Late 2013 MBP w/Retina Battery Charging Issue since update to 10.10.2

I don't know if this is due to the update to OS X 10.10.2, or if it's just coincidence, but ever since updating, my battery has had issues charging.
When I plug into an outlet, the indicator in the menubar shows that it's plugged in, light on the power cord doesn't light up (not amber, not green, nothing) and the percentage estimate for power remaining doesn't increase at all, no matter how long I'm plugged in for.
I thought it maybe had to do with more things being plugged into the powerstrip, so I tried plugging into an directly into a wall outlet, but that was no use.
The only way to get the battery to start charging again is to restart AND zap the PRAM; clearly this isn't optimal...
Is any one experiencing this type of issue as well? Any hints or ideas as to how to fix it?
Thank you!

The issue with my late 13" MBP Retina was a hardware issue. No software update can repair a broke antenna, and faulty airport card and logic board.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Issues Since Updating To Yosemite

    Hey everyone,
I have the early 2013 15 Inch Retina MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and ever since I updated to Yosemite I have had many issues which are becoming serious problems.
Problem 1) 9/10 times the laptop will not turn off when shut down is pressed. The Finder disappears, the dock stays put and then does nothing. I have to manually hold the power button to get the laptop to turn off.
Problem 2) Audio issues. I have an external Audio Interface that I use for recording and playback through my studio monitors. Randomly when I'm watching videos the audio of the video will slow down so the audio sounds lowered in pitch while the video stays the same speed. While I'm listening to music through iTunes there have been occasions where the music has actually sped up at least 10x of it's original speed.
Problem 3) Connecting to Apple TV's crashes my computer. At college we have Apple TV's that we can connect Macs and iPads to to showcase work and when I connect my MacBook to it, the Macbook crashes and has to be forced rebooted.
Problem 4) The computer is just generally slower. When browsing files in the finder and using applications such as iMovie the computer is noticeably slower than when before upgraded.
I have tried contacting Apple support but was told that I had to purchase an incident report for £25. After spending £1800 on a Laptop I'm not paying £25 just to talk to someone. Has anyone had these issues? Any fixes?
    Thanks!

Well, if your Contacts have disappeared, then under System Preferences, click on iCloud and make sure you are signed into iCloud. If you are not, sign in. If you are, sign out and then back in to see if that restores your contacts.
I take it you have already restarted your Mac? If not, do that as well.
    Best of luck,
    GB

  • Late 2013 macbook pro retina battery question

I just bought the new macbook pro retina 2013 (first macbook!) I wanted to know what I can do to extend the life of the battery. Right know, I start charging the battery once it gets to about 60%. I keep the charger plugged in when im at home and left the battery discharge at uni. Would doing this having any advatange or disadvantage for the battery?
Also once the battery reaches 100%, would it overcharge if it is kept plugged in? or would it just start to use the power from the adapter instead of the battery
    Anyother tips?
    Thanks

Look at these links.  They will provide you with all the information you need regarding MBP
    batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
csupinski is 100% correct, the OS will not allow the MBP battery to be overcharged.
    Ciao.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina battery problems?

Most of the time my rMBP seems to be running normally and I'm getting all day battery life and CPU temperature is always around 30 degrees C. But recently I noticed that when I'm using it before I go to sleep and I watch a movie on VLC, the CPU temperature goes to around 60 degrees C and the battery or the time predicted drops significantly. I remember Apple saying that I should still be able to get around 9 hours watching movies and I could watch the entire batman trilogy on one charge. Is the problem to do with VLC, that is using a lot of CPU or something else?
Thanks, I appreciate all the help.
    Nate

You're missing my point. I know that watching movies is more intensive than web browsing and maybe the problem is to do with VLC.
When I watch a movie through quick time I still have an estimated 6h26m remaining with 65% battery left. In comparison when I watch a movie on VLC it showed around 3h left with the same amount of battery left.
Also, I'm not sure if this is to do with VLC or if it was a coincidence, but my CPU was at around 30% (system) and the temperature doubled.

  • My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

  • Can I upgrade memory/SSD on late 2013 MBP retina?

I have late 2013 MBP retina, 2.4 ghz, 11,1., basic 4GB and 125GB. I checked with OWC and they yet to have any solutions to upgrade. Am I stuck with this? Wanting to do some video editing and afraid I'll be bogged down.

No. Neither are user-upgradeable in that model. What makes you feel you will be bogged down? If you need more disk space just add an external USB drive. You should have sufficient RAM if you don't try to run far too many applications concurrently for the memory installed.

  • Late 2013 MBP Retina display stains

Late 2013 MBP Retina display stains, getting worse.
I am always very carefully with my mac, still the display always looks smudged. Even when I just close the lid, for transport, I have like the keyboard printed on my display when I open it again. Now I discovered more and more light spots which can't be wiped of at all.
There is obviously a problem with these retina displays.
I am very disappointed I have to say. I'm out of warranty but I can't believe that I pay € 2.600,- and get a display like that!
    Please Apple, do something…

While booting the apple logo is purple and the the grey screen turn yellow for a second.

  • Late 2013 MBP "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model"

Hey yall, some help would be fantastic.
Got my brand new Late 2013 MBP (top end model with the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M) on Thursday and had no problems getting it set up.  Having gotten the OSX side all set up, last night I Bootcamped it. The new Bootcamp Assistant did a great job of loading my Windows 7 ISO onto one Flash drive and Bootcamp Assistant 5.0.5433 on the other Flash drive.
Had no problems during installation but the Bootcamp Support Tools didn't install, so I went to install it (attempted to run the setup file) and received this error:
    Uh oh.
Using the internet (on my iPad) I was able to learn of a workaround to call the installation by negotiating to "Bootcamp\Drivers\Apple\" and executing the Bootcamp.msi as admin.  It appeared to install everything.
However, when I went to change the resolution, I noticed that Windows was using a generic driver and that my max resolution was 1600x1200.
If I could launch a game w/out it immediately crashing, I would have chalked it up to Windows being Windows, but they did and I started digging (assuming that it was an application issue). Tried installing drivers downloaded from Nvidia's website for the 750M but they failed to find applicable hardware.  Now concerned, I validated that I had received the correct version of MBP.
Eventually used a tool from M$'s website to remove the Bootcamp Support Software and then downloaded Bootcamp Support Software version 5.0.5033, where I ran into the exact same issue. Perhaps related, perhaps not, but the wireless on the Windows side takes a long time to connect and appears unreliable/periodically slow.  That suggests that the wireless drivers weren't installed correctly either.
I have no problem reinstalling Windows, but I'm not convinced that its the problem.  The initial error message suggests to me that the Bootcamp Support Software isn't recognizing my MBP.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
it took me finally 4 days to setup Windows 7 via bootcamp. The drivers that are downloaded via bootcamp do not work when installing from a flash drive. Here is what I did to fix the issue with "CD/DVD driver missing...." which would show right after you select the language during installation.
While in OS X, go to the intel website and download the the driver for USB 3.0. Place the file on your windows partition. Boot again, hold the option key and select your flash drive which has the Windows 7 installer on it. Once you get the error message, click browse and locate the driver on your windows partition. Once installed, Windows 7 installs without any problems.

Could anyone help me identify what's the issue causing these Kernel Panics?

    Steps I've done so far:
    Reset NVRAM
    Restarted the computer.
Perform Apple Diagnostic Test, NO ISSUES DETECTED

  • IPAD 3 battery charging issues

iPAD 3 battery charging issues. Read most of the discussions. My question is: If I take my iPAD to Apple Genius bar - what's the test they do to qualify for a replacement (do they place it on a charge and see the charge for Y% for X minutes or do they have other methods)

We're iPad users like you, so don't know.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Best way to set up two thunderbolt displays and thunderbolt ethernet on a Late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports?

I have a late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports. I want to set up two external displays (both have usb ports on the back but not thunderbolt so I can't daisy-chain) but one of my thunderbolt ports is being taken up by the ethernet adapter. Is it possible to convert one of my displays to plug into my open HDMI slot? Or is it better to use the two thunderbolt ports for the two displays and switch the ethernet to the slower usb adapter?

You can use a HDMI to DVI adapter if the display resolution is not greater than 1920 x 1200.
    <http://startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/HDMI/>
or you could use wireless for your network connection.

If you use 5GHz, it should be nearly as fast as Ethernet.

  • Issues since update to yosemite

    Hello everyone,
I've been having all sorts of issues since updating to yosemite which I am struggling to fix on my macbook.
I've had the mac since 2010/11 and the first thing I noticed after updating to Yosemite was the fan constantly running from the moment I boot the machine and that the icons on my desktop were extremely slow to load up as are any files in the documents folder and finder.
Then watching videos on youtube etc were refusing to play fully. I have since updated to the latest flash player but it is still slow.
I ran the activity monitor and a kernel task file is operating at around 120% all the time.
I have read numerous posts on the internet to try to fix and have upgraded to the latest yosemite, reset the printers and many other things.
Now the trackpad is no longer working and not recognised and now the final straw for me is the keyboard refusing to be recognised at startup. I am currently using a wired mouse and bluetooth keyboard to get around these problems and everything is working fine with these but is a real pain.
Has anyone had any similar problems to the above and know how to sort as this is taking up way too much of my time.
    Thanks

What is the exact, complete text of the error message you get?

  • Unreplicable WLAN issues on late 2013 MBP Retina

    Hi all,
I've been having a very strange issue with my MacBook's wifi at home. The issue exists only at home, and only on my machine. All other devices (multiple other iPads, iPhones, windows/mac computers, AppleTV, XBOX) function without any issues on our wifi network, and my machine works fine on any other network. So again, only my laptop, only at home.
Basically my MacBook will drop the connection. It has always been an issue but it seems to be getting worse. After pinging my gateway 100 times i got a 76.8% packet loss rate. It seems to connect briefly occasionally, and sometimes will run for up to 20 minutes before it happens again.
We have replaced our router, as well as our Airport Express unit, bu none of these solutions have helped, reinforcing the probability of it being isolated to my laptop.
An authorised Apple reseller told me it's a known software issue which Apple doesn't have an update for, meaning there's nothing I can do about it since software isn't covered by Apple Care. The Apple Store however is convinced that it's our network.
I have had some of the following suggestions:
    Switch router to Bridge Mode
Try creating a new user profile on the mac
    Try reinstalling OSX
Using static IPs on all devices used at home
Have any of you had the same issue? What are your thoughts on the above solutions? Have any you solved it?

Thanks for your reply. I may not have been clear enough in my post; OWCs SSDs will NOT work in the late 2013 MacBook Pros (they've clarified their website product description to make that abundantly clear); the newest MacBook Pros use PCIe controllers, both for the SSD interface and for the SDXC slot; the 2012 and early 2013 MacBook Pros use SATA; the two are NOT interchangeable, and OWC doesn't make ANY SSD cards that will work in the newest MacBook Pros (yet).
Of course, that's not relevant for the OP, who has a late 2013 MacBook Pro and wants a bigger SSD. My reply to "helpme05" was intended to suggest to him that there may BE such a product from OWC in the future, because iFixIt's teardown of the newest MacBook Pros shows that the SSD still plugs into a (mecahnically and logically different from that on the 2012 and early 2013 machines) motherboard socket.
Your response DID clear up my misunderstanding of why OWC's SSD maxes out at 480 GB; they're using the more conservative estimate of size (base 2 vs base 10), contrasting with Apple's measurement rubric. So, OWC's 480 GB is the same size as OWC's 512 GB unit.
I'm sure you've heard the joke: "There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don't."
    Thanks again,
    Jim Robertson

  • Late 2013 MBP Retina - vertical lines

I have vertical thin colored lines showing on the left side of my display (13.3" MacBook Pro with Retina screen).
Getting progressively worse with additional lines and colors.  Never had this before, mac was sleeping and fully charged, opened the lid and noticed the lines. The lines get worse if I press the screen. Afaik it's not due to any abuse or damage. Screen does not show any physical damage or cracks.
Ran a Diagnostic test but no errors. Also when I take a screenshot of my current screen, the screenshot does NOT show the lines. So must not be the graphics card...? Any ideas..? Will take it in tomorrow to Apple Store, but really bummed about this...

    Hi SanCuracao,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro. Based on your description and the attached pics, it would certainly appear that you have some sort of hardware issue with the display panel on your MacBook Pro. If you haven't already, you would want to make sure you take it in to have it evaluated and serviced. You may find the following page helpful:
