Laptop shuts down without any warning

My laptop is shutting down without any warning. It has done so twice. When I run the preboot diagnostic, everything is fine. When I run Dell Support Assist app, this is the error message that I got from the System History:

Hi ,
Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.I am Jennifer and I work for the Dell Social Media Team .
To assist me to resolve this issue I would suggest you to try these steps and advise the result ,
*)Is this issue seen with all applications and any particular applications.
*)When the system crashed did you experience any over heating issue.
*)May I know the operating system installed on the system .
*)Would suggest you to work on this system in safe mode with networking then test if the same issue is seen .
*)Also as you mentioned that with the preboot diagnostic the system passed all the test so  the system's hardware is working fine.
If there are any more queries do reply to this post with the system model ,operating system installed on the machine, service tag of the system(sent via private message) so that I can look into the details of the system and assist you better .
Awaiting a reply from you .

  • Macbook Shuts downs without any warning.

    Hi All,
    Recently I have noticed that my Macbook shuts down without any warning when the battery is out of power. Previously i used to get a warning when about 9-10 mins of power was left.
    I have all the updates installed. Also I have not installed any new hardware.
    Is there any settings in the System Preferences. What should I do to correct this situation.
    Best,
    Siva
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4600
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3580
    Amperage (mA): 1542
    Voltage (mV): 12220
    Cycle Count: 113

    I'd try a SMC reset - that usually clears battery/power related settings and might do the trick.

  • Laptop shuts down without warning at 30-40% battery (not plugged in)

    Laptop battery discharges from 100% to 40-45% within half an hour and at around 30-40% battery level, it shuts down without any warning.I bought this laltop around 1 year 10 months ago.HP battery check gives this result (status is Calibrate (21) , full charge capacity is 1440mAh,..) Can this be an issue of overheating or the battery.??

    Typically that's a sign that the battery needs replacing. How old is the battery?

  • Imac shuts down without any error message

    imac shuts down without any error message

    Need more details. Which iMac? Which OS? When does it shut down, under what circumstances? What are you doing when it happens? Is it reproducible, i.e. can you make it happen? Does it appear to be getting very hot before it shuts down?
    Open Console in Applications>Utilities and navigate to system.log. Do you see any messages related to shutdown from the time when this has happened? Enter "shutdown" in the filter field, upper right corner.

    Gil,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    "When I charge the ring is always green, never amber."
    This is NOT normal. The power adapter and battery are not "connecting" properly as to why your computer shuts down within minutes of unplugging. It could be the adapter. On occasion (more often with my 15" Ti), I have to wiggle the cord (near the ring) to get the light to change from green to amber.
    Try another power adapter. If you do not have another adapter, borrow one from a friend that does or go the Apple store. Or try another battery to test the adapter. Also, if you have not already done so--try taking the battery out and putting it back in and then plug in the adapter.
    "The battery issue seems to be new..."
    Not really. It is a problem with lithium-ion batteries in general. PC portable users have this issue too. In my experience, these batteries tend to last about two years (dependent upon each users definition of sufficient charge to meet his or her needs). Apple claims 80% of original battery capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles. Some people say the battery life is 500 cycles. You can check the number of battery cycles in System Profiler.
    Hope this helps.

  • My mac pro shut down without any reason!

    I have a Mac Pro 8 core XEON with OSX LION, 22gb Ram, Ati 1gb to conect an Apple Led Cinema 27" anda Apple HD Cinema 23", two hard drives 1tb and 350gb, 2 external hard drives 500 gb, and 1tb.
    Now frequenly my mac shut down without anyreason, sometimes doesnt start up properly and a i have to restart.
    What can i do to solve this problem?
    I have my mac pro and all the other thins conected to an UPS.

    diapoh wrote:
    i think maybe is the operating system! i don´t know! theres not reason for over-heating...
    Mac pro's are "dust magnets" and suck it in all the time it's on.  Open you mac pro (you won't harm it) and drag you finger across some of the bear metal parts.  Can you write "wash me" on it like a dirty car?   Probably can.
    This same dust gets on (an in) everything inside.  All the air intakes and exhausts and components.  The video card has the same problem.   The dust builds up on all these components so they don't dissipate the heat as efficiently and end up running hotter and hotter as more dust builds up.
    This was the reason my first suggestion was blow out the dust (and if there's enough dust do it outside so you don't breath it in yourself).
    As mentioned above you should install a temperature monitoring utility like iStat Pro, iStat Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc.  Then you can monitor many of these temps yourself.

  • Laptop Shuts Down without Warning

    My MacBook Pro randomly shuts down at different percentage of battery life without the usual warning prompt. Why is this? I tried recalibrating the battery. I did so twice and it seemed to be fixed then it happened again. Then when I reboot the sound is all the way down as well as other oddities?

    Typically that's a sign that the battery needs replacing. How old is the battery?

    Thanks in advance !!!!

    Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • A665-s6050 will either go to sleep or shut down without any notice

    I am at a lost and, of course, my warranty expired in July.  Last week my laptop would just literally shut down by itself.  Then when restarting it would just shut down again. The system then starting going straight through to see if it could fix why it didn't complete startup.  After a few tries to start windows normally, I decided to try this option. Could not find anything.  Then it started going straight to this page even if I selected start windows normally.  So, ANYWAY, yesterday I decided to use the Toshiba Recovery Tool and it set everything back just like out of the box. For around 6 hours it was working fine no problems.
    Today, it started again.  It will either shut down completely but if I'm lucky enough to catch it as it is shutting down and I hit the power button it will come back as if it is coming out of 'sleep' mode.
    I've haven't loaded anything except office 2010.  I've changed my power settings to never shut down.  Nothing in Event Log.  Toshiba performance monitor do not indicate that it is overheating.  Whether I am in Battery or power.Same thing.  Just writing this it has gone to sleep twice.  Sometimes it stays on for a while.. Other times..after onlly a few minutes.  After it goes again I'm submitting.
    PLEASE any ideas will help before I take it to the repair center.

    Funny... yesterday my laptop worked fine just on battery power up until i needed to recharge it.  As soon as I plugged in my power adapter it shut down.  I left it shut down to let the battery charge up.  Started thinking that it was my power adapter.  This morning I turned it on just on battery and it turned up got the starting windows screen and then black.  Turned it on again and got to log in.  A few minutes later, black again.  So today I'm, trying the battery.  I took it out and running on straight power.
    All other tests, memory, heat, cpu, and disk drive came out good.  A friend of mine who worked at Toshiba call center said that they have had several issues that are similar that are the result of overheating from the battery pack or the power adapter itself.  Still not convinced but will try anything before taking it in to repair.

  • KT3 2400XP just shuts down without any reason

    I am desperate.
    My system just shuts down as soon as I try to load something in memory.
    It’s a KT7333 ultra 2. The latest bios version an one 512 Mb DDR333.
    First I use memt86 to test the mem. It ran 3 times without any errors. So the
    mem is ok I presume.
    I set the FSB to 133 and the bios reported a 2400 cpu.
    Then I boot a Win98 boot disk en just when the ( dos) startup menu  is
    displayed, the pc shuts down.
    This is not random. It happened as well with other settings. Only the
    default values “last longer” I mean after a while they cause a shutdown as well..
    But when I set the FSB on 133, the pc shuts down.
    I have an arctic cooling Copper Silent cooler. It runs at very low RPM's so
    I get the alarm of "cooler not working". But I continue, like the website
    from arctic-cooling describes. I disable the CPU fan RPM in the bios and
    everything works until the system shut's down. When I look in PC health,
    the temp never goes above 58 °Celsius, so the cooling should be ok.
    After the pc has made a shutdown, I try to restart with the on switch, but
    then there is an error, a signal sounds and when I look at the "D-bracket"
    It indicates an error. The memory detection test, "Testing onboard memory
    size, the D-led will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed
    properly". The led effectively hangs. But when I cut the power on the power
    supply, and then enable it again, press the on switch, the entire system
    boots without a problem. Just until the shutdown.
    Is there another specific memory setting that I can alter?
    When I set the BIOS to "high performance setup" the disk doesn’t even have
    time to read, the system shuts down earlier. This off course also point into
    a failsafe from the cooling.
    Please help.

    Hi,
    It looks to me as your CPU cooler isn't mounted properly....
    Take it off, clean everything, regrease and put it on the right way....

  • Mac pro keeps shutting down without warning

    I have a 15 inch Macpro running Mac OS X Lion, version 10.7.3. It keeps shutting down without any warning. The screen just goes black and I have to press and hold the power button for a while till a hear a sound to turn the system off. This is happening like, more than 5 times a DAY. Please help, any suggestions are welcome.

    Dose this issue happen when the computer is plugged in? or only when it's unplugged from power?
    Have you checked for software updates? if so, have you installed all the updates? (apple menu, software update, install updates, reboot, repeate untill there are no more updates)
    If the issue is happening while power is plugged in, have you tried a SMC Reset and NVRAM Reset?
    Is there any thing externaly connected to the computer besides power? if so, haveyou tried removing those items; to see if the issue only happens while those devices are connected?
    Do you know if yoru MacBook Pro has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT? (apple menu, about this mac)
    Do you have any kind of keyboard cover? if so, have you tried removing the keyboard cover, dose the issue still happen?
    You could also try running an Apple Hardware Test. If it give you any error codes; I would suggest writing down the exact error message it displays.
    Also it might be a good idea to set the graphic card to run on the high end card; and see if the issue still happens. (apple menu, system prefrences, energy saver, At the top there should be a check box along the lines of use best graphic performance at all time, check this box)

  • PowerBook G4 shuts down without warning even when battery is over 60%

    My powerbook has started to shut down without any warning - even if the battery is over 60% charged. The battery is the second (being sent free by apple under the replacement programme). I cannot restart until I have inserted the power cable.
    I have tried to reset the PMU - but, following the instructions from apple support ('after shut down simultaneously press Shift - ctrl - option - power, wait 5 secs then press power button') does not work - PMU does not seem to reset. Apparently, when the PMU has been reset, the time and date change and need reseting - but this does not happen - and mine still shows the current date time after attempting a PMU reset.
    so - still the Powerbook still shuts down working on a nearly full battery. Battery info seems ok.
    I think this is a software problem - any ideas?

    Hi, Pieterrr, and welcome to Apple Discussions. No, my post above is absolutely not an official (or unofficial) statement from Apple. These are user-to-user forums. I'm just another Powerbook user like yourself; I have no connection with Apple. Apple employees very rarely post in these forums, and Apple policies are never announced here.
    What I wrote is a personal view and recommendation based on reading all the posts in the 15" Aluminum Powerbook forums for a while now. I've posted very similar comments many times before, and some (not all) owners of prematurely-old replacement batteries have succeeded in persuading Apple to replace them again after I suggested trying to do so.

  • MacBook shuts down without warning

    My MacBook is a couple years old and the battery might need replacing, but after about an hour of use - many times less than an hour - the computer just shuts downs without any warning at all. Is this a battery problem or a OS problem?

    Thanks Lyssa,
    You've actually suggested solutions on this same problem, but since they did not work, I thought I coming at it from another angle it might help.

  • Qosmio X870 shutting down without reason - low perfs

    Hello everyone,
    I have recently bought a Qosmio X870 116 and I am extremely disappointed. It is supposed to be a gaming computer but I can barely run a single game without the PC crashes. I tried to run recent games such as Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2. During the downloading of the GW2 launcher, the PC crashed after a while, shutting down without any reason.
    I eventually managed to install the game on my laptop anyway but I still encounter some issues since as I play, after not more than two minutes, the game slows down, the frame per second rate drops dramatically to 2 fps and the laptop crashes again.
    I think there is a problem with the graphic card or the fan because eveytime I try to launch a game, the fan starts to run very fast and noisely.
    I thought it also may be a problem with the Nvidia technology because of their Optimus service on their recent graphic cards, therefore I tried to "prioritize" the use of my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M instead of the chipset Intel HD Family 4000 used in the laptop, by right-clicking on the GW2 icon and opening the NVIDIA panel to select the "Nvidia High performances" option.
    Unfortunately, the game still crashes after a few minutes. I obviously updated the drivers for the Nvidia but still, it doesnt work.
    Moreover, the laptop seems pretty slow to me even while browsing on the Internet and the desktop which is rather worrying since the laptot has 12 GB memory.
    Does anyone has an idea what is the reason for such low performances?
    Thanks by advance.

    Try this with your video card and power settings:
    Go to NVIDIA Control Panel (right click on desktop, 8th selection down), select/click
    First tab {Adjust image settings with preview}:
    Select: {Use my preference emphasizing: Performance}
    **select "performance"**
    Hit {Apply}
    Second tab {Manage 3D settings}
    **It gets technical but make sure it is exactly as I say it or it will not work. **
    Go to Subtab 1{Global Settings}:
    {Preferred graphics processor:}
    **SELECT "High-performance NVIDIA processor** *(see Note 1 at end)*
    Settings: *Again,it has to be exact; first phrase in { } is "Features" the first column, second phrase in { } is the "Settings", the second column:
    **Everything is on a drop-down menu if you click on the {Feature} name and mouse over the {Setting} option**
    {Ambient Occlusion} {Performance}
    {Anisotropic filtering} {Off}
    {Antialiasing-FXAA} {On}
    {Antialiasing-Gamma correction} {On}
    {Antialiasing-Mode} {Off}
    *Grayed out* {Antiliasing-Setting} {None}
    *Grayed out* {Antiliasing-Transparency} {Off}
    {CUDA-GPUs} {All}
    {Maximum pre-rendered frames} {4}
    {Multi-dislpay/mixed-GPU acceleration} {Single display performance mode} (see Note 2)
    {Power management mode] [Prefer maximum performance] **a no brainer but its default is not this setting**
    {Texture filtering-Anisotropic sample opt...} {On}
    {Texture filtering-Negative LOD bias} {Allow}
    {Texture filter-Quality} {Quality}
    {Texture filtering-Trilinear optimization} {On}
    {Threaded optimization} {Auto}
    {Triple buffering} {Off}
    {Vertical sync} {Off}
    *Hit "Apply" before moving to the third tab {Set PhysX Configuration}
    Third tab {Set PhysX Configuration}:
    *ONLY SETTING IN TAB*
    Select "GeForce GTX 670M"
    Hit {Apply}
    **NOT "CPU" and, NEVER "Auto-select (recommended)"** (see Note 1, again)
    Go to Power Settings in your Control Panel:
    Choose a Power Plan Option (Search "power" in search bar, choose the "Power plan", second selection under "Power Options" page.
    *GO WITH THE HIGH PERFORMANCE OPTION, VERY CRITICAL!!!!* By default it is on "balance" (I believe)
    Note 1: As far as I can tell the OS (Win8) can't transition like Win7 did between CPU and graphics card. Therefore every time graphics get going hard enough to demand the cards performance, the frames per rate stops or slows.
    Note 2: Select other option if setup is different.
