color in this particular movie) and some trace of the previous frames stays. It seems like:
    1. Rather than displaying the GIF frame-by-frame, each frame is getting layered onto the previous frames.
    2. Keynote doesn't like the alpha channel for some reason.
    Problem 1 is also present if I open the GIF in Preview (is that supposed to be the correct behavior of an animated GIF?). Problem 2 seems to be Keynote-specific.
    Any suggestions for a work-around on this? The animated GIFs work fine if rendered without the alpha channel, but it'd look so much better with transparency!
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    MegaPOV doesn't have a GIF output option. The choices are PNG, Targa, PPM, and hdr (not familiar with that last one). I don't know if PPM even has alpha-capability.
    So in some way, I have to convert PNG to GIF. The tools I have to do this are ImageMagick and Gimp. I tried them both, then viewed the results using several programs. Results are tabulated below -- (1) means that problem 1 from above was apparent (ie, parts of the previous frames were visible under the current frame); (2) means that problem 2 was visible (ie, the transparent parts took on some background color).
    If I didn't know how to change the default white background in the program, I couldn't tell whether problem (2) occurred, since the movie made with Gimp had a white background in Keynote.
    Using ImageMagick 6.2.9 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari 2.0.4 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview 3.0.9 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox 2.0.0.3 : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote 3.0.2 : (1), (2) -- alpha goes red
    Using Gimp 2.2.11 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote : (1), (2) -- alpha goes white
    I only converted the first few frames using Gimp, since I was doing it by hand.
    All of this makes me wonder whether I'm dreaming the impossible, since problem (1) is universally present. It also makes me pretty sure that problem (2) is Keynote-specific.
    If there are any other tools that will convert/animate GIFs on a modern Mac, I'd love to hear about them. My UNIX-y tools seem to be failing me here. The Mac tools I remember from "back in the day" -- GIFBuilder and GIFConverter -- seem to have been abandoned around the beginning of Mac OS X. GIFBuilder won't even load my files, and GIFConverter still lacks alpha support in PNG.

  • Keynote and Tweetdeck notifications

    I would like a  twitter feed to appear during my keynote presentations. I've tried tweetdeck, but the notifications do not appear in front of the presentation (when in slideshow mode). Is there a way to force the notifications to appear on top? Incidently they do appear on top with powerpoint.
    Cheers

  • How can I share a Keynote show with a large audience using Outlook email?

    I am working with a corporate client with a global employee audience of 7,000. They use Outlook as their email platform. Can I create an animated Keynote show and embed it into an Outlook email? So that the user opens the email note, and is either immediately presented with the animated show, or would click a play button to start the animated Keynote?  Do I have to house the Keynote show on YouTube, or some other server?
    There is no sound, only animation, and the entire show is approximately 75 seconds in length.
    Thank you for any direction.

    Note that any kind of file containing a slide show with multiple photos is going to be quite large, most likely, and thus is not really appropriate for e-mail.  Many servers won't accept attachments beyond a certain size, many people operate with strict mailbox size limits, and so your message may never arrive at its destination.  I'd encourage you to do something else.  For example, I think you can create a movie file - possibly using iMovie, I'm not sure though.  Do that and upload it to YouTube, then send people an e-mail invitation to view it.  If desired, YouTube allows you to set it to be viewable only to those who are invited and not to the general public.

  • Can you automatically downsample images in Keynote without cropping?

    Hello All,
    I am trying to get Keynote to perform what I think is a pretty basic task, but can't figure out how to make it happen.  I am an art teacher and frequently show my students slide shows made from a large database of .jpgs I have amassed.  Most of the .jpgs were scanned at high resolutions - roughly 2500px on the long edge.  They are made at this size to anticipate improvements in projector resolution in the future.  The slideshows I make are at XGA (1024x768) because this is the native resolution of the school's projectors.
    I want to be able to drop large numbers of slides into a slideshow and have Keynote to automatically downsample them to fit on an XGA slide without cropping the image. I currently have "Reduce placed images to fit on slides" checked in the General Preferences.  This does downsample the images, but does so in a way that fills the slide with the image and crops on one dimension depending on the aspect ratio of the image.  So for example, with the two Kertesz images below, the top and bottom is cropped off the first one and the sides off of the second one.  Keynote scales it down so that the image fills the entire slide rather than scaling down so the entire image can fit on the slide.
    FIG 1a
    FIG 2a
    I can then go in and resize the image manually in the metrics tab of the inspector so that the full image is represented in each slide (Fig 1b and 2b below).  I have to type in the dimension that is being cropped (768 in Fig 1, 1024 in Fig 2).  This further downsamples the image fitting the entire image on the slide which is desired.  Doing this for each slide can be burdensome though if I am showing slideshows of 100 or so images.  My question is if there is a way to get the results below automatically.  I would like to drop multiple images into my slideshow and have it be downsampled so that the entire image fits on the slide.  Does anyone know how to make Keynote do this?  Thanks.

    In the layer of interest make sure the vector mask is selected. Then in the Masks panel adjust the feather slider to an amount that looks right.

  • Is there a way to add multiple images at the same time to Keynote 6.0?

    I just brought keynote after searching online about adding multiple images to a presentation all in one go - I couldn't do this on the powerpoint version I was using but there were multiple references on google to being able to do this on keynote. I purchased it and now can't get it to work! Any ideas anyone? Thanks

    Do you mean like dragging in multiple images and having one image go on each slide? If so, you just drag the images into the Slide List on the left instead of onto the slide. From this prior post.

  • Did you know: Photoshop and Keynote

    I never knew this, maybe you have....maybe you have not. So here I go:
    I always converted my Photoshop designs to JPG or PNG by using the export options in Photoshop. Not only did that require more work and time, it also poluted my system with lots of extra files.
    I was working with Keynote and by accident placed a photoshop file instead of the JPG. While I was waiting for the error message, it never showed up. Keynote just handled the Photoshop file and converted it to a PNG by itself. Wow...quitte amazed by this.
    Anyway, thought I had to share this.

    Thanks, Gary and Dick. I didn't know that but by finding this little gem all by myself...It's like being on an adventure and finding a cave full of gold. No longer only a technical feature but an experience I'll never forget.... Yikes, have...to...snap back to real life!

  • Pdf created with Mathematica 9 misses font in Preview and Keynote

    Dear all,
    I have installed a new font called 'Arev Sans' in Regular, Italic and Bold face. It works fine in Keynote and Mathematica and all other programs so far. Now I did an Export of a plot in mathematica and tried to look at the created pdf with Preview. It turns out, that only the Italic and Bold fonts of Arev Sans are shown in the correct way. The Regular face is substituted by another font. Unfortunately this is the same if I try to include the plot in Keynote, which is bad because I want to use the Arev font in my presentation... However, if I open the pdf with Acrobat Readrer the fonts are ok.
    Does anyone have a suggestion what to do? Would be great!

    I did as you suggested and there are no errors after the valdiation with Font Book.
    Yes Regular is listed against Arev.
    Actually, the font works in Keynote and also in Mathematica. The problem occurs just when I do the Export from Mathematica and include the created pdf into Keynote (or likewise open it with Preview). It seems to me that there is an issue with the font coming from Mac Os...

  • Want Keynotes' presenter's display to be NOT in full screen

    Hello,
    I do live music shows on a Single MacBook Pro. Retina Display, Running 10.10.1
    In my show I run Keynote for visuals (always on a secondary large TV via HDMI out) and I run Audio via MainStage from the Logic Suite.
    I want to be able to exit work in MainStage, (switching songs, changing volumes etc.)  WITHOUT interrupting Keynotes Video display or pictures, text, videos etc.
    How can I do this.
    The only way to play a slide show is to play it, and when it plays it automatically turns the presenter's display to full scree, thereby locking me out of access to MainStage, or any other software.
    Any way to play a Keynote slide show NOT in full screen for the presenter's display????
    please help.

    When Keynote is in play, no other applications will be seen as Keynote takes over complete control of the graphics system, if you switch from Keynote to another application, Keynote will be hidden. Keynote has always worked this way.
    We use two Macs to be able to display Keynote and a second  application.

  • Image cutouts in Keynote

    I have come across some interesting Keynote files that contain some slides that I really like. One uses what is called a 'cutout' on top of an image/photo, but it is not part of the master slide, and I am not certain how to recreate a similar effect on my own.
    The slide is a standard slide with a header text box only. Then there is an image, which is actually a screen capture of a dialog box from an application. On top of this is a 'cutout', which appears to be another image file, the same size as the slide (or larger) that has some transparency applied, and a rectangular region within the center of the slide so that a selected area of the dialog is clear and the remainder is greyed-over, simulating a highlighting of that area of the dialog.
    I can copy and paste these two images, but the 'cutout' just appears to be a large black rectangle with a smaller rectangle drawn within it. I have used Canvas and Graphic Converter to attempt to examine it, but cannot determine exactly what it is or how to manipulate this one or create a new one from scratch. I do NOT use PhotoShop, and likely never will -- too expensive and I do not do enough graphics to justify the price or the size of the package on my system.
    I like the effect and would like to use it myself, but do not understand how. I have read several postings here that indicate this can be done, and that shapes in Keynote can even be used as cutouts, but I cannot figure out how to achieve this. Inside Keynote 3 I can apply a cutout to an image, but that simply lets me mask all but a part of the image -- I want to have the cutout cover the image and permit the hole expose a portion of the image but the remainder to only partially obscure the remainder, so that it appears dimmed.
    Using Canvas or GraphicConverter, how do I create the cutout image itself?

    I created a Keynote file similar to the one you describe, perhaps you are referring to this:
    http://www.keynoteuser.com/~newsimages/WWDC_ideas.zip
    The cutout I used is not an image but is a custom shape used to grey out background distractions. If you would like to use this shape, simply copy and paste it into your own presentation. Because this is a shape, you can adjust the fill color, opacity and line thickness to fit your presentation. For a light colored background I recommend a black fill color with 30-40% opacity. For a light colored background use a white fill color. Since the shape is much larger than the slide, you can reposition it to fit over the area you wish to highlight. Changing the height and width of the shape also changes the size of the inner rectangle, allowing you to customize it over your area of interest.
    Creating your own cutout shapes is fairly easy. I created mine with Inkscape, saved as SVG then imported the shape into Keynote with svg2key. Inkscape is a free application, but runs in the X11 environment, which you can install from the Developer Tools on you Tiger installation disc.
    Other cheap alternatives to Photoshop/Illustrator are EasyDraw, Intaglio, OmniGraffle, Stone Create and Lineform.
    Instructions for creating cutout shapes are similar for these apps, but here's how to do it with Canvas X. I am not very familiar with Canvas, so you'll have to bear with me.
    1. Draw a rectangle roughly 1000x1500 pixels in size (larger than your keynote slide).
    2. Draw a second rectangle or oval shape roughly 100x150 pixels in size (1/10 the size of the first).
    3. Center the smaller rectangle over the first
    4. Select both rectangles then choose Effects > Combine... from the menu. Then select "Subtract Front" from the options.
    5. You should now have a cutout shape. Fill this with black.
    At this point you will need to decide how you are going to use the cutout. If you want to use it as a shape in Keynote, save it as a SVG file then use my command-line utility svg2key to move it into Keynote. I was able to do this with Canvas X, but an older version of Canvas may not have SVG export capability.
    If you want to use the cutout as an image, try saving it as a PNG file and preserve the transparency. Theoretically this should work, but for some reason the transparency was lost when I tried this with Canvas. It always works for me in Photoshop. Not sure if it's my ignorance or if this is a bug in Canvas. Anyway I simply cheated by copying the shape from Canvas, launched Preview and selected "New from Clipboard", then saved the file as PNG with alpha. I was able to import this image into Keynote with the alpha transparency intact. In Keynote, adjust the opacity of the cutout to 40% with the inspector tool to give it the grayed out look.

  • Keynote and/or Powerpoint content in Final Cut Pro

    Hope this is not a stupid question but if it is please excuse me, I'm rather new to FCP.
    My colleague wants to produce some webcasts of his business presentations.
    Normally he uses Powerpoint to illustrate his talks.
    Is it possible to somehow take these visuals and incorporate them into the webcasts?
    The idea is to show him speaking and have the graphics appearing in the background and/or alongside him.
    I'm prepared for the idea of shooting him on a green screen to produce a matte.
    (any tutorials on green screen and FCP7 out there ???)
    My main concern though is how I can get from Powerpoint / Keynote to a format that is readable by FCP7.
    Help and suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks

    You're kind of going in an odd little circle. You really need to be looking as producing your webinar, rather than dealing with FCP. There's plenty of ways to incorporate a PP or Keynote presentation into a webinar. That's what most of the webinar sites or software do. They'll also let you incorporate live video streams. Do a live composite (green screen) is something separate. You'd deal with FCP and graphics as a different issue, and only if you were rolling in a precut video stream. And yes, you can export graphics from Keynote, though I don't remember about PP, I've stayed away from it for the past couple of years. But you'd want to make sure those slide pages were setup for your video frame, and generally they're not, at least not to begin with.

  • Play iTunes soundtrack under Keynote with Applescript

    OK, so this isn't a question, more of a solution to a question I was struggling with: how to play multiple songs in the background of a Keynote presentation. What's more, I needed that soundtrack to fade out for certain important slides that had their own audio, but then fade back in (without starting over) when that slide was done.
    I'm creating a standalone presentatoin that will run unattended, looped, during an event. It must be completely automated. It's mostly text slides, which is why I wanted general music underneath. But there are also some slides with videos of their own. I wanted a way to drop the soundtrack at the right time, and then restore the soundtrack afterward.
    My solution is to set up my playlist in iTunes, play it, then run an applescript, and then start the slideshow. The script first sets the iTunes volume to whatever "MAX" volume is in the script. You can edit this to be a MAX volume of 10, 40, 100, etc. The script constantly monitors the slideshow, and when the slideshow gets to any slide with the command "itunesdown" anyhwere in the text of the presenter notes, it triggers an incremental drop of iTunes' volume by 10 units every .1 second until the volume is zero. If you want a slower fade, look for all of the delay values of .1 and make them .2, .3, whatever. It also keeps a lookout for any slide with the text "itunesup" and does exactly the reverse, raising the volume incrementally up to the MAX value.
    I have not explored the possibility of also having the script monitor other text variables to perhaps trigger different playlists. I think that's possible, but for someone else to work out.
    I'm sure there's a more elegant way to code this; I have certain lines of code literally repeated ten times to cover the full range of volume from 0 to 100 and back. I know there's a counter function that could do that in less space. But, again, I'll leave that to y'all.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • How can i move a single keynote cell to desktop?

    Hello - Am using my keynote presentation as a basis for an imovie11 clip and want to modify a few cells in keynote. Have found it much easier to just drag the individual cells to desktop then import them into imovie11. However forgot how to drag them onto desktop. I created a folder and named it, but no cigar.
    I know its simple - just forgot.
                                               Regards- Robert D.

    Robert,
    By "cell" I assume you mean Slide. To make an image of a slide for use in iMovie:
    Share > Export... > Images
    This will make an image of the slide(s) you select for import to iMovie.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem opening a 6.0.1 file on keynote 5.3

    Hey Guys, need your help.
    First about sorry for my english, I'll try to do my best...
    I recently made a downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion because I had some problems.
    The thing is that I created a Keynote presentation with the last version of the program, which is 6.0.1, I saved it on a USB flash drive, and did the downgrade through Time Machine.
    When I tried to open the file it shows me a message that is not possible to open it because it's from a later version.
    The current version that I have is 5.3
    Any Ideas about how can I solve it?
    Does anybody here owns the 6.0.1 version, so I can send to him and he returns it to me on an older version.
    Thank you.

    Using Keynote 6, export the version 6 file as a Keynote 5.3 (iWork 09 file).

  • My Keynote does not work on my MacBook Pro with OsX Mavericks. It opens though, but then is stuck, menu does not react. What to do?

    I have Keynote 6.1 and run it on a MacBookPro with OsX Mavericks. I can start Keynote, but I cant access the menu, it is stuck. What to do?

    Try this repair for Keynote 6.2,  ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:
    1  delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application
    2  restart the Mac;   Apple menu > restart
    3  immediately after the start chime,  press the shift key until you see the Apple symbol.
             let it fully boot up,  it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive
    4  when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive  then First Aid tab and      click  repair disc permissions
    5  when complete, restart the Mac normally
    6  install Keynote from the Mac App Store, it will be updated to the latest verion which is 6.2
    let us know if this helped.
