LaCie drive unrecognized after 2007-004 Security Update

Earlier today, I downloaded the Apple Security Update 2007-004, and upon restarting, one of my two LaCie drives became unrecognizable. This is an older 200GB drive, while a newer 250GB LaCie drive still works fine.
I've had a similar problem once before, but was able to go to DiskUtility and repair the permissions, which successfully reset things. This time, DU has the disk listed in the lefthand directory window, but won't let me verify or repair anything.
I have read through lots of other posts about conflicts after the 2007-004, but couldn't find one that involved LaCie drives.
I've tried just about all of the standard fix attempts:
Unplugging everything for 10 minutes...
Changed power plugs...
Changed ports...
DiskUtility and DiskWarrior (the drive is unrecognized to both)...
Updating the ComboUpdater...
Deep-cleaned the caches...
LaCie update...
Nothing has worked.
Any other ideas? I've read some suggestions to try an Archive and Re-install of the OSX, but liked to put that off if necessary.
There is always the chance the drive is bad, but seeing how this happened right after the 2007-004 update which has caused so many other conflicts, I think the problem is not necessarily the drive, but some unknown conflict.
Thanks...
Jerry

this is the right one. sorry.
I had read the link above already, but it's not exactly the same problem....or at least, not exactly the same cause.
The conflicts discussed in that thread came about as a result of the 10.4.9 OS update. My LaCie drives worked fine after that. My conflict was not caused by that, but rather the much more recent 2007-004 Apple Security Update.
In any case, no one in that thread had any definitive solution to offer, anyway.

  • IMac G3 goofy after 2006-004 security update

I originally posted this in the Safari forum and was re-directed here. After the latest security update, Safari acts very strange. Some pages open but most don't. I can only get to this discussion page by way of a link in an earlier email. www.foxnews.com works fine as does ebay.com. When I type in other addresses (including Google.com) I get a message that says "Safari can't open the page. The error was: "bad server response" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011). Report the bug to Apple"...which I did. Several other weird things are happening---When I restart, I get a black rectangle inside the blue background as the system loads. Also my clock re-set to 12/31/69. My trash icon on the dock has disappeared, and 2 different printers refuse to print. The printers actually start and make a noise and even thread the paper through, but no printing is on the paper.
I have repaired permissions, zapped the pram, unplugged and restarted, removed some preferences like com.apple.safari.plist. I don't know what else to try.

    Hello again Barb,
Glad to see you took my suggestion & posted here. Here are my thoughts.
Do you have any logs in the Console like this below ?
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/iT unesHelper malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 13 can't byte swap it)
•Do you have itunes in Account/Start up items if yes use the minus[-] to remove it from Start ups.
•Then go to Application folder/iTunes -> ( actions menu) Show package Contents/Resources/iTunes Helper move this to the desktop.
Next Go to HD->Library->Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
•So, just go to the Receipts folder, open it, go to list mode, find the iTune.pkg files, and put into your trash (but don't empty until you've made sure all this works for you) any iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT the ones mentioned above. You do need the iTunes.pkg files mentioned above, but you do not need the ones in your trash.
(NOTE. DO NOT remove any other files except the iTunes.pkg files mentioned.) None of this will affect your music library or music.
Then do a restart & run permissions repair.
The other issue you do not mention is Norton did you uninstall it ?
Which Norton do you use, you did not repy to that.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2730248&#2730248
Look at macjack's post for the Unistaller.
Backup your files if you have not done so already. If the worse happens at least it will not be a disaster. Any q's please ask.

  • After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file.

After the latest Security Update 2012-001 (Mac OS X 10.6.8) my Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Dreamweaver 8, and InDesign CS programs crash when I try to save a file. HELP!!!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Eclipse IDE won't start anymore after most recent security update

    Hello everybody,
after today's security update the Eclipse IDE won't start anymore on my system, I just receive the following error message:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse.
No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: /Applications/eclipse/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/
    java
    'java' in your current PATH
Java is installed and Eclipse ran smoothly until I upgraded. Other Java programs like Visual Paradigm still work without problems.
Does anybody have an idea what I can do about this? I have already tried repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Best regards,
    Björn
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have narrowed down the problem even more:
Obviously system path variables are not set anymore on my system for UNIX processes that are started in background, whereas starting applications from terminal using the open command ('open Gimp.app' for instance) still works without any problems.
Any ideas where to change this behaviour?

  • Trouble connecting to Airport after installing latest security update

Hi, I have just spent an hour with a level 2 SBC DSL tech and they could not resolve my problem. The problem is this: After installing the latest security update released on March 13 for OS 10.3.9, I can no longer securely connect to my airport. It may have something to do with the keychain because this has happened several times before, most recently after the previous security update about 2 weeks ago. Usually after much playing around, I get a window asking for permission for my new network settings to access the keychain. Once I say yes, all works fine. This time, I am not getting that prompt. Even though I have a full signal showing I am connected to the base, it will not pick up and IP address. Finally, the SBC tech had me disable the wireless key on the desktop pc that is the primary computer on the system and immediately my connections works. If I enable the wireless security key, I lose the connection. As I am completely open to hackers with the wireless security disabled, this is a big problem. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can anybody help me?! Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi, my first post here!
I too experienced this problem this evening, after applying the latest security update to Panther. I had verified that the wireless base station was working correctly and that it's WEP key hadn't become corrupted. There were no error messages after re-starting the Mac, just no IP number via airport.
The keychain utility would hang if any attempt was made to alter the password for WEP, and the airport utility hung too. I used Disc Utility to verify permissions, which found dozens of errors - haven't done any maintenance for months - and fixed them.
On re-starting, Airport was 'OFF' so turned it on, was asked to allow access to keychain, and all is working again.
Thank you to those of you who posted the suggestion about permissions, you certainly saved my evening!

  • Safari slowdown after the latest security update

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.5 (8H14)on an iMac G5, and after the latets security update i have noticed that Safari has slowed down quite a lot as follows:
I launch Safari, and the "home" page's URL, which I have set to "apple.com," takes forever to show on the screen. There is a delay of several seconds (at least 10-15 seconds), before Safari opens the page. This happens with all bookmarks I have in Safari. However, I launch FireFox, and it works as fast as ever.
I have reset Safari, cleared the cache, deleted the icons, etc., but nothing works. I read about a Safari speed fix at another post, but i don't use Airport, just a wired DSL and router, no TCP/IP.

This is weird, but Safari is working fast again. All I did was to quit Safari and use FireFox to post my problems with safari. After using the bookmarks I have in FireFox (the same ones I have in Safari) to check if the problem was also the same with FireFox, then I quit FireFox and launched Safari, and Safari is now working normal.

  • LaCie Hard Drive vanishes after 10.4.9 update...

I've seen this complaint all over the web, but I've seen no helpful solutions from Apple or anyone else. Here's what happened to me.
First off, this is CLEARLY a problem with the latest software update 10.4.9, NOT a problem with my drive, and I'll tell you why in a minute...
After updating my OS to 10.4.9 and restarting the computer, my LaCie 500 gigabyte USB drive's icons vanished from my desktop. I tried ALL of the recommended fixes, including dropping $100.00 on Diskwarrior. Nothing worked.
    Here's the clincher:
I got the bright idea to take my LaCie Drive over to my father-in-law's Mac, which he rarely updates. Sure enough, he had 10.4.8 installed, and my LaCie drive mounted just fine.
As an experiment, I then updated his computer to 10.4.9.
Guess what? The drive disappeared from his computer upon restart!
There is CLEARLY a problem with the 10.4.9 update in reference to external USB hardware at least, if not Firewire as well. I've read at least 50 similar complaints on various forums, and can only assume Apple has realized its error and is working on an update to 10.4.9 at this moment.
I'm going to call Applecare ths afternoon and report the problem. Good luck, all.
    - Brainclaw

    Thanks for replying!
I spoke to Applecare last week; two different people. The first one was a frontline tech support person who claimed to know nothing about these problems. I was then referred to a higher-up person who said he HAD heard about these problems, but was very non-committal about it. I have his number and was told to call back after this Thursday (03-29-07) to check up on it.
With the massive amount of people having the same problem, you'd think a fix would be forthcoming. I recommended to the Mac people at work NOT to run the 10.4.9 updater until Apple gets this resolved, as we rely on our external hard drives rather heavily.
I hope Apple releases a fix soon... more news as I get it.

  • Macbook dies after 2008-005 security update: even hardware test not working

My Macbook no longer boots after installing security update 2008-005. Behaves as if HD is dead, AND as if boots from SuperDrive are broken too.
    Sequence of events:
    1. 10.5.4, Software Update notifies me of update.
    2. I permit it. Immediately requires a reboot.
    3. Go away for several hours.
    4. Upon return, I notice the Leopard outer-space background.
    5. Spinning beachball when I move the mouse.
    6. Go away for several minutes.
    7. Return. No change. Power down computer.
OK ... by now, you may be saying that it might still have been updating and I shouldn't have interrupted it.
But since then, the machine behaves not only like the disk is dead, but I can't even get a hardware test to run from DVD.
    So, to continue.
    8. Start machine again. Apple boot sound. Nothing on screen.
    9. After a while, flashing "folder" icon with question mark.
Since then I've attempted to boot in safe mode, verbose mode, FireWire target disk mode (against a 10.4.x box), boot from original install disk, boot into hardware test mode from original install disk. None of these things worked. I've reset the PRAM.
The only diagnostic activity of all of these that has produced any different feedback is the PRAM reset (which sounded the Apple boot sound a second time). Everything else does not work. If the HD was dead, I could understand that none of the attempts to boot into FireWire target disk mode, or to boot from DVD and then expect to see the HD mount in some way, would work. But since it doesn't even boot the hardware test from the DVD, I'm really baffled. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well, my solution was to buy DiskWarrior and copy what I could (which was a lot, thankfully) to a FireWire external disk, then reinstall. DiskWarrior reports S.M.A.R.T. status OK, so I've gone with a fresh partition in Disk Utility and successfully installed 10.4 from the original DVDs.
Have also run Apple Hardware Test and had no problems, so I've decided to trust the drive in the short term.
Unfortunately, now, 10.5 upgrade disks won't finish and guess what ... a partial install of 10.5 breaks the 10.4! So, the machine has a recognizable startup disk but justs sits in a loop rebooting itself, presumably as it hits some inter-10.4/10.5 state and gives up.
Next up I tried to restore my 10.5 from a wired ethernet connection to my Time Capsule. Having never once been able to browse my backups in Time Machine under 10.5, I was somewhat surprised to find that the 10.5 Installer was happy to let me try a restore from the Time Capsule. It crunched away until it was happy that I had enough space on my new partition, and then did what seemed a pretty instantaneous restore. The Macbook reboots and ... can't see the startup disk.
Maybe my disk really is on the way out.

  • Mac Mini Won't Boot after 2008 008 Security Update

I have 2 mac mini's both identical systems - ran the security update at home - rebooted and noticed the movements of the mouse and the mail application was 1/2 to a second slow/behind - decided to restart - it took 3 restarts and it finally came back and then locked up

  • After 10.6 security update 2013-002 PGP encrypted disk won't boot

I ran the latest security update on my very old 17" intel MacBook Pro (It won't boot, so I can't give you the model number). It has PGP encryption installed on it, but I only have my passphrase, not the keys since it's a managed system.  Half way through the install, it failed with a cryptic error, and the machine won't boot now. It gets half way through booting, and the screen goes black.
I have booted into single user mode, and ran fsck and applejack, only to get an error about a sibling error, and the hard disk is full.
Is this a PGP issue? Does the latest security update conflict with PGP?
I found this resolution to a similar sounding problem in 2010, but am unsure if this is happening now. Google searching hasn't yeilded anything so far.
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20101111120329585
    Thanks for any help.
    Melissa

About PGP I can't tell; the hint you linked (and the suggested fix) might still be valid:
PGP recommends folks to decrypt their drives first, update to 10.6.5 and then re-encrypt.
this sounds as a general recommendation.
However fsck reported a sibling error (an invalid link sibling error I presume) and that's not fine. Afaik, Disk Utility can't fix it; DiskWarrior hopefully will. I quote from Alsoft Support Database:
    Question
Is DiskWarrior capable of repairing an "Invalid Sibling Link" error?
    Answer
This is an error you definitely don't want. It indicates that parts of your directory, and therefore some of your files and folders, are inaccessible.
Mac OS Standard (HFS) and Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) disk directories have a very complex structure. Each file or folder (item) on a disk has an entry in the disk's directory. These entries are in order of enclosing folder and then item name. This is similar to a yellow pages directory being ordered by type of business and then business name. Just like a yellow pages directory, the disk directory has pages except that its pages are called nodes. Unlike the yellow pages, nodes are dynamic and change as you add and delete items. It's sort of like a realtime yellow pages.
Imagine that the pages of the yellow pages are not in order and at the bottom of each page it says "Continued on page n," where n is the page that contains the next set of listings for the particular type of business that you're looking up. Well nodes are not arranged in order and each node has a reference, or link, to the next node that contains the next set of ordered items. This link is what is referred to as the sibling link.
A sibling link error is a bad link to another node. Either the link refers to the wrong node or it refers to an invalid node. As I said, a sibling link error makes some of your items inaccessible and can even prevent a disk from mounting. Sibling errors are notoriously difficult for some of the patching type of disk repair utilities to repair. Sometimes the repairs fail and the directory is damaged further. If a disk with a sibling link error is still mountable, I would advise backing up the accessible files and folders on the disk before attempting to repair it with that type of disk repair utility.
I'm not really sure DiskWarrior will work on a PGP encrypted disk. According to a few old Google matches, it should. See e.g.:
    http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=4263350
but according to more recent ones, it won't:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2719460?start=0&tstart=0
It seems you're out of luck even with Safe Boot (from PGP Whole Disk Encryption Command Line User's Guide):
The Mac OS X Safe Boot feature does not work on a boot disk that has been whole disk encrypted; if you hold down the Shift key to enter Safe Boot, the system will fail to boot after authenticating at the PGP BootGuard screen.
So, while you're waiting for some more knowledgeable advice, you might backup your data to an external drive while booted in single user mode. There are many how-tos out there; I think this one is pretty clear:
    http://jsalovaara.com/blog/backing-up-files-to-a-usb-drive-using-single-user-mod e.html
    Hope this helps.

  • Clicking noise after downloading the security update...

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else's MacBook has a clicking noise after they did the system update for the security, sounds like it is coming from the top right hand corner.
If anyone knows what might be causing this problem, do let me know.
    Thanks,
    Sam

Could the noise be coming from the hard drive (lower right corner?)
And, is the 'click' the same sound that the HDD makes once, normally, just before the whole computer turns off during shut down or sleep?
My clicking HDD began right after downloading the last Security Update (the one released in May), but I concluded that was just a coincidence. Nevertheless, when I installed yesterday's security update I couldn't help but secretly hope it might stop the clicks. No such luck... I still doubt it has anything to do wuth it. Just thought I'd ask...

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System Disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

This problem affects even applications as Word, Excel and Powerpoint... I think the problem has reached it's highest levels and I would like to know what can I do in order to reverse my iMac to a "normal" life... I should say that I haven't had any problems with any of the several Web Browsers I commonly use...
