Larger fonts in Menu bar and title bars?

I recently purchased an Intel Mac Mini for my mother. She does not have the greatest eyesight and I would like to increase the size of the font used in the menu bar, window title bar, etc.. In Windows there is a "large font" theme that does this very nicely.
Is this possible?
The only thing I found that might help is the "Zoom" mode and thats not going to work. She has enough trouble using the mouse as it is and this will only be more difficult...
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can use Universal Access, it's in Control panels
to 'display fonts no smaller than' a specific size,
this is probably what you're looking for
regards,
Peter.
OK, Let us try this again.
If I bring up "System Preferences" and then click on the "Universal Access" doohickey I get a control panel applet that has 4 tabs. The first tab labeled "Seeing" does not contain any option to set a minimum font size. It only contains the "VoiceOver", "Zoom", and "Display" options. None of these options allow me to set the minimum font size. The other tabs in the universal access applet are "Hearing", "Keyboard", "Mouse and Trackball" -- none of these contain anything to do with setting font size.
Perhaps you can provide more detailed instructions to find this mysterious font size setting?
I just searched again in this forum and found this recent discussion which seems to say it is not possible to somehow enable larger fonts in the menu bar and title bar and such. This is ridiculous. Since you can now get LCD displays that have very high pixel density the physical size of these fonts is quite small. Changing the display resolution is not a valid solution since everything gets blurry when you use an LCD at non-native resolution.
Here is URL to recent discussion.

Please tell me that it is possible to increase the size of the font in the menu bar... If I cannot do this I have spent $700 on a computer my mother cannot use.

    If you want to change the size of the font of a TextEdit text document, you do it in the preferences. Alternatively, if you want control over the size of the fonts, make it a Rich Text document, and then you can change the font size. You can either use the Larger or Smaller options, or Show Fonts to choose a size. You can elect to have new documents be Rich Text in the preferences as well.

  • Font in Menu Bar and Drop Down list way too small

    I just tried PSE 10 and was very surprised to see that Adobe did not address the problem with the font size being way too small in the menu bar and drop down list.  I cannot possibly read the font - so the program is basically unusable.  I am using a new 17inch laptop.  Is it possible that after all the complaints Adobe didn't fix this problem in PSE 10?  Are they even working on it?  I love the program but unfortunately I am going to have to switch to something else because there is no way I can read the font and thus cannot use the program at all.  Very, very disappointing.  Hopefully they are working on a fix???

    Photoshop CS5 Essential has preferences that offer users the opportunity to adjust menu bar background color as well as font size.  For example,
    "UI Font Size
    If you find that Photoshop's interface text is a little too small for comfort, you can increase its size by changing the UI Font Size option to either Medium or Large. And no, this option isn't just for old folks with poor eye sight. Working on a very high resolution monitor can make Photoshop's interface text appear very small. Personally, I like to set my font size to Large which I find helps to avoid eye strain. You'll need to close and then re-open Photoshop for the change to take effect:
    Change the font size to increase some of the text in Photoshop's interface.

  • Tiny font on Menu Bar & on window when using Apple Mail on new Macbook Air

    I have a new MacBook Air and all is good - except my Mail window has tiny fonts, including on the tool bar, and the Menu Bar is also has smaller fonts when Mail is active. I have made the actual messages readable but the rest of the screen is almost too small to read.

    I just got my new MacBook Air and I was also really, really disappointed that the menu bar fonts - and all default text sizes in general - are much too small. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the optimal resolution for the monitor is now 1440x900 instead of 1280x800 as it was in the older MacBook Air models. I guess I just have to go to the optician and get myself a pair of glasses...
    But I think this is clearly a design -related problem that Apple should fix asap!

  • Font in menu bar in CS5

    The font is very light on the menu bar in CS5. However Bridge in CS5 is bold and easy to read (as is the menu in PS CS3). How do I adjust the appearance of the menu bar?
    I would also like the gray color on the menu bar and tool bar and in the background of a picture to be lighter.  In Bridge CS5 I can lighten the background to pictures and I would like this in Photoshop CS5.
    Many thanks for help and suggestions.

    Marilynn,
    Hopefully, you will not have to go far down this general list.
    You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Is it possible to increase the size of everything on the display (All fonts, icons, menu bars, etc) at once without changing the screen resolution?

    I have a user with a new 27" Mac who is very.... specific... with how she wants things.  She says she needs the displayed size of everything on her computer increased as everything is too small.  I tried changing the resolution to 1920x1080, which she stated was around the size she wants, but this will not work for her since things aren't crystal clear and she says it hurts her eyes to view it like this.
    I come from a Windows background so I assumed there would be a way to simply increase the display size of everything in one shot.  If not, what hoops will I need to jump through to have this adjusted for every application on the machine?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    OS X doesn't have a UI size increase ability like what you expect on Windows, it's been a long complaint of Mac users for ages, but Apple simply refuses to listen.

  • No menu bar with Aperture 1.56 and Leopard

    Anyone seeing this bug
    Otherwise my Leopard Install went fine

    Well that was a one time only fix, but after mucking around I did find a permanent fix.
    Because the installation adds/duplicates fonts if you eliminate the duplicate fonts the menu bar shows up. I did this. Go to user>library>fonts and move that folders contents to the desktop. I duplicated all the fonts first just to be safe, and put them in a separate folder in my home folder, as well as the original fonts folder. Reboot, and all the menu bars for programs that were missing them now show up. I hope this is a permanent fix. Post back and let me know if it works for you. If it does we may have fixed this problem for other users of "Pro"apps. Mahalo JB

  • Is it possible to increase the size of the menu bar?

    My friend just got a nice new 27" iMac. On such a large display the menu bar disappears into oblivian when you sit far enough back to actually use such a large display. Is it possible to increase the size of the top menu bar? I had a look around at preferences and couldn't find anything.

    In short, no. Just found five or six threads asking this. Here's one.

  • Spry Menu Bar not loading on website

    Hey guys,
    I am currently editing a website so that it has a large horizontal spry menu bar on the homepage and once you go to other pages it has a smaller spry menu bar as a header. To do this I have created to .css files, for the larger one the CSS file is called SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css and the css file of the smaller header is called SpryMenuBar1.css. I have uploaded the Spry Assets folder to my remote server and a test html just to see whether it works. For some reason though it doesn't work? In DW on Live View and Previewing in Chrome and IE work perfectly fine for both the larger and smaller Spry Menu Bar. Bear in mind I work on a local server in DW. The test html is http://www.soccerexperience.com/cover_flow_test.html. On this page I have included the smaller Spry Menu Bar. I haven't actually tested out my homepage yet. Could you please help me shed some light on this problem? I am fairly new to website editing so if your answer could be clear that would be great.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your reply David Powers. I have now uploaded the Js file and all is well! Thanks again

  • Is there a "Large Fonts" feature in OS X? I can't seem to find one.

    Hi all,
    My mother just got an iMac 27". It is running at 2560x1440. However, at this resolution even on the big monitor the menu bars are quite as is the font on the menus. In windows which she used to use and which I use, there's a "Large Fonts" feature which increases the size of the font on menu bars, and the button on the window manager.
    However, I can't seem to find this feature on the mac. I increased the cursor size. I increased the default size of window content in safari etc. And can incr. the size of the dock. But no where can I find a "large font" feature. I can drop the resolution, but this is obviously a bad solution as this just makes everything fuzzy and ugly. Is there any way to preserve resolution and incr. menubar sizes/font sizes? The zoom feature is does not have acceptable behavior to conveniently incr. menu size (most of the time it zooms the menus right out of the frame, and the PIP mode is also poor)
    Any ideas? If there is no OS X built in solution, Is there a 3rd part solution to this?

    Well...it's fuzzy in the way that when you run an LCD on a non-native resolution (e.g. 1600x900 on 2560x1440) the text isn't sharp anymore. It's very notably ugly and pixelated. Windows would simply enlarge the font size but keep the native resolution which made the text nice looking even at higher resolution.
    Hrm. This is very frustrating. Kinda wished I had discovered this before the return period. Seems like OS X has done a very half hearted accessibility. Just decreasing the resolution to increase the size seems kinda lazy. Both Windows, and even many linux window managers have features to adjust this for people with visual impairment without having to sacrifice the resolution. I suppose I could always install Windows on the Mac :-/
    Is there not even a 3rd party solution or 3rd party mac window manager that might do this that anyone is aware of? My search turned up empty...
    Much appreciated.

  • I am using your software: CS^ InDesign Suite on a PC using a Windows 7 operating system.     Due to eyesight issues, I need to have the menu bars of programs in easy-to-read font and picture size.  Specifically, the menu bar

    Hi,
    I am using your software: CS6 InDesign Suiteon a PC using a Windows 7 operating system.
    Due to eyesight issues, I need to have the menu bars of programs in easy-to-read font and picture size.  Specifically, the menu bar across the top (File, Edit, View, etc.), and the menu bar on the left side with the graphic depiction of options.
    In earlier versions of Windows (e.g. XP), whenever I changed the screen resolution on my computer to a lesser resolution in order to show the link icons on my desktop in a larger, more readable size, all the software programs, including yours, appeared on my screen with the menu bars in the larger font size that I needed.
    However, in Windows 7, this is not the case.  Even though I have selected the lowest resolution, making the icons on my desktop extremely large, I cannot read the options across the top menu bar of your program, nor the pull-down menu items that they contain.  I cannot see the graphic depictions of options on the left side of the screen. They are all too small.  How can I make your program increase the size?

    CS6 is not high-DPI compatible/ enabled and that can't be changed. If you cannot6 make it work with your operating system means, then short of joining Creative Cloud and using newer versions there is nothing you can do.
