Keyword Weirdness

I finally decided to take the plunge and invest some real time in trying out LR3.3, mostly for its cataloging features.  I've just finished importing about 30,000 images and assigning keywords, and I'm somewhat mystified by weirdness in some of the results.  Here's a list of questions:
When coding pictures of flowers I used the keyword "flower"; when I look at the Keyword List I see this:
where did the sub-keyword "Plant" come from?  I can guarantee I didn't create the keyword "Plant".  Also, why is Plant a sub-keyword of "flower"? Shouldn't it be the other way around?
In the filter panel, I see
I may have entered the keyword sometimes with an uppercase "F" and sometimes lowercase.  Clearly parts of LR are taking them as distinct, but other parts are not, since selecting either one selects the same set of 24 images.
I created a keyword "Family" and a keyword "Abby".  In the keyword list they both appear as top-level non-nested keywords but in the popup suggestions and the filter tab I see "Abby > Family"
Why did this happen? Why isn't this reflected in the Keyword List?
Why does the Keyword List scroll itself back to the top whenever you click on a keyword?
Can someone provide a coherent explanation of why there are so many inconsistencies in keyword handling?
EDIT: After playing with it some more I think I've discovered part of the problem. which is that the suggestion popup is highly inconsistent in whether or not it displays the hierarchy of a keyword.  For example, I have some images tagged "Butterfly".  Apparently there is a predefined hierarchy "Butterfly > Subject" (where ">" indicates the left tag is a subtag of the right tag, which by the way is backwards in the filter panel).  When typing "butterfly", the popup suggestion DOES NOT display the hierarchy, leading you to believe you're creating or using a top-level keyword.  For other keywords it DOES display the hierarchy.  This is clearly a bug, which I will file.
Keywords attached to a specific image - note Butterfly has no hierarchy
Keyword List for Subject:
Keyword List for Places:
Note also that I did not explicitly create the Places or Subject hierarchies.  Somehow, LR3 just decided to do this for me.
EDIT: Now as I work more with it I'm getting even more thorougly  confused by the inconsistencies.  I've been using Photoshop since  version 6, and have over 20 years software development experience, so  I'm not a neophyte.  Can someone explain the following:
Contrast this with the first and second images at the top.  Why in the second image do I see "Plant > Flower" in the Library Filter, but now I'm seeing an actual hierarchy.  This feels like the literal string "Plant > Flower" was defined as a keyword somehow, which would clearly be an error.
Based on my experience in software development I'm used to being able to build a set of mental rules that can be used to predict how software will react to various inputs.  So far, the logic behind the LR keyword UI has totally eluded me.  The manual is no help as it doesn't cover any of these cases.
Can someone please explain what's going on here?

I think I've resolved most of the issues I encountered, and have some possible explanations for the anomalies
I had defined some keywords in Bridge on a few photos.  Maybe LR3 had problems interpreting the keyword definitions it found in XMP files.  I think that's where the "A > B" stuff came from, as that syntax never reappeared after I removed those keywords.
I tried LR3 when it first came out, but found it too buggy to be useful.  When 3.3 was released I installed it (having removed 3.0 months ago) and I THOUGHT I created a new catalog, but something may have persisted from the old install.
I invested a few hours in cleaning things up and removing all hierarchy, and it seems to be behaving OK now.  I've decided to purchase 3.3 since it works much better than 3.0, and I think I've got the keyword issues under control.   Otherwise 3.3 is much improved, and as I learn it I'm starting to really like the way it works.

  • Bug: Keywords behave incorrectly after "Read Metadata from File"

(Happens in LR3.4 RC and probably also in previous versions... but I am not sure if it happened in LR2)
The problem seems tro be somthing like de-sync of database status and what we see on the screen.
    1) Let's say we have a photo with keyword "abc"
    2) Click in the Keyword List on the arrow around the "abc" keyword to show only photos with this keyword (single one), leave the filter on this settings
    2) Save Metadata to File
    3) Edit XMP in an external application, add new keyword "def"
    4) Read Metadate from File
    5) Now what happens is: The photos disappers from the screen as if it lost the "abc" keyword (weird), but if you look at the Keyword List, the "abc" keyword has still 1 photo attached to it. Also, if you release the filter and find the photo, it clearly has the "abc" and "def" keywords in the Keywording panel. And you can search for this keyword in the text filter (works correctly), but if you click on the arrow around the "abc" keyword, the photo is not shown.
    6) If you restart the Lightroom, it will work correctly again.
I have an own application that is able to modify the XMP and the modifications may not be perfect, but in my opinion, this shouldn't happen when reading the metadata. If any developer is reading this, I can supply a file with original and changed metadata for debugging.
It would be great it this could be resolved.
    Thanks!

Please do report your find with the details you state (well done!) here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Weird keyword behaviour in LR3

When I click on a keyword down in my list to apply to an image, the panel jumps up to the top level. This is new to 3.0 and unwelcome as there is often a next keyword down the list I want to apply, so I have to scroll down again.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    John

Have you tried using the scroll wheel on the mouse to navigate the keyword list?

Your Windows 7 appears to be x86 and the memory is 4GB. You may want to switch to Windows 7 x64 and add some more RAM. If you actually have Windows 7 x64, add more RAM.
Also, make sure Lightroom is the only application running so it has the maximum amount of RAM to work in.

  • A Really Weird Keyword Problem

I imported my photos into Lightroom with "Automatically write changes into XMP" checked. I then added a lot of keywords. I ran Bridge to make sure that the keywords were going into the files properly. Everything looked fine except for one folder of about 175 photos. Neither Bridge CS2 nor CS3 see the keywords in that folder. I checked the files in iView and found that the keywords are indeed in the files. I purged Bridge cache, deleted and reimported the folder in Lightroom, and tried various experiments adding removing keywords and metadata, but nothing works to make the keywords visible in Bridge.
I must be overlooking something simple, but for the life of me I can't think of what it might be. Any help figuring this out would be appreciated.

Well, I finally figured it out, but I don't know why it happens. That one folder was a bunch of jpegs that had been processed in Photoshop and output as new files about five years ago. I had the originals I was able to verify that keywording worked fine in them. Other than the adjustments to the images, the files look identical regarding EXIF and other metadata. I guess I'll just file this one under mystery and move on.

  • Weird Keyword thing

I've got some characters showing up in keywords I can't get rid of, example:
freedom, fun > CATEGORIES, harmony, horizontal*, journey, motorcycle > land transportation, motorcycle rider, motorcycling, outdoor, playing, relaxation > CATEGORIES, responsibility > CATEGORIES
This is one set of keywords. Obviously I don't want ">" or "CATEGORIES" in there but every time I try to delete them they pop back in. They also do not show up in the left columns keyword listing.
This could have something to do with the wrong cvkc keyword sets being imported into PhotoMechanic and then when read by LR it pulled in all of the bad keywords with it.
    Thanks for clues.

For me it happened if I had a keyword in multiple hierarchies ie:
    Family Members: George
    Pets: George
I posted a feature request to Adobe that the keywords entry area should just display the keywords themselves and not the hierarchies. The hierarchies should be displayed when the popup is set to keywords and parents.

  • APPLE/DEVS Read this! Windows 7 CAN'T detect the iPhone 5s but iTunes CAN detect it! WEIRD, huh?!..

    just a summary...
i have a iphone 3G which i have been using for a long time and now i got an iphone 5s.. troubleshooting this kind of stuff is not new to me from computers to smartphones.. the internet has a vast majority of information and all you need to do is type in the right "KEYWORD".. i'm that kind of guy that looks for the answer before i try to look on it on my own.. i'm a DIY kind of guy as long as there is an instruction on how to do it..
    now, back to the topic..
so i was trying to copy some of my pictures on my iphone 5s to my PC for backup purposes and to see the quality of the images but the portable device doesn't show up unlike my iphone 3G which is f***ing WEIRD.. been tinkering with this over the past 5 days since i have nothing to do and testing the new features of this phone but to no avail.. searched all over the internet but still none..
so last night, i was really determined since i can't sleep and also connected my iphone 3G to my PC while the iphone 5s is connected.. so here is what shows up on my devices and printers and device manager..
i can totally see the pics on my iphone 3G but not on my iphone 5s.. totally amazing.. good job apple!
the picture under devices shows my iphone 3G and the other 2 on unspecified is my iphone 5s.. the iPhone under there is being used as my source of internet since this is tethered so i can have access and post this in here so that APPLE will know how f***ed up their SOFTWARE is is..
so i downloaded itunes a couple of times, and i can't remember how many already, i think 5 times or more and then uninstalled all apple softwares (itunes, apple application support, apple mobile device support and etc as long as there is apple in it) and then reinstalled itunes but still none..
so i went on device manager removed my iphone 3G and the only one that would show there is the Apple Mobile Device USB driver under USB controllers..
and then i uninstalled the driver, looked for the driver myself by just it doesn't show up in here where you are directed to look for the driver and oh im using 64 bit just so everyone knows and i already found out that my system is using the usbaapl64.sys file in windows>system32>drivers..
so last night i installed, reinstalled itunes and then suddenly my drive D: was gone and i received an error or a "!" on my drive and my drive is not being detected.
Error: windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damage. (code 19).
i unstalled the driver in device manager and then scan hardware changes, updated the driver automatically and manually and it is saying that i have the latest hardware but i can't use my DVD drive with the error on it..
so today i searched for that e-fing error and found this http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/code-19-error.htm
"4. Uninstall Apple iTunes. While that may sound a little drastic, iTunes is the cause of enough Code 19 errors to make it into this troubleshooting.
If removing iTunes works, you might try installing it again from scratch, which doesn't always reintroduce the problem. See How to Properly Reinstall a Software Program for general advice."
so i then uninstalled my itunes, uninstalled my driver and then updated it and "walla!". i can see my DVD drive again. i am using iTunes64Setup v12.0.1.26 just so everyone knows and this setup can detect both my iphones and my iphone 5s is using the latest version which is iOS 8.1.2..
after reinstallation of itunes my DVD drive can be seen and just  noticed how APPLE SOFTWARES are so ****** up.. CAUSING A LOT OF TROUBLE AND DAMAGES..
so going back to the topic..
i was able to find a way (AFTER HOW MANY HOURS of TROUBLESHOOTING) on how my iphone 5s was able to detect the portable device or should i say the images on my iphone 5s where the autoplay pops up and everything..
so i went on device manager, uninstalled apple mobile device USB driver, disconnected my iphone 5s, UNLOCKED my iphone 5s, connected it to my PC, clicked on TRUST this PC, on my PC the sound for a USB being connected sounded, and at the bottom right, automatically installed the drivers and then the autoplay popped up with the matching PORTABLE DEVICES on COMPUTER where i can browse the internal storage and the pictures..
so now i opened iTunes and BOOOM!
iTunes doesn't detect my iphone 5s but i can browse on the images on my phone..
so again i went to device manager, uninstalled the driver for apple iphone under portable devices, scanned for hardware changes, updated the driver manually by selecting drive C: so it would automatically find the correct drive..
so now, my iphone can be detected by itunes but not on my COMPUTER.. see how ****** UP this is?!.. JEEEEEEEEEZ!!
Now i finally found the SOLUTION on how to do this and vice versa.. UNTIL APPLE decides to FIX their SOFTWARE/DRIVER issues..
if you want to scan or browse the images on your iphone 5s on your computer all you need to do is do this:
[for those who don't know how to reach this part, here is a GUIDE on how to open this is: click on the device > click on update driver software > browse my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer]
and then you will see the screen below
click on MTP USB Device and then click on Next, after it finishes installing the drivers, your PC will automatically detect a new portable device but in order for you to access the images you need to go back on your phone, unlock it if it lock automatically and then click on "TRUST" and then you can now see the images..
BUT the problem here is that your iPhone can't be detected on iTunes...
now, if you want to go back to where your phone can be detected on itunes, just follow these steps:
click on apple mobile device USB driver, click on Next and then wait for your computer to finish the installation and then you will hear the beeping sound. check your phone, unlock it, then click on "TRUST", and then go to iTunes and you will now see your iPhone there but not on your PC where you can browse for the images..
SEE HOW THIS DRIVERS are so ****** up.. i wish i hadn't started using this ****** UP OS with all the BUGS and GLITCHES.. JEEEZ! and to think, these DEVICES are not CHEAP compared to Android devices on the market.. it's just because of how these people go with the trend that they purchase these kind of stuff and the only thing they use it for is calling or texting.. i, for once use this not for calling or texting but also for the apps that it has like the games, ebooks and etc when im bored..
i HOPE the Apple DEVS read this and find the solution on the drivers which is so ****** UP and so LAME!!
PS: i hope a lot of people who are having the same issue as what i had find this and help them with their concern even though this is not a permanent solution.. it is just a work around for folks that are looking for answers and solution.
Have a Great Day Folks and it is the start of a New Year and want to contribute something even though i don't usually posts my work around.

  • How Can I Share iPhoto Library/Keywords Among Multiple Users

Hi there! I am having a bit of a dilemma where I am trying how I can have several users access a shared iPhoto library (as well as retain their own personal iPhoto libraries). Basically, I have a handful of (three) users that need to be able to store/search against a common shared photo library - ideally, in iPhoto.
I understand that I can share albums through iPhoto (users are using a mix of iPhoto '08 and '09) on one account as long as iPhoto is running - a serious drawback. When I tried sharing photos via this method I was able to see the shared albums; however the keywords that were defined for those photos were not available. This presents two questions:
    1) Can iPhoto share its library among multiple users (including keywords, etc) so that if a user account (let's call it "media") shares out selected albums that the viewing users (user1 and user2) can search against the keywords in the host library? Or is this not possible with iPhoto?
    2) Is there another way of sharing photos that is more efficient and can be hosted on our private servers? The interface in iPhoto is amazing - and if there was an application that allowed for that same sort of feel/tagging we would be good to go...

Well here is the weird thing. If I was sharing out the library from my computer, I could search for the keywords (and obtain results) as expected. However, if I went to another computer that was viewing my shared library, searching by the same keyword did not return any results.

  • Cant view photos except one at a time??, and other iphoto weirdness, help!

My iphoto is crazy, it does weird stuff all the time. A few months ago it started randomly eating pictures and a grey block would show up where they used to be. Just recently when I open an event i I can only look at the pics one at a time, not like smaller pictures in rows, where you can select them and do stuff with them. I don't know why it is different!!! I would think I could just change something under view and fix it, but nothing seems to help. Please someone help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Just recently when I open an event i I can only look at the pics one at a time, not like smaller pictures in rows,
There's a slider lower right of the iPhoto Window - drag it left.
A few months ago it started randomly eating pictures and a grey block would show up where they used to be.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Weird colour shift on TV through HDMI

    Hi,
I'm using my TV with XBMC to watch videos on my computer more comfortably, but even since I changed my computer the image get those weird shifts where it goes black for about a second, comes back on looking weird, then about 20 seconds later it's one second of black and then back on as normal again. But if I change channel on my TV when it happens, and then switch back to the HDMI channel corresponding to my computer, the image is fixed. I've tried timing this issue, and it seems to appear roughly every 20 minutes, but it can appear twice in 5 minutes, or not at all in 40...
Because an image is worth a hundred words, I took a picture with my phone during one of these colour shifts, here's what it looks like: http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3284/imag0063gc.jpg . As you can see by the xbmc menu looking weird too, this is not the video's fault.
I've also tried switching the cable, but the issue remains. I've been using this setup for a while, but as I said, I changed computer recently, and part of this change was going from a nVidia card to an ATI one, more specifically a radeon HD 7870, and I'm using the official AMD driver (which is kind of required, since the free driver apparently doesn't support sound over HDMI for my card yet).
It's probably worth mentioning that my primary display, which is plugged in VGA, does not have this issue. Also, I have a Windows dual-boot, but I have yet to test if this issue also appears on Windows (which is kind of a pain to do, due to the randomness of my issue...).
I've tried googling this for days and have yet to find anyone reporting the same issue, but seeing how English isn't my native language, I might not have used the right keywords...
Because I guess this is relevant, here is my xorg.conf on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/2eWPKnt2 . This was generated using amdcccle, so it should be legit (though I do miss nvidia-settings, amd got some work to do on their GUI tool). Not sure if this is relevant, but just in case : to launch the computer on my TV, I use this xorg.conf (named xorg.conf.TV in my system), and start X with the following command (through an alias, of course):
    xinit .xinitrcTV -- /usr/bin/X :1 -config xorg.conf.TV
And my .xinitrcTV containing the following:
    setxkbmap fr
    xbmc
    xterm
So here I am, and I don't really have any idea what I could do to fix this problem... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Importing Keywords from other DAM Software (Cumulus)

    Hi,
A client is currently switching from analog to digital photography. She is a professional garden photographer. The switch to digital photography comes along with establishing a raw processing workflow and therefore she is impressed with Lightroom's integration of DAM and raw processing.
Before she was filing her large portfolio of color slides, inside a Cumulus image database, using small scans of her slides for orientation in the database and creating contact sheets for her clients. In the Cumulus database she has established a large hierachical keyword vocabulary, containing flower and plant species, their genus, family, order, class, phylum etc., you probably know what I mean. Some of the keywords have associated synonyms.
The new Lightroom catalog will only contain the new digital images, so that the old images from the Cumulus database will not be migrated into the new Lightroom catalog. Of course the client wants to import the Cumulus keyword hierarchy into the Lightroom catlog.
I have the following questions now:
1.) Is there a *practical* (I do not mean technical) limit to the amount of keywords Lightroom can handle (speed)?
2.) How can we import a keyword vocabulary from an external program into Lightroom? Is there any base format, such as CSV, which we could use? The Cumulus version the client uses does not support XMP, and since XMP only relates to a particular image, that would not help anyway. Where is the keyword vocabulary stored? Has somebody experience with such a migration issue?
3.) I have notice that Lightroom supports synonyms to keywords. However, I have not found any way to use them. My impression was that they were not regarded in keyword or text-based searches. Maybe I overlooked something.
So, I hope anybody has some ideas.
    Kind regards
    Thomas Gülden
    Hof, Germany

    Hi
I try to give you few brief answers.
    1) I have almost 1000 keywords (including synonyms) and I don't have problems. But at least some previous versions of Lightroom were unusable with controlled vocabularity keyword set which contains something like 11000 keywords. I haven't recently heard any comments about large quantity of keywords. So someone with more experience should comment on that.
    2) You can import keyword hierarchy to Lightroom from text file. File should have keywords in tab intented hierarchy, with one keyword in line. If I recollect correctly the file should be in UTF-8 character set (this is important if you have some non ascii characters in keywords). Synonyms are marked with {} and keywords that are not exported with [].
    3) Synonyms are written as keywords when images are exported. As far as I know current search tool does not support synonyms (yes, this is weird).
Hope this helps at least a bit.

  • Weird problem when executing an update statement

Please help me out with this issue. This a very weird problem i'm facing while executing the following update statement.
    update tblo.S_TABLE c
    SET (ACCNT_NAME, ACCNT_LOC)
    =
(select NAME, LOC from S_TABLE1 p
    where p.ROW_ID = c.ACCNT_ID)
    where ROW_ID = 'XXXXX'
The statement executes perfectly fine in "SQL Plus" but when i try from my application or any SQL Tool that uses ODBC, it fails with the following error
<eb1>ORA-00923: FROM keyword not found where expected
    State:S1000,Native:923,Origin:[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]</eb1>
    ODBC Driver Used: 9.2.0.2.0

Yes this could most probably be resolved by upgrading the driver. I'hv tried MS Oracle ODBC driver but that is even more problematic!
The applications works fine in another environment which uses a Merant ODBC driver. Thanks for your time and advice.

  • Acrobat 9: Keywords are duplicated on PDF/A conversion

I got into a weird issue:
During converting a PDF file to PDF/A (e.g. PDF/A-1b) using Preflight > Convert to PDF/A... or File > Export > PDF/A, Acrobat 9 duplicates all keywords (Document Properties > Keywords)if there are more than one.
    Keywords before conversion:
    >keyword1; keyword2
    Keywords after conversion:
    >"keyword1; keyword2"; "keyword1; keyword2"
    Any idea why?

    Not fixed in Acrobat 9.1.2.
Problem was reported and accepted as a bug in October 2008.
Only workaround is to modify the metadata with an external tool, Acrobat's scripting engine cannot do this job…

It's best not to create your own tables in Oracle-supplied schemas, such as SCOTT. Use your own schema for your own tables.

  • Keyword import fails on non-ascii character

I recently tried to import a long set of keywords (about 4000 terms).  i set up the file in excel and then tried to import the records.  I kept getting this message:
only text files encoded with ascii or unicode UTF-8 are supported when importing keywords.
I finally tracked down the problem when i converted the file to a MS word text file, broke it down into parts and eventually found the problem record.  for some reason, the apostrophe in the words "don't know" had been corrupted to a weird character.  after i corrected this, everything worked.
however, this took a long time.   It would have been helpful if  lightroom could have at least pinpointed the line where the import failed or offered to convert non-compliant charaters to some specific character or set of characters.

Yeah, that didn't work so well since SuperDuper ran across repeated errors trying to do so; I suspect it's something to do with the drive. (SuperDuper complains about WD's MyBook, which is what the drive is.) Because SD stops the entire copy operation on single errors, it'd be a painstaking process.
Besides that, I like doing fresh installs of all the bits.

  • Weird - Now you see them, now you don't.

I was organizing and browsing an iPhoto library recently when something really weird happened.
The photos (a handful) of one roll were "open" and visible in the Library (view by Roll, sort by date) and then, all of the sudden, all the images in that roll disappeared. I wasn't even doing anything with them. The thumbnail images of the photos were replaced by some generic-looking placeholder graphic, outlined by a dotted-line-border. When I tried double-clicking on individual photos in this roll, I would get the same placeholder graphic, just larger.
Even weirder was the fact that, while scrolling through the various rolls in the Library, the thumbnails for that roll would occasionally pop into view (where they should be, in their roll's row) for a split-second, only to disappear. That would suggest the photos are "there" somewhere.
Any clues as to what's going on?

This sounds like your database has been corrupted.
Some things to try: Rebuild the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
If that doesn't work Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library Folder allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
