Late 2010 MBP WIll No Longer Display 1080p for External Monitor

I currently use my 15" 2010 MacBook Pro with an external monitor via an HDMI cable using the Moshi HDMI miniport adapter. Recently when I connect the monitor (I've also tested on a different HDTV and have had the same issue) it recognizes a signal but all it displays is black. Only when I change the signal to 1080i do I get a picture (a poor quality picture). Is there any fix for this? At this point I'm thinking that it's either the adapter or the MBP's hardware that is messed up. I have been using this HDMI adapter without issue since the summer.
Any help would be appreciated.

  • IMovie will no longer display footage for capture

Recently iMovie has stopped working properly. The version number is 5.0.2 (111).
The main problem is that it doesn't display the video. The deck is attached to the mac and is playing but there is no response from iMovie. All I get is a blue screen stating "Camera Playing" but no video or audio.
On top of this the record controls (Play button, Record Button etc) disappear when the mouse hovers over them.
The final symptom is that it takes forever to open an empty document when the program is opened or stops responding altogether.
I've made no alterations to anything that I am aware of. It just worked one day and then not the next.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi Kojima
Not knowing, the common way to get it working is by starting with this.
    - delete iMovie pref file
    - there has to be 10 - 25Gb free space on internal hard disk (less = problems)
    - Run Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - Run Hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - did You install FinalCut recently ?? - this can interfere.
    - Try starting a new account / log into this and see if iMovie works ?
    - GarageBand fix: Close iMovie/open GB/play some notes/close GB and open
    iMovie and re-try.
    To start with.
    Yours Bengt W

My Macbook pro, (late 2010) sometimes will sleep and won't wake up. then the sleep light flashes. What's the problem

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

  • Late 2010 MBP Graphics Related Crashes

I have a late 2010 MBP that is crashing (and has been for some time).  When it first started happening I was on 10.6.8 and it only happened when I was using Google Chrome.  I stopped using Chrome and the crashes stopped.
I have upgraded (finally) to Yosemite and am getting crashes every 10-20 mins.
All the reports name something to do with the Graphics.
Per several suggestions found via google searches, I switched off the automaic graphics switching and the problem only seemed to get worse.  So is my graphics card bad vs the logic board component that does the switching?

As  you have upgraded OS X the system has put more demand on using the discrete GPU which is the cause of the problem.
The problem is likely due to the discrete GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.
I would spend your money on a new model, frankly.

  • Can I extend a MBP 15" to mac display and  another DVI monitor

    Hi,
I have a MBP 15" and I currently use mac display as my external monitor for my MBP via Thunderbolt. Can I also extend it to another monitor with DVI ? Is there any converters that can do that for me.
    Thanks

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010 before ThunderBolt. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

It worked perfect for me. Maybe settings should be different for your laptops. In my case I'm using a MBP 15" with a GeForce 330M.
    The monitor I have is the LG 29EA93 (21:9) @ 2560 x 1080.
Make sure you have exactly same values in Switch Res X. Special attention to "Scan rate".
You can see in the capture below that it's working
and, just in case, here you have the settings that worked for me
It might be also different for each video card...
    Greetings!!

  • When I turned off Find my iPhone, Apple sent me an email saying: I got an email from Apple saying: your Apple ID and password will no longer be required for someone to erase, reactivate, and use your iPhone. I don't understand!

I just turned off Find my iPhone after hearing about the hacking in Australia.  I got an email from Apple saying:  your Apple ID and password will no longer be required for someone to erase, reactivate, and use your iPhone.  Does this mean that anyone can have access to my iPhone?  I still have to put my passcode in.

What that means is the activation lock does not operate if you did what you said you did. Bottom line, turn it back on. That will then require anyone trying to use the device to have yoru Apple ID and password.

  • Time Code displayed on an External Monitor? Is this possible?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but is there a way to view your FC time code on your footage through your external monitor? I selected the show time code overlays from the viewer but it only shows up on the monitor on the computer screen and then goes a way when you play a clip. Is there something I’m missing that will allow me to watch the time code on playback, and on an external monitor? Thanks.

This will allow you to have TC display on one of your computer monitors. You cannot have it display on an external monitor...not on any NLE I know of. Not unless you are outputting to a deck and you have TC on the deck (the SUPER out on the back) routed to the monitor.

  • Can I get mirrored displays on my external monitors?

So I've got a small recording studio and I just got two monitors for free and want to get them working with my Macbook Pro. I know that if I want 3 independent screens, I'll have to get an external box like the Diamond BVU195. So in lieu of doing that, I thought I'd just get a VGA splitter (run into a VGA to mini adaptor into the macbook), so both of the monitors would display the same thing (There's two seats in the studio, that way both people could easily look at the same thing). Is this possible? I've been told it is, but I can't get it to work. When I plug both monitors into the splitter, the left one doesn't flinch, and the right one goes black and gives me an error "Out of range of signal. Cannot display this video mode. Change computer display input to 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz". Neither 1600x1200 nor 60 Hz are valid options for me to change to, and clicking the mirroring option in the display settings only makes the right screen and my macbook screen identical. I'd like the macbook screen independent of the two external screens. Any ideas?

No, no 15" MBP screen is capable of 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200 resolution. To get higher resolution on your external monitor than on your built-in display, put the external monitor into Extended Desktop mode instead of Mirrored mode. Then you can set their resolutions separately and use each at its maximum resolution. To toggle between E.D. and Mirrored, press Command + F1.

  • White screen, but you could get the display via an external monitor.

    Hi,
A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro(A1212) stopped displaying. It only showed a white screen, but you could get the display via an external monitor. A friend looked at it and we discovered a burnt Mosfet (SI3443DV) which was item Q9400 on the motherboard. He went and changed it but it only displayed for less than 5 minutes and it went back to the white screen. would you please advice on what to do since i am not in a financial position to take it for repairs at the apple store?
    Joe

    Forget it.
1: If it was tampered with, then it doesn't qualify for warranty or AppleCare.
2: Repairing it will incur a new expensive logicboard, because that's how they do things. Swap parts out.
3: No money, means no Mac.
Sorry. We don't do hardware repairs here.

  • Is it possible to use the iMac display as en external monitor?

I want to connect my powerbook up to an iMac using the display as an external monitor for the laptop. Is this even possible? Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hello,
I've seen this post at least a hundred times. Has
anyone actually had the gusto to try this idea?
I don't remember where the page was. But, I posted it's link several months ago in the forums during another discussion.
But, the guy who had done it to his iMac G3 had very poorly documented his conversion.
Basically, he took and wired signal to same signal on the monitor, and adapted his power supply and other items to work properly in the modified setup.
So, it is possible. You just need to sit down with the schematics and wire signal to same signal, and make sure you account for all the variables. It may take some resistors, etc. to get the adaptation just right.
I don't have any reason to do it myself, so I'm not going to tinker with it.
If I remembered the link, I'd post it. But, it wouldn't do much good anyway since his HTML formatting was severely messed-up. The end-result was accurate information that was scrambled around on the screen in such a way that you couldn't decipher it anyway. If he had done the HTML work properly, it would be in a formatted table. But, instead the information was scattered all over the screen in an illogical format. So, it wasn't of much real use.

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.

Can Macbook Pro 15" Retina (Early 2013) with Mavericks display HIDPI on external monitor?

you cant return it unless you have had it for 14 days or less, but you can bring it to an Apple store or AASP for warranty service.

  • Apply MacBook display settings to external monitor

Hi. The display on MacBooks and other Macs is beautiful, and I wish I can bring those display and color settings to my external monitor, because no matter how much I calibrate using the one under system preferences or adjust the setting directly on the monitor itself, it does look as nice as it does on my MacBook Air to which the display is connected. I can see all the figues in System Preferences -> Displays -> Color tab -> Open Profile, of both MacBook Air and the external monitor, but is there a way I can manually change those figures of the external monitor so that they are same as those of MacBook Air?
    Thanks.

Yeah, I've changed the Display Profile of my HDTV (connected as a monitor).
If you go into System Preferences > Displays then click Gather Displays and click on the Color Tab for your monitor, deselect "Show profiles for this display only." You should be able to chose the same Display Profile for you monitor as your Mac.

  • SATA II or III on late 2010 MBP - Also SATA III and SSD performance

    Hello:
I would like to confirm that only the new 2011 MBP's have 6gb SATA interfaces. My MBP reports Series 5 and 3gb on both optical and HD bay. I have an SSD in the optical bay and a WD Scorpio Black in the HD slot. Both have a negotiated link speed of 3gb. I put the SSD in the optical bracket and the spinning drive in the real drive slot to take advantages of the physical protection in the HD bay.
If the new MBP's have one SATA III channel, I would assume it's important to put the SSD in that slot.
My SSD has a SATA II (3gb) interface. Some new ones have 6gb. Do SSD drives even approach that throughput or 3gb throughput? Which leads to the question, would a SATA III SSD perform better in a SATA III MBP?
I know the benchmarks may not even be noticeable in real life use for most of us

I have just out a SSD on my 2010 MBP, from all the info i could find both the HDD and optibay in the 2010 late SATA II, this is the reason i  put my SSD in the optibay as the speed would be the same.
I did think about getting a SATA III SSD for the future when i upgrade but at the time they were very expensive and i had read reports about problems connecting to a SATA II.
The new MBP do only have SATA III in the HDD spot so this would be the best place for any SATA III SSD.
Personally on a 2010 MBP im happy, i still get great speeds Vs a HDD but with keeping the HDD in its original spot i get to keep spin down and the motion sensor.
