Laptop only coming up with a blank screen after set-up?

Ok, so. My parents bought me a brand new hp laptop for christmas. On christmas day i went through the whole set-up process and did all the steps it told me to do. When i'd been through all the steps, i got a loading symbol and ever since, all it comes up with is a blank, black screen and a mouse icon that i can move. I'm not 100% sure of the model though (appologies). What do i need to do??
Cheers

Is the power on the computer on? Is there an error message on the screen? I would be happy to help you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number. In addition, it will also help if you indicate which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?

    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.

    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • TS1702 I am having trouble with iBooks it is coming up with a blank screen, I tuned ogg my iPad but did not make any difference I then uninstalled iBooks and an trying to install it over wifii but it does not seem to be loading even after an hour  any sug

I am having difficulties with iBook it went blank! I uninstalled it am now waiting for it to reload over wifi any suggestions how long this takes? I am on holiday and don't have computer access I have been waiting an hour any suggestions please

I agree. I don't rely on iCloud as a backup, that is what I have my portable hard drive for. Its 500 GB so I can hold my entire iTunes library several times over on it. I have all my movies on my hard drive, but somehow "The Mist" got deleted off of my hard drive, so I figured "Well, the option to redownload an already purchased movie is available through iCloud, I'll just do that!"
And permissions and download availability have nothing to do with it, the movie's still there, it still allows me to redownload it. The only problem is when I click download, I get that message.
And nobody else uses my computer, but I do have multiple accounts authorized on it. Even still though, I am attepmpting to download it through the account I purchased it under. :/

my ipod touch 2nd generation 32gb only coming up with white screen. i could hear the click that we hear when the ipod or iphone makes when it get started. then the white screen goes off.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Satellite P200 keeps locking up with a blank screen

I have P200D-127 which keeps locking up with a blank screen quite regularly - its only 3 weeks old!
Loathed to take it back to staples as its taken so long to get going again after previous laptop died.
    Anyone experienced this too?

I also (coincidence?) bought a p200 Toshiba from Staples in October this year, and also have exactly the same problem.
To answer the question above, there is no pattern to when the screen goes blank and lock up - it happens randomly whether I am using the machine or not.
I too am loathe to return it, as I've read that they will just take your machine away and you lose the computer for a long time, when I need it for my work.
I am not a computer expert, so it is difficult to describe the problem much more than this, but of course it is extremely problematic if you are in the middle of important work when the machine locks up.
I've read about updating BIOS, but many forums have said that this didn't solve this problem!
My other thought is that I need to take off VISTA as it seems this is the route of the problem - never had this with any machine before VISTA...grrrr.
Anybody actually know how to solve this? I find it a bit ridiculous to spend a large chunk of money updating my laptop to find it virtually unusable!

  • T430 own't boot. 4 short beeps with a blank screen.

    hi guys,
I got a very weired problem that my machine keeps beeping and accompanied with a blank screen. However, all BIOS hardware tests have passed and it just own't boot with any device CD, Hard Driver  or a bootable USB HDD...
then I found this on official support weisbte:  Four cycles of four short beeps and a blank screen - System board (Security chip)
Does this mean a motherboard replacement is the only way to address mt problem? if so, unfortunately, my warranty has just expired two month ago...so I just want to know is there a way to address this to save me some $$...
Any advices would be highly appreciated.

I connected an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't open any programs. It Just sits there with a blank screen.  How do I get it to open programs and act like a monitor?

    Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display
Let me know if this helps at all!

The application maps is not working. When I try to run it opens for a few seconds with a blank screen and then closes.

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • 7961G-GE stuck in constant reboot with a blank screen

    Hi all,
I just bought a used 7961G-GE and attempted to implement it into my current running CME environment. For some reason my 7961G-GE is constantly rebooting with a blank screen upon receiving power from my 3550 switch. I currently have 2 7940's and a 7961G that have registered without any issues. I tried to debug tftp event's on my router to see if at least my 7961G-GE  was able to contact the TFTP server but I get no results at all. I also did  a dhcp bindings check and it looks like the 7961G-GE phone is unable to get an ip address either. I have the proper option 150 configurations as my other phones are able to reach the tftp server without any issues. I've also uploaded and tried firmware versions 8.2 through 8.5 and assigned the proper file to the load command. When I do a "more system:/its/vrf1/XMLDefault.cnf.xml" to see if the command was executed, it shows the correct file within the open and close tags of the proper load information tags. This is just really baffling to me because I'm getting no response at all when I try to debug the events with this phone with the exeception of it rebooting every few seconds with a blank screen. I do get an error message when I do the load command that says "
LOAD COMMAND ERROR:cnf-file location system is not supported,Plese use flash|slot0|tftpUpdating CNF files", but again, when I look at the XML files that all my phones request they all show the proper info within their tags including 7961G-GE.
Any pointer's as to why this is happening?
    Thanks
    -Jason

Maybe the unit was in the middle of a complete flash reset when the seller pulled the power.  Normally a flash reset takes about, wait for it, an hour.

  • Hey my macbook white unibody is coming up with a dark screen that is telling me to restart, how do i get rid of it?

I actually have a couple questions.
I bought a used Macbook 2009 unibody that still has snow leopard. It recently has been coming up with a darkened screen telling me to restart.
My first question is how do i get rid of that? Next i don't no the computer password (luckily its not required to get on the computer or applications) is there a way to change it? Can i wipe the hard drive, its full of personal files? lastly if i download mountain lion, will it wipe the hard drive or get rid of microsoft office?
              - Adam

You need to contact the vendor to obtain the password as well as the original install disk. There is little you can do without it.

    Hi rthomas63,
I saw your post about the blue screen of death (BSOD) that you are getting. I will be happy to assist but I will need more information then what you provided. What operating system are you running? What is your product number? What is the error that you are getting with the blue screen? When are you getting the error message? Do you get it at start up or when you are using a certain program. The more information you can post about the error message that better.

You can get there from here (booting normally); it just may take you a few steps to do it.
If the disk is almost full and the system won't boot then sometimes it will boot in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Empty the trash after it boots.
Then for hints on how to free disk/SSD storage see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5872318?tstart=0
If the Safe Mode boot does not do the trick then you can install OS X on an external hard disk, boot from that, and then delete files.  You can also reach the disk via Target Mode.  A third option is to take it to an Apple store where they can do a network boot and help you remove some files.
