Laptop no longer recognizing songs in external hard drive. Only ones in internal hd. Says file cannot be found and exclamation pt. to left of song.
My laptop no longer recognizes my songs in the external hard drive. It still plays the ones stored on my internal hd fine. It's just started doing this.
The song's names still appear in the music library, but when I try to play the song, anexclamation pt. comes up to the left of the title, and it says the file cannot be located.
OS is Windows 7 Home Premium

When I tried my suggestion, I had around 3 three separate folders on my computer which had music in them. The music in these folders was dragged and dropped into iTunes when I was adding it onto my iPhone.
I had foolishly moved some of the music from the other folders and into the music/iTunes folder iTunes then showed the exclamation mark beside these tracks and showed the not found or words to that affect window/popup. I then placed the folders (that contain the music) back to their location which there were at when I originally dragged and dropped them into iTunes, after this the exclamation mark and the not found window naturally did not appear anymore.
I then done the following:
iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
A message will pop up.
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
After I had done this, all the folders that contained the music that were in the 3 separate folders, were then placed in one folder, which in my case was,
C:\Users\MY USERNAME\Music\iTunes\My iPhone\iTunes Media\Music
Sometimes (depending on the device) it can be (your username)/music/iTunes/iTunes music

After updating to Mavericks, my laptop no longer can mount my external hard drive. What on earth is going on here and how can I fix this?
The drive is spinning and I was using it the night before I updated my macbook. It is viewable in disk utility but not in finder, and attempts to mount it are thwarted. The problem is literally coincident with updating the mavericks. When I click verify it didn't appear to have any problems but I will retry when I am back at home and report the findings.
It is a Toshiba 1GB external hard drive and has adequate power. Lights are on, etc.
I have not checked on another computer as do not have one available, but that will be my next step. -

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?
If this hard drive is part of a NAS device, then yes it should be accessable from either a Mac or PC while connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet.

External Hard Drive - Only one partition is recognized
I have a 1TB GDrive, NTFS formatted, that has been divided into three partitions. When I connect the drive to my Mac Pro, only one partition is recognized. I have tried downloading Tuxera, rebooting the system, and connecting with different cables. Disc Utility only sees the one partition. I have also tried connecting the drive to another Mac with the same results. While this is not a new drive, it has been used for editing on a PC system, this is the first time it has been connected to a Mac. However, this is the first time that my Mac system has had difficulty reading a partitioned PC formatted drive. And when the drive is connected to a PC, all partitions are recognized and all are read as being healthy.
Any ideas on how to solve this issue would be appreciated!Mac OS only recently added the ability to resize partitions. With Windows there are so many options, tools, and types of partitions; including extended volumes, non-destructive ability to add a drive to and create mirror and stripe RAID.
If you don't have Windows and don't have MacFuse +3G or Paragon NTFS driver... but at least Windows will let you see, or burn one of the Linux type boot CDs to troubleshoot or more. -

most comments which I know say, the best would be to copy all your photos into a directory (with corresponding subdirectories) by help of a file manager. From there LR should find all your photos.

Me compre un ipod classic de 160gb cada vez que trato de ponerle musica de mi disco duro externo solo copia hasta 1500 canciones y luego me congela el Itune y no lo puedo cerrar, me pide que restaure el ipod como de fabrica, lo hago y nada. Trato de cerrar el programa de itune y no me deja, trato de apagar el computador y no lo puedo apagar, he buscado para ver si tiene errores el disco del Ipod y me dice que esta bien. He aplastado Menu y Seleccion para entrar al sistemade diagnostic o del ipod y le pongo el test manual donde entro al IO y me dice q todo esta bien. Le he dado ya varios Format directamente desde el Windows 7 y nada tampoco, siempre me borra todo desde que pasan mas de 1300 canciones y me congeal todo el equipo. Ya no se que pensar de esta compania Apple porque no da ninguna solucion ha este tema.

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -

NatI was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there. Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?

That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

Streaming songs from external hard drive to Mac.
Is there an external hard drive that I could use to store all my music onto and then stream to my iTunes on my Mac? I don't want to have to keep all my music on my Mac taking up my hard drive as I have a lot of songs. Just wondering if there's anyway to stream it over wireless to my iTunes instead?
You can't add playable songs to an iPod except through iTunes. Dragging songs from Finder to the iPod simply adds the audio files as it would to an ordinary flash drive, it'll store them but not play them.

I've tried looking the answer up on google, but I've come up empty handed. Do I need to change permissions somewhere? I've tried setting everyone to have read and write acess on both machines and that didn't work either.
My macbook that works perfectly with the hard drive is running snow leopard. the other macbook is running leopard. i'm not 100% certain what brand my external is but it says firewire800/usb2.0 on it.

I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad? I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive. One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line. Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory. Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive? Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad? Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips. Internet and WiFi are not available. Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad). I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC. I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips. Is this possible and how would I do it? I'd appreciate any guidance.
No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.
