Keyword sorting

Hi and thanks for taking the time. I just upgraded to iPhoto '11(version 9) from version 7...not sure the year. I have been using keywords a lot and I would export the photo after adding keywords so the keywords would be part of the photo. For the past few years both jpegs and tiff images exported the keywords in the order I added them under the pic in iPhoto 7. However the past few months the tiffs would randomly rearrange the keyword order I had...jpegs exported in the order I wanted the keywords. Now with the new version of iPhoto no matter what order you add the keyword it will sort them alphabetically when your done so nothing I export has the keywords in the order I choose. I've read here people aren't happy with the new way keywords are shown only in the info area but no mention of the change to alphabetical order. Am I missing something or is there a way to order keywords randomly and export them in that order like in iPhoto 7? The order helps when there are multiple people in a pic. I try to get people to pose alphabetically for me but it can be difficult. Thank you.

Hi Terrence. I was re-looking at your reply today. What are you referring to as caption? Are you meaning where it says add a description? I don't actually see the term caption. I used keywords for this originally because I wasn't sure if the description field would be seen in the meta tags as easily as keywords. Seems it does and thats how I will go forward. I wasn't sure what the best way to do it when I started but it seems now from your reply the description box (if thats what you mean by caption) is where I should be putting names in the order they are in on the pic. Thanks again for your time Terrence.

  • Library Filter keyword sort

How do you sort (assending/decending) keywords in Library Filter Default columns?  Lightroom 5.2.  Mine begin with Z; I have seen others that begin with A.

Replace the Keyword column column in the Library Filter Bar Metadata browser with the Date column, click the upper-right corner of the column, and then select Sort: Ascending:
Now change the Date column back to the Keyword column, and it should be sorted in ascending order.
Appears to be a bug or design misfeature that the sort options aren't available in the Keyword column and that the Date options change the ordering of the Keyword column.

  • Can you help with RoboHelp Version 11: WebHelp Index Keyword Sorting?

I'm new to RoboHelp 11, and I am finding it difficult to alphabetize topics listed under my Index Keywords. When I look at the keyword topics in my RoboHelp HTML editor, they are listed in alphabetical order (see the Tools topic in the first image), but when I generate WebHelp the Tools topics are not in the correct order (second image). I believe that the problem pertains to new entries made to a converted RoboHelp Version 6 WebHelp application. Basically, I have been adding content to several old version 6-generated html files in the new RoboHelp HTML editor.
Another issue that's perplexing is the fact that the Move Up and Move Down icons at the top of the Index editor pod, or whatever it's called, are grayed-out (not functioning). I remember with the Version 6 application, they worked fine.
Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to get the index alphabetized? I appreciate your help.

    Hi, pweb248
Just an expansion of what Rick has suggested. Binary index is only used when Microsoft HTML Help "CHM" is your primary layout. So, because WebHelp is your primary layout, Binary should definitely be unchecked. Selecting the Index file (HHK) is fairly standard for WebHelp use and it is sorted numerically and alphabetically by default. The HHK file contains all the Index keywords and their topic associations all tucked into one file, whereas adding Index Keywords using the "Topic" radio button embeds the coded reference right in the topic html file itself.
This online help topic explains a little more about the Sorting options depending on the primary layouts and whether Binary is selected.
Adobe RoboHelp 11 * Edit index keywords
    This is the key paragraph:
    >>Note: The Sort command is unavailable with a binary index. The sort function is enabled only when the primary layout is HTML Help and the Index is set to Index File with no Binary Index. In all other layouts, the index remains sorted but for HTML output, the sorting of the index can be changed. Sorting enables the up and down keys on Index Pod.<<
As you have noticed, your Index Designer view is apparently working as documented. I share your puzzlement about the out-of-sort listing in the WebHelp output shown in your screenshot. I wonder if there is some left-over crud from the ancient RoboHelp 6 code that is not converted properly and gumming up the works? Also curious if you have more than one Index in your project and if you are selecting the right one in the WebHelp Settings > Content dialog. Maybe Rick, Peter or Willam can shed some light on this?

  • Keyword sort option...

It would be VERY helpful if you could have the option of having the keywords in the metadata sorted alphabetically along with an option that they are left alone in the order that you pick them (or manually add and edit them) and not be sorted.  I am not talking about the xml file that contains the keywords (in Bridge) just the keyword field in the metadata itself.
Many stock agencies require that the keywords appear in the keyword field in order of importance with the most important keywords being first.  Currrently we have to dump the keywords and reenter them manually to get them in the right order.
    Fred

Speaking of metadata editing I want to raise my points again.
    - Spellchecker with customizable dictionary for keywords would be very appreciated.
    - Larger keyword input box, resizable along with the metadata editing window.
    - Would like to see shortcuts Ctrl+Ins and Shift+Ins working again.
    - One mouse click - 'Select all' is not very convenient. The old way was better.
    - Drop down list on click at the right side of the title and the description showing previously entered values (CS3 way) in addition to CS4 drop down list when entering data.
Spellchecker is the most wanted though.
    Thank you!

  • LR 3.2 crashes randomly when using keyword sorting

Anyone else have this problem?   When I use the right arrow select to sort using keywords, LR crashes and shuts down.  Any suggestions on what to do to prevent this?

When you use the "right-arrow" keyword filtering, Lightroom actually takes you to "All Photographs" and enables the Library filter with the keyword you have clicked selected in the filter. In other words, it's the Library filter that crashes your Lightroom, not the fact that you click the "right arrow".
I've seen many threads reporting Library Filter crashes:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2986231?tstart=0#2986231
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2954754#2954754
This started in LR 3.0 and was not fixed in LR 3.2. No fixes or workarounds have been found by other users, but the bottom-line seems to be that some images have some corrupt metadata that the Library Filter cannot "swallow". Some users were able to use the filter in certain folders, but never in others (that presumably have pics with "bad" metadata).
Try to enable the Library Filter with filtering by keywords in some of your top-level folders to check if it works in all/some/none.
I would advice all users that can consistently reproduce Library Filter crashes, file bug reports and send their catalogs with a clear description of the problem and steps to reproduce to the Adobe team ([email protected]) for inspection and possibly future fixes.

  • Exclusive keywords sort in Bridge?

Currently, if I select keywords "exterior" and "hawaii", I am shown all the pictures that contain EITHER keyword (inclusive).  Can Bridge be set to show instead ONLY the pictures with BOTH keywords (exclusive)?

  • Sorting by keyword

A strange thing is happening when I sort using keywords: I have my iPhoto "view" set to display film rolls in ascending order. Before I do a keyword sort, everything is in the order it should be - however, once I sort by highlighting a keyword, the rolls are re-arranged in a seemingly random order. Once I reset the keyword panel, the rolls go back to the proper order. Any ideas on why this is happening and how I can fix it? (I don't think this always used to happen.)
    Thanks!

Hi yesterday I ran into the same issue because I inexperience it as annoying I dived in to find out what is happening and did some testing. This problem is only apparent when iPhoto is witched in "Film rolls view" menu -> view -> Film rolls: switched on.
I appearers that when you are importing photos iPhoto remembers the order in which rolls are created. When no keyword is selected, rolls are orded in the way you aticipated, on roll date. The order can be chanced by chancing the date of the film roll.
When a keyword is selected in the keywords list (left bottom in the source list when you press the key shaped button) the rolls are not anymore in date order, but in order you have imported them.
I think this is unexpected behavior of iPhoto, I would call this a minor, but a bit annoying bug, maybe it's just overlooked by the developers and I hope it will be fixed soon. Cause this combine film roll, keyword view is very, very handy, when it is sorted in the proper way, that is by date of film roll.

  • Keywords added but not showing in iPhoto?

I have just started working in iPhoto for the first time since Lion upgrade, and I've got a photo (or group of them--the behavior is the same for single image for groups) selected, info including keywords displayed to the right, move to keywords entry area, start entering a word, and the complete keyword (one I've used before) comes up in the little drop down menu, I click on the dropdown, and then the keyword sort of flashes in the keyword box, and vanishes.  The little arrow by the box is set to show keywords, the view menu shows I've selected to view keywords, but the keywords aren't 'sticking'.
This is in an older library upgraded to this version of iPhoto, then with database rebuilt, and still the problem persists.  Suggestions?  I want to upload these to flickr and it's so much handier to have the keywords done in iPhoto and carry over....

This behavior stopped after a restart of the computer, and I can't reproduce it with my other libraries in a similar state post-upgrade to iPhoto 11, so I will mark this one as solved.

  • Changing keywords

iPhoto '11: I have photos with 2 keywords. I need to invert the order of these keywords. I do it at the info window, deleting the first one and re-entering after the second one (by now being first and only). I can see both keywords in the sequence I want them, however, when I hit "Return" it reverts to the original sequence. I tried to delete one of the keywords, close the photo, open it again to add the second keyword, however it again reverts to the original order. What do I need to do?
I'll be indebted for receiving assistance.
    Don Guillermo

Actually the sorting of the keywords in the Keyword pane is the same as the sorting of photos by keyword, except for the ascending or descending part.
When you sort photos by keyword they are sorted alphabetically by keyword. That's the same they are listed in the Keyword pane.
The only difference you can change the photo/keyword sort from A-Z to Z-A and you can'd do that in the Keyword pane.
So if you have two keywords, "Aardvark" and "Zeolite" and want to sort the photos by keyword you'll get the Aardvark first and Zeolite next. However, if you want Zeolite first you'll need to change the sort order from ascending to descending in the View ➙ Sort menu.

  • Sort Alphabetically, Ascending

I am so sorry to trouble you again. I asked this before and now can't do it again. It involves using the "Sort" on the Button Bar, But I can't seem to activate it. My lists just sit there and I don't get the question box "Ascending? or Descending?"
I am in Appleworks and have two column documents I keep adjusting. Çan you help me one more time on this? Please and thanks for all the help you give.

    Hello
As you wrote about "button", I assumes that you are working with a spreadsheet (there is no Sort button for WP).
There are two Sort buttons, one for ascending sort, one for descending sort. So there is no need to display the "choose ascending/descending" dialog.
This dialog is available if you call Sort thru the menu item:
    Calculate > Sort…
For detailed informations, enter the Help and ask for the keyword "Sorting".

  • Working with scans of old photo collection

I'm trying to use iPhoto 8.0.2 to organize my grandmother's photos, with the end goal of sharing with family on Flickr.
So, an old photo collection which has been scanned.
First, dating. I'd like to be able to order photos chronologically.
I could change the photo dates (losing one link to the original scanned collections (events) which correspond to physical envelopes of actual originals). iPhoto seems to insist upon a month/day/year, and cannot handle anything less than that. Photos that are identified with just a year, or month/year for example. Not to mention the ones that I'll try to estimate a year based upon the apparent ages of the people in them.
Another approach would be to use keywords to tag photos with a year. But then, if I want to use keywords for another reason, I think I lose the ability to sort them in chronological order. Haven't checked out whether one can restrict range in a keyword sort. Or if keywords can be assigned some structure that can be used in the selection/sorting process.
A second concern is keeping the connection clear between the scanned images and the original photos (who has them, where they came from). Hopefully other family might share, so this will grow beyond grandma's photos. Careful editing of event titles should address this. But then I don't think I can create sub-events, right? Is there a way to cluster events together? For example, if my cousin sends me more of grandma's photos, is there a way to associate the new batch with the first set, other than defining an event naming convention?
Thank you for any help you can give on the above questions. I'd especially appreciate thoughts from others working with an 'old' photo collection regarding these issues (dating, keeping the connection between paper & electronic originals), as well as others you've encountered that I haven't thought of yet.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First, dating. I'd like to be able to order photos chronologically.
iPhoto will get the date of the photo from either the Exif data or the File creation date. As these are scanned photos they will have no Exif data,a nd so their dates will be the date they were scanned, regardless of the subject of the photo.
The most simple way to date the pics is to use a Title scheme - 2009 -04 - 13: John’s Wedding, for instance, will give you the year, month or date to search on, plus John and Wedding.
I would not use keywords for dates.
Is there a way to cluster events together? For example, if my cousin sends me more of grandma's photos, is there a way to associate the new batch with the first set, other than defining an event naming convention?
    Don’t use Events, use Albums.
N o you can’t cluster Events, but you can do pretty much anything you want with Albums and Folders.

  • SQL Developer: Right-click format doesn't work right with DATE datatype

    Hi All!
Currently I'm using version SQL Developer Version 3.1.05.
Got a question regarding the 'auto-format' of syntax whenever writing in the code editor.
If you take this snippet of code and drop it into a worksheet, then highlight it, right click the mouse, then select "format" it's like it fails to add the proper spacing when it runs into the DATE datatype. I looked all through the : preferences > database > sql formatter > oracle formatting > edit and couldn't find anything regarding the formatting with date types.
Am I looking in the wrong area?? Is this a known bug? Having trouble searching for this exact issue too. I LOVE the format feature, but I hate having to go to each date type and manually spacing it out to make everything look 'clean'. I'm picky I guess :P I can live with it but figured I'd ask.

    Hello,
I put 3.1.07 as you'd suggested. Seems the problem is still occuring for me... probably a user preference though ;)
Open a new worksheet and drop this in, highlight everything, right-click and choose "format". All the keywords (varchar2, number, etc) should align on themselves making it look nice. I have mine set up to line-break after a comma. (I can't get it to format properly as I type it here onto the forums, so added a bunch of spaces to try to mimic it in this view)
    type TEMP_REC

    BOM_ATTR3 VARCHAR2(30),
    BOM_AMT1 NUMBER,
    BOM_AMT2 NUMBER,
    BAD_COMMENTS VARCHAR2(1000) );
Now, let's add another field in there, but this time a date/timestamp datatype. If you format it like this you will see that the keywords sort of 'reset' their position after it encounters a date/timestamp datatype. The date type doesn't align properly with the others.

  • Tags in Photoshop Elements 13

I just upgraded from Pe V 9 to V13.  I have over 40,000 images and had them in albums and tagged by keywords sorted by people, places, events, misc work etc.  I travel a lot internationally and had the images tagged by countries etc.  In V13 all those tags are missing or I don't know how to add tags to new images or sort by the old ones.  Did this feature get dropped?  It would be very disruptive to say the least if it's gone.
    Help

You should have been given the option to convert your earlier catalog during installation and the tags will be shown under imported keywords.
You can do it manually from the menu:
    File >> Manage Catalogs
Click the convert button, choose your catalog from the list and click convert again.

  • How to "Smart Update" an iPhoto Library Folder

    Hi:
Searched the archives but didn't find a thread which quite addressed this exact scenario (but if there is one, please let me know):
I want to occasionally "Smart Update" the iPhoto Library folder on my wife's iMac, so that it matches the "master" iPhoto Library folder on my PowerMac, since any new pictures we take all get imported onto my machine -- first for editing (in PS Elements) and then organizing (extensive captioning, Keyword sorting, etc.) using iPhoto.
While I can simply copy the 8-9GB folder onto an external drive, then move that drive upstairs, connect it to the other machine, and copy that entire folder over while erasing the earlier version (all for the sake of say 50MB worth of new and/or modified images), it would obviously be much easier if I could just "Smart Update" (to use the SuperDuper! backup app term) the receiving folder so it matched the master one, and did that smart updating over my existing wireless AirPort network.
The iPhoto option of Sharing my master library is unfortunately too slow via the wireless network to be a practical alternative.
I know about the prohibitions against manually mucking around with any iPhoto Library folder via the Finder, but in this case, would a "Smart Updated" iPhoto Library folder function correctly (i.e. the same as the master folder from which it was "cloned"), or would additional "application support" files also have to be copied from the master machine?
I would do a test using my registered copy of SuperDuper!, but unfortunately it's a volumes-only solution. I've always wished that Apple's Finder offered a "Smart Update" option when copying folders to a location where a folder by the same name already exists (in Leopard -- please?), but failing that, what 3rd-party apps (freeware would be nice!) should I try to test out this workflow?
    Thanks,
    John Bertram
    Toronto, Canada

    John:
To add to TD's post, the Feb. issue of MacWorld has a review of several backup applications. I believe it is online at their site. This will work only if your wife does not make any changes, i.e. add new photos, delete photos or add albums, etc.
If you wife uses iPhoto for making slideshows, etc., your only option is to use iPhoto Library Manager to add new rolls to your wife's library like this.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Organizer back up and restore problem in PSE 9

My attempt to restore my PSE9 catalog from one Windows 7 computer to another Windows 7 computer failed. Though the photos and keywords are there, the keywords are under "imported keyword tags" and my catagories and albums are missing. What do I need to do to get my catagories and albums to restore, with the keywords sorted into them the way they were on the original computer?

    KarenZ wrote:
Now I see that when I restored the catalog, it created a "User" folder inside the Catalog folder.
The restored catalog has a 'User' folder just because the original catalog has a 'User / [your name] / Pictures' folder. In the Explorer you only see the 'Pictures' folder which is a shorcut for the above level in Windows explorer. If you have a look at the new restored hierarchy, you'll see that you have duplicated folder names, but not duplicated folders contents. So, there has been no 'User' folder created, only replicated. In the restore process you can choose to keep the original folder tree, which causes the old folder tree to be 'grafted' under the destination folder tree, or not to keep the the same structure, which will simplify and create less subfolders steps, but which will lose your former hierarchy.
If you have a new hierarchy with 'empty' subfolder steps, you can try to move the populated subfolders to a higher level, skipping the empty subfolders, by drag and drop in the left 'Folders' view panel.
