Keys on Apple keyboard not working

Hi Apple Folks
I don't know why some keys of my iMac keyboard stop working after not using the iMac Mid 2007 for a while.
It is a Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, still looks like brand new. There is no any physical damage to the keyboard, the iMac and the keyboard just left there not in use for two years.
The bad keys are ESC, TAB, CAPS LOCK, DELETE , \, and RETURN of the character keys area, also the 0 on keypad. All the other keys work perfectly as they were.
Per an Apple KB article, i have confirmed these bad keys by using the Keyboard and Character Viewer of OS X.
Any hints to fix the keys please?
Kind regards,
B

OK, do some very basic resets of your system. The first two you may need to do 3x as they don't always work the first time. For instructions click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets
If those do not work then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally.

  • Some keys on my keyboard not working anymore

So i got my macbook i think like a year ago maybe little more and a row of keys in my keyboard stopped working i have apple care extended for 3 years, does this will cover fixing my keyboard?

It will cover the keyboard as long as it is determined that the keyboard failed on it's own, not because of something you may have done, like spilt water on it for example.

  • Apple keyboard not working after installing new monitor

Yesterday I installed a new monitor - HP EliteDisplay E231i - to my Late 2013 Mac Pro.  Previously I had been using super old apple monitors.  My apple keyboard was working great - I had it plugged into the new monitor itself.  I shut down the computer last night. This morning, the Mac Pro won't recognize my keyboard no matter what I do. I tried plugging it into every possible USB port on the tower and on the monitor. Restarted it after moving it each time. I'm currently typing with a Microsoft keyboard, which is working fine.  I tried the keyboard in 2 other laptops (macbook pro) and it works fine.  Is this a bug specific to the monitor??  I've been running Yosemite 10.10.2 since the last update, and I've had no issues till I switched the monitor out and tried to start the computer after shutdown.
Details: Mac Pro (Late 2013), Yosemite 10.10.2, 32 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC, AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB
    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Z and v keys on wired keyboard not working

Been very pleased with the reliability of my 24" iMac to date, with very few (if any) problems worth mentioning till the last few days when the z and v keys on the fullsize aluminium keyboard originally supplied with the iMac no longer work?
Can anyone shed any light on why these keys refuse to work. Is it a case of throw the keyboard away, or is it a software issue?
I've rebuilt the permissions using Disk Utility which did find quite a few errors, but it didn't fix the problem of the missing Z and V buttons on the keyboard.
It may just be simply that the keyboard is worn out, but I'm no journalist and don't drink Coke or eat McDonalds burgers over the keyboard so see no reason why these particular keys have reason to stop working.
And please note, I'm typing this from the smaller wireless keypad which explains why I can still type the Z and V keys!

Thanks for the advice, I dug out my old G3 Mac keyboard, plugged it in, and it worked, so it is the keyboard that is faulty rather than the Mac - can't believe it's only lasted 5 years
Guess that it means a trip over to my local Apple Store to buy another keyboard, and knowing my luck, a few other items whilst I'm in there

  • Apple keyboard not working properly

I have had owned this wireless keyboard for over a year now. It has been working fine up into like 3 days ago when all of a sudden certain keys where not working properly. I disconnected the keyboard and tried pairing but it is not allowing for the pairing to go through. I also tried it on my ipad same keys where not working properly. Nothing was spilt on it. It just stop working right any suggestions

    Gabor-
Try resetting the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will probably need to re-pair Bluetooth with your keyboard and reconnect your WiFi.
If that doesn't help, try resetting the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting doesn't hurt anything, and sometimes corrects mysterious problems.

  • Apple keyboard not working w Iogear KVMP 1644 switch

I have a new Apple keyboard that I am attempting to integrate it into my music setup.  It's an Iogear GSC1644 4-Port Dual View Dual Link DVI KVMP Switch with Audio.  I have a newer (2012) Apple keyboard that I plugged into my setup and it does not work.  It is the same model A1243 as my 2008 Apple keyboard which still works except for 2 keys, the 'Z' and the 'option' keys.  I plug it in and nothing - it's like it is not seen. HOWEVER >>>>  when I plug it indirectly to the computer - no problem.    These Apple keyboards look identical, they are the same model.  I have changed USB cables at every connection - I cannot get it to work.  I powered down the Iogear GCS1644 per directions from their support desk: this included disconnecting every device and unplugging the power supply and leaving it unplugged for at least 10 minutes.  I left it unplugged for over an hour.  Then plugged the 4 computers back in, powered on the unit, and only powered on one computer - it still did not work.  The older Apple keyboard works perfectly - nothing changed.  I am at a loss.
What can this be?  Is there a major difference between the two Apple Keyboards even though they carry the same model number?  And - barring a quick and simple fix - are there any other older Apple Keyboards out there?  If not Apple, are there any other keyboards with a similar small footprint like the Apple that might work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Are you connecting the keyboard to the keyboard-specific USB port on the back of the unit, as opposed to the front port or the hub on the back?
I have a 4-port DVI IOgear KVM. I have never had a problem with the keyboard not being recognized, although booting through the KVM doesn't allow use of the various "boot" keys (option, S, T, etc.). I have to plug a keyboard directly into the computer for that. The other issue I have had is that the front USB port was always somewhat unreliable, and after a year or two just seemed to conk out.
I am using an older Kensington Slim type keyboard that was discontinued several years ago. I haven't tried the Apple keyboard that came with my 2010 Mac Pro, but will try to do so, just to see if there is an issue.
There may very well be some slight difference between the 2008 and the newer keyboards. With luck, someone here will know.
Is your Mac Pro a 2013 model?

  • Keys on the Keyboard not working.

A couple keys on my keyboard are not working. The Y is one of them. Every time I click Y it makes this noise but it doesn't type Y. I know the problem is not with the hardware because I replaced the keyboard with a brand new one and it still is the same. Is there any way to fix this? Thank you very much for your time.
    Take care,
    Andrew

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check what the Speech and Listening keys are; if necessary, change the setting.

  • Volume keys on wireless keyboard not working

I just re-installed Snow Leopard on my iMac (late 2009), and now the volume keys are not working any more. Now the volume down key brings up desktop, volume up brings up several gadgets... I can not upgrade OSx because somehow whenever I do it, it brick the iMac. So I have to figure something out without having to upgrade OSx. Any idea anyone? Thanks.

    Hello yinming,
That should be fixed if you can get your iMac up to date. Try downloading the Combo update and install it that way instead of the traditional way through Software Update. The link below will get you started with downloading the install file and then launch it to update.

  • Numeric Pad on Apple Keyboard not working with 12" PB

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Apple Keyboard and 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 12". When I attempt to use the numeric keypad on the external keyboard, no numbers are printed displayed. Originally I though the keyboard was broken and had Apple replace it. However, the problem still persists. Any help would be amazingly appreciated.

Ya, I have the same issue. The Clear key is reported to be the numlock but it doesn't help.
The Keyboard Layout shows the keys are being depressed.

  • Apple Keyboard not working

HI, I have an iMac from late 2009, when I tried to type in my password it did not register letters. I tried all the usual things, replaced batteries, turned things off and on again but still no luck. I then connected it to my iPad Air 2 and it worked fine, so the keyboard is still functional however i have no clue what else I can do!
Any help would be much appreciate,
    Thanks
    Tom

You may use a wired USB keyboard which could also help troubleshoot the computer.
If there is a hardware reason inside the computer for the failure of Bluetooth, then you
may seek to have it looked into at an Apple Store genius bar (with appointment) so as
to see what may be the cause of this symptomatic failure. And if the iMac is under
warranty, they can refer you to repair; the diagnostic is usually without cost at official
Store. And if no official Apple Store with genius bar is available, an authorized Apple
service provider location or specialist may be able to help resolve issues.
If the keyboard isn't syncing with the iMac, there may be other things to be done, but
a working USB keyboard is first in the line of troubleshooting items to have on hand.
If you have an Apple USB keyboard, that's best. You could use Windows PC keyboard
but some keys are different; these are linked sources to read and understand how to
use a windows keyboard where certain keys have other meaning...

    From microsoft:

There is a reset, usually best done with USB wired keyboard, that may help, the SMC
or system management controller could help items work that aren't doing well. Or if
the problem relates, there is different reset NVRAM that does some other stuff.

  • Key on wireless keyboard not working

I've noticed that if I use Pages or MS Word for Mac, my Apple Wireless Keyboard no longer allows me to use the apostrophe/quotes key.  Very strange.  Initially I thought the keyboard might be faulty, but noticed at the bottom of MS Word there is a "Spelling and Grammar" box which dynamically updates to show progress with an input device (like the keyboard).  I get very clear feedback from this that tapping the key is noted by the computer...yet no apostrophe or quotes show on the page.
Similary, when I tap the key using Pages, the cursor jiggles slightly, but no letter is shown.  More confusing is that when I tap the apostrophe in Safari (as I did in entering the word "I've" at the start of this note) the apostrophe/quotes key works.
Any suggestion on how to fix?  As you can imagine, trying to type a document without these is challenging.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Just found the problem:  have been using the font "Garamond" which, in this incarnation (and bizarrely) doesn't have the apostrophe or quotation mark in it. Changing to another font fixed this.

  • Most keys on wireless keyboard not working.

Hi i need help on my iMac wireless keyboard. it seems that most keys are not respoding, the picture shows the only keys that work. i have no idea what happend to it. can anyone please help me gain back all the keys? right now im only using a cheap usb keyboard ....

    I found the problem.
'Mouse Keys'  was enabled.  On my computer System Preference>View>Accessibility>Mouse & Trackpad.
Took me 21/2 hrs to figure this out.  Should be easier to find these solutions.

  • Keys on wireless keyboard not working

Finally got my wireless keyboard to pair.  However the only keys that work are some of the function keys - nothing else works.
imac with OS X 10.9.1  ---- have zaped PRAM etc - done a hard re-start - changed batteries -- all to to avail.  Took keyboard back to store where it worked fine on their computer.  Can't figure out how to get tech support - apple makes it as difficult as they can to get any support.  Keyboard is brand new.
Incidently the only way I have been able to 'pair' is by going to Bluetooth in preferences rather than 'Keyboard'.  If I try the 'Keyboard' route it cant find the keyboard.  But if I go to 'Bluetooth' in preferences it will show as connected which it obviously is because some of the function keys work - but nothing else.
    Would appreciate any ideas.

  • Apple keyboard not working with iPad

I recently bought an Apple Bluetooth keyboard to use with my iPad and the first day it worked fine but then the next day it wouldn't work at all except to let me put in my pass code, search things on the iPad, and bring the keyboard up and down with the eject key. I know there weren't any restrictions on the apps because I used it without an issue on Notabilty and Chrome along with others before. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting and forgetting the keyboard and pairing again but nothing is working. To test it I paired it with my phone and it worked fine so I have to assume its something specific to the iPad. The keyboard is the latest edition and is the one that is compatible with the iPad. If anyone could help it would be really appreciated!

Have you tried resetting the iPad?
Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • Keys on external keyboard not working

    Hi folks,
I recently purchased a USB keyboard (extended numeric) for my MacBook Pro, and all has been good until this morning, when the V and Y keys (both lower and upper case) have stopped working, i.e. when I try typing with them, nothing appears. With the V key, the Edit button flashes, and nothing happens (that I can notice, anyway) when I try the Y key. (Thankfully my macbook keyboard is all okay.)
I wondered if the keyboard might have shorted, but all other keys are working okay.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, the built in keyboard works perfectly well, both with the external keyboard connected and disconnected. I'm hoping the external one isn't beyond help... it's such a pain to have to replace!
